MAC ARNOLD & PLATE FULL O' BLUES
    WEBSITE

Mac Arnold was born in Ware Place South Carolina, one of 13 children born and raised on a sharecropper's farm. His musical journey began in the 1950's when he and his brother Leroy fashioned a guitar from a steel gas can, wood, nails, and screen wire. His early career included working with a young James Brown in the band, J. Floyd & the Shamrocks. Arnold moved to Chicago in 1965, where he worked with A.C. Reed prior to joining Muddy Waters' band in 1966. Arnold appears on the November 1966 live recording with Muddy released in 2009 as Muddy Waters - Authorized Bootleg. He formed the Soul Invaders in 1967, finding work backing up BB King, The Temptations, and others. His studio work in the 1960's includes playing bass on several notable blues albums, including Otis Spann's "The Blues Is Where It's At", and John Lee Hooker's "Live At Cafe Au Go Go". He performed in various session work after moving to California in the 1970's. Arnold's distinctive bass line can be heard on the theme for the TV show "Sanford and Son". His TV work also included a four year gig as part of the set band on "Soul Train". Mac's back at it with Plate Full O’ Blues who have been performing together for 20 years.

    JUDITH HILL
    WEBSITE

Anyone who’s followed Judith Hill’s story will recognize Letters from a Black Widow as one jaw-dropper of an album title. The tabloid-coined phrase “Black Widow” arose after the overdose deaths of her two star-making collaborators, Michael Jackson and Prince. It became a term of abuse that internet trolls hurled at the celebrated artist, driving conspiracy theories and shame campaigns – trauma that nearly ended a career that includes a Grammy for her role in the Oscar-winning documentary film “20 Feet from Stardom.”

“For years the Black Widow was such a dark presence in my life that was too looming and intimidating to even talk about,” Hill says. But a year into the pandemic, she had time and space for a momentous reckoning. “Being forced to stop allowed me to reach a deeper place, to really marinate and figure out what’s at my core, what I really needed to talk about. I found I had the courage and strength to face all this – to be authentic to my core, to dive into the whole experience, and turn an ocean of darkness into expressive fire.”

If Hill’s previous album, Baby, I’m Hollywood, was the rowdy coming-of-age tale of a mixed-race child of bohemian California, Letters from a Black Widow is a formidable battle cry – an album-length soul/funk/gospel passion play that’s spectacularly written, arranged, and performed.

Why does Thelonious Monk play the piano like that? Why is John Coltrane's music so intense? Why is Billie Holiday's voice so unique? Created in 2015 after an epiphany bandleader Justin Varnes had while teaching Jazz History at Georgia State University, the Jazz Legacy Project has an ongoing residency at the Velvet Note jazz club in Atlanta, where they have been selling out their performances for 6 years and counting. Ditching a traditional textbook in favor of playing records and telling stories about the artists to college kids who knew little or nothing about jazz proved to be a big success. It turned out that performing the artist's music and telling their stories in between proved to be an even bigger success. But it's more than just offering insight into what to listen for when listening to jazz, it's also woven into American history - as jazz itself is. Many movements in jazz are a direct result of cultural shifts in America, and connecting an artist's music to a time or an event in history can open up a new world when listening to it.

Noel Freidline - Piano and Keyboard

Jeff Kashiwa knew he was destined to be a musician following his junior introduction to woodwinds. His instincts were correct. He became known as one of the most compelling young saxophonists in contemporary jazz during his first year with The Rippingtons. Kashiwa performed hundreds of shows all over the world and appeared on many of the band’s classic recordings.

Having Established himself in the 1990s as one of the most diverse saxmen in contemporary jazz during his decade long tenure with The Rippingtons, Kashiwa’s instincts led him to more dynamic endeavors through his solo career. It surprised many when Jeff left the group to venture out on his own, but he had things to say through his own music. Kashiwa now has nine CDs released under his own name and has continued to record as a guest artist with many other artists as well. In 2004, Kashiwa founded The Sax Pack, a trio of saxophone headliners, featuring himself, Steve Cole and Kim Waters. The group released two CDs together and charmed audiences with their Rat Pack style reparte’ in tours across the U.S and abroad.

