ACTS OF VIOLENCE

November 11 – 14

The Barber Theatre

The Zoo Story

Written by Edward Albee • Directed by James Shakow ('22)

A man sits peacefully reading in the sunlight in Central Park.  There enters a second man.  He is a young, unkempt and undisciplined vagrant where the first is neat, ordered, well-to-do and conventional. The vagrant is a soul in torture and rebellion.  He longs to communicate so fiercely that he frightens and repels his listener.  He is a man drained of all hope who, in his passion for company, seeks to drain his companion.  With provocative humor and unrelenting suspense, the young savage slowly, but relentlessly, brings his victim down to his own atavistic level as he relates a story about his visit to the zoo.

The Drowning Girls

Written by Beth Graham, Daniela Vlaskalic and Charlie Tomlinson • Directed by Caroline Gschwind ('22)

Bessie, Alice and Margaret have two things in common: they were all married to George Joseph Smith and they are dead. Surfacing from the bathtubs they were drowned in, the three breathless brides gather evidence against their womanizing, murderous husband by reliving the shocking events leading up to their deaths.

Reflecting on the misconceptions of love, married life and the not-so-happily ever after, The Drowning Girls is both a breathtaking fantasia and a social critique, full of rich images, a myriad of characters, and lyrical language. The Drowning Girls premiered at Alberta Theatre Projects’ 2008 PlayRites festival in Alberta, Canada.

April 7-10 - The Duke Family Performance Hall

Music and Lyrics by Andrew Lippa

Book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elise

Directed by Ann Marie Costa

Vocal Direction by Jacqueline Culpepper

Music Direction by William Lawing

THE ADDAMS FAMILY, a comical feast that embraces the wackiness in every family, features an original story and it’s every father’s nightmare: Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family– a man her parents have never met. And if that wasn’t upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before– keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents.

A third-generation jazz musician, whose mother and grandfather were also acclaimed jazz singers, she sang full-time with the Count Basie Orchestra for a decade, and she continues to sing and record with the Basie Orchestra today. When Johannes Brahms was overseeing the premiere of his Ein Deutsches Requiem, or “A German Requiem,” he would remark to the conductor that he would rather “German” be omitted and that the piece be called a work “for Mankind.” The masterwork, atypical of most settings of the Requiem, has since come to be understood and beloved as a message of comfort and healing to those left behind by the departed. We are proud to present this masterpiece, alongside a newly commissioned work responding to Brahms, with the combined choral forces of Davidson College as our own fervent wish for healing and renewal in our wounded world.
