PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Come be a part of live radio being made. Live from Here with Chris Thile is a Saturday-night destination for audiences everywhere. This variety show features a unique blend of musical performances, comedy and audience interaction. Acclaimed musician and songwriter Chris Thile welcomes a wide range of well-known and up-and-coming talent to share the stage and create a beautiful listening experience.

With special guests Gabriel Kahane, War & Treaty, and Negin Farsad

Singer-songwriter and composer Gabriel Kahane has recorded critically-acclaimed albums including this year’s Book of Travelers, The Ambassador, The Fiction Issue, and Where Are the Arms. As a composer of concert works, Kahane has been commissioned by Carnegie Hall, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Oregon Symphony, American Composers Orchestra, and Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. He has appeared as soloist with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Colorado Symphony, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and A Far Cry.

As The War and Treaty, Michael and Tanya Trotter serve up healing and pain robbing with freewheeling joy on their new full-length album, Healing Tide. Funky bass lines, keys, lap steel, acoustic strings, and stripped-down percussion create a swampy Southern soul bed for the couple’s transcendent vocals. A tour-de-force produced by Buddy Miller, the collection swaggers with confidence only gained by artists who are wholly, proudly, themselves.

Negin Farsad was named one of 50 Funniest Women by Huffington Post, named one of the 10 Best Feminist Comedians by Paper Magazine, and was selected as a TEDFellow for her work in social justice comedy. She even gave a TEDTalk because they slipped up and let a comedian on their vaunted stage. Farsad is host of Fake the Nation, a political comedy podcast on the Earwolf network and she’s a regular panelist on NPR’s Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me.

Live From Here with Chris Thile is presented by MPR.

Talking Volumes: Sally Field - Hosted by Kerri Miller

Talking Volumes is Presented by Minnesota Public Radio and Star Tribune

Sally Field and “In Pieces”
Sally Field is one of the most celebrated, beloved and enduring actors of our time, and now she tells her story for the first time in this intimate and haunting literary memoir. In her own words, she writes about a challenging and lonely childhood, the craft that helped her find her voice, and a powerful emotional legacy that shaped her journey as a daughter and a mother.

With raw honesty and the fresh, pitch-perfect prose of a natural-born writer, and with all the humility and authenticity her fans have come to expect, Field brings readers behind the scenes for not only the highs and lows of her star-studded early career in Hollywood, but deep into the truth of her lifelong relationships including, most importantly, her complicated love for her own mother. Powerful and unforgettable, In Pieces is an inspiring and important account of life as a woman in the second half of the twentieth century.

In 2018, the band Low will turn twenty-five. Since 1993, Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker—the married couple whose heaven-and-earth harmonies have always held the band’s center—have pioneered a subgenre, shrugged off its strictures, recorded a Christmas classic, become a magnetic onstage force, and emerged as one of music’s most steadfast and vital vehicles for pulling light from our darkest emotional recesses. But Low will not commemorate its first quarter-century with mawkish nostalgia or safe runs through songbook favorites. Instead, in faithfully defiant fashion, Low will release its most brazen, abrasive (and, paradoxically, most empowering) album ever: Double Negative, an unflinching eleven-song quest through snarling static and shattering beats that somehow culminates in the brightest pop song of Low’s career.

IN/VIA
IN/VIA is the synth piano project of Minneapolis musician (and Dark Dark Dark songwriter) Nona Marie Invie. Using layers of synthesizers, pianos and samples, Invie creates a warm atmosphere that invites the listener to quiet and look inward. Will be accompanied here by Fletcher Barnhill on electric bass.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

As a performer, songwriter and producer, Richard Marx’s nearly three-decade-long career has had innumerable highlights.

