First, you will pre-mix your own natural indigo vat at home with the guidance of a pre-recorded video. Then, during the live session, you will dive into the possibilities of the patterns of shibori techniques on natural fibers to create your own beautiful, unique indigo pieces. This is the perfect technique to breathe new life into your closet or old textiles you have at home! You will also learn about vat care, upkeep, and maintenance.

How to attend this online class: This class will be taught via Zoom video call. You may download Zoom for your desktop or mobile device here. You will also need an internet connection strong enough to stream audio and video. After you register for this class, we will email you a link with details on how to join.

Supplies Needed: For this class, you will need one of Instructor Kristin Arzt’s *INSTANT* NATURAL INDIGO + SHIBORI KITS, which is already included in the price of the ticket. Each kit includes:

- All natural indigo vat ingredients in a glass jar. (You will add hot water to produce your natural vat!)
- A step-by-step guide outlining mixing your vat, best dyeing practices, and how to wash your dyed fabric.

- Two 22" X 22" cotton bandanas

Here is what is NOT included in the kit, and you will need to pick up at any hardware store:

- 5-gallon bucket with lid
- A stirring stick that is about 2.5-3 feet long. (We recommend a wooden dowel from the hardware store, but you could also a thick tree branch or very long spoon.)
- gloves

PLEASE NOTE: You will need to pre-mix your vat of indigo dye ONE DAY prior to class. You will receive instructions on this easy setup process via email once you sign up.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Punch needle is a fiber craft that dates back to the 1880’s, but is experiencing a big resurgence in popularity with more modern designs and applications. Existing somewhere between rug hooking and embroidery, punch needle involves punching a needle through fabric in a repetitive motion to create amazing designs with loops of yarn. It’s a fun, relaxing and easy craft that can be used to produce wall art, patches, pillows, rugs… just about anything made with a textile! And with a great set of tools, even first timers can complete a beautiful piece. In our online version of this class, you will start a punch needle project and follow along as the instructor guides you through the pattern. Along the way, you will learn about material selection, loading your punch tool, what yarns work best, how to work with a pattern to create your design, and various punch needle techniques. Please note that you will probably not complete the entire project during class, but you will learn specific options for how to finish your piece after! And though you’ll be following a set pattern for this class, you will learn how to design and produce your own pattern for your future punch needle projects!

For this class, you will work with our Desert Doors design pattern, featured in the photos above. Desert Doors is an easy to follow pattern based on modern geometrics and desert cactus designs. It includes an optional background, and was designed by Kelly Malone, co-founder of WorkshopSF and owner of the newly launched The Punch Needle Shop.

How to attend this online class: This class will be taught via Zoom video call. You may download Zoom for your desktop or mobile device here. You will also need an internet connection strong enough to stream audio and video. After you register for this class, we will email you a link with details on how to join.

Supplies Needed: For this class, you will need one of the WorkshopSF Punch Needle - Desert Doors Kits, which includes one Oxford Punch Needle - #8 Regular (1/2 inch loop), one 10x10 Monk’s Cloth frame, all the colorful yarn necessary for the project, the Desert Doors pattern, snips, and a sharpie. One WorkshopSF Punch Needle - Desert Doors class kit is included in the price of the first ticket option.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
In this online version of our Sashiko Mending class, you will learn about this beautiful, ancient Japanese embroidery technique which was originally developed to strengthen quilts and kimonos, and lengthen the life of textiles. Sashiko, which translates to "little stabs", traditionally uses white cotton thread on dark blue indigo-dyed fabric. A single running stitch is used to create lovely geometric patterns that can be used to decorate fabric or reinforce ripped denim. You will learn how to properly execute this running stitch, and transfer geometric designs onto indigo-dyed linen. Our instructor will guide you in the creation of your own sashiko design sampler. Once everyone has the technique down, the instructor will demonstrate how to apply this sashiko technique to your ripped jeans in order to repair and reinforce areas where the denim has torn or frayed.

How to attend this online class: This class will be taught via Zoom video call. You may download Zoom for your desktop or mobile device here. You will also need an internet connection strong enough to stream audio and video. After you register for this class, we will email you a link with details on how to join.

