Mention pop piano players and the discussion will quickly move to Elton John and Billy Joel.  The two iconic piano men helped define the 70’s and 80’s.  Masters of some of the most indelible melodies in pop music history, Elton John and Billy Joel easily helped write the cultural soundtrack for more than two decades.

November 2019 Middle C Jazz opened its doors to establish itself as one of the premier jazz venues on the Eastern seaboard.  Four months later the world stopped as a global pandemic swept the planet.  Middle C found itself dead in the water.  This would and did spell the end for many venues.  But Middle C persevered.  Under the guidance of Larry Farber, a professional with decades of experience in the music business, Middle C persevered and is thriving today.

Noel Freidline and Maria Howell played the grand opening of Middle C two years ago.  They return for the Middle C anniversary with “We’re Still Standing:  A Jazz Celebration of Elton John and Billy Joel.  Joined by his masterful quartet and chanteuse extraordinaire Maria Howell, Noel and Maria will weave in an out of reinterpretations of such classics as “New York State of Mind” “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” “Only the Good Die Young” and “Rocket Man” and many more.

NOEL FREIDLINE
Pianist, vocalist, writer, arranger and educator, doesn’t come close to all things Noel Freidline! As a Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of North Florida, with a BA in Music, Noel has been the bandleader of The Noel Freidline Quintet for over 26 years. He has numerous recordings to his credit, and has performed at jazz festivals from the Jacksonville Jazz Festival (FL)…to the Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland)…not to mention, a 3-year stint at the world famous Bellagio in Las Vegas, as the house band, leading his NFQ, where he performed for actress Julia Robert’s surprise 35th birthday party.

MARIA HOWELL
For over 35 years, this petite NC native, who splits her time between both the east coast and the west coast, has developed her career as a singer, actor, and voiceover artist. Her debut acting role was the choir soloist in the Oscar Nominated film, “The Color Purple”. She has gone on to appear in hit TV shows as Lifetime’s “Army Wives”, NBC’s “Revolution”, and CBS’s “Criminal Minds”. Feature films…“The Blind Side”, “Hidden Figures”, and “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”. As a song stylist, Maria has shared the musical stage with legendary artists as, Nancy Wilson, George Benson, Ray Charles, Earl Klugh, brothers Ronnie and Hubert Laws, and veteran actor/singer, Keith David.

Jason “Slim” Gambill Is a multi-genre guitarist, producer, composer, arranger and songwriter. He is best known as the lead guitarist for the multi- platinum Big Machine Recording Artist Lady A, who has sold more than 16 million albums worldwide, racked up 7 GRAMMYs and countless ACM, CMA and People’s Choice Awards, and had 9 #1 songs.

Slim Gambill
For the past 12 years, music fans across the globe have come to know guitarist Jason “Slim” Gambill as the secret weapon of country superstars Lady A. Of course, he makes sure he’s hard to miss: His two-foot-long braids are as easily recognizable as his fiery, hook-filled, rock-and-soul-infused solos. In short, when it comes to authenticity and individuality, Gambill is as real as it gets.

So it comes as something of a head scratcher that he’s called his first solo album Fake Jazz & Theme Songs, especially when there’s nary a smidgen of a false note or an overly stylized moment to be found on the entire disc. With characteristic modesty, Gambill explains the tongue-in-cheek first half of the title thusly: “I guess you could say I’m a tourist when it comes to jazz, much in the way that I’ve been to London, but I’ve never lived there. My music is very informed by the genre, but I would never put myself on the level of guys who have devoted their lives to jazz.”

Which isn’t to say that Gambill hasn’t put in his time with jazz. Back when he was a student at the University of Southern California, he spent countless hours transcribing standards as part of his studies in the Studio Jazz Guitar Program. “It was great training, but I just couldn’t see spending a week writing out somebody else’s solo,” he says. “I wanted to write and play my own music. That’s what I was itching to do.”

As for the “theme songs” portion of the title, it harkens back to Gambill’s earliest days as a player, when he would sit in front of the TV and jam along to the music in ‘80s police dramas. “I learned so much about the guitar that way,” he says. “I still love to practice to the TV. I don’t even consider it practice – it’s just fun.”

