The Singletary Center Signature Series presents the University of Kentucky Women's Choir in the SCFA Concert Hall. The UK Women's Choir will be performing a world premiere of "Your World" by composer Joan Szymko with poetry by Georgia Douglas Johnson in honor of the UK School of Music 100th Anniversary season. Dr. Lori Hetzel, conductor.Joan Szymko is a composer and conductor from the Pacific Northwest. With a catalog of over 100 published choral works, her music is performed by ensembles across North America and abroad. Abundant lyricism, rhythmic integrity, and a vigorous attention to text are hallmarks of Szymko's diverse and distinctive choral writing. Fresh and inspiring, her text selections are as notable as her music. Especially significant is Szymko's contribution to the body of quality literature for women's voices. Her music is frequently heard at regional, national and international choral festivals and competitions. Since 2003, her music has been performed at every National Conference of the American Choral Directors Association. The ACDA recognized Szymko's lasting impact on the choral arts in America by selecting her as the recipient of the prestigious Raymond W. Brock Memorial Commission in 2010.The University of Kentucky Women’s Choir is a select ensemble composed of over 100 of the school’s most talented female voices conducted by Dr. Lori Hetzel, Associate Director of Choral Ensembles at the University of Kentucky. The choir’s challenging and diverse repertoire includes literature spanning from Gregorian chant to eight-part music of the 21st Century. With an emphasis on music by female composers, the ensemble performs works of many different languages and compositional forms.
Special guests: Paws & Listen. The University of Kentucky Paws and Listen are an a cappella singing group of 16 women auditioned from the Women's Choir. They perform pop music as well as a mix of doo-wop, vocal jazz, and show tunes. The ensemble is coached by undergraduate music education majors and advised by Dr. Lori Hetzel, Associate Director of Choirs/Choral Music Education. PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
University of Kentucky Opera Theatre presents "Silent Night" in the SCFA Concert Hall. The University of Kentucky Opera Theatre presents the international sensation honoring the centennial of World War I’s conclusion. Silent Night recounts a miraculous moment of peace during one of the bloodiest wars in human history. The year is 1914 and the Great War has just been declared, dividing nations and sending millions into battle. As Christmas Eve falls on a battle field near Belgium, soldiers in French, German, and Scottish trenches begin recalling songs of home, stepping into no-man’s-land for a spontaneous truce. The Pulitzer-Prize winning music underscores the yearning, despair, and hope of the soldiers living in the trenches. Once sworn enemies, they trade their weapons for merriment and camaraderie—resulting in one miraculous night of peace.
UK Opera Theatre’s production is directed by Richard Gammon. Performances will be November 9, 10, and 11, 2018, celebrating Veteran’s Day and the 100th Anniversary of the truce ending World War I, making the event especially poignant.
Reserved Seating. All seats are priced by location. Discounts for UK Faculty and Staff available exclusively through the SCFA ticket office.ALL TICKETS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE.

The Singletary Center Signature Series presents "The Saxophone Summit" featuring Jeff Coffin & Derek Brown in the SCFA Recital Hall.
The Singletary Center celebrates 30 years of saxophone at the University of Kentucky with "The Saxophone Summit" featuring dynamic innovators on the saxophone Jeff Coffin and Derek Brown alongside UK's Osland/Dailey Jazztet and UK Mega-Sax 1.Jeff Coffin is a globally recognized saxophonist, composer, educator, and is a member of the legendary and iconic American rock group, Dave Matthews Band. You may also know him from his 14 years and 3 Grammy Awards with the genre-defying Bela Fleck & the Flecktones. Jeff fronts his own groups, the Mu’tet, and the Viridian Trio when not touring with DMB and has released over 10 solo albums.
Coffin is known for his passionate and fiery soloing, his melodically driven compositions, his deep involvement with music education, and his continued dedication to the improvisational music art form some call Jazz. He is one of the top in-demand saxophonists in the world as well as a first call studio musician in Nashville, TN where he has lived since 1991. Jeff is also a Yamaha and D’Addario Performing Artists and Clinician, teaches as the prestigious Vanderbilt University, authored The Saxophone Book, co-authored The Articulate Jazz Musician, and runs his own record label, Ear Up Records. From his 30+ million views across social media to his interviews on international television and NPR’s Weekend Edition, Billboard-charting saxophonist/innovator Derek Brown and his one-of-a-kind solo “BEATBoX SAX” project has been exploding across the world music scene.
As described by jazz journalist/historian Scott Yanow, "Brown performs unaccompanied solos that occasionally make one recall Bobby McFerrin in his early prime and the great saxophonist Eddie Harris… utilizing slap-tonguing, circular breathing, a wide interest in musical styles and dazzling coordination to create rather unique music."
Previously the director of jazz studies at Abilene Christian University for six years, Derek now lives and performs in Chicago, playing in various bands and projects around the area and throughout the world. Crossing genres from jazz to classical to funk, without looping or electronic effects, saxophone innovator Derek Brown’s unique playing style must be seen to be believed!
