    Larry McCray

Blues Rock Review - #1 Album of 2022

“Blues Without You…. one of the strongest blues guitar albums released for many years. Indeed, it is hard to imagine that there will be a better blues record released in 2022. McCray presents the same kind of two-fisted combo that made giants like B.B. and Freddie King such formidable artists, with not only the ability to play blisteringly effective solos but also a voice that can rival the best blues singers from any bygone age”– Guitar Player

Larry McCray first emerged on the international stage with his debut release on Point Blank/Virgin in 1990. Through the 1990’s and behind 4 albums on that label, he quickly ascended the hierarchy of the blues and roots world, not just as a guitarist who could slay but also as an impassioned singer who could knock out audiences with his soulful, barrel-chested vocals.

Over the past three decades of nonstop touring and recording, Larry has played and shared the stage with such blues and rock greats as BB KingBuddy GuyAlbert KingJohn Mayall, Johnny WinterRobert CrayKeb MoJonny LangJoe WalshLevon HelmKenny Wayne ShepherdBobby “Blue” Bland, Albert Collins, and Joe Bonamassa. No stranger to the deep and endless world of the jam band universe either, Larry is beloved by and has performed with many of the greats in that world, including touring with The Allman Brothers BandWarren HaynesGov’t Mule, Phil LeshChris Robinson of the Black Crowes, and countless others.

Now, with the release of his new album Blues Without You (March 25, 2022), Larry McCray is poised to re-emerge as one our great American roots and blues performers. The new album is a masterful, genre busting 12-track release that touches on country, jazz, gospel…and of course the blues. Recorded on famed guitarist Bonamassa’s Keeping the Blues Alive label with producer Josh Smith, the breadth of McCray’s songwriting talents are on full display, found on tracks such as the classic blues shuffle Arkansas, the retro soul of Breaking News and the poignant ballad Down To The Bottom (featuring Warren Haynes).

This feature-length documentary takes a deep look into the crisis of anxiety and mental health in America, especially its impact on kids (ages 10-26) and families. We zero in on how anxiety shows up, the nurture/nature debate, what's happening in homes and society that's significantly adding to the problem, the crisis on college campuses, and the impact of anxiety and mental health in lower socioeconomic communities, especially the brown and black communities. We discuss stigma, loneliness, isolation, disconnection, the alarming rise in suicide, the dangers of social media, overmedication, incorrect diagnoses, and the horrific mental health ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Stephen Marley is an award-winning singer, songwriter and producer. From his solo works to family collaborations and production credits, Stephen Marley’s music has earned him eight Grammy Awards. He is the second eldest son of reggae legend Bob Marley and Rita Marley, raised in Kingston, Jamaica. Stephen started singing professionally at 7 years old with his elder siblings Ziggy, Sharon and Cedella in The Melody Makers.

Stephen has garnered recognition as a solo artist for his Grammy-winning albumsMind Control (dubbed “the best Marley album in a generation” by Entertainment Weekly),Mind Control AcousticandRevelation Part I: The Root of Life, while also receiving multiple Grammys as as a producer-most notably for Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley’s massive cross-over hit Welcome To Jamrock. The second installment of Stephen Marley’s Revelation album series, Revelation Part II: The Fruit of Life, was released in 2016 on the Marley family’s Ghetto Youths International label. Whereas The Root of Life offered a traditional roots reggae album, The Fruit of Life emphasized the far-reaching impact Jamaican music has had on various genres –especially hip hop. Album guests included Rick Ross, Pit Bull, DJ Khaled, Busta Rhymes, Wyclef Jean,Shaggy and more. In 2018, Stephen Marley released a five-track EP, One Take: Acoustic Jams, which showcased raw, deconstructed versions of his and his father’s original songs. He took that stripped-down set on the road, performing for thousands during three North American tours, before the pandemic hit in 2020.

Summer 2022 marks the triumphant return of Stephen’s North American “Babylon By Bus” Tour which includes a cavalcade of hand-picked support artists appearing at various venues across the country, including a sold-out tour kickoff at Red Rocks Amphitheater with Ziggy Marley and Ben Harper. Additional dates will include Skip Marley, Kabaka Pyramid, Hirie and Mike Love with more to be announced.

