Launched in August of 2020, Tuesday Casual Collaborations at 185 King Street has become a cornerstone of the vibrant Brevard music community. Every week Travis Book assembles a unique group of musicians for a one-time-only show, drawing on his vast network of friends and growing repertoire of musical styles. From Bluegrass to Blues, Songwriter to Americana, Country to Funk, Travis and his ever-evolving cast of local and national (even international) musicians consistently hit the sweet spot between preparation and spontaneity. “Eventually, I hope to play with everyone!” he occasionally boasts, and he’s well on his way. Travis has hosted a wide range of musicians, including: Anders Beck, Nicki Bluhm, Josh Daniel, Beppe Gambetta, Mike Guggino, Vince Herman, Sierra Hull, Cris Jacobs, Jim Lauderdale, Lindsay Lou, Steve McMurry, Mimi Naja, Tim O’Brien, Woody Platt, Jon Stickley, Kyle Tuttle, and Cristina Vane. He also regularly employs the skills of world-class local musicians like Jeff Sipe, Mike Ashworth, Tommy Maher, Bennett Sullivan, and Derick Gardner. Every week is unique, the musical styles wide-ranging, but the one thing that remains constant is the intention, positivity, and charisma that Travis brings to each and every show.

Tonight Travis will be playing with his vintage country band with Devin Neel on drums, Mary Lucey on bass, Tim Gardner on fiddle and Ryan Stigmon on lap steel.

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

Columbia, SC’s George Fetner and the Strays have steadily gained attention from music-lovers and musicians alike. Culling influences from nine proficient performers, the band has developed a soulful, southern sound rooted in rhythm and blues, improvisatory rock, and captivating musical left turns.

After polishing their large, seasoned sound with festival appearances at Fall for Greenville, St. Pat’s in Five Points, the Jam Room Music Festival, JerryFest and others, GFATS released “Merry Run Around” in 2021, a live album showcasing brassy takes on Grateful Dead favorites, “both utterly unlike anything you would ever hear at a Dead concert and yet wonderfully, soothingly familiar to fans and newcomers alike” (Free Times).

GFATS released their debut LP “Longer Like This” in the summer of 2020. Recorded at the Jam Room to tape and pressed to vinyl: “the band’s joyful vibe and experimental sound spill out from the speakers, filling the room and pulling the listener to their feet in an impromptu dance party with nine of Columbia’s most daring musical exhibitionists” (The State).

Released in 2018, their self-titled debut EP featured for the first time an extended lineup of musicians, “all of whom come together for a rollicking, raucous (and brassy!) joyride” (SC Music Guide). That extended lineup now is more common than not, adding percussion, horns, and keyboards to the two-guitar quartet. “Whereas most local acts would have turned this expansion into a trainwreck, Fetner expertly guided his ensemble into something that sounded, in fact, bigger than its parts, evoking the stadium grandeur of U2, the worldly musings of Peter Gabriel, and, yes, the loose-limbed feelgoods of Phish” (Free Times).

    Catherine Allgrim - bass trombone
Moses Andrews, III - keyboards, vocals
    Davis Bowers - saxophone
    Craig Butterfield - bass
    Anthony Charles - guitar, vocals
    Matt Fenech - drums
    George Fetner - guitar, vocals
    Will Melven - trumpet
    Jeff Vaughn - percussion

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

The Knotty G’s goal is simple: to create music and an experience at their shows they feel is genuine. Gritty yet funky performances fuse with the band’s jovial nature and invite audiences to take part in the revelatory power of music while still managing to tap into plenty of fun. Though The Knotty G’s are known to approach genres in unconventional ways, doing so with great intention takes their soul-soaked mountain music to a special and reverent place, a genuine place, and a place where by the end of the show, you feel as though you’ve reconnected with some old friends.

In the short time they've been a team, they have amassed an impressive list of stages and festivals, including: the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, The Blue Ridge Pride Festival, Strangecreek Campout, Wormtown Music Festival, and The Ladybug Festival.

In 2019, The Knotty G’s released their first album, One Small Glove, which encompassed the Americana roots they have in their music and in true Knotty fashion, the joking flair that accompanies their performances.

In December 2021, they released “Set Sail,” their first full length studio album recorded with GRAMMY winning producer Matt Williams (Travers Brothership, The Get Right Band, Tall Tall Trees, Jonathan Scales) at The Eagle Room located just outside of Asheville. The album showcases genre jumping compositions tied together with the same singular soul-soaked thread that weaves it’s way through all of their music.

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
We are beyond grateful to live in a county that has such a strong commitment to educating the next generation of musicians and keeping the rich Appalachian culture of music alive.  The Junior Appalachian Musician (JAM) program envisions a world in which all children have the opportunity to experience community through the joy of participating in traditional mountain music together. Their mission is to provide communities with the tools and support they need to teach children to play and dance to traditional old time and bluegrass music. They believe that children who are actively engaged in traditional mountain music are more connected and better prepared to strengthen their communities for future generations.   Jam 4 Jam is an annual benefit concert where the bluegrass greats of our community come to play to raise awareness and funds for the program.  Not only are these musicians volunteering their time, a lot of them are active teachers and mentors within the JAM program.

This years benefit will be held on Monday, July 1st.  We will kick the evening off with a showcase of current Jam students at 5:30.  Pretty Little Goat will play at 6:15 and the Pisgah Pickers (Woody Platt, Mike Guggino, Mike Ashworth, Bennett Sullivan and Travis Book) with finish the night off.
All ticket proceeds will go to The Junior Appalachian Musicians of Transylvania County and there will also be a silent auction.

