MAC ARNOLD & PLATE FULL O' BLUES
    WEBSITE

Mac Arnold was born in Ware Place South Carolina, one of 13 children born and raised on a sharecropper's farm. His musical journey began in the 1950's when he and his brother Leroy fashioned a guitar from a steel gas can, wood, nails, and screen wire. His early career included working with a young James Brown in the band, J. Floyd & the Shamrocks. Arnold moved to Chicago in 1965, where he worked with A.C. Reed prior to joining Muddy Waters' band in 1966. Arnold appears on the November 1966 live recording with Muddy released in 2009 as Muddy Waters - Authorized Bootleg. He formed the Soul Invaders in 1967, finding work backing up BB King, The Temptations, and others. His studio work in the 1960's includes playing bass on several notable blues albums, including Otis Spann's "The Blues Is Where It's At", and John Lee Hooker's "Live At Cafe Au Go Go". He performed in various session work after moving to California in the 1970's. Arnold's distinctive bass line can be heard on the theme for the TV show "Sanford and Son". His TV work also included a four year gig as part of the set band on "Soul Train". Mac's back at it with Plate Full O’ Blues who have been performing together for 20 years.

    JUDITH HILL
    WEBSITE

Anyone who’s followed Judith Hill’s story will recognize Letters from a Black Widow as one jaw-dropper of an album title. The tabloid-coined phrase “Black Widow” arose after the overdose deaths of her two star-making collaborators, Michael Jackson and Prince. It became a term of abuse that internet trolls hurled at the celebrated artist, driving conspiracy theories and shame campaigns – trauma that nearly ended a career that includes a Grammy for her role in the Oscar-winning documentary film “20 Feet from Stardom.”

“For years the Black Widow was such a dark presence in my life that was too looming and intimidating to even talk about,” Hill says. But a year into the pandemic, she had time and space for a momentous reckoning. “Being forced to stop allowed me to reach a deeper place, to really marinate and figure out what’s at my core, what I really needed to talk about. I found I had the courage and strength to face all this – to be authentic to my core, to dive into the whole experience, and turn an ocean of darkness into expressive fire.”

If Hill’s previous album, Baby, I’m Hollywood, was the rowdy coming-of-age tale of a mixed-race child of bohemian California, Letters from a Black Widow is a formidable battle cry – an album-length soul/funk/gospel passion play that’s spectacularly written, arranged, and performed.

Jeff Kashiwa knew he was destined to be a musician following his junior introduction to woodwinds. His instincts were correct. He became known as one of the most compelling young saxophonists in contemporary jazz during his first year with The Rippingtons. Kashiwa performed hundreds of shows all over the world and appeared on many of the band’s classic recordings.

It surprised many when Jeff left the group to venture out on his own, but he had things to say through his own music. Kashiwa now has nine CDs released under his own name and has continued to record as a guest artist with many other artists as well. In 2004, Kashiwa founded The Sax Pack, a trio of saxophone headliners, featuring himself, Steve Cole and Kim Waters. The group released two CDs together and charmed audiences with their Rat Pack style reparte’ in tours across the U.S and abroad.

In 2006, Jeff reunited with The Rippingtons for their 20th anniversary Tour and continues to record and tour with the group as often as his busy schedule will allow. In addition to touring with The Sax Pack and his own group, Kashiwa has expanded his career to include the realm of music education, teaching various courses through the music program at shoreline community college in Seattle. REINALDO BRAHN
    WEBSITE
    WATCH

Born in Belo Horizonte ( which means ‘beautiful horizon’), the third largest city in Brazil,  Reinaldo Brahn picked up the family guitar at age 12, curiously strummed its chords, and was hooked.  He taught himself traditional Musica Mineira, the rhythms of his native state Minas Gerais.  Gaining experience playing and singing at festivals, bars and restaurants, he worked with the renowned Brazilian vocal group Soul Makube before embarking on a solo career.  Reinaldo's experiences and collaboration with other musicians created his signature style which infuses classic Brazilian rhythms - Samba & Bossa Nova - with Funk and Jazz.

Reinaldo toured his original music throughout Brazil, and then brought his artistry to the United States.  Arriving in Charlotte, North Carolina, in October 2007, he quickly introduced his Brazilian roots to the local scene.  He creatively applies robust Brazilian style to popular American music with a truly inspiring result.  Reinaldo's specialties include singing and playing authentic Brazilian music, including Musica Popular Brasileira (MPB) and classic Sambas, as well as performing American pop songs with a strong Brazilian influence.  Veteran percussionist and producer Jim Brock refers to Reinaldo Brahn as "the new voice of Brazil".

    JAMES PJ SPRAGGINS

    WEBSITE

PJ has dreamed of performing internationally as well astouring for a national artist. 2023 has proven to be the year of dreams coming true as he is currently touring with two-time Grammy Award winning R&B vocalist Peabo Bryson whose first stop is the 2023 Soul Train Cruise. Prior to this, PJ was showcasing his talents at the Bahrain Jazz Festival with Jeff Bradshaw. When he’s not touring or producing beautifully-crafted music, he provides the backbeat for a host of highly acclaimed artists from jazz guitarist Eric Essix to, most recently, the dynamic, chart-topping jazz flutist Kim Scott.

Listeners clamoring for more of Spraggins pushed “Nocturnal Drive,” from his 2006 album “Light of Day” to more than 8 million streams across all platforms followed by “Pure Logic” (2012) album with over three-million streams on YouTube. Many followers and subscribers, unaware of his nearly two-decades of musical contributions, think his timeless pieces are new, however, they soon discover he has a history of producing sounds that both encourage and inspire listeners of all demographics. An independent artist who finds new ways to connect his music to an ever-expanding audience, PJ also merges it on social media with his very own scenic drone footage.

Coupled with his albums, tours and various projects, PJ has written with startling candor about inspiration, faith and healing, which is without a doubt a compliment to “Stick It Out” as it exemplifies his determination to overcome personal challenges. “I want to send a positive message to everyone that’s going to listen to it. I’ve gained so much confidence from writing this album and that’s what I want people to take away.”

Now, poised for bigger and better opportunities ahead, James “PJ” Spraggins’ tireless energy, positivity and drive permeates this work with an enduring, immersive quality that refuses to give in or settle for anything less than to ‘Stick It Out.

    EMANUEL WYNTER
    WEBSITE

Hailing from Charlotte, classically trained violinist and songwriter Emanuel Wynter is taking ears and stages by storm with a distinctive sound and a lively, high-spirited stage presence that is infectious to everyone in the room. Taking influence from artists such as Anthony Hamilton, Leon Bridges, and Gary Clark Jr., Emanuel’s sound is a unique, vibrant, and expressive blend of R&B and Rock that manages to be raw in emotion and refined, sonically. He finds a way to sing, not only through rich and soulful vocals, but through his electrifying violin playing that is, at times, quite reminiscent of electric guitar. With dynamic musicianship and sincere lyricism, Emanuel Wynter is sure to keep your toes tapping and your soul singing. In past years, Emanuel played a supporting role as auxiliary violinist in other NC-based groups, such as 9daytrip, Stick & Stones, and many more, but 2018 was the year in which he introduced himself as a songwriter and artist with the release of Cosmos. That ultimately led to his first EP release in early 2020, titled These Past Two Years, that Delaney Clifford from CLTure described as “an album that refuses to be overlooked.” In the year of 2022, Emanuel has been hard at work, writing and recording music that begins the next chapter of his professional career, starting with the release of his first live album, titled From Orbit, in October of 2023.