Ace Livingston’s musical artistry creates a rich, passionate, and emotional journey inspired by his life. His current CD, My Metamorphosis (2014), and debut album, The Ace Livingston Project (2007), complement his extensive and successful musical career as a sideman and solo artist. Ace Livingston grew up in Jamaica and was influenced by athletics and music. He actively pursued dreams of becoming a professional soccer player and fondly remembers the presence of music in his home. As a child, he took piano lessons, but at 8 years old he picked up a bass and proved to be a natural. He was so enthralled with the instrument and determined to play that fellow congregants often propped him in a chair with his bass so that he would play for them. Ace played for a church singing group with his brothers and father, a pastor who played the saxophone. At 13 years old Ace moved to Connecticut with his family and enjoyed music as a pastime. His focus remained on fostering his soccer skills until an injury immediately ended his dreams for a professional soccer career.

While studying manufacturing and engineering in college, Ace prospered as a bass player by broadening his scope and performance style for a variety of music genres. His passion for music allowed him to cope with the abrupt end to his soccer dreams and became the driving force in defining his sense of purpose. Ace committed to pursuing a full-time career in music and co-founded a jazz band. After his breakthrough performance at a music festival in Mexico, hosted by Sean "Diddy" Combs, Ace was presented with opportunities to tour as a bassist for many A-list artists. Ace Livingston's eclectic skills and versatility are especially outstanding during his live performances. He has gained national and international notoriety for his musical and professional reputation. His dynamic musical resume includes tours and collaborations with Harry Connick, Jr., 98 Degrees, J. Lo, Pink, and Joe. Ace has also toured the world playing gospel with Youthful Praise, jazz with Alex Bugnon, Israel Houghton & New Breed, and pop & R&B with Bobby Brown, Rachelle Farrell, Chico DeBarge, Usher, and Jaheim.

Willis Hickerson is a Grammy-nominated, Stellar Award-winning musician and producer. The son of an accomplished jazz/bebop saxophonist and a phenomenal alto Gospel singer, Willis grew up in a house filled with all styles of music.  Jazz, Gospel, R&B, Blues, Classical, and early Rock and Roll all filled the air on a daily basis. As his father moved from the stage to the pulpit, Willis began playing drums, piano, and conducting choirs at his father’s church at the age of eight. He has since dedicated his life to the art of music.

Willis has been blessed to work with such international artists as Patti LaBelle, Earth, Wind and Fire, Melba Moore, Narada Michael Walden, Lecresia Campbell, Dorothy Norwood, Shirley Caesar, Darryl Coley, Yolanda Adams, The San Francisco Philharmonic Orchestra, and Edwin Hawkins just to name a few.

Willis has appeared on several nationally syndicated television shows, including The Bobby Jones Gospel Show, The Stellar Gospel Music Awards, and Singsation, hosted by Vicki Winans. Willis has performed on stages from Harlem’s Apollo Theater to the Great Cathedral of Germany. From the National Blues Festival in Portugal to the Gospel Festival in Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands. And Willis has appeared with internationally known artists on the stage of the Bay Area’s renown Yoshi’s Jazz Club. But perhaps Willis’ most loved venue is the many local churches across the United States where he has been blessed to play.

Willis has served as Musical Director for the Grammy Nominated, Stellar Award winning Rev. Ernest Davis, Jr.’s Wilmington Chester Mass Choir, Swarthmore College Upward Bound Program, Merck & Co. Black History Program, Philadelphia Sunoco Welcome America Great Gospel Gathering, and Westminster Choir College of Princeton New Jersey.

Music Is His Gift. Rodney “Keys” Shelton is the quiet storm in the music industry. Rodney began his career at the tender age of 13. While pursuing a degree at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina, Rodney continues to develop his gift of music. Unwearingly in his work ethic, the young Rodney Shelton started touring the east coast with the show band “Time Square” and only after a few years of touring, Rodney moved into his calling as a songwriter/producer creating hundreds of songs for signed artist.

In the early 90’s after meeting with the Legendary Music promoter/manager “Howard Rosen”, that Rosen encounter lead to another encounter with the Legendary producer Stewart Levine and Jolie Jones (daughter of Quincy Jones) in king a production deal.

With the legends at work, shopping “the demo” to top record labels, the band “Curio” signed a deal with Motown records. During the recording of their album, the band unique sound, the band performed in the HIT movie “Another 48 hours” featuring Eddie Murphy, doing three songs on the movie soundtrack.

While signed to Motown, Rodney met R&B singer “Keith Washington” and along with Marsha Jenkins wrote the NOW platinum record “Kissing You”, which after 20 years is still rocking the airwaves!
