Multi-Instrumentalist/Producer Zo! is Detroit-area born and raised, Silver Spring, MD based… Lorenzo Ferguson.

Influenced by a wide range of music genres introduced to him at an early age, Zo! utilizes multiple layers of thick instrumentation to shape his compositions, as demonstrated on his solo albums. While touring his own material regularly, Zo! can also be seen on stage as the keyboardist and Musical Director for GRAMMY-nominated duo, The Foreign Exchange. In 2014, he completed music work for the Adult Swim animated series, Black Dynamite. Zo! co-produced The Foreign Exchange’s 2015 release, Tales From The Land Of Milk and Honey. His SkyBreak album was released in 2016 along with its accompanying behind-the-scenes, two-time award-winning documentary, Making SkyBreak (2017). Zo! then began expanding his musical repertoire to include film scoring, completing full scores for two documentaries: Black, White & Blue (2018) and the Northwestern University commissioned, The Takeover (2018). Along with production partner, Phonte (of The Foreign Exchange/Little Brother) Zo! helped to compose music for the IFC sketch-comedy series, Sherman’s Showcase (2019). In 2019, Zo! released FourFront his fourth compilation-style album on the +FE Music imprint. Most recently, he has completed music for season two of Sherman’s Showcase (2022) with Phonte and has joined forces with powerhouse producer Tall Black Guy on their 2021 release, Abstractions. Zo! continues to emphasize the usage of live instrumentation and raw emotion as the blueprint for his music while continuing to delve into sound expansion with each album release.

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

This Tuesday night Open Mic Night at Missy Lane's debuts with Eloquent Soul hosted by Dasan Ahanu with a live band directed by Joe Holloway.

Eloquent Soul Open Mic is open to poets and vocalists. Performances are 7:30 PM- 9:30 PM.

Sign-ups start at 7:15PM First come – first served. PLEASE WRITE CLEARLY. Come on time to assure a slot.

The open mic list often gets very full very fast. Therefore we ask that people ONLY sign the open mic list for themselves.

The order in which you sign up is not necessarily the order of performance nor will it guarantee you get stage time. Both are at the discretion of the host & venue management. If we run out of time before we get to you, then you will be added to the top of the list for the next week.

Performers get 5 minutes on stage. You can perform one song or up to two poems. PLEASE RESPECT THE TIME LIMIT. If there is time available after everyone who has signed up has gone, then we will invite performers back on stage a second time.

Eloquent Soul includes a house band. We ENCOURAGE you to use the band in your performance. Please let the band leader know what song or groove you would like for them to play.

When you are next – please be ready to take the stage when you are called. If you’re not available to take the stage when you are introduced you will be bumped to the end of the list.

BE CONSIDERATE OF THE OTHER PERFORMERS. Please be quiet and
show respect for the performers on stage.

At Missy Lane’s we do not censor our artists. All language will be allowed at the show, provided that it is used responsibly. We reserve the right to limit or prohibit speech deemed problematic (hate speech, graphically violent, etc.) for our community.

The most important guideline is to be supportive and have fun! Remember that we are here to share art and community.

    About Jonathan Scales Fourchestra
You’ve heard this before, but the whimsically named Jonathan Scales Fourchestra is really tough to describe. Veering from in-your-face, jaw dropping chops and passion, to those quiet moments when the background noise disappears and you hold your breath to take in a soundscape of solitude, the power trio of electric bass (E'Lon JD), drums (Maison Guidry), and steel pans (Jonathan Scales) combines elements of jazz, classical, and progressive rock, peppered with Latin rhythms and soulful outbursts of funk. From club and festival stages across North America and Europe, and tours of Africa, Southeast and Central Asia as a Cultural Ambassador for the US Department of State, to their NPR Tiny Desk Concert featuring Béla Fleck, the Fourchestra’s live shows make even the most jaded listeners forget where they are… even if just for a precious moment.

