But tensions run high on the ship as the traditional sailing crew battles against new faster diesel ships for their livelihood. Some of the men see the boy plucked from the waves as a bad omen and want to give him back to the ocean. The score is filled with rousing songs of the sea and adventure.

Matt Nakoa is an award-winning songwriter, singer, and multi-instrumentalist. A modern troubadour, he makes his home on the highways and concert stages of America and appears regularly with folk music icon Tom Rush. The Boston Globe says of Nakoa, “Between his piano chops and heartfelt originals on guitar, he drops jaws.”

With a perspective equally influenced by her Texas roots and her Cape Cod home, Americana singer-songwriter Monica Rizzio has emerged as one of the finest talents in the East Coast music scene.  It’s clear she has a keen ability to connect; her songs are often autobiographical but delivered through a fictional approach that aids in creating a universal experience for the listener -- whether it’s expressed using her trademark sense of humor or with such striking honesty that the pain in her voice is tangible.

Captain Jack & The Strangers, comprised of six individuals hailing from Gloucester, MA (45 min north of Boston) with over 30 years experience in music and performance. The band is fronted by 24 year old piano phenom, Jack Favazza, who brings a youthful exuberance to this classic American songbook. This group plays a wide catalogue of music from America's own Piano Man, Billy Joel, spanning his entire musical career from the 70's, 80's, and 90's. Playing both well known hits, alongside of b-side fan favorites, there are surely songs to appease any audience member.

With a long standing passion for the music of Billy Joel, the band formed in late 2022, after founding members had seen a performance of Billy at the legendary Fenway Park in Boston, MA during the summer of that same year. That performance solidified the decision to perform Billy Joel's music to as many people as possible. Gloucester has a long history of talented artists, and Captain Jack & The Strangers is no different. A local "supergroup" of musicians from well known acts such as Groove Therapy, The Spynz, Mystery Meat, and the Neon 90's have formed this group to bring you the high energy, soft somber moments, and everything in between that Billy Joel is so well known for. Listening to any song at a show will surely invoke your favorite memories and emotions when you hear a specific Billy Joel song done in a way that only Captain Jack & The Strangers can do.

Lakes Region Mental Health Center is honored to present Sarah Blacker in concert at the Colonial Theater in Laconia, on Tuesday, October 24th, at 7:00 p.m.

The concert will benefit Lakes Region Mental Health Center, helping to provide comprehensive mental health services and community education to residents of the 24 towns that they serve in Belknap and Southern Grafton counties.

ABOUT SARAH BLACKER

Named 'Female Performer of the Year' at the New England Music Awards, a Boston-Music Award nominee and CBS Boston 'Artist to Watch,' Blacker has toured extensively, internationally and nationally, supporting artists such as Paula Cole, Sara Bareilles, Jefferson Starship, and America, to name a few. She is a one-of-a-kind performer and prolific songwriter, having released 3 full-length albums and 2 EPs. Blacker is regularly compared to Joni Mitchell with her “stop-you-dead-in-your-tracks” vocals and unique harmonic twists.

Blacker has a personal mission to support mental health initiatives such as this benefit concert. She is a practicing Psychotherapist and Board-Certified Music Therapist. With over 20 years in the field working with all age groups from newborn to end-of-life, she has practiced in hospitals, schools, skilled nursing facilities, inpatient and outpatient mental health facilities as well as private practice. She likes to provide information during her performances

Blacker lives in Salem, MA with her award-winning song-leader, producer, singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist husband and her dog, Bruce (who is Insta-famous). She is currently in the studio recording new music slated for release later this year.

LRMHC is a private, non-profit organization founded in 1966, designated by the state of NH as the Community Mental Health Center serving Belknap and Southern Grafton Counties.  LRMHC provides comprehensive, integrated mental health treatment for people living with - and recovering from - mental illness and/or emotional distress.  In Fiscal Year 2023, LRMHC’s 200 employees served almost 4,000 children, adults, older adults and families.

For over 50 years, Tower of Power has delivered the best in funk and soul music.“We were a Soul band called The Motowns.” recalls Emilio Castillo. “Rocco was the bass player, I was there, and my brother was the drummer. I met “Doc” Kupka back in 1968, and gave him an audition. He came in the band, and we eventually changed our name to the Tower of Power.” The reason for the band name change was that they had a specific goal in mind. 

East Bay Grease defined their sound and landed them with Warner Brothers. Bump City, their 1972 debut for the label, was a hit on both the Billboard 200 and the R&B Albums chart, and netted them the hits “You’re Still A Young Man” and “Down to The Nightclub.” The 70s were a boom period with radio classics like “So Very Hard to Go” and “What Is Hip?,” and the band continued to tour and record over the years. Castillo says their love of the stage is the same today as it was back in 1968.