In 2006, Jeff reunited with The Rippingtons for their 20th anniversary Tour and continues to record and tour with the group as often as his busy schedule will allow. In addition to touring with The Sax Pack and his own group, Kashiwa has expanded his career to include the realm of music education, teaching various courses through the music program at shoreline community college in Seattle. His brand new CD let It Ride features a host of great musicians in the world of Contemporary Jazz; Russ Freeman, David Benoit, Chuck Loeb and Tom Schuman of Spyro Gyra. REINALDO BRAHN
    WEBSITE
    WATCH

Born in Belo Horizonte ( which means ‘beautiful horizon’), the third largest city in Brazil,  Reinaldo Brahn picked up the family guitar at age 12, curiously strummed its chords, and was hooked.  He taught himself traditional Musica Mineira, the rhythms of his native state Minas Gerais.  Gaining experience playing and singing at festivals, bars and restaurants, he worked with the renowned Brazilian vocal group Soul Makube before embarking on a solo career.  Reinaldo's experiences and collaboration with other musicians created his signature style which infuses classic Brazilian rhythms - Samba & Bossa Nova - with Funk and Jazz.

Reinaldo toured his original music throughout Brazil, and then brought his artistry to the United States.  Arriving in Charlotte, North Carolina, in October 2007, he quickly introduced his Brazilian roots to the local scene.  He creatively applies robust Brazilian style to popular American music with a truly inspiring result.  Reinaldo's specialties include singing and playing authentic Brazilian music, including Musica Popular Brasileira (MPB) and classic Sambas, as well as performing American pop songs with a strong Brazilian influence.  Veteran percussionist and producer Jim Brock refers to Reinaldo Brahn as "the new voice of Brazil".

    MIKE PHILLIPS

World renowned saxophonist Mike Phillips is known as one of the most electrifying instrumentalists today. Mike is the first musician signed by Michael Jordan to the Nike Jordan Brand, home of the Air Jordan, and is the only musician in the world to have recorded and toured with the legendary “Big Three” of American soul and pop music: Michael Jackson, Prince, and Stevie Wonder, not only as a member of the band, but as a featured soloist.

In 2023, Mike Phillips launched Keep It Moving Music (KIMM), under the SRG Jazz label imprint. He was also recently named Sr. VP of SRG Jazz at the SRG-ILS Group (distributed by UMG). He is a recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Music Business and Entrepreneurship degree, a recipient of The President’s Lifetime Achievement Award and The Georgia Citizen Award, which is the highest state-level honor given to a citizen. And notably is an amazing golfer; so, if he’s not on a stage near you, look for him on the golf course.

No stranger to the sports world, Mike has built a rapport with some of the top professional athletes today. He performs over a dozen national anthems every year for a host of sporting and business organizations such as: Professional Golfers of America (PGA), National Basketball Association (NBA), National League (NL), Major League Baseball (MLB), National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR), and the National Football League (NFL) just to mention a few. ONE IRISH ROVER

"Since 1967 I have savored every album and recording while singing along to the incredibly melodic and mystical Irish genius of George Ivan Morrison (Van’s) musical works. I have always been taken by the spiritual intent of his writings and interesting combinations of rhythmic creativity that is uniquely Van Morrison’s signature style.

Putting together the best of the old, new, and eclectic songs of Van Morrison that spans over 6 decades of musical genius is daunting but worthwhile. Someone needed to help keep the magic and spirit of Van’s incredible musical genius alive.  I have been both blessed and honored to help do just that.

Take a ride with me through Vans collection of Blues, Soul and Rock ballads all blended in a Celtic Stew of uplifting beats, heart- felt searching for understanding, soul touching melodies, and jazzy compilations that deliver you back to a rustic Irish Pub somewhere in the countryside of Ireland where the beer, Irish whiskey and music flow warmly together until the “wee hours of the mornin”.

It has long been a passion of mine to present some of the greatest music on the planet composed and written by ‘Van the Man” Morrison. Join me in that celebration!"
