    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
This Tuesday night Open Mic Night at Missy Lane's debuts with Eloquent Soul hosted by Dasan Ahanu with a live band directed by Joe Holloway.

Eloquent Soul Open Mic is open to poets and vocalists. Performances are 7:30 PM- 9:30 PM.

Sign-ups start at 7:15PM First come – first served. PLEASE WRITE CLEARLY. Come on time to assure a slot.

The open mic list often gets very full very fast. Therefore we ask that people ONLY sign the open mic list for themselves.

The order in which you sign up is not necessarily the order of performance nor will it guarantee you get stage time. Both are at the discretion of the host & venue management. If we run out of time before we get to you, then you will be added to the top of the list for the next week.

Performers get 5 minutes on stage. You can perform one song or up to two poems. PLEASE RESPECT THE TIME LIMIT. If there is time available after everyone who has signed up has gone, then we will invite performers back on stage a second time.

Eloquent Soul includes a house band. We ENCOURAGE you to use the band in your performance. Please let the band leader know what song or groove you would like for them to play.

When you are next – please be ready to take the stage when you are called. If you’re not available to take the stage when you are introduced you will be bumped to the end of the list.

BE CONSIDERATE OF THE OTHER PERFORMERS. Please be quiet and

show respect for the performers on stage.

At Missy Lane’s we do not censor our artists. All language will be allowed at the show, provided that it is used responsibly. We reserve the right to limit or prohibit speech deemed problematic (hate speech, graphically violent, etc.) for our community.

The most important guideline is to be supportive and have fun! Remember that we are here to share art and community.

    About Keyon Harrold

When Keyon Harrold is listing the influences that he turned to during the creation of his rich and evocative new album Foreverland (January 2024 / Concord), he cites the likes of Radiohead, Fleet Foxes, Fela Kuti, John Coltrane, and, for a second, he becomes vulnerable — the list is too basic, too serious music listener starter pack.

Taking in Keyon Harrold’s career to-date, it’s clear that the “world-class trumpeter” (Essence) and composer is very serious about that diet. He’s a jazz musician but in the most expansive sense, working with a list of dream collaborators: generational legends Keith Richards and Diana Ross; rap stars like Mac Miller and Nas; neo-soul icons Erykah Badu and D’Angelo; and modern soul stars Black Pumas and Leon Bridges. His circle of regular collaborators is formidable and includes his music industry mentor Common (who hired him for his first touring gig), his New School classmate Robert Glasper, and GRAMMY winners Maxwell, PJ Morton, Gregory Porter, and YEBBA.

There’s also his extensive touring and recording work with pop music royalty, Jay-Z and Beyonce. And, while it’s perhaps lazy to compare Keyon to Miles Davis, the connection is a little more apropos than at first glance: Harrold contributed all of the trumpet playing in Don Cheadle’s GRAMMY-winning Miles Davis biopic Miles Ahead, playing to match Cheadle’s on-screen performances.

Keyon has recorded two acclaimed solo records, 2009’s Introducing Keyon Harrold and 2017’s breakthrough release The Mugician, which established Keyon as “a certified legend in the game” (Okayplayer). Featuring Pharoahe Monch, Gary Clark, Jr., Big K.R.I.T., Guy Torry, Georgia Anne Muldrow and Robert Glasper, the record garnered praise from The New York Times (“stirring…consolidates elegy and exhortation”) and Billboard (“equal parts music and magic”). However, the origins of Foreverland begin not at the crest of a professional and artistic high but in the doldrums of COVID-19 lockdown. A pandemic birthday found Keyon adrift.

Artistically poised pianist Kayla Waters is a chart-topping recording artist, composer, producer and film-scorer. After signing a new record deal with Shanachie Records, Kayla victoriously releases her brand new musical offering Presence, a life-giving creative work alluding to the beauty of the ocean and God's abundant love. Beautifully composed and eloquently written, Presence is a stunning addition to her repertoire following albums Coevolve and Apogee. As a five time Billboard and Mediabase number one artist {I Am, Zephyr, Full Bloom, Open Portals and Undulation}, Kayla made history by becoming the first female pianist to reign atop the charts for six consecutive weeks.

Recently, Kayla’s musical achievements have been extolled on prestigious platforms, as she was honored with the Rising Star in Jazz Award {Black Women in Jazz and the Arts Foundation of Atlanta} and the Best Jazz Artist Award {The Wammies & The Musicianship} in Washington, DC where she is based. The spotlight has humbly created opportunities for Kayla to play and perform with music legends and prominent recording artists including Stevie Wonder, Patrice Rushen, Avery*Sunshine, Maysa Leak, Sheila E., and Dave Koz to name a few. Passionately alluring, Kayla gracefully flourishes on stage, having played exhilarating and exuberant concerts at intimate venues, illustrious theaters and acclaimed festivals worldwide. ABOUT

Each generation has that one voice that will always be synonymous with its sound…Susan Carol possesses that voice. This Fort Worth, TX native was created to sing. She is one of four children who all inherited their musical gifts from their parents; writing, singing and playing instruments is in her blood.

Susan’s vocal range changed dramatically from her youth through high school. “When I was growing up, I was a very high soprano…it was really crisp and clear” she says. Susan aspired to have a deeper voice like Norah Jones. As she matured, her voice transitioned into a sultry alto tone with a subtle rasp and crushed-velvet like texture. Susan’s lyrics and style mirror some of the greatest voices of past generations. She encapsulates the sincerity of Billie Holiday with the tonal depth of Jazmine Sullivan and the tangible vocal prowess of Gladys Knight. Susan’s voice delivers an audible experience like none other.

Fresh out of college, Susan relocated to Houston and was drawn to its music scene. Her debut project, Alchemy, in 2016 was a reflection of the young woman she was becoming while navigating her atmosphere. Singles like About Nothing, Kick It and Every Night highlights her journey while learning to flourish personally and musically while maturing and maneuvering through her new world. After Alchemy’s successful release, she took a break from releasing music to focus on her individual growth. This time afforded Susan the space to dive deeply into self and tap into her true authenticity.

In 2019, she reemerged and over the next four years delivered an even more confident set of singles, EP’s and collaborations that amassed her growth personally, vocally and instrumentally. A genuine set of songs that allowed you to peer into what her soul loved and appreciated were the results of her three-year hiatus.
