PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
It was a young, desperate love that inspired Frederic Chopin. Too shy to declare his feelings, he wrote: “I say to my piano what I would like to be saying to you…” Michelle Cann plays Chopin’s heart aching First Piano Concerto. “She displayed her own powerful technique in Chopin,” declared Washington Classical Review.  Tito Muñoz conducts a masterpiece by the tragically short-lived Lili Boulanger, and Sir Edward Elgar’s great and noble “Enigma Variations,” a Victorian Facebook of family and friends. Michelle Cann is the 2022/23 Florence Robertson Givens Guest Artist.

Join Richmond Symphony Director of Education & Community Engagement Walter Bitner for this deep dive into the music of our Symphony Series for the 2022-23 Season. Each class in this unique companion course will focus on the repertoire of the Symphony’s next Masterworks concert performance and feature a special guest with a critical role in the performance. Guests will include Music Director Valentina Peleggi, Associate Conductor Chia-Hsuan Lin, and many more! Through recordings, images, scholarship, biographies, backstage stories, and discussion we will listen and engage more deeply with the music and the artists who bring it to life.    


       


Each class is 60-75 Minutes long and will take place on Zoom.     


Required Technology: Computer, tablet, or smartphone with microphone/camera + internet access. A zoom link will be emailed to you 48 hours before the class.

Barry Gordy heard N’Kenge and declared her “the most versatile artist I know.”

Tchaikovsky poured his soul into symphonies that would express his anguish and passions as no music had ever dared to. Valentina Peleggi begins the new season with Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony. William Grant Still’s stirring Festive Overture opens the concert, followed by Dvorak’s opulent Te Deum with the Richmond Symphony Chorus. All this, plus a new work by the acclaimed young American Canadian composer Zachary Wadsworth.

A scorching talent that should on no account be missed…” Experience her astonishing artistry in Tchaikovsky’s blazing Violin Concerto. The Block by composer, artist and activist Carlos Simon is a musical portrait of the buildings lining one Harlem street. And the 150th birthday of the English master Ralph Vaughan Williams is marked with a performance of the turbulent Sixth Symphony of 1948, his reaction to the last World War.
