    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

Launched in August of 2020, Tuesday Casual Collaborations at 185 King Street has become a cornerstone of the vibrant Brevard music community. Every week Travis Book assembles a unique group of musicians for a one-time-only show, drawing on his vast network of friends and growing repertoire of musical styles. From Bluegrass to Blues, Songwriter to Americana, Country to Funk, Travis and his ever-evolving cast of local and national (even international) musicians consistently hit the sweet spot between preparation and spontaneity. “Eventually, I hope to play with everyone!” he occasionally boasts, and he’s well on his way. Travis has hosted a wide range of musicians, including: Anders Beck, Nicki Bluhm, Josh Daniel, Beppe Gambetta, Mike Guggino, Vince Herman, Sierra Hull, Cris Jacobs, Jim Lauderdale, Lindsay Lou, Steve McMurry, Mimi Naja, Tim O’Brien, Woody Platt, Jon Stickley, Kyle Tuttle, and Cristina Vane. He also regularly employs the skills of world-class local musicians like Jeff Sipe, Mike Ashworth, Tommy Maher, Bennett Sullivan, and Derick Gardner. Every week is unique, the musical styles wide-ranging, but the one thing that remains constant is the intention, positivity, and charisma that Travis brings to each and every show.

Local legend Woody Platt returns to T-Book Tuesday's with his former bandmate Mike Guggino on mandolin along with Casey Driessen on fiddle and Bennett Sullivan on banjo.

This week's featured guest is Tray Wellington.
Growing up in western North Carolina’s Ashe County, Trajan “Tray” Wellington heard a lot of music — and from the first time he heard the banjo as a young teen, he was, he says, “hooked.” Even before he graduated from East Tennessee State University’s renowned Bluegrass, Old-Time and Country program, Wellington had earned acclaim as the banjo player with Cane Mill Road, performing across the country and winning a 2019 International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Momentum Instrumentalist of the Year award while the group took Momentum Band of the Year honors. A well-received, independently released 2020 EP under his own name, the creation of his Tray Wellington Band and signing with Mountain Home Music Company that same year marked Wellington’s decision to make his own path going forward. As he began releasing singles in advance of his full-length debut, Black Banjo, Wellington continued to garner attention, leading banjo workshops at the prestigious Merlefest and Gray Fox festivals; performing on the IBMA’s 2020 World of Bluegrass Main Stage and acting as host for the Momentum Awards ceremony; gaining coverage in publications like No Depression, The Bluegrass Situation and Folk Alley; and appearing on David Holt’s PBS NC series, being interviewed by Rhiannon Giddens for a BBC documentary series and by W. Kamau Bell for his CNN series, United Shades of America.  Read more...

She tours across the US, Japan and Europe and has recorded eight studio albums in various collaborations including Dehlia Low (Rebel Records) and Tellico (Organic Records). The album is slated for release in early 2024 on Red Parlor Records.

The Billy Sea. The comfort of Appalachian roots music blends seamlessly with the spark of global cadence, shining a light on the world influences of three master musicians. Founded by slide guitar revolutionary Billy Cardine, the sound is firmly planted in American roots music, but also pulls influence from all corners of the world.  His memorable compositions and unique instrumental voice has been featured on The History Channel's "Our Generation,” BBC World's "Destination Music,” PBS' "RoadTrip Nation,” and on stages across the globe including Carnegie Hall and The Kennedy Center.  River Guerguerian commands a wide range of musical styles on his unique blend of percussion instruments, combining elements.  He has performed internationally for 25 years with such groups as the BBC Concert Orchestra, Grammy- and Oscar-winning composer Tan Dun, Omar Faruk Tekbilek, Tibetan Singing Bowl Ensemble, Talujon Percussion Quartet, Chuck Berry, and Ziggy Marley/Gipsy Kings project.  Jake Wolf adds his intricate mix of musical elements as a powerful melodic voice and a driving rhythmic force on the 6 string bass.

