    2h 1m / PG / Sci-Fi, Adventure

We at Tampa Theatre had been trying to get permission to screen Star Wars (now known as Star Wars: A New Hope) since Grand Admiral Thrawn was still just a twinkle in Timothy Zahn’s typewriter ribbon. For about two decades, our president and CEO has had a business card in his Rolodex with a phone number for Skywalker Ranch. But the rat-king of mergers and acquisitions in the film industry finally paid dividends in 2022, and we lifted our curtain on that famous golden text crawl for the very first time.

Since then, we’ve expanded our own universe to include the rest of the original trilogy of films, and that means an encore of the one that started it all — almost literally.

Construction is complete on the Death Star, a massive space weapon capable of destroying an entire planet. After Princess Leia Organa, a leader in the nascent rebellion opposing the terrifying Galactic Empire, is kidnapped in possession of the Death Star’s plans, she must hide them away in her droid, R2-D2, and hope he and his compatriot C-3PO can find their way to safety. Meanwhile, a young moisture farmer on the isolated desert planet of Tatooine, Luke Skywalker, dreams of growing up and being a starship pilot. He comes to own the droids, but the search conducted by the Empire leads directly to the home of his uncle Owen and aunt Beru. Luke must find the reclusive Obi-Wan Kenobi, entrust his fate to the smuggler Han Solo and his copilot Chewbacca, and learn the ways of the mysterious Force that moves and motivates the entire universe if he is to have any hope of rescuing Leia from the clutches of the dread Darth Vader.

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

    2h 4m / PG / Sci-Fi, Adventure

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back was the second Star Wars movie ever made, which makes it the first Star Wars movie that was made by people who knew what “a Star Wars movie” meant. And it meant everything. Expectations for the sequel were higher than showbiz had ever seen, and production was not un-troubled. Leigh Bracket, George Lucas’s original choice for screenwriter, unfortunately passed away from cancer after submitting a first draft. Lawrence Kasdan, brought on to replace her, had put together a couple well-regarded scripts (The Bodyguard, Raiders of the Lost Ark) but none of them had yet been filmed. Director Irvin Kershner had mainly done quirky independent dramas and TV movies. The production went disastrously over-budget and over-schedule. The first critical reactions were lukewarm and bewildered. And yet? It’s a masterpiece. It’s one of two films with a credible claim to the title of best Star Wars movie. Sometimes lightning strikes twice.

The year is 3 BBY (IYKYK) and the Rebel Alliance is on the run after their victory at Yavin. The Sith Lord Darth Vader, smarting from his defeat at the hands of the Millennium Falcon and a surprising starfighter pilot with a strong Force connection, scours the galaxy for the rebel scum. Luke, Han, Leia and the rest of the crew find themselves under assault on the ice planet of Hoth, and have to split up to escape. Leia and Han, their romantic tension sparking, grab Chewie and C-3PO and head to Cloud City to hide on a colony run by Han’s old “friend” Lando Calrissian. Meanwhile Luke and R2-D2 flee towards the swamp planet of Dagobah to meet Yoda, an ancient Jedi master, after the spirit of Obi-Wan Kenobi gave Luke a strong personal reference. But Vader is as resourceful as he is determined. The bounty hunter Boba Fett, planning to take Han Solo back to Jabba the Hutt and collect his reward, leads Vader to Cloud City while Luke’s connection to the force warns him his friends are in trouble. What secrets will be revealed, and what price will be paid, when the forces of light and dark finally meet face-to-face?

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
    2h 11m / PG / Sci-Fi, Adventure

One year after Han Solo’s capture, C-3PO and R2-D2 are sent to Jabba the Hutt’s palace on Tatooine in a bogus hostage-trade scheme made by Luke Skywalker. The plan is, unfortunately, too complicated for its own good, and while Lando (disguised as a guard) tries to set up the rescue, Leia (disguised as a bounty hunter) is discovered and captured. Luke has to show up in person — clothed in black and wielding a new lightsaber, he helps the whole crew to get out by the skins of their collective teeth. Elsewhere, the Galactic Empire is constructing a second, even more powerful Death Star to exterminate the Rebel Alliance. The rebels regroup on the forest moon of Endor in an effort to open a hole for their starship fleet to attack, but Luke, convinced he must change the heart of Darth Vader, allows himself to be captured and taken before the Emperor. Will good triumph? Can Vader be redeemed?

A New Hope changed everything, and The Empire Strikes Back surprised everyone. But by 1983, audiences thought they knew what to expect from a Star Wars movie. Critics loved it (four stars from both Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel!) and audiences made it the highest-grossing film of the year. And yet nobody — not even George, despite what he may tell you — fully understood what was coming. The original Star Wars trilogy changed the film business, revolutionized special effects, basically invented merchandizing, originated the contemporary attitudes of fandom and pointed out the new path of popular culture for decades to come. By 1997, the trilogy was released to home media in special editions and set things up for the prequel trilogy to kick off in 1999. The world belonged to Star Wars. And with all its ups and downs, the highs and lows, the endless expansion and the bombardment of branding, it still does. The stories of the Skywalker line in this galaxy far, far away still move and thrill audiences of all ages. Whether you’re seeing Return of the Jedi for the first time or the five hundredth, we at Tampa Theatre celebrate Star Wars in all its messy, manic, fascinating glory right alongside you.

    2h 46m / PG-13 / Sci-Fi, Adventure

The epic saga that began with Frank Herbert's seminal science fiction masterpiece continues in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two. Set in a distant future where noble houses vie for control of the desert planet Arrakis and its valuable spice, the story follows the journey of Paul Atreides (Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet) as he embraces his destiny as the messianic figure known as Muad'Dib.

