    Comedy / PG

When radio station WHIZ-NY loses the actors of its highest rated adventure drama, The Mighty Men, to the draft in World War II, a new superhero team is created to take their place:  The Ladies of Liberty. But these new heroes aren't content to battle petty criminals and cook and clean; they want to help defeat Hitler. Sparking his career at the age of 12, Nick Carter quickly became an international pop superstar as the youngest member of the iconic boy band, Backstreet Boys. With his boyish good looks and heartthrob status, Carter's 30-year entertainment journey has extended far beyond sold-out arenas, encompassing a diverse range of projects in television, film, philanthropy, and publishing.

The Backstreet Boys hold the distinction of being the best-selling boy band in history and rank among the world's top-selling music artists of all time. The group solidified one of the largest record deals ever, signing a $60 million deal with Jive Records in 1999. Since taking the world by storm in 1995, the band has sold over 130 million records worldwide and has earned five Grammy nominations and countless Billboard Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, American Music Awards, RIAA Awards, People’s Choice Awards, and an honorary star on the iconic Hollywood Walk of Fame. To date, the Backstreet Boys have toured around the globe several times over, released ten studio albums and have broken several records, including the U.S. record for most albums sold in one year, selling over 11 million copies of their third studio album, "Millennium," in 1999.

In 2002, Carter ventured into a solo career with his debut album, "Now or Never," released under Jive Records. It debuted impressively at #17 on the Billboard 200 chart and received Gold certification in the United States, Japan, and Canada. Since then, Carter has released two additional solo albums, "I’m Taking Off" in 2012, followed by "All American" in 2016. Notably, his 2023 single "Hurts to Love You" became his most successful track, charting in seven different countries, topping the charts in the United States and charting number one in Canada.

In 2014, Carter and his now wife, Lauren Kitt, made their reality TV debut as a couple on the VH1 series "I Heart Nick Carter." Furthermore, he participated in season four of Fox's hit show, "The Masked Singer," as well as the 21st season of ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" making it to the finals on both series.

Over the years, Nick Carter has remained a household name, most recently touring with the Backstreet Boys on “The DNA World Tour” which wrapped earlier this year. Up next, he’ll embark on a solo tour, titled “Who I Am” kicking off in October 2023, which will follow the release of his new music, solidifying his enduring presence in the music and entertainment industry.

Opening Support from Maddie Poppe: Iowa native Maddie Poppe rose to stardom after winning Season 16 of American Idol. In 2018, Maddie’s debut album, "Whirlwind," hit #2 on the charts, featuring four radio singles, including two top-25s – “Made You Miss” and “Not Losing You.”

The Singletary Center for the Arts and Origins Jazz Series present Makaya McCraven

Makaya McCraven is a prolific drummer, composer, and producer who believes that the word “jazz” is “insufficient, at best, to describe the phenomenon we’re dealing with.” The artist, who has been aptly called a “cultural synthesizer,” has a unique gift for collapsing space, destroying borders and blending past, present, and future into poly-textural arrangements of post-genre, jazz-rooted 21st century folk music. Profiled in Vice, Rolling Stone, the Guardian, and NPR, among other publications, he and the music he makes today are at the very vanguard of that phenomenon. According to the New York Times, “McCraven has quietly become one of the best arguments for jazz’s vitality”.

After cutting his teeth in the Western Massachusetts music scene, co-founding a jazz-hip hop band called Cold Duck Complex that ultimately opened for The Pharcyde, Digable Planets, and the Wu-Tang Clan, he and his partner moved to Chicago in 2006. McCraven soon found himself immersed in both the creative and straight-ahead jazz scenes, proving his versatility, and along the way finding a community that mirrored the pulsating scene that birthed him artistically. Within five years’ time, he’d established a name for himself, gigging alongside scene stalwarts like Willie Pickens, Marquis Hill and Jeff Parker.

McCraven’s newest album, 2022’s In These Times, is the triumphant finale of a project 7+ years in the making. It’s a preeminent addition to his already-acclaimed and extensive discography, and it’s the album he’s been trying to make since he started making records.

In These Times, a collection of polytemporal compositions inspired as much by broader cultural struggles as McCraven’s personal experience, is the recording that McCraven has been slowly cooking in the background while his other works were released. In These Times encompasses all he’s lived through, as well as his lineage, while also pushing the music forward. Music critic Passion of the Weiss suggested that “McCraven’s work, both with younger players and the sounds of older recordings, is part of a necessary conversation about the next evolution of the Black improvised music known colloquially as ‘jazz.’ He’s found the threads connecting the past with the present and is either wrapping them with new colors and textures, or he’s plucking them gleefully like the strings of a grand instrument.”

Chamber Music Society of Central Kentucky presents the Parker Quartet
Sunday, November 5, 2023 at 3PM in the SCFA Recital Hall

Internationally recognized for their “fearless, yet probingly beautiful” (The Strad) performances, the Grammy Award-winning Parker Quartet has rapidly distinguished itself as one of the preeminent ensembles of its generation, dedicated purely to the sound and depth of their music. Inspired performances and exceptional musicianship are hallmarks of the Quartet, having appeared at the world’s most illustrious venues since its founding in 2002.

This season the Quartet marks their 20th anniversary with The Beethoven Project, a multi-faceted initiative which includes performances of the complete cycle of Beethoven’s string quartets; the commissioning of six composers to write encores inspired by Beethoven’s quartets; the creation of a new video library spotlighting each Beethoven quartet; and bringing Beethoven’s music to non-traditional venues around the Quartet’s home base of Boston, including homeless shelters and youth programs.

The year is 1930 and Ben Hecht, the famous Hollywood writer, has just finished his screenplay for a movie produced by Howard Hughes called SCARFACE, loosely based on the real-life story of Al Capone. Hecht considers the script to be the best he’s ever written. It all looks like a Hollywood ending…until the script disappears…only to turn up in the hands of two of Capone’s men who have been sent by Al to have a little “talk” with Ben.

Set in 1930s Germany, GOOD explores the creeping growth of fascism as it trickles poison into the ear and points at the 'others' and tells us 'they are the problem.' The good professor must make some choices to protect his books. To protect his life. GOOD is a fever dream that examines how self-preservation can lead to self-destruction. "If I am not for myself, then who is for me?" says Halder.  Produced by special arrangement with THE DRAMATIC PUBLISHING COMPANY of Woodstock, Illinois

Studio Players presents “A Visit from Scarface” by Virginia Cate and Duke Ernbserger. Directed by Timothy Hull.

This performance is at the Carriage House Theatre, 154 W. Bell Court, Lexington.

    Comedy / PG

The year is 1930 and Ben Hecht, the famous Hollywood writer, has just finished his screenplay for a movie produced by Howard Hughes called SCARFACE, loosely based on the real-life story of Al Capone. Hecht considers the script to be the best he’s ever written. It all looks like a Hollywood ending…until the script disappears…only to turn up in the hands of two of Capone’s men who have been sent by Al to have a little “talk” with Ben.

Professor Halder, a scholar of German literature, is a good man. People tell him so. Even as they come to him to burn his books.