Mary Lucey is a talented vocalist, multi-instrumentalist on banjo and bass, songwriter and performer. She has appeared with The Biscuit Burners, Uncle Earl, and Lovers Leap and has played venues such as The Kennedy Center, Ryman Auditorium and festivals such as Bonnaroo, Merlefest and Rockygrass

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

The Get Right Band is a psychedelic indie rock power trio committed to relentlessly following their muses to honest self-expression, to whatever excites them and pushes them into unexplored territory, to capturing some version of truth. American Songwriter writes that the Asheville, NC based group, “filters 60’s/70’s psychedelia and 90’s alternative rock through a modern lens–as if Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Nirvana co-wrote an album produced by Danger Mouse and Dan Auerbach.”

The Get Right Band formed in 2011, built around the musical brotherhood that guitarist/singer/songwriter Silas Durocher and bassist Jesse Gentry have formed playing music together since middle school (25 years!). Durocher, who is a trained composer and has been commissioned to write for symphonies and chamber groups, has guitar chops that can soothe or rage, with a charismatic swagger as frontman and singer. Gentry’s virtuosic bass playing “catapults from elastic to nasty” (The Mountain Xpress). Over the years, GRB has defined their sound through constant evolution, building to the hook-driven, synth-heavy pop/rock/psych band they are today. The Huffington Post writes, “their songs are infectious and take you immediately to a place. The lyrics are smart and bear weight.”

Take a 15-time IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) Dobro Player of the Year and a Tennessee-born guitar prodigy who made his Grand Ole Opry debut at the age of 11, and you have Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley, a powerhouse acoustic duo that has electrified the acoustic music scene.

Known for their white-hot picking, stone country vocals with soul and world class live musicianship, Ickes and Hensley meld together blues, bluegrass, country, rock and other string band music of all kinds to form a signature blend of music that defies restrictions of genre.  They are equally at home on stages of prestigious performing arts centers, theatres and the Grand Ole Opry as they are on Americana, jamgrass, bluegrass and jam band festivals.

Ickes co-founded the highly influential bluegrass group Blue Highway and has been a sought-after Nashville session player and live performing musician for decades, with credits to his name such as Vince Gill, Earl Scruggs, Merle Haggard, Alan Jackson, Reba McEntire and Alison Krauss.  Hensley has been called “Nashville’s hottest young player” by Acoustic Guitar magazine and his soulful baritone vocals have received acclaim as well. Influenced by repertoires as diverse as The Allman Brothers Band, Ray Charles, Merle Haggard and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Hensley has shared stages with artists such as Johnny Cash, Steve Wariner, and Peter Frampton. As a duo, Ickes and Hensley have shared the stage and collaborated with Tommy Emmanuel, Taj Mahal, David Grisman, and Jorma Kaukonen & Hot Tuna — all enthusiastic admirers of the duo — as well as Luther Dickinson of North Mississippi All Stars, Molly Tuttle, and many more.  The duo were key players on “Original,” the recent highly lauded Compass album by bluegrass giant Bobby Osborne; their participation garnered a Recorded Event Of The Year Award for Bobby’s version of “Got To Get A Message To You” on that album at this year’s IBMA Awards; they also were on the 2016 Recorded Event winner, ”Fireball,” featuring Special Consensus, in 2016.

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

With a voice that summons the guttural howls of John Fogerty, and guitar work that ranges from the front porch to outer space, Ross Osteen joins the powerful blues/rock scene of the deep south. The songwriter was born in western North Carolina placed in the midst of an eclectic music scene ranging from bluegrass to rock, and beyond. Eventually all of his influences aligned to form his bluesy sound, and he hit  the road. Ross has played blues shows with notables such as Jimmy Thackery, and Kim Wilson of the Fabulous Thunderbirds. He also shared the stage with legend Buddy Guy. There’s no doubt his style of musical soul searching will allure listeners.

Let’s not forget the driving pulse of the band, Patrick Gaynor. Growing up in New York, he was constantly pulled in by the hypnotic southern sound of the Allman Brothers. A sound which lures listeners in on songs like “Fools Gold” off of their album titled “Glenhead Station”. Patrick eventually moved south to find a band that could satisfy his blues cravings.

