Morgan Wade & The Stepbrothers (Website)

Back in 2013 Morgan Wade was a freshman in college, her skin was not tattooed, and she did not have a love for alcohol. Her mind was set on pursuing a career in the medical field, and living the ideal working life. It was not until 5 months into her college career, everything changed. Wade had been in a relationship that abruptly ended, to which she still takes the blame, claiming “ I am not an easy person to deal with, and I was even worse back then, since I was on a path I did not really enjoy.” Wade claims her love was the only one that ever really saw her singing and songwriting abilities as something more than a hobby she had behind closed doors. That is why it became all too clear to her that in order to get him back, or in Wades own words, “piss him off” she had to write a song about it. That is exactly what she did, in the home where she grew up, on her bedroom floor, with a bottle of Jack Daniels and a guitar. If only Wade had known how pivotal that moment was, and where it would lead.

The band has changed members since the earlier days of 2013 leading to the formation of The Stepbrothers in 2017 with Bengy Wagner on drums, Drew Sprinkle on guitar, Ed McGee on bass, and Joe Link on piano. The band just released their debut album Puppets With My Heart back in January, packing out to record release shows, one in Floyd and one in Roanoke. The record contains 11 tracks all written by Wade, some softer, but all edgy with that powerhouse raspy- twang, that has gained her recognition.

Biggins (Website)

Biggins is a raw, gritty, honest country rock group from the mountains of North Carolina. Comprised of cousins Daniel and Nolan. Biggins, started in the wake of two songwriters finishing their solo albums and the realization that they would have to play the material live. Both of them not wanting to go it alone they joined forces and began taking a different look at the recording approach to the songs. A whole winter of recording later they have finished their album.

Recorded with Brandon Hamby at Dead Peasant Studios in Elkin, NC. Featuring the brilliant pedal steel work of Wes Hamilton and fiddle work of Ian Pasquini respectively both bringing a different flame to the fire creating a dark country rock atmosphere over top of the songs Nolan and Daniel had already recorded.

Whiskey Foxtrot (Website)

Whiskey Foxtrot is an Americana band from Winston-Salem, NC founded by Seth Williams and Sam Foster in 2017. Both Seth and Sam had been performing as solo artists for several years around North Carolina, and on various occasions would perform shows together.

After they decided to team up together to form Whiskey Foxtrot in 2017, they quickly became a regional favorite. They play hundreds of shows per year across North Carolina and Virginia while continuing to grow a following in the Southeastern US, including Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina.

Whiskey Foxtrot is comprised of Seth Williams (Vocals/Guitar,) Sam Foster (Vocals/Guitar,) Brad Cardille (Bass/Vocals,) Terry VunCannon (Lap Steel,) and Steven Worley (Drums.) The group can perform as an acoustic duo, trio, or with the full five piece band.

Who's Bad: The Ultimate Michael Jackson Experience (Website)

Founded in 2003, Who’s Bad’s live performance is an unrivaled celebration of pop music’s one true King. Their power-packed performance of Michael Jackson’s expansive catalog has ignited crowds on every continent and can only be described as a jaw-dropping, musical must-see. As the longest-running Michael Jackson tribute band, and the only one to predate his untimely passing, Who’s Bad has awed even the skeptics, selling out nearly 50 venues in the United Kingdom including London’s O2 in December of 2010, the venue where the King of Pop was slated to end his career with a 50-show “This Is It” concert series.

Beyond this unparalleled achievement, Who’s Bad has checked some of the world’s most famous pavilions off their ‘to-do’ list, selling out their first tour of China with stops at Ningbo’s Grand Theatre and Hunan Grand Theatre in Chengsha. Never neglecting Michael’s U.S. fans, Who’s Bad has packed The House of Blues franchise all across the United States; rocked DC’s 930 Club and returned to their native Chapel Hill, NC boasting larger, more eagerly-awaited performances with every romp around the globe. Sold-out shows from Colorado’s Bluebird Theatre and LA’s Gibson Amphitheatre and Romania’s Sala Palatalui to Teatro do Bourbon Country (Porto Alegre, Brazil) tell the story: no corner of the earth is safe from this infectious party production.