In this installment – which picks up immediately after the 2021 film – Paul's power grows as he consolidates his rule over Arrakis and navigates the intricate political landscape of the Imperium. As tensions escalate between the Atreides dynasty and their enemies, Paul faces challenges from from all sides, including betrayal, rebellion, and the machinations of the enigmatic Bene Gesserit sisterhood.

With an all-star, international ensemble cast featuring Zendaya, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Dave Bautista, Christopher Walken, Javier Bardem, and more, Dune: Part Two delves deeper into the themes of power, religion, and ecology, balancing epic scope with intimate human drama. Or, as the AV Club review put it: “As blockbuster movies go, Dune: Part Two is a thrilling ride that totally earns its two-and-a-half-hour running time.”

With forty years of making music as the iconic folk-rock band Indigo Girls, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers have made their mark as musicians, songwriters, and dedicated activists. They have represented radical self-acceptance to many – leading multiple generations of fans to say, “the Indigo Girls saved my life.” Still, Amy and Emily battled misogyny, homophobia, and a harsh cultural climate that chastised them for not fitting into a female pop star mold.

With joy, humor, and heart-warming moments, Sundance award-winning director Alexandria Bombach brings us into a contemporary conversation with Amy and Emily, alongside decades of the band's home movies and intimate present-day verité.

    1h 40m / R / Comedy

A 1920s English seaside town bears witness to a farcical and occasionally sinister scandal in this riotous new mystery comedy based on a stranger-than-fiction true story.
When deeply conservative local Edith Swan (The Crown’s Olivia Colman) and her fellow residents begin to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, the rowdy, foul-mouthed Irish migrant Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley) is charged with the crime. The anonymous letters prompt a national uproar, and a trial ensues.

However, as the town’s women - led by Police Officer Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan) - begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect that something is amiss, and Rose may not be the culprit after all.

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
    1h 34m / PG / Animation

After three death-defying adventures defeating world-class villains with his unmatched courage and mad martial arts skills, Po, the Dragon Warrior (voiced by Golden Globe nominee Jack Black), is called upon by destiny to … give it a rest already. More specifically, he’s tapped to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace.

That poses a couple of obvious problems. First, Po knows as much about spiritual leadership as he does about the paleo diet, and second, he needs to quickly find and train a new Dragon Warrior before he can assume his lofty new position.

Even worse, there’s been a recent sighting of a wicked, powerful sorceress, Chameleon (Oscar® winner Viola Davis), a tiny lizard who can shapeshift into any creature, large or small. And Chameleon has her greedy, beady little eyes on Po’s Staff of Wisdom, which would give her the power to re-summon all the master villains whom Po has vanquished to the spirit realm.

So, Po’s going to need some help. He finds it (kinda?) in the form of crafty, quick-witted thief Zhen (Golden Globe winner Awkwafina), a corsac fox who really gets under Po’s fur, but whose skills will prove invaluable. In their quest to protect the Valley of Peace from Chameleon’s reptilian claws, this comedic odd-couple duo will have to work together. In the process, Po will discover that heroes can be found in the most unexpected places.

    59m / Not Rated / Documentary

In the new documentary Food Roots, Emmy award-winning Chicago restaurateur Billy Dec adventures through his mother’s native 7641 Islands of the Philippines to learn recipes from his last living elders, confronting culinary and cultural treasures and family secrets.

Food Roots gives viewers the opportunity to accompany Dec by plane, boat, motorcycle, jeepney and foot as he searches through bustling metropolitan cities, tiny remote islands, and hidden cloud-scraping mountain villages to find his family members. He climbs a mountain to meet with a 103 year-old tribal tattoo master, where she blesses him with a tattoo related to his ancestral connection. Through the ups and downs of the trip, Dec gains a deeper understanding of his family history, along with an elevated appreciation for how food has shaped their view of the world.

Guests are invited to stay after the screening for a filmmaker Q&A with Billy Dec, whose ties to Tampa include the Sunda New Asian restaurant in Midtown.

    2h 10m / R / Adventure, Crime

Set against a gritty backdrop of the American Southwest, Thelma and Louise starts as a girls-weekend road trip between two best friends, but soon takes a dark turn.

Timid housewife Thelma (Geena Davis) and footloose Louise’s (Susan Sarandon) first stop is a few beers at a run-down roadhouse. Filled with liquid courage and flexing her brief freedom, Thelma flirts with a local barfly, only to find out he won’t take “no” for an answer. Thank goodness Louise is there to do what any best friend would do, given both the opportunity and the ammunition. Now the ladies are on the lam, making a series of questionable decisions (one of which involves a young, shirtless Brad Pitt) as they contemplate their next move, but also strengthening their bond of friendship and solidarity.

Starring two women known for their advocacy (both of whom were nominated for Best Actress Oscars that year), it’s no surprise that the film resonated deeply with audiences upon its release, sparking discussions about feminism, female empowerment, and the limitations imposed by gender roles. The portrayal of two strong-willed women breaking free from oppression struck a chord in the early 1990s, a time marked by increasing awareness of gender discrimination and calls for women's rights. It won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay is still celebrated for its powerful performances, thought-provoking narrative, and enduring cultural impact.

Guests are invited to stick around after the screening for a post-show Film Talk and audience Q&A with Hector Sotomayor, professor of Film, Art, & Media at the Ringling College of Art & Design.