This may seem an odd thing to say, but on the verge of releasing their eighth studio recording, Jonathan Scales Fourchestra is only now truly embracing their identity as a group. For many years, Jonathan’s live band was a fluid lineup of top-notch musicians, and even included an “all-star” version with bassist MonoNeon (Prince, Nas), drummer Sput Searight (Snarky Puppy, Snoop Dogg) and percussionist Weedie Braimah (Trombone Shorty, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah), as well as a number of other marquee players. Now, however, the Fourchestra is a decidedly indivisible band, and Jonathan is writing for the trio, not just the pans.

    ABOUT

You either know Marcus or you’ve never heard of him. He is not easily forgotten. He possesses an impressive ability to primal scream ecstatic cries of passion and enduring pain through his instrument. He is a sax man through and through; one part Coltrane, two parts Bird. But Marcus is unlike anyone you’ve ever seen pick up the saxophone. He preaches melodic sermons and sings soulful ballads like its nobody’s business.

As a renowned multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer born and based in Charlotte, North Carolina, Marcus travels nationally and internationally performing and recording on tenor sax, alto sax, soprano sax, trumpet, bass guitar, piano and as a vocalist. While he learned to do a majority of this on his own; Marcus learned to read music and sing at a very early age from his grandparents Dr. Grant and Dr. Joanne Harrison. He’s always loved music and started playing alto saxophone in 5th grade but it wasn’t until after graduating from high school and attending Central Piedmont Community College that he found his true calling. He enrolled in a jazz improvisational class under the direction of professor Bill Hanna who is a nationally and internationally recognized jazz trombonist, pianist and educator. During this time he realized his growing interest and passion for jazz and live performance along with studio performance, composition and audio engineering.

He has had the pleasure of performing and working with artists and groups such as Eric Roberson, saxophonist Mike Phillips, saxophonist James Carter, Anthony Hamilton, trombonist Jeff Bradshaw, jazz violinist Karen Briggs, Igmar Thomas and The Revive Big Band, Evan Brice, bassist Mike Manson, bassist Jacob Webb, Samoht, Chantae Cann, Lindsey Webster, Lovell Bradford Sr., Leela James, Simply Irresistible (ATL based), the play-write Miles and Coltrane: The Blue (.) by Quentin Talley, Brazilian bassist Raphael Du Valle, saxophonist Ryan Saranich, saxophonist Adrian Crutchfield, vocalist Vince Robinson and The Movement, Joseph Wooten, Nate Morton, Ronaldo Pizzi, Gerald Shynett, Taylor Lee, Don Braden, Charles McNeil, Rudy Currence, Jason Jet, Stephen Gordon, Marco Panascia, Adrian Crutchfield, Marcus Anderson, JP Bouvet, Alex Bailey, Ashlin Parker and many others.

    ABOUT

Formerly held close as one of the Northwest’s best-kept musical secrets, Jarrod Lawson has exploded as an international sensation topping charts, garnering awards, performing at prestigious venues and spawning fresh notability for Portland's burgeoning soul music scene. Ever since Lawson released his eponymous debut album in 2014, the smokey voiced singer-songwriter and virtuosic pianist has been sending positive ripples around the globe with his powerful message music. He has completed seven successful international tours with prestigious highlights extending from Rotterdam's 40th Annual North Sea Jazz Festival to Tokyo’s Billboard Live. Lawson won ‘Soul Artist Of The Year’ at the 2015 Jazz FM Awards in London, and has been dubbed “the hottest talent to hit soul music in at least ten years” (Echoes Magazine).  Returning to recording in 2020, six years after the release of his self-titled debut, Jarrod Lawson made his mark immediately, with entries at #1 on Amazon’s Jazz Albums chart and at #2 on Billboard magazine’s Contemporary Jazz Albums chart  -  for his sophomore album “Be The Change”.  In late 2022, Jarrod made a bold cross-country move from his longtime home of Portland, Oregon, out to Nashville, Tennessee in hopes of connecting to the expansive community and reservoir of opportunities that “Music City” has to offer.
