Tashi Dorji (electric guitar) & Tyler Damon (drums/percussion) each reside in separate locales but have come together from a place of mutual admiration. The pair has scarcely spoken of intention regarding their music yet conjure a sound which suggests the familiar and the non-idiomatic at once. Flashes of ecstatic intensity, blurred timbral lines, fractal repetition, noir-ish, cinematic mystery and inclinations toward free play hint that the two are pleased to follow a winding path to destinations yet unknown.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
On the surface, the name of NC band The Collection’s new album, ‘Entropy,’ may seem deceptive. Over the four years since the release of their chamber pop, 25-piece ensemble debut, ‘Ars Moriendi,’ the band shed enough weight to become an efficient touring band, garnered praise from NPR and American Songwriter, toured nationally with bands like The Oh Hellos and Lowland Hum, and performed dynamic sets at CMJ and New Music Seminar as an official “Top 100 Artists On The Verge.”

The trimming-of-the-excess was soon mirrored in vocalist David Wimbish’s spirituality, resulting in the band’s 2017 follow-up, ‘Listen To The River,’ The Collection’s first member-arranged group of songs. Inspired by Herman Hesse’s ‘Siddhartha,’ and the poetry of Rumi, the album took a step off of the fence walked between faith and doubt on Ars Moriendi, landing distinctly on the side of doubt. The constitutive single, Sing Of The Moon, received over 3 million streams between Youtube and Spotify, the release tour brought hundreds of people to venues across the country, and The Collection was featured at Wild Goose Festival, and Switchpoint Conference alongside PRI’s Marco Werman.

Even Entropy’s debut single Beautiful Life, which PopMatters called, “symphonic, poetic wonderment,” seems to be about finding order by watching the natural world. Beneath the surface of all of this, however, is another story.

During the recording of Listen To The River, then-married band-members David and Mira Joy ended their marriage. Though committed to finishing the project peacefully together, the next months were a chaotic chain of events that left them with a totalled car, no house, no work, few friends, and the dwindling commitment of some bandmates.

Starting over alone in a new city, Wimbish began to write for a new solo project, freed from the assumed expectations of fans and band-members. The result was the most focused, honest, and intimate batch of songs the 27 year old songwriter had written, lyrically and musically. As the writing progressed, and the band had to stare it’s impending death in the eyes, a solid and enduring core emerged. Members Hayden Cooke (Bass), Joshua Ling (Harmonium/Guitar/Vocals), and Graham Dickey (Horns/Bells) lent their performances to David Wimbish’s (Vocals/Guitar/Keys/Strings) fleshed out songs, birthing The Collection’s 3rd full-length record from the ashes of the unfinished solo project. With the addition of husband-and-wife Joshua Linhart (Drums) and Sarah McCoy (Keys/Synth/Vocals), the band finally found its firm footing.

And that is where the story of Entropy is revealed: Though meant to document David’s life’s gradual decline into, and subsequent recovery from, disorder, the album became a living testimony to The Collection’s own experience of entropy. Now, with the wisdom of hindsight, the band is back and focused, with a passion for sharing what they’ve learned: that on the other side of disorder lies a new sense of beauty.”

Tatsuya Nakatani is an avant-garde sound artist, composer, and master percussionist originally from Osaka, Japan. Based in the USA since 1994, he lives in Truth or Consequences, NM. Since the late 1990’s, Nakatani has released over 80 recordings in the USA and Europe and has toured extensively; performing solo, in collaboration with other artists, and with his large ensemble project - the Nakatani Gong Orchestra. He presents masterclasses, workshops, and lectures across the USA and around the world.

Nakatani’s approach to music is visceral, non-linear and intuitively primitive, expressing an unusually strong spirit while resisting genre. He creates sound with both traditional and extended percussion techniques. Utilizing his adapted bowed gong, drums, cymbals, singing bowls, metal objects and bells, as well as various sticks, kitchen tools, and his breath he manifests an intense and organic music that represents a very personal sonic world. His approach is steeped in the sensibilities of free improvisation, experimental music, jazz, metal and noise, and yet retains the sense of space and quiet beauty found in traditional Japanese folk music. His percussive instruments can imitate the sound of a trumpet, a stringed instrument, an electronic device…to the extent that it becomes difficult to recognize the source of the sound. He has devoted himself to a musical aesthetic where rhythm gives way to pulse, often in a way that is not always audible or visible, in currents that incorporate silence and texture. Nakatani’s primary music activities include solo percussive performance, his Nakatani Gong Orchestra (NGO), and collaborations with musicians and dancers both in live performance and recordings.