Drivin' 'N Cryin' (Website)

Celebrating their 33rd Anniversary together, Atlanta-based folk rock act, Drivin N Cryin, have spent most of 2018 on tour.

In October 1985 Drivin N Cryin played their first show at Atlanta’s famed 688 Club. The band quickly gained attention for their blistering live shows, and amassed a rabid fanbase in the fertile soil of the late-1980s Southeast music scene. Now, 33 years later and after releasing four full length albums on Island Records and one on Geffen Records, founding members Kevn Kinney and Tim Nielsen find themselves enjoying a milestone anniversary for the band, having survived the pressures of fame, a shifting musical landscape, multiple lineup changes, and miles of backroads and highways to arrive here.

With a gold record, 10 full-length albums, and a handful of EPs to their credit, the band still refuses to rest.

In 2012, a documentary about the band entitled Scarred but Smarter: Life n Times of Drivin’ N’ Cryin’ was produced. In 2015, a collection of 10 choice cuts from the band’s 4-EP “Songs” series, entitled Best of Songs, was released on Nashville’s Plowboy Records. Additionally, the band was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame the same year. The following year, Drivin N Cryin released a vinyl-only album, entitled Archives Vol One, with a collection of basement recordings from the years 1988 to 1990.

With Dave V. Johnson as their drummer, and the band’s newest member Laur Joamets (originally Sturgill Simpson) now being added to the lineup, Drivin N Cryin is continuing to tour the U.S. to great acclaim.

Possum Jenkins (Website)

Since coming together during their final year at Boone, North Carolina's Appalachian State University in 2004, Possum Jenkins has toiled and triumphed in bars, clubs and festivals across the Carolinas and into Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia.

A sonic marriage of arresting melodies married to off-the-rails energy find the veteran group zeroing in on a sound that variously features elements of Appalachian string music, Raleigh-bred alt. country, a deep love of blues and soul and, at times, more than a little Southern rock.

The band has been fortunate to share the stage with a number of fine musicians, including Jason Isbell, Billy Joe Shaver, Tift Merritt, Southern Culture On The Skids, Greg Humphries, The North Mississippi Allstars, Yarn, Andy Friedman & The Other Failures, Naked Gods and Shooter Jennings.

Lauren Morrow (The Whiskey Gentry) (Website)

With a high-octave range and a Georgia drawl, Lauren Morrow isn’t here to sing a love song — she’s here to tell a story. And though she might be new to Nashville, she’s already paved her way as one of the city’s most promising artists. You might know her as the crown jewel of The Whiskey Gentry, who have toured with Three Dog Night, Cracker, and Butch Walker, appearing on festival bills like Shaky Knees, MerleFest, and Bristol Rhythm & Roots (to name a few).

In late July 2017, Morrow and her husband Jason travelled to Nashville to play Oh Boy Records’ John Prine Tribute night, a intimate gathering where musicians like Jason Isbell, Kelsey Waldon, and the Brothers Osborne joined together to benefit legendary artist Jessi Zazu. After witnessing the supportive music community that Nashville had to offer, Lauren and Jason, also a member of The Whiskey Gentry, decided it was time for a change.

Blue Dogs (Website)

On Friday, December 29, 2017, the Blue Dogs once again took over The Charleston Music Hall in their hometown to celebrate 29 years of making music. This show marked the Americana band’s fifth "homecoming" since their 25th Anniversary show in 2013, and to solidify it as annual affair, in 2014 the band brought in the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Children's Hospital as a charity partner. By evening’s end of the 2017 show--thanks to support from a variety of local sponsors, donations of ticket holders, as well as a generous gift by an anonymous donor and the overall match by The Press On Fund (for pediatric cancer research)--the Dogs fetched over $180,000.00, all of which benefited the capital campaign for the new MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital by funding the pediatric cancer research of MUSC Hematologist-Oncologist Dr. Jacqueline Kraveka. Their four-year total is close to a half a million dollars raised.

