The Music Department collaborates with the Theatre Department in this production of Bright Star, featuring musical echoes of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Boasting a Tony-nominated bluegrass score by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, Bright Star is a haunting tale of love and redemption set amongst a rich ensemble of characters in the North Carolina mountains in the 1940’s. Literary editor Alice Murphy sets out to discover the familial secret that binds her to a young writer just back from World War II. Her emotional, uplifting journey of discovery will forever change both of their lives.

A multi-instrumentalist (guitar, fiddle, mandolin, and banjo) he has performed with a very long list of traditional musicians, especially in Nashville, where he has lived since 1996. The International Bluegrass Music Association recognized him as best male vocalist in 1993 and 2006, and awarded him song of the year in 2006. He will be performing with his wife, Jan Fabricius, with whom he has been performing for nearly a decade. He is a Traditional Music treasure, one of the most deeply loved and respected traditional musicians of our time.