In recent years, Stephen Marley established his own Kaya Fest as an annual music festival that debuted in 2017, featuring rare family performances by The Marley Brothers and the Marley’s 3rd Generation of talented offspring, alongside notable reggae and hip-hop legends such as Wycelf Jean, Pit Bull, Busta Rhymes -instilling an experiential component to raise awareness on the benefits of cannabis guided by the mantra “Education Before Recreation.” Plans to continue this festival tradition is currently in the works for 2023.

Stephen continues to champion charitable endeavors centered in Jamaica as a co-founder of Ghetto Youths Foundation, along with his brothers Damian and Julian Marley. With a prolific work ethic in his Lion Den Studios, Stephen just released an EP collection of songs he produced with female vocalists as an homage to legend Nina Simone, Celebrating Nina: A Reggae Tribute to Nina Simone, and is currently putting the finishing touches on his own new album projects, with the first solo LP slated to release in fall of 2022.

Two strange late silent thrillers, both starring Chaney at the peak of his career and directed by Todd Browning, who would later helm the cult film ‘Freaks’ (1932). In ‘The Unknown’ (1927), Chaney plays ‘Alonzo the Armless,’ a circus knife-thrower (he uses his feet!) with a dark past who lusts after trapeze artist Joan Crawford, who is pursued by the circus strong man, but she has a phobia about being held by a man. See where this is going? In ‘West of Zanzibar’ (1928), Chaney plays a vaudeville magician who loses use of his legs in an accident but still journeys to Africa to seek revenge on the wealthy businessman (Lionel Barrymore) who stole his beloved.

    NATALIE MacMASTER & DONNELL LEAHY

    DOORS: 6:00PM     SHOW: 7:30     AGES: 13+

Hearing Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy speak reverentially about the fiddle, which has propelled their dazzling careers since childhood while cementing their status as Canada’s reigning couple of Celtic music, is almost as electrifying as hearing them play it.

Indeed, when MacMaster and Leahy married in 2002 — both were already stars in their own right — they could not have predicted their merger would recast what contemporary musical success looks like. Or that they would produce a large family and ensure their mantelpiece was jammed with JUNO and East Coast Music Awards while creating an inventory of achievements spanning the globe.

They certainly couldn’t have imagined capping off what they jokingly refer to as their combined 83 years as performers with milestones including another hotly anticipated Christmas tour, an accompanying TV special, a pending third installment of their Greenbridge Celtic Folk Fest, a recent Road Gold Award from the Canadian Independent Music Association, and last but certainly not least, the arrival of Maria, newest sib to Mary Frances, Michael, Clare, Julia, Alec and Sadie.

“I’m continually amazed by what the fiddle has brought to my life,” MacMaster offers. “It has carried me through my childhood, through my teens, my young adult life, my married life and now motherhood. And I still love it as much as ever. Same with Donnell. It’s unexpected and awesome.”

Natalie returned to the studio in 2019 to record a solo LP which was co-produced by Donnell and featured the performances of Tim Edey. Natalie’s describes the artist direction of the project “I have something to say through my fiddle. It’ll be a moment of joyous appreciation inspired by years of parenting, marriage, life, friendships, and music. It is a moment during my 47th year of life, my 37th year of fiddling, my 16th year of marriage, my 13th year of parenting. I have chosen one of my very favourite musicians to join me, Tim Edey, an absolute Jen of a player and person.”

David Cook (and yes, the same David Cook who launched into stardom following his American Idol Season Seven win – breaking several Billboard chart records when 14 of his songs debuted on the Hot Digital Songs chart and 11 of his songs debuted on the Hot 100) certainly knows his way around a good song. His first album, Analog Heart, came out pre-Idol, and his last album, Digital Vein, nicely book-ended that chapter of Cook's career, a chapter during which he sold more than 2 million albums (including his platinum-certified eponymous album) and, collectively, more than 5 million tracks (including two platinum-certified singles) worldwide.

Cook is well aware, and grateful, for the breaks American Idol has brought his way, and for the opportunities he continues to have. He has no plans to slow it down. "I love creative endeavors. I like starting with nothing and then finishing with something that didn't exist before. That's my favorite thing about creating new music. I love being able to put something artistic out in the world for people to enjoy."