The show was again a sellout, and as in years past, the show included special guest appearances--this year featuring two legendary bands from the Carolinas: The Connells from Raleigh NC and The Killer Whales from Charleston SC.

Guests at past shows have included Darius Rucker, Hootie and the Blowfish, Edwin McCain, Radney Foster, Grammy-award-winning songwriter and producer Shawn Camp, 2015 Georgia Music Hall of Fame inductees Drivin’ N Cryin’, SC native Sadler Vaden (former Blue Dogs sideman who is now guitarist for Grammy-nominated Americana artist Jason Isbell), Cary Hudson (formerly of Blue Mountain), Pat McGee, Doug Jones of Greenville SC’s Cravin’ Melon, acclaimed South Carolina singer-songwriter Danielle Howle, Matthew Mayes & John Felty of Brevard, NC's Jupiter Coyote, and most of the former and current members of the Blue Dogs. Unannounced guests are expected each year.

The band continues to perform in 2018 on a regular basis at venues mostly on the East Coast, including clubs, festivals, and colleges as well as for a variety of events. They continue to maintain an international fan-base, with all 9 of their recordings available through iTunes and other digital portals via their distributor, Redeye, and their CD's, DVD's and other merchandise offered exclusively at their website, www.bluedogs.com.

2018 marks 30 years since standup bassist Hank Futch joined forces with longtime friend, fellow Cub Scout, and acoustic guitarist/vocalist Bobby Houck under the band name “Blue Dogs,” and so they will celebrate their 30th Anniversary on Saturday, December 29, 2018, once again at The Charleston Music Hall, and with special guests to be announced later in the year.

The Funky Knuckles (Website)

The Funky Knuckles is a world class jazz orchestra made up of genetically enhanced cybernetic super men. They have played at the finest venues around the world delivering mind blowing rhythms and harmonic complexity that will shatter your fragile psyche and leave you drowning in a pool of fresh llama milk. The band members are as brilliant as they are handsome and they have performed with people such as the legendary Phill Aelony. This unstoppable crime fighting squadron will make you dance like a kraken on meth before you burst into tears of joy which can be combined with powder from a ground up cobra skull to synthesize the elixir you need to pass through solid objects.

Jonathan Scales Fourchestra (Website)

Jonathan Scales is one of the most innovative steel pannists on the planet, and is redefining and challenging traditional expectations of his signature instrument. In his hands, the sonic palette of an instrument often associated with cruise ships and tropical resorts is radically expanded to mimic the role of horns, piano, vibraphone or marimba due to his stunning, virtuosic technique. Scales’ mesmerizing compositions have captivated listeners and elevated him to the status of a true composer, forging new territory in the medium of instrumental music.

Although Scales’ writing produces songs that are ultimately accessible and danceable, the compositions can be remarkably complex and difficult to perform. As a result, the power trio whimsically named Jonathan Scales Fourchestra has always had a fluid lineup top-notch musicians, and even included an “all-star” version with bassist MonoNeon (Prince, Ghost Note), drummer Robert “Sput” Searight (Snarky Puppy, Snoop Dogg) and percussionist Weedie Braimah (Trombone Shorty, Nth Power), as well as a number of other talented marquee value players. Throughout these changes, Scales has demonstrated remarkable perseverance and persistence, a topic that he presented in a TED Talk, while continuing to write and develop his craft and touring the North American and European club and festival circuit—as well as dates in Japan, Central America and The Caribbean. Scales also represented the United States through the Department of State as a musical ambassador in a four week concert tour of China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Indonesia in early 2017, an honor for which he was chosen from among three hundred finalists.

