This Tuesday night Open Mic Night at Missy Lane's debuts with Eloquent Soul hosted by Dasan Ahanu with a live band directed by Joe Holloway.

Eloquent Soul Open Mic is open to poets and vocalists. Performances are 7:30 PM- 9:30 PM.

Sign-ups start at 7:15PM First come – first served. PLEASE WRITE CLEARLY. Come on time to assure a slot.

The open mic list often gets very full very fast. Therefore we ask that people ONLY sign the open mic list for themselves.

The order in which you sign up is not necessarily the order of performance nor will it guarantee you get stage time. Both are at the discretion of the host & venue management. If we run out of time before we get to you, then you will be added to the top of the list for the next week.

Performers get 5 minutes on stage. You can perform one song or up to two poems. PLEASE RESPECT THE TIME LIMIT. If there is time available after everyone who has signed up has gone, then we will invite performers back on stage a second time.

Eloquent Soul includes a house band. We ENCOURAGE you to use the band in your performance. Please let the band leader know what song or groove you would like for them to play.

When you are next – please be ready to take the stage when you are called. If you’re not available to take the stage when you are introduced you will be bumped to the end of the list.

BE CONSIDERATE OF THE OTHER PERFORMERS. Please be quiet and

show respect for the performers on stage.

At Missy Lane’s we do not censor our artists. All language will be allowed at the show, provided that it is used responsibly. We reserve the right to limit or prohibit speech deemed problematic (hate speech, graphically violent, etc.) for our community.

The most important guideline is to be supportive and have fun! Remember that we are here to share art and community.

    About Malcolm Jamal Warner

Malcolm-Jamal Warner has become known in the entertainment business for his seasoned acting talents, and his accomplishments in music, directing, and producing. As an Emmy-nominated actor and Grammy award winner, Warner has positioned himself as one of the most accomplished talents in the industry today. As a staple in television and film for nearly 30 years, Warner first rose to national prominence by starring on the celebrated and long-running classic television series “The Cosby Show.” His work on the show garnered him a Primetime Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and set the stage for him to have a long career in the public eye.

Warner was most recently seen co-starring as A.C. Cowlings opposite Cuba Gooding Jr. on the critically acclaimed FX series “American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson.” He is currently recurring on TNT’s hit series “Major Crimes,” as well as “Suits” on USA and has appeared on “American Horror Story: Freak Show” and “Sons of Anarchy” for FX. Additional television credits include recurring on NBC’s critically acclaimed series.

Warner made his feature film debut in Paramount Pictures’ DROP ZONE, and was also seen in Warner Bros’ Pictures FOOLS GOLD opposite Matthew McConaughey, Kate Hudson, and Donald Sutherland. He also co-starred in the independent films RESTAURANT with Adrien Brody, A FARE TO REMEMBER, and THE LIST with Wayne Brady. He recently starred in the short film WANNABE, which was a runaway hit at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival.

Warner’s voice may be as well-known as his likeness, for four seasons he was heard as the voice of the

“Producer” on PBS’ “The Magic School Bus.” Currently, he can be heard on the audio book version of “The Marvelous Effect” published by Berkley Trade, as well as in Simon & Schuster’s “Fatherhood” by Bill Cosby. When not acting and directing, Warner is a poet and a bass player. In 2015 Warner nabbed his first Grammy Award for “Best Traditional R&B Performance as a Featured Performer” on Robert Glasper's version of the Stevie Wonder classic "Jesus Children of America".  Lalah Hathaway was also featured on the track.

All of Warner’s independently distributed CD’s, “The Miles Long Mix Tape,” “Love and Other Social Issues,” and “Selfless” have become popular on the underground music scene, can now be purchased on iTunes and http://www.MalcolmJamalWarner.com.

    About Orrin Evans
During his kaleidoscopic quarter-century as a professional jazz musician, pianist Orrin Evans has become the model of a fiercely independent artist  who pushes the envelope in all directions. Never supported by a major label, Evans has ascended to top-of-the-pyramid stature on his instrument, as affirmed by his #1-ranking as “Rising Star Pianist” in the 2018  DownBeat Critics Poll. Grammy nominations for the Smoke Sessions albums The Intangible Between and Presence, by Evans’ raucous, risk-friendly Captain Black Big Band, stamp his bona fides as a bandleader and composer. In addition to CBBB, Evans’ multifarious leader and collaborative projects include the Eubanks Evans Experience (a duo with eminent guitarist Kevin Eubanks); the Brazilian unit Terreno Comum; Evans’ working trio with bassist Luques Curtis and drummer Mark Whitfield, Jr.; and Tar Baby (a collective trio of 20 years standing with bassist Eric Revis and drummer Nasheet Waits). One of Tar Baby’s two 2022 releases will be released on Evans’ imprint, Imani Records, which he founded in 2001 and relaunched in 2018.

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Kassa Overall is a Grammy-nominated musician, emcee, singer, producer and drummer who melds avant-garde experimentation with hip-hop production techniques to tilt the nexus of jazz and rap in unmapped directions. On his first two stadio albums GO GET ICE CREAM AND LISTEN TO JAZZ and I THINK I'M GOOD, Kassa layered virtuosic drumming, meticulous production techniques, and incisive lyricism to establish himself as a rhythmic innovator and visionary poet, using his voice to address the injustices of the carceral system, the pharmaceutical industry, and anti-black racism, while wrangling with the perils of his own mental illness. On ANIMALS, his Warp Records debut out May 26, Kassa pushes his kaleidoscopic, subversive vision further. He layers Roland 808s against avant-garde drumming in the vein of his mentors Elvin Jones and Billy Hart, the latter of whom he studied with at the Oberlin conservatory of Music. Virtuoso musos appear alongside rap poets, including Danny Bown, Wiki, Lil B, and Shabazz Palaces.

Conceived by Ethio-American saxophonist D.A. Mekonnen–– co-founder/leader of the widely celebrated Debo Band– the solo project dragonchild is a culmination of decades of musical experimentation, embodied spiritual practice, and critical thinking. Danny Mekonnen is a Boston-based musician and the founder of the widely celebrated Debo Band, whose self-titled debut was included on NPR’s 50 Favorite Albums of 2012. Growing up in Texas as a first generation Ethiopian-American, Mekonnen often heard traditional Ethiopian instruments and vocals, later seeking out master Ethiopian musicians to learn to play the traditional instruments of his heritage. The groundbreaking Debo Band combines those influences with American Jazz, Soul and Funk and the instrumentation of Eastern European brass bands.

Sunken Cages is the moniker of Indian-born drummer/electronic music producer Ravish Momin, originally an acoustic drummer/percussionist, who has worked with a wide array of musicians, from pop-star Shakira to legendary Jazz musician Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre (of the AACM) in addition to leading his own innovative global groups Tarana and Turning Jewels Into Water (with Haitian electronic music pioneer Val Jeanty) on international stages for the past 15 years.

Together, they create an exciting new global music that draws from their respective cultural backgrounds as well as contemporary electronic dance music.

Sunken Cages plays electronic and acoustic drums, triggers melodies/textures and generates loops in real-time, while dragonchild shifts between saxophones and cymbals/gongs.
