Join Richmond Symphony Director of Education & Community Engagement Walter Bitner for this deep dive into the music of our Symphony Series for the 2022-23 Season. Each class in this unique companion course will focus on the repertoire of the Symphony’s next Masterworks concert performance and feature a special guest with a critical role in the performance. Guests will include Music Director Valentina Peleggi, Associate Conductor Chia-Hsuan Lin, and many more! Through recordings, images, scholarship, biographies, backstage stories, and discussion we will listen and engage more deeply with the music and the artists who bring it to life.    

       

Each class is 60-75 Minutes long and will take place on Zoom.     

Required Technology: Computer, tablet, or smartphone with microphone/camera + internet access. A zoom link will be emailed to you 48 hours before the class.

When she took the gold at the 2021 Menuhin competition, the audience stood and roared. María Dueñas is already acclaimed as one of the leading virtuosos of her generation. See her play Lalo’s mesmerizing Symphonie espagnole. Also, Valentina Peleggi conducts a new work by young Mexican sound-shaper Juan Pablo Contreras, and Brahms’ haunting Third Symphony. Rennolds Memorial Concert

It was a young, desperate love that inspired Frederic Chopin. Too shy to declare his feelings, he wrote: “I say to my piano what I would like to be saying to you…” Michelle Cann plays Chopin’s heart aching First Piano Concerto. “She displayed her own powerful technique in Chopin,” declared Washington Classical Review.  Tito Muñoz conducts a masterpiece by the tragically short-lived Lili Boulanger, and Sir Edward Elgar’s great and noble “Enigma Variations,” a Victorian Facebook of family and friends. Michelle Cann is the 2022/23 Florence Robertson Givens Guest Artist.