Comprised of an all-star line-up of Asheville North Carolina's most hard working musicians. Dirty Logic started from a conversation after a gig one night, and from there it took on a life of its own. The band works hard to pay respect to Steely Dan by playing the music the way that it should be played, by musicians who can really play their instruments and who love Steely Dan to the core. You can expect to hear some of the more iconic horn/guitar solo's that make these songs what they are, but the band also incorporates live improvisation so that live moments are truly live and each show is unique. With three vocalists, four horns and a full rhythm section, they deliver the experience any true Dan fan craves - THE live Steely Dan concert that you'd expect to see on a big stage...

"The long term vision of the project is to not only play the Steely Dan song book, but also to incorporate some of the material from many of the primary and side projects of the core members. And also the session and touring musicians who shared recordings and stages with the band. The Steely Dan family is truly epic, and this is what we wish to share with the world by paying tribute to these fantastic musicians and song writers.

"Dirty Logic's core band members are also involved in other national and regional projects such as The Travers Brothership, Empire Strikes Brass, Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band, The Business, Ashley Heath and Her Heathens, Grammy Award winner Secret Agent 23 Skidoo, former member of the Jon Stickley Trio, Jesse Barry and the Jam, Chicago Afrobeat, The Billy Sea, Juan Benevides Group, Mucca Pazza, The Digs, James Brown Dance Party, A Family Affair and Fathead.

Aloes: Aloes is the latest solo project engineered by the zealous, yet inscrutable musical mind of Reid Weigner. While Weigner is Atlanta-bred and has recently found his way back to his Georgia roots, he spent the majority of his career-formative years in Asheville, N.C. It was here in 2013 that he earned his B.A. in Music (percussion, composition) from UNC Asheville and where he began playing percussion for effervescent dance-rockers Reptar and instrumental math rockers Hello Hugo. In recent years, he has lent his percussive hand to Asheville acts Axxa/Abraxas, Aunt Sis, Curt Castle, and led his own heavily percussed ensemble Giant Giants (now Organs of Sight) while sharing stages with the likes of Zammuto, Palm, Mothers, Frankie Cosmos, and Joan of Arc. Aloes is now delivering unearthly, cybernetic vibes to us on the synth heavy debut album I (Ingrown Records: March 2019). Tracks like “SciTrek” and “Percentage Points” evoke tantalizing emotions of imminent peril we didn’t know could be so damn fun. Sometimes there’s a fine line between utter bliss and total despair and Aloes is here to make sure those emotions remain blurred in the most enchanting way imaginable.

Midcentury Modular: midcentury modular is John Mitchell based in Raleigh, NC. The project's focus is on using eurorack modular synths and guitar pedals to create peaceful, relaxing and minimal ambient soundscapes. arps is midcentury modular's first physical release, out March 2018. It is an excerpt of a personal journalistic collection of recordings from May 2016 - February 2018 recorded in Raleigh/Durham, NC.

Sunset Palette: Synthesized music made by humans for humans. attempts at trying to stay up all night//always end up falling asleep.

his working trio finds journeyman Chicago saxophonist Dave Rempis alongside two of the brightest talents in a younger generation of improvising musicians. Bassist Brandon Lopez is a musician whose virtuosity knows no bounds, currently one of the most in-demand bassists on the New York jazz and improvised music scene. Percussionist Ryan Packard counters that depth with his own breadth of interests, working in contemporary classical ensembles, indie rock bands, and jazz groups alike around Chicago, not to mention his doubling abilities on electronics. These two together provide a formidable rhythm section that can veer from hard-driving grooves to luscious soundscapes with total ease.

Active since the summer of 2017, the trio made its first studio recording in March of 2018, released in early 2019 on Rempis’ Aerophonic Records imprint. This debut outing is titled The Early Bird Gets, and is perhaps the “jazziest” project any of them are involved with; a result that even the band members found surprising. But after honing their sound through live gigs in 2017 and early 2018, it became apparent that their free-improvised conversation kept returning to a similar destination: a three-way exploration of rhythm and tempo that left them working solidly within the jazz tradition. Not the one fixed into predictable stylistic corners, but the one defined by a spirit of boundless curiosity and exploration. A tradition they stretched back and forth like so much taffy.

The way these three unite into a groove is truly remarkable. Not as something to be closely adhered to, but as something to turn upside down, inside out, and ass backwards, as they expose every last facet of it. At times this means slowing it down, speeding it up, or splitting those two approaches up amongst the band simultaneously. At other times it means jumping to another dimension on the turn of a dime. And while that methodology may feel counterintuitive to the end result, it’s not. This band has a classic approach that has an inherent life and energy to it that dates back to the beginnings of jazz as an art form. It truly swings.
