    About Marquis Hill

One of the finest trumpeters in jazz today, Marquis Hill is also a composer and bandleader whose comprehensive vision highlights the unity and continuity within the musical heritage of AfricanAmericans. On acclaimed albums like his latest, Modern Flows Vol. II, and his 2016 breakout project, The Way We Play, Hill and his working band, the Blacktet, use their next-level musicianship and deeply interactive dynamic to break down the barriers separating bop, hip-hop, R&B and electronic music. Born in Chicago in 1987 and raised on the city’s South Side, Hill absorbed the jazz tradition both formally—he holds a bachelor’s in music education as well as a master’s in jazz pedagogy—and informally, gaining knowledge from his elders on gigs and at jam sessions. By the time he won the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz competition in the fall of 2014, his reputation for fluid virtuosity was firmly established in the Midwest—as a member of the Chicago Jazz Orchestra, an in-demand sideman and a leader with several buzz worthy self-released discs to his credit. Since that watershed victory, Hill has garnered glowing coverage in outlets like the New Yorker, the New York Times, JazzTimes, NPR Music and DownBeat, where he topped the “Rising Star– Trumpet” category in the 2016 Critics Poll. As he’s maintained a nonstop touring schedule with the Blacktet, he’s also supported and guested with a jazz who’s who that includes Marcus Miller, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Boney James, Kurt Elling, Joe Lovano and Hill’s trailblazing Chicago peer Makaya McCraven.

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
This Tuesday night Open Mic Night at Missy Lane's debuts with Eloquent Soul hosted by Dasan Ahanu with a live band directed by Joe Holloway.

Eloquent Soul Open Mic is open to poets and vocalists. Performances are 7:30 PM- 9:30 PM.

Sign-ups start at 7:15PM First come – first served. PLEASE WRITE CLEARLY. Come on time to assure a slot.

The open mic list often gets very full very fast. Therefore we ask that people ONLY sign the open mic list for themselves.

The order in which you sign up is not necessarily the order of performance nor will it guarantee you get stage time. Both are at the discretion of the host & venue management. If we run out of time before we get to you, then you will be added to the top of the list for the next week.

Performers get 5 minutes on stage. You can perform one song or up to two poems. PLEASE RESPECT THE TIME LIMIT. If there is time available after everyone who has signed up has gone, then we will invite performers back on stage a second time.

Eloquent Soul includes a house band. We ENCOURAGE you to use the band in your performance. Please let the band leader know what song or groove you would like for them to play.

When you are next – please be ready to take the stage when you are called. If you’re not available to take the stage when you are introduced you will be bumped to the end of the list.

BE CONSIDERATE OF THE OTHER PERFORMERS. Please be quiet and

show respect for the performers on stage.

At Missy Lane’s we do not censor our artists. All language will be allowed at the show, provided that it is used responsibly. We reserve the right to limit or prohibit speech deemed problematic (hate speech, graphically violent, etc.) for our community.

The most important guideline is to be supportive and have fun! Remember that we are here to share art and community.

    About Malcolm Jamal Warner

Malcolm-Jamal Warner has become known in the entertainment business for his seasoned acting talents, and his accomplishments in music, directing, and producing. As an Emmy-nominated actor and Grammy award winner, Warner has positioned himself as one of the most accomplished talents in the industry today. As a staple in television and film for nearly 30 years, Warner first rose to national prominence by starring on the celebrated and long-running classic television series “The Cosby Show.” His work on the show garnered him a Primetime Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and set the stage for him to have a long career in the public eye.

Warner was most recently seen co-starring as A.C. Cowlings opposite Cuba Gooding Jr. on the critically acclaimed FX series “American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson.” He is currently recurring on TNT’s hit series “Major Crimes,” as well as “Suits” on USA and has appeared on “American Horror Story: Freak Show” and “Sons of Anarchy” for FX. Additional television credits include recurring on NBC’s critically acclaimed series.

Warner made his feature film debut in Paramount Pictures’ DROP ZONE, and was also seen in Warner Bros’ Pictures FOOLS GOLD opposite Matthew McConaughey, Kate Hudson, and Donald Sutherland. He also co-starred in the independent films RESTAURANT with Adrien Brody, A FARE TO REMEMBER, and THE LIST with Wayne Brady. He recently starred in the short film WANNABE, which was a runaway hit at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival.

Warner’s voice may be as well-known as his likeness, for four seasons he was heard as the voice of the

    About Orrin Evans
During his kaleidoscopic quarter-century as a professional jazz musician, pianist Orrin Evans has become the model of a fiercely independent artist  who pushes the envelope in all directions. Never supported by a major label, Evans has ascended to top-of-the-pyramid stature on his instrument, as affirmed by his #1-ranking as “Rising Star Pianist” in the 2018  DownBeat Critics Poll. Grammy nominations for the Smoke Sessions albums The Intangible Between and Presence, by Evans’ raucous, risk-friendly Captain Black Big Band, stamp his bona fides as a bandleader and composer. In addition to CBBB, Evans’ multifarious leader and collaborative projects include the Eubanks Evans Experience (a duo with eminent guitarist Kevin Eubanks); the Brazilian unit Terreno Comum; Evans’ working trio with bassist Luques Curtis and drummer Mark Whitfield, Jr.; and Tar Baby (a collective trio of 20 years standing with bassist Eric Revis and drummer Nasheet Waits). One of Tar Baby’s two 2022 releases will be released on Evans’ imprint, Imani Records, which he founded in 2001 and relaunched in 2018.
