This year, the series brings Paul Brown and Terri McMurray, Dom Flemons, and Hanneke Cassel to the Tyler Tallman Hall, and Sierra Hull to the Duke Family Performance Hall. Davidson College is thrilled to welcome back the award-winning, classically-trained, indie folk duo Barnaby Bright. Garnering high accolades for their songwriting and sound, they have been featured on television soundtracks to ER and Days of our Lives, graced such notable venues as Lincoln Center and NPR’s “Mountain Stage” in West Virginia, and shared stages with such artists as The Lumineers and Norah Jones. PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Paul Brown has combined his love of traditional music and broadcasting through most of his life. A longtime voice of “Morning Edition,” he returned to Winston-Salem several years ago to produce the highly successful traditional music broadcast and podcast, “Across the Blue Ridge.” He is a prize-winning banjo picker, fiddle player, singer, and storyteller. His wife, Terri McMurray, is a virtuoso clawhammer banjoist most noted for her membership in the Old Hollow String Band and her frequent duo performances with Paul.

Clarinetist Allan Ware was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, and studied at Davidson College, the University of North Carolina, and the Peabody Conservatory of Music. As a winner of numerous international music competitions, Ware has performed as a soloist and chamber musician for hundreds of performances on Europe’s leading chamber music series. We are delighted to welcome his expressive and virtuosic talents back to the Davidson stage!

Grammy winner Dom Flemons was one of the three co-founders of the Carolina Chocolate Drops. A multi-instrumentalist, he plays banjo, guitar, harmonica, fife, bones, bass drum, snare drum, and quills, in addition to singing. His knowledge of African-American contributions to traditional music are at the core of his entertaining and enlightening performances.

Hanneke Cassel became the U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion while still in high school. Her style fuses influences from the Isle of Skye and Cape Breton Island with Americana grooves and musical innovations, creating a wonderful blend of contemporary and traditional music that retains the integrity and spirit of the Scottish tradition. She will be appearing with her celebrated musical colleague, cellist Mike Block.

Winners of WDAV’s 2017 Young Chamber Musicians Competition, Quartet Amí, all studied at the Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University. Miki Nagahara, violin, Natalie Lee, violin, Gabriel Napoli, viola, and Geirthrudur Anna Gudmundsdottir, cello, came together in the September 2015 and worked extensively as a chamber ensemble during their time at Northwestern, coached by members of the Vermeer Quartet and the Dover Quartet.

The centerpiece of the Sloan Music Center is the 150-seat Tyler-Tallman Hall, an acoustically and visually stunning recital hall. The two-tiered venue is ideal for intimate musical performances and lectures, and is located on the upper floor and features two Steinway concert grand pianos and full audio-visual capacity to host recitals, lectures, and master classes. Tyler-Tallman Hall is on the second floor of the Sloan Music Center, located near the heart of campus, south of Chambers Building and east of the Baker-Watts Science Complex along Concord Road. Parking is conveniently located in the Baker Sports Complex or along Concord Road.