Table seating is very limited for this show but there is plenty of general admission space available.  The indoor space behind the seated area is available for standing room and the backyard has extra seating available.  You may bring a lawn chair for the backyard area.  The show will go on, rain or shine.

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

Join us on the Fourth of July for a cookout in Brevard's Backyard with music by Town Mountain and Vaden Landers.
We will have a buffet with all the cookout essentials: chicken, hot dogs, veggie patties, pasta salad, corn on the cob, watermelon, and sweet treats.  You can purchase a ticket for the buffet as an add on below.

Raw, soulful, and with plenty of swagger, Town Mountain has earned raves for their hard-driving sound, their in-house songwriting and the honky-tonk edge that permeates their exhilarating live performances, whether in a packed club or at a sold-out festival. The hearty base of Town Mountain's music is the first and second generation of bluegrass spiced with country, old school rock ‘n’ roll, and boogie-woogie. It's what else goes into the mix that brings it all to life both on stage and on record and reflects the group's wide-ranging influences – from the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia and the ethereal lyrics of Robert Hunter, to the honest, vintage country of Willie, Waylon, and Merle.

The Rolling Stone says “Call it an evolution or a revolution but its clear that Town Mountain is at the forefront.” Town Mountain features guitarist and vocalist Robert Greer, mandolinist Phil Barker, fiddler Bobby Britt, and Zach Smith on bass. Town Mountain's album New Freedom Blues (October 2018) is their second consecutive album to debut in the top 10 on the Billboard Bluegrass Chart, and receive multiple mentions by Rolling Stone, No Depression, Music Mecca, and more. Full of new material and featuring several guest artists including Tyler Childers and Miles Miller (Sturgill Simpson, drummer), they prove they have staying power by regularly cranking out authentic hit albums. The impression the band has made on fans is clear through their engagement at top tier festival appearances, and those sweet Spotify streams (30+ million). And if you still can’t get enough of this hard working group, you can look forward to new music in 2022.

Vaden Landers will be opening the show.  Vaden Landers is a 28-yr-old emerging artist from East Tennessee, penning songs that evoke the golden era of country music. With a voice often compared to Hank Sr, this former train-hopper/street-busker has gained a reputation in Asheville NC as one of the city's finest performers. Billed as "The Yodeling Country Bluesman", he possesses a rare authenticity that carries on the classic tradition.

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

There is something warm and instantly familiar about the beloved roots duo, Chatham Rabbits. Partners in music and life, Chatham Rabbits’ Austin and Sarah McCombie blend their personal histories through deft songwriting and a history that comes from building a life together. Leaning into each other's strengths, their songs present a congenial, collaborative spirit that has captured the pure adoration of fans along the way and earned them praise from Garden & Gun Magazine, American Songwriter, and No Depression.

Their artistry hinges on a fervent desire to connect with others through the music that first brought the pair together. Steeped in the regional traditions of their North Carolina home, Chatham Rabbits’ musical pursuits represent a new age of roots music. Chatham Rabbits recorded and released their beloved debut album, All I Want From You in 2019. This set the standard for their sophomore release The Yoke is Easy, The Burden is Full—the centerpiece song “Oxen” was named “Top Folk Song of 2020” by Paste Magazine. Nurtured by central North Carolina’s fertile, influential music scene, Chatham Rabbits’ sound continues to evolve in their expansive third album, If You See Me Riding By (2022), which was simultaneously released with a television series, On the Road with Chatham Rabbits, on PBS-NC. The McCombies ingenuity during the Covid-19 crisis led to the creation of their mobile concert experience, The Stay at Home Tour, which took the duo to 194 neighborhoods in 2020-21. The pair is currently recording their fourth album of poignant original songs and continuing to foster their tight-knit fan community across the US.

Travis is out of town this week so he has handed the hosting microphone over to Jon Weisberger.  Jon has invited Natalys Weinstein of Zoe & Cloyd, Danielle Yother of The Wilder Flower, Graham Sharp of Steep Canyon Rangers and Nick Chandler to join him and collaborate for an evening of bluegrass.

A resident of Brevard since 2019, Jon spent more than 20 years as a touring bass player before settling in Western North Carolina. The recipient of the IBMA’s first Songwriter of the Year award, his co-writes have appeared on recent Grammy-winning bluegrass albums by Billy Strings, the Infamous Stringdusters, the Travelin’ McCourys and Mark O’Connor.  In the studio, he has worked as a producer with Aaron Burdett, Anya Hinkle, Zoe & Cloyd, Tray Wellington, Carley Arrowood, Fireside Collective and other Mountain Home and Organic Records artists.

Ed Jurdi is this week's featured guest and Tommy Maher will fill out the trio.
As a founding member and co- leader of the Austin, TX rock and roll outfit The Band of

Heathens, Ed Jurdi’s voice, songwriting and musicianship have been key elements in

defining the band’s kaleidoscopic American sound. From festival performances at

Bonnaroo, Austin, City Limits, Lollapalooza, Wakarusa, and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass to

over a thousand one nighters in clubs and theaters across the United States and Europe, Ed

Jurdi has been a fixture in the Americana world and beyond for the better part of two

    decades.

Originally from the Boston area, Ed Jurdi has forged a sound both rooted in the past and

pointing toward the future. An ardent student of the masters of American music, he brings

the passion of a gospel sermon and juxtaposes it against a gathering of merry pranksters

with a soulful delivery and timeless voice. Ed has called Asheville and the mountains of

Western North Carolina home for the better part of a decade after spending eight years in

    Austin, TX.

So when the stage is set, the lights go dark, and Ed and Gordy take the stage, grab your

drink, find your seat and settle in to witness the distilling of this rare musical brotherhood.