The Chicago native has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, starting with his self-titled debut which went to #8 and spawned four Top 5 singles, including the chart-topping “Hold on to the Nights,” with “Don’t Mean Nothing” earning him a Grammy nomination for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. The follow-up, 1989’s Repeat Offender, was even more successful, hitting #1 and going quadruple-platinum with two #1 singles in “Satisfied” and “Right Here Waiting.” When both Rush Street (with two #1 AC hits in “Keep Coming Back” and “Hazard”) and Paid Vacation (with its #1 AC hit, “Now and Forever”) went platinum, Marx achieved a seven-year string of triumphs that rivaled any in pop-rock music history. To this day, he is the only male artist in history to have his first seven singles reach the Top 5 on the Billboard charts.

On July 8, 2014, he released his eighth album, Beautiful Goodbye, featuring all new material such as its first single and video, “Whatever We Started.” Fans may find Marx’s eighth studio album, a bit of a departure from his previous albums. According to the Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter, he set out to make a deliberately sexy album. “The songs on this record were influenced greatly by everyone from Sade to Bebel Gilberto to various EDM artists to even Chopin. I’m known for romantic music in the past, but this music I wrote is all more sensual and ethereal, and the lyrics are more adventurous than I’ve been willing to go in the past.”

Every track on the new album also incorporates an orchestral element, and the recording of the tracks was, according to Marx, “a thrill beyond anything I’ve done in the studio. And singing these songs brought out what I believe are the most effortless vocals of my recording career, so far.”

All the tracks on Beautiful Goodbye are written and produced by Marx except “Getaway,” co-written and produced with Walter Afanasieff; “Forgot To Remember” co-written with Vertical Horizon frontman and frequent Marx collaborator, Matt Scannell; “Turn Off The Night” co-written with multi-hit songwriter David Hodges, and the title track, co-written with Daisy Fuentes. A special edition of Beautiful Goodbye will also be available exclusively at Target and features two additional songs: “Moscow Calling,” a collaboration between Marx and well known EDM artist and DJ Morgan Page, and “Just Go.”
Richard has made a commitment to several different causes, from donating the royalties from his hit single, “Should’ve Known Better,” to build a room at the NYU Medical Center for pediatric cancer patients, to his recording of “Children of the Night,” which brought attention to the plight of homeless children on the streets, raising more than $500k for the Children of the Night Foundation. Marx has also performed benefit concerts over the years for the TJ Martell Foundation, Toys for Tots, Make a Wish Foundation, the American Cancer Society, Best Buddies and the Special Olympics. Richard and his band entertained the U.S. troops stationed in Germany and, since 2008, he has hosted an annual event in Chicago for the Ronald McDonald House Charities, the first of which featured a concert by Richard and Kenny Rogers. Richard has also organized an annual all-star benefit concert for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, raising more than $4 million for research to cure the disease.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

Mathew Janczewski brings his subtle, rich and viscerally honest choreographic voice to the Fitzgerald stage for the second time with a politically poignant repertoire from ARENA DANCES.

Janczewski & dancers utilize contemporary dance as a platform for social and political dialogue to progress, make change and improve our community and the world we live in together. Throughout the entire performance runs an undercurrent of hope: a sense that society is on the brink of learning the difficult lessons of the past, and could finally be ready to progress.

*To spark conversation and positive change, ARENA will be partnering with gun control activist & community groups as part of hold my hand.

“Physically brilliant yet emotionally intimate, dramatic, widely varied, witty, and heartfelt.” — Lightsey Darst, MNArtists.org (2011)

The title work of the show, hold my hand, explores issues of gun violence in America and is built on the choral score Requiem by MN composer and recent 2018 McKnight Fellowship recipient Joshua Clausen. Clausen’s work takes its inspiration from a data sonification project of gun violence statistics created by Sophie Chou at Public Radio International. This premiere will include high school students from the surrounding area, ARENA’s six company members, and the MPLS (imPulse) Choir led by Samuel Grace with special guest sorprano, Carrie Henneman Shaw.

Also premiering is One Room, a trio to the powerful music of Nils Frahm.