John Ray Trio (Website)

John Ray is a bass player from Winston-Salem, NC who has performed and recorded with many bands around the country, in musical genres ranging from hip-hop to jazz to classical, for the last 17 years. He was trained in classical guitar from the age of 8, and went on to major in classical bass performance at UNC School of the Arts. Since graduating in 2000, John has played with literally hundreds of acts, and has found his niche in the bass world as an electric/upright doubler with a very unique, pocket oriented groove. He has performed with notable acts such as the Allman Brothers, The Embers, and George Clinton, and shared the stage with bands such as the Roots, Gap Band, Wu Tang Clan, and more. He is passionate about improvised music, and enjoys playing with anyone who loves music, energy, and life as much as he does.

Mipso (Website)

Chapel Hill’s indie Americana quartet Mipso – Jacob Sharp (mandolin, vocals), Wood Robinson (bass, vocals), Joseph Terrell (guitar, vocals), and Libby Rodenbough (fiddle, vocals) – release their fifth album, Edges Run, on April 6th, 2018 via a newly inked record deal with AntiFragile Music. Influenced by the contradiction of its progressive home and the surrounding rural southern landscapes, Mipso has been hailed as “hewing surprisingly close to gospel and folk while still sounding modern and secular” (Acoustic Guitar) and was recently recognized by Rolling Stone as an “ Artist You Need to Know.” The band brings a distinctly unique sound – full of wistful beauty, hopeful undercurrents, and panoramic soundscapes. Venturing ever-further from its string-band pedigree to discover a broader Americana where classic folk-rock and modern alt-country sounds mingle easily with Appalachian tradition, Mipso’s music is lush and forward moving, with lyrics that sear and salve in turn. Look for Mipso on tour this spring in support of their new release, Edges Run.

Martha Bassett (Website)

Martha Bassett was raised on the bluegrass and gospel of her native West Virginia farmland. Classically trained, Martha is blessed with a crystalline tone, a remarkable range, and sultry delivery. Her performances are known for their emotional honesty and visceral impact, making everyone in the room feel she’s singing directly to them. Her musical inspiration moves effortlessly through swing, jazz, folk, country, and rock guaranteeing playful variety at her live shows. Mixing originals with choice covers, she navigates sexy torch songs, rip-your-heart-out ballads, and slinky groove tunes with ease supported by a band equally comfortable in acoustic and electric settings. With her fourth disc, The Goodbye Party, Martha explores longing, anger, loss and love. The songs are heartbroken and wistfully triumphant. No Depression describes Martha’s music as “intricate and resoundingly captivating, each song takes me further into a scene.”

Regularly seen on stages at Merlefest, the Eastern Music Festival, Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival and concert venues throughout North Carolina and Virginia, she’s opened for Lyle Lovett, Tony Bennett, the Avett Brothers, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Jim Lauderdale, and Chuck Prophet. Martha contributed music to the Sony Classics film, “Junebug,” as well. Her tours have taken her up and down the east coast and into the Midwest. Cashavelly Morrison (Website)

Cashavelly Morrison is an Americana-Alt Country singer and songwriter. Her debut album, The Kingdom Belongs to a Child, was released in October of 2015 to rave reviews and received an Independent Music Award for Best Alt Country Album. No Depression called it "a remarkable pearl" being one of the most "thoughtful, delicate, and elegant albums" they've heard. Famous Last Words named it one of the best albums of 2015, and Huffington Post called it "honest, evocative, and intoxicating." Her songs blend together the traditions of American roots, the ballads of Appalachia, and represent a confessional gateway into her deeply held values.

Morrison has experienced a lot since the release of her highly-acclaimed first album. On a personal note, she gave birth to her daughter. On a more global scale, she watched the 2016 election of Donald Trump play out amidst the protests of the #MeToo, Black Lives Matter, and March for Our Lives movements. As working musicians and the parents of two young children, all of these events weighed heavily on the minds of Morrison and her husband, guitarist/banjo player Ryan MacLeod, as they crafted the music and message of Hunger, her newest album, set for release on November 3rd, 2018.

The crux of the album is laid bare in the title track, with its Wild West slide guitar accenting a violent vision of the vulnerable being hunted by those in power. “This song’s meaning is representative of the meaning of the entire album,” Morrison says, “that those in power who use the disadvantaged for their own personal gain are making a toxic, malignant bargain—a bargain that hurts them as much as it hurts others.”