Supplies Needed: For this class, you will need one of the WorkshopSF Sashiko Mending Kits. One of these kits is included in the price of the first ticket option. Once your ticket is purchased, we will email you at least seven days prior to class time to confirm your shipping address and ship the kit to you promptly. Shipping normally takes 1-3 business days. IF you already own a WorkshopSF Sashiko Mending Kit, you may select the ONLINE CLASS ONLY ticket option. ALSO, for extra credit, we encourage you to have a pair of ripped jeans on hand so you can practice your new repairing skills with a teacher present!

Prerequisite: There is no prerequisite for this class. We have our online video tutorial on Sashiko Mending for you to watch and refresh yourself after the class.

Instructor Bio: Fueled by a long time desire to avoid jeans shopping at any cost, WorkshopSF sewing instructor and DIY Jack of All Trades Hayley learned the art of sashiko in order to keep her jeans in rotation for what some have called "too long". She now has become addicted to sashiko mending, and swears she owns at least one pair of jeans somewhere that lack rips or sashiko. Of course, no one has ever seen them... Check out photos of her sashiko magic on Insta at @pretzelegant_sashiko

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
In this online version of another Workshop favorite, learn the beautiful and ancient Japanese resist-dyeing technique known as Shibori.

- Various wooden shapes to create shibori patterns.

IF WE ARE SHIPPING YOU A CLASS KIT, PLEASE NOTE: Upon purchase of your class ticket, you will receive an email with a link to a Google Form. PLEASE fill out and submit this shipping form as soon as possible. Class kits will be shipped approximately 5-7 business days prior to class time, and normally take 1-3 business days to arrive. You will receive a tracking number via email once your class kit is shipped.

Instructor Bio: Kristin Arzt uses natural dyes and textile arts as a form of collage to make one-of-a-kind quilts. Among her favorite textile techniques is shibori! She has studied textiles everywhere from Oaxaca to North Carolina. She is a proud dog momma and loves to go camping whenever possible. Follow her beautiful work on Insta at @scramblesquilts.

The rules / important stuff: For our online classes, we have a strict 72-hour cancelation policy for each class, and a NO RETURNS POLICY for the class kit. BUT, the good news is, if you miss your class, you’ll still have access to a video recording of that class for up to three months.  Also, if you need to switch into an earlier / later session of your class, please just email us at least three days prior to class time and we will happily get you moved into the desired session.   All classes are still 21+ unless you email for permission.
And with a great set of tools, even first timers can walk away with a beautiful piece. In our online version of this class, you will complete a punch needle project from start to finish. Along the way, you will learn about material selection, loading your punch tool, what yarns work best, how to work with a pattern to create your design, punch needle techniques, and options for finishing your piece! And though you’ll be following a set pattern for this class, you will learn how to design and produce your own pattern for your future punch needle projects!

For this class, you will work with our Landscape Skies design pattern, featured in the photos above. Landscape Skies is a detailed pattern, but still easy to complete. Colors can easily be swapped out and adjusted to create the look you want. The pattern was designed by Kelly Malone, co-founder of WorkshopSF and owner of the newly launched The Punch Needle Shop.

How to attend this online class: This class will be taught via Zoom video call. You may download Zoom for your desktop or mobile device here. You will also need an internet connection strong enough to stream audio and video. After you register for this class, we will email you a link with details on how to join.

Supplies Needed: For this class, you will need one of the WorkshopSF Punch Needle - Landscape Skies Kits, which includes one Oxford Punch Needle - #8 Regular (1/2 inch loop), one 10x10 Monk’s Cloth frame, all the colorful yarn necessary for the project, the Landscape Skies pattern, snips, and a sharpie. One WorkshopSF Punch Needle - Landscape Skies class kit is included in the price of the first ticket option. IF you have already taken a punch needle class with us, and already possess the Oxford Punch Needle #8 Regular, then you are free to choose the second option which includes all class supplies except for the Oxford punch needle tool.

IF WE ARE SHIPPING YOU A CLASS KIT, PLEASE NOTE: Upon purchase of your class ticket, you will receive an email with a link to a Google Form. PLEASE fill out and submit this shipping form as soon as possible.