The program additionally includes two popular works from the company’s history,
revitalized for our current day. Opening the show is Run With Me, a lush, sinuous men’s quartet of immense physicality. Lightsey Darst for mnartists writes: “Run With Me is a vivid whirl, densely layered and evocative... with moments of crystalline clarity. Melancholic, romantic, dramatic, and lovely.” The second remount, Threshold, was first created in 2010 as a women’s sextet, inspired by the space between entering or leaving, as if in the middle of the doorway: on the brink of leaving something behind, the future in sight, but not quite yet a reality.

Cream was a chemical explosion like no other, the blueprint for every supergroup to follow and the heavy blues precursor to Hendrix, Zeppelin and so much more. Fifty years since their earth-shaking debut album, the bloodlines of that hallowed trilogy come together to pay tribute to Cream's legendary four-album reign over the psychedelic frontier of the late 1960s. Kofi BAKER (son of Ginger) and Malcolm BRUCE (son of Jack) unite with Will JOHNS (Eric's nephew by marriage and son of Zeppelin/ Stones/ Hendrix engineer Andy) to unleash the lightning that electrified a generation. CRASH TEST DUMMIES TO REUNITE FOR NORTH AMERICAN TOUR TO CELEBRATE THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF SEMINAL ALBUM
“GOD SHUFFLED HIS FEET”

BAND TO PLAY ALBUM IN ITS ENTIRETY

Los Angeles, CA – September 18, 2018 – Canadian rock band Crash Test Dummies will reunite for the first time in 17-years to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their seminal sophomore album God shuffled His Feet. The north American tour will launch November 23 and will feature the original line-up of Brad Roberts, Ellen Reid, Dan Roberts, and Mitch Dorge.

"After a huge hit in Canada with our folksier debut album, our next effort was dubbed ‘too new a sound’ by our Canadian compatriots. In America however, it managed to pique the interest of a new and frankly much larger group of listeners and soon 'MMM MMM MMM MMM became a bonafide hit south of our border, and eventually all over the world,” says Brad Roberts. “It was a wild ride for us that year. Now we're celebrating the 25th anniversary reuniting with our original line-up and dusting off our old set lists. It will be the first time we've toured with the full band since 2001, and we're very excited about it."

The 1993 platinum selling and Grammy-nominated album God Shuffled His Feet hit number-one in Austria and New Zealand and also reached the top five in the national albums charts of numerous countries including Australia, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland. The album reached number six in the Netherlands national albums chart, number 2 in the UK and broke the top ten landing at number 9 in the United States Billboard 200 albums chart. God Shuffled His Feet features their most unusual and highly popular single, "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" as well as other fan favorites XX and XXX. The memorable cover artwork featured the superimposed the faces of the band atop figures in the Titian painting “Bacchus and Ariadne.”

In 2008 Consequence of Sound featured GSHF in their Guilty Pleasure column stating:
God Shuffled His Feet made the Dummies famous worldwide with a handful of folk-rock songs that shattered the perception of what rock radio could play. “Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm”-yeah, the humming song about blue hair and birthmarks-had everyone from soccer moms to metal heads singing along and tapping their toes. “Afternoons and Coffeespoons,” a hypochondria and T.S. Elliot-inspired romp, soars with gorgeous acoustic strumming, the trademark quirky harmonica playing of Ben Darvill, and the angelic backup vocals of keyboardist Ellen Reid. Songs like the album’s title track, “Here I Stand Before Me,” and “How Does a Duck Know?” are odd philosophical rockers, taking on everything from theism to Descartes. I credit these particular tunes for making my college philosophy courses bearable.

Combining African history and mythology, fantasy and his own rich imagination in the story of a band of mercenaries hired to find a missing child, Marlon James has written an immersive saga of breathtaking adventure that's also a deeply involving novel. The first book in James’ Dark Star trilogy, Black Leopard, Red Wolf is both an addictive page-turner and a genre-defying epic. Bold, ambitious and captivating, it's a literary event that's great fun to read.

Marlon James is best known for his novel A Brief History of Seven Killings, which won the 2015 Man Booker Prize. Born in Jamaica, James now divides his time between Minnesota and New York.