Lucinda Williams (Website)

Three-time Grammy Award winner, Lucinda Williams has been carving her own path for more than three decades now. Born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Williams had been imbued with a “culturally rich, economically poor” worldview. Several years of playing the hardscrabble clubs gave her a solid enough footing to record a self-titled album that would become a touchstone for the embryonic Americana movement – helping launch a thousand musical ships along the way.

While not a huge commercial success at the time Lucinda Williams (aka, the Rough Trade album) retained a cult reputation, and finally got the reception it deserved upon its reissue in 2014. Jim Farber of New York’s Daily News hailed the reissue by saying “Listening again proves it to be that rarest of beasts: a perfect work. There’s not a chord, lyric, beat or inflection that doesn’t pull at the heart or make it soar.”

For much of the next decade, Williams moved around the country, stopping in Austin, Los Angeles, Nashville, and turning out work that won immense respect within the industry (winning a Grammy for Mary Chapin Carpenter’s version of “Passionate Kisses”) and a gradually growing cult audience. While her recorded output was sparse for a time, the work that emerged was invariably hailed for its indelible impressionism — like 1998’s Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, which notched her first Grammy as a performer.

The past decade brought further development, both musically and personally, evidenced on albums like West (2007), which All Music Guidecalled “flawless…destined to become a classic” and Blessed (2011), which the Los Angeles Times dubbed “a dynamic, human, album, one that’s easy to fall in love with.” Those albums retained much of Williams’ trademark melancholy and southern Gothic starkness, but also exuded more rays of light and hope. This all lead to the 2014 release of Williams’ first double studio album Down Where The Spirit Meets The Bone. The album received overwhelming praise from the media and fans, thus proving that Williams’ songwriting is as strong and important as it has ever been.

The Dead Tongues (Website)

Ryan Gustafson remembers very little about the origins of the ten songs on Unsung Passage, his profound new reflection on the emotional architecture of love, loneliness, and life at large.

He mostly knows that the songs were written during quick spans scattered between various tours of the last two years—as a supporting guitarist for his kindred North Carolina spirits Hiss Golden Messenger and Phil Cook’s Guitarheels and as the leader of his own long-evolving vehicle for a beautifully fractured vision of folk, country, blues, and cosmic American rock, The Dead Tongues. Gustafson’s third and best album under that name, Unsung Passage depends more on the songs themselves than the sounds around them. It is a first-person reckoning with the things Gustafson, a chronically peripatetic adventurer, has seen enough to sing about. “Every turn, every changing that occurs,” Gustafson offers during “The Broken Side of People Everywhere,” his voice sweetly yearning for whatever it is that might come next. “There’s a string attached, with a promise at the end.”

Scott Biram (Website)

With the heart of a genuine Texas bluesman, the head (banging) of a Zappa and Lemmy disciple, and boots resting in the dust outside of town at sunrise, Scott H. Biram journeys through the harrowing human condition like no one else. A walk on the Biram side straddles the chasm between sin and redemption and The Bad Testament lands somewhere west of the Old Testament and south of an AA handbook. It’s a record of hard-grinding lost love, blues and deep, dark Americana.

Scott H. Biram conjured the words and music for The Bad Testament during mad alchemical sessions at his homemade studio in Austin, TX. Through stacks of amps, spools of cable, and a prodigious collection of microphones, he spread his technical wings wide, while never losing the immediacy honed from a life on the road. He added a drum kit and rustic vocal duet to his skill set (which already includes all guitars, bass, keyboards, vocals, and percussion on the album). And strip away the one-man band eccentricity, SHB is out-writing any meeting taker on Music Row. The man writes on a razor’s edge of aggression and deftness, thoroughly contemporary but steeped in the backwaters, back porches and back alleys of our collective musical heritage.

The Goddamn Gallows (Website)

Spit from the heart of America's Rust Belt, arising from a night of flophouse violence. Drifting across the states, they cemented their sound in Portland, OR and later in Los Angeles, CA, where they lived in abandoned buildings, squatter camps, storage units and shoebox apartments.