The Ross Osteen Band is fully anchored by the distinct force of Andy Bishop on bass. Andy is a multi-instrumentalist and owner/operator of Giraffe Studio for many years. He is the perfect complement to this power trio, and his contribution really heightens the music.

Since the Ross Osteen Band started in 2014, they have played a number of shows from Georgia to New York to Chicago, with a very memorable appearance with Buddy Guy on one of their songs titled “Hold Back”. All the while, growing a local fan base in western North Carolina. They released their self titled album in 2015, followed by their second release “Glenhead Station” in 2016. The band just released their latest single “Mannish Boy” from the upcoming album “Williwaw”. Ross Osteen Band continues to hone their sound into an energetic blend of blues, roots, and southern rock.

This week Travis will be joined by his bandmate, Andy Falco and they will be playing the music of Jerry Garcia.  Andy Falco and Travis Book are both members of the Grammy award winning bluegrass band The Infamous Stringdusters.  Inspired by their love of the music of Jerry Garcia, the duo branches off on their own for occasional tours to celebrate Garcia’s timeless
songs.  “The project actually originated back stage at ‘Dusters shows where Travis and I would typically warm up with some fun Jerry songs” Falco explains. “At some point we just thought it would be fun to do it in public” They draw from Garcia’s solo material, his Grateful Dead catalogue as well as the Traditional songs Jerry loved to play.  “Performing this music as a duo allows us to explore the songs and jam in a way that’s unique to playing as a Duo” Says Book. “We typically hear these songs in larger ensembles, but the songs done with just bass and guitar somehow make the music very interactive with the audience. It’s really a testament to the quality of the songwriting, and we like to put a spotlight on that aspect of Jerry.”

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

Highly regarded, as one of Bluegrass music’s most recognizable and finest high lead and tenor vocalist, Larry Stephenson has been headlining festivals and concerts for 30 years. He formed The Larry Stephenson Band in 1989 while living in his home state of Virginia.

Larry’s crystal-clear tenor voice has provided a musical home for some of the finest sidemen in contemporary bluegrass history. Many appearances on the Grand Ole Opry and RFD-TV has made The Larry Stephenson Band a fan favorite all across the US and Canada.

Born in Harrisonburg, VA and raised in King George, VA, Larry’s Dad put a mandolin in his hand at the age of 5 and by the age of 11, Larry cut his first record. Graduating high school in 1976, Larry and his Dad had a very popular regional band for 3 years, performing at festivals, concerts and regulars at The Wheeling Jamboree in Wheeling, WV. From there, he worked with Cliff Waldron, Leon Morris while soaking up the Washington, DC rich musical scene. In 1979, Larry went to work with Bill Harrell and The Virginians for 4 ½ years and then in June of 1983 went to work with The Bluegrass Cardinals and stayed for 5-½ year. That band configuration is often referred to as one of the “classic lineups of the Bluegrass Cardinals”. Larry also credits the rich music scene of Virginia and Washington, DC for much of his musical success, having seen and heard the first generation bluegrass performers in person and on radio.

While Larry Stephenson is best know as a touring musician whose voice sets a standard of melody, clarity and storytelling, he has had an active and well-awarded recording career. Starting his recording career for Webco Records of Virginia and then 18 years with Pinecastle Records, releasing 18 albums during that period. Signature songs in Larry Stephenson’s vast catalog in that period include “Patches”, “Yes, I See God”, “Clinch Mountain Mystery”, “Many Hills Of Time”, “The Knoxville Girl”, “The Knoxville Boy”, “The Pretty Blue Dress”, “ I Should’ve Called” and “The Violet And The Rose”.

Throughout his 30 years of fronting his own band, and over 40 years as a major touring performer, Larry Stephenson has been well-recognized and awarded by fans and his peers in the bluegrass industry. With a move to Nashville, TN in 1992, the band became fast regulars on the Grand Ole Opry. In 1996, the Virginia Folk Music Association inducted Stephenson into The Virginia Country Music Hall of Fame. Since that time, he has garnered numerous IBMA and SPBGMA nominations and awards. In 2018, The Society for The Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America (SPBGMA) inducted Larry in their Hall of Greats.
