    Art History Conversations are free experiences for teens to learn more about art history using the DMA collection as a launching point.

    Ancient Mediterranean: Ancient Art for Ordinary People is presented by Ryan Tidwell, M.A. Candidate with The Edith O'Donnell Institute of Art History at UT Dallas.

    Registration is required one week prior to each session. Participants will attend on a first-come first-served basis. Attendance is limited to 20 students.

    Do you like to color outside the lines and think outside the box? You’re in good company! Join us for a week of “rebellious” fun as we learn about artists who broke the rules and paved their own way in the art world. From Monet and Morisot creating art that leaves an impression, to contemporary artists making art out of advertisements, we’ll explore how artists challenge themselves and viewers to see the world in new ways. In the studio, try some artistic rule breaking of your own as we paint with unusual tools, transform recyclables into masterpieces, and become art rebels!

    Honey, I shrunk the ART! We’ll bring the tiny art show craze to the DMA and make paintings the size of a Post-it® note, sculptures as big as your thumb, and more. Experiment with size and scale, play with color and shape, and create teeny tiny art that makes a big, big impact. All you’ll need is a super-sized imagination (and perhaps a magnifying glass, too).

We’ll dig deep into the lives of famous artists, search for clues in paintings, visit the DMA’s Conservation Studio, nose around art made thousands of years ago, and more. In the studio, swap your detective hat for your artist’s apron and investigate the mysteries of materials as we paint, collage, and draw. The game is afoot!

    Get comfortable with the basics of painting and drawing. Explore the Museum’s galleries to see how different artists use paint, and then develop your own unique painting style. Have fun experimenting in the studio as you build skills in brush techniques, color mixing, and design while using watercolor, tempera, inks, mixed media, and acrylics. Sketch in the galleries, and then grab a paintbrush to paint big in the studio.

    Can you tell a story with fabric, buttons, and thread? Find out as we learn basic stitches and use fabrics and fibers to create works of art. We’ll look at early American quilts, Anishinaabeg beaded bags, colorful mola from Panama, and Indonesian batiks to see how artists have stitched their stories. Then, in the studio, you’ll create a fabric collage and a one-of-a-kind plushie, and experiment with yarn, buttons, and beads.