In 2007, they left everything behind and spent the next 4 years living out of whatever vehicle would get them to the next town. Building upon their original sound of twanged-out, punk rock gutterbilly (Life of Sin 2004 and Gutterbillyblues 2007), they began picking up stray musicians along the way and adding to their sound; washboard, accordion, mandolin and banjo (Ghost of the Rails 2009 and 7 Devils 2011) creating a sound referred to as "hobocore", "gypsy-punk" or "americana-punk", while never being stuck in any one sound.

Enter 2018 and The Goddamn Gallows have reinvented themselves once again with The Trial. From rockabilly, psychobilly and punk rock, to bluegrass and metal, The Trial infuses disparate sounds into a new strange recipe of seamless genre bending profundities.

Urban Pioneers (Website)

Mix one part Texas fiddle and one part Tennessee banjo, add doghouse bass and a splash of guitar and you have a delicious cocktail for your ears known as the Urban Pioneers. This string band hammers out a variety of original songs that encompass old time hillbilly music, western swing, rockabilly, and even a few gypsy type songs for good measure. The band stays on the road constantly all over the world playing anywhere from large festivals to backyard parties, from quaint listening rooms to goat farms, and from divey punk bars to corn roasts.

Liz and Jared met in 2011 as backing members for a handful of prominent underground roots artists. When the timing was right they decided to form their own band and do things their way. Since 2014 the Urban Pioneers have released five full length recordings and have criss crossed the globe countless times. From the spring through the fall the trio spends a large majority of their time on the road. When the weather turns cold they spend their winters on their Texas ranch trapping feral hogs and writing new material.

Todd Snider (Website)

i started making up songs in 1986.
i made an album in 1994.
i also started a tour in 1994
and that tour is, in a way, still going.

i never made a record so good
that i could just sit home
or did a show so bad
that i had to.
and man, i’ve done some shit shows,
shit albums too.
some of them are pretty good though,
but you know,
it’s been a while.
i really need to put out a good album soon
or i'm finished.

sometimes these days i sing with a band.
i think we made a good album.
david schools of widespread panic is our leader.
i make up our lyrics....we’re a jam band.
our songs only go on about an hour or so but they’re still pretty long.

cool people jam with us all the time and we have like a million shirts and shit.
i personally think we’re the seventh best band in the whole jam thing.

on this tour i am coming to town with nothing but my
guitar and stories
like the old days.
you know...
pick a little
talk a little
pick a little
talk a little
cheap cheap cheap
talk a lot
pick a little more.

and not to brag,
but i also wrote a book that everybody loves
so i am an author now.
plus i play everywhere,
pretty much all the time
everybody shows up
and they pretty much always love it.

Darrell Scott (Website)

Whether its’ rock, folk, country or blues, Darrell Scott, the four-time Grammy nominated Nashville songwriter, has written hits all the way from Brad Paisley and the Dixie Chicks to Del McCoury, Sam Bush and Keb Mo; contributing songs to three of 2016’s best albums alone. ‘It’s not surprising that Scott wrote nine of the 14 songs on his own new album, “Couchville Sessions,” and less surprising that he wrote three songs with the like-minded Americana artist Hayes Carll on Carll’s magnificent new disc, “Lovers and Leavers,”’ in addition to “1000 Things” from Sarah Jarosz’s award winning “Build Me Up From Bones” album.

What’s more surprising is that Scott came off of a year and a half of touring in Robert Plant’s Band of Joy with a co-write on R&B star Anthony Hamilton’s new recording, “Save Me,” the opening track on “What I’m Feelin.” Over the past two years Darrell has produced, co-written and performed on three songs from Zac Brown’s latest project “Heavy Is the Head,” in addition to producing Jonathan Edwards latest and Malcolm Holcombe’s upcoming 2017 release, “Pretty Little Troubles.” But these partnerships all makes sense: Although they hail from different genres, these artists are master craftsmen at fitting words to notes.
