THE JAYHAWKS presented by The Current with special guest Jack Klatt.

The Jayhawks and their rootsy sound were definitely swimming against the tide when they emerged from a crowded Minnesota music scene in 1985. Over the course of almost 4 decades, 11 albums, countless memorable live shows and enough personal drama to fill a couple of Behind the Music episodes, this beloved band soared to heights few ever achieve while winning the hearts and minds of numerous critics, fans and peers in the process. After releasing two Indie albums in the 80s The Jayhawks signed with American Recordings in 1991 and over the next decade released 5 challenging, at times groundbreaking, albums, toured the world to widespread acclaim and even survived the departure of founding member Mark Olson in 1995. After a hiatus in the mid 2000s, the “classic” 1994 lineup reunited for another new studio album in 2011 and 2 years of solid touring, reacquainting audiences old and new with the band's timeless musical vision. 2014 saw a late 90s version of the band led by Gary Louris hitting the road to support the reissues of the 3 Jayhawks albums released from 1997-2003. This lineup released the band's 9th studio album in 2016, recorded  in Portland, OR with producers Peter Buck and Tucker Martine. The band's next studio album, Back Roads And Abandoned Motels, was released in the summer of 2018, featuring Jayhawks versions of songs Gary Louris had previously written with other artists plus 2 new compositions. Recording for a new Jayhawks album was completed in Minnesota in late 2019 and in July 2020 the band released their 11th studio album, XOXO. www.jayhawksofficial.com

    About Jack Klatt:
Musical missionary and tireless troubadour Jack Klatt isn’t one to be easily categorized or relegated to a narrow niche. He comes across as a young man with a wizened and worldly perspective, an artist who possesses a timeless sensibility of both place and purpose. Yet, his artistic integrity extends to more than simply his songs. It embodies both execution and intent. The way he’s mastered his deft finger-picking technique and used that sturdy approach to bring his material an authenticity reminiscent of the most revered musicians and storytellers. A product of the nation’s heartland, Klatt was born and bred in the twin cities. He dropped out of college before spending the next six years pursuing his wanderlust and hitch hiking across the country with nothing but a backpack and a Martin guitar. He eventually made his way overseas, where he slept under the stars and traded songs for spending money, all the while, he made it his mission to proffer the songs of the American masters, in the process, he found himself captivated by the full gamut of archetypal American music, and began to refashion it to suit his own style. www.jackklatt.com

    GRACE POTTER –MOTHER ROAD

Back in summer 2021, acclaimed singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, band leader, and rock and roll performer Grace Potter took off on a solo cross-country road trip that would soon bring a life-saving reconnection with her most unbridled self. The Vermont-born artist spent the coming weeks crashing in roadside motels and taking time each night to transcribe the song ideas she’d dreamed up behind the wheel, often scrawling those notes onto the backs of postcards and motel notepads. After completing two more trips on her own—Potter flew to Nashville for a series of recording sessions that resulted in her most magnificently unfettered collection of songs to date. Equal parts fearlessly raw memoir and carnivalesque fable, Mother Road is a body of work that goes far beyond the typical album experience.

“Mother Road is a reframing of my understanding of my history,” she says. “It’s an important and powerful perspective I’d never had until this record, and the heart of it is my journey to self-reliance and a sense of worthiness.” The follow-up to 2019’s Daylight—a release that earned GRAMMY nominations for Best Rock Album, and Best Rock Performance—Mother Road (released August 18, 2023, via Fantasy Records) fuses elements of soul, blues, country, and timeless rock-and-roll with masterful abandon. Produced by Eric Valentine (Queens of the Stone Age, Slash, and Weezer) and recorded at RCA’s famed Studio A, the LP is an essential insight into the endless nuances of life and love and belonging. And after thousands of miles on the road, countless nights at seedy motels, and a heartrending return home, Potter has made her way to the kind of creative freedom that leaves both artist and audience indelibly altered—a freedom that’s undeniably led to her masterpiece.