In 2020, David released two new singles. The first, Reds Turn Blue, is a nod to the manic highs (reds) and lows (blues) of anxiety, something David has struggled to overcome since his season seven win on American Idol. As David told People.com: "This song became a therapeutic process for me, as a way to personify my anxiety and make it something other than me — which, in an odd way, has helped me navigate my relationship with it." To capture that struggle, David worked with artist Justin A. Nixon to create a visual that was, "sci-fi and sinister" but left open-ended to represent "that constant battle between anxiety and myself."  And the second, Strange World, is "my homage to this year," said David. "Staring out of windows at the world outside, feeling disconnected from it, and trying to find those moments that would normally exist outside, inside. "Both singles, along with the driving Fire are from his  EP The Looking Glass, released in April 2021.

In April 2022, David released his latest single, "TABOS" (This'll All Be Over Soon). The single's release coincided with his return to the American Idol® stage to perform for their special 20th-anniversary reunion show.

Slippery When Wet – The Ultimate Bon Jovi Tribute was formed in 2003 by Jason Morey after answering many inquiries of “Are you Jon Bon Jovi?”. Most notably comedian Dave Chappelle invited Jason backstage following one of his comedy shows thinking that he was the New Jersey icon. It was then that Jason knew he had to take advantage of the resemblance.

It’s a good thing that Jason grew up on some of the best classic rock albums such as “Slippery When Wet” and “New Jersey”. Not to mention that he was also playing a few Bon Jovi songs in his widely successful tribute to the halcyon days of metal “The White Leppard Crue”.

Slippery When Wet – The Ultimate Bon Jovi Tribute has taken exact live arrangements from Bon Jovi’s 2000’s Crush tour , 2002’s Bounce tour , 2005’s Have a Nice Day tour, 2008’s Lost Highway tour and 2010’s The Circle tour to form what Jason refers to as an “Arena- Club Show”. With further explanation Jason thinks that “Slippery When Wet has the power to turn a 800-2000 capacity club into a 20,000 seat arena for 2 1/2 hours”.

Bon Jovi’s career spans 35+ years and over 130 million albums sold worldwide. Another milestone that the band has achieved is that they have tracked 14 Billboard top ten singles of which 8 of those went straight to number 1. In 2018 Bon Jovi was inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. Slippery When Wet believes that Bon Jovi has the right kind of song catalog that really lends itself to being performed live as well as fitting into a broad age range that makes for the perfect club demographic.

Slippery When Wet has played over 1800 shows throughout the U.S. alone and has traveled to Africa, Mexico, Singapore, Puerto Rico, Honduras and the Dominican Republic. They have headlined on over 60 cruises on the Royal Caribbean cruise line and played the pre game of Super Bowl 48 in East Rutherford NJ.The bands shows are the most attended and highest grossing of any Bon Jovi Tribute in the country.

Slippery When Wet is the most searched Bon Jovi tribute band on Google as well it has the most views of any Bon Jovi tribute band on Youtube. In 2007 the band was officially authorized by Bon Jovi to perform their highly entertaining show.

In 2018 Jason Morey was chosen to perform as their only impersonator to Jon Bon Jovi in the Legends in Concert show in Las Vegas.

In 2019 Slippery When Wet was handpicked to perform on both Runaway to Paradise Cruises with Jon Bon Jovi

In 2021 Slippery When Wet was a Finalist after competing on Jimmy Fallon’s Clash of the Cover Bands on E!.

Their drive , musical ability , showmanship and dedication to duplicating the Bon Jovi live experience simply cannot be outdone.

    Adin Stickle — Guitar

Al Di Meola, a bonafide living Guitar Legend inducted into the Gallery of Greats is among the top guitarists of our time. His ongoing fascination with complex rhythmic syncopation combined with provocative lyrical melodies and sophisticated harmony has been at the heart of his music throughout a celebrated career that has spanned four decades and earned him critical accolades, four gold albums, two platinum albums, more than six million in record sales worldwide, five German gold albums, and various awards including an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Berklee College of Music, the Honorary Miles Davis Award presented by the Montreal Jazz Festival, a BBC Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Sir George Martin in 2008, Hungarian Foundation for Performing Arts Lyra Award, and numerous Grammy nominations and awards. Al is the recipient of the most prestigious guitar awards ever given, a total of 12 awards from Guitar Player Magazine polls and as a result, was inducted into their Gallery of Greats.

Not only a guitar hero, but a prolific composer, he has amassed over 30 albums as a leader while collaborating on a dozen or so others with the likes of the fusion supergroup Return to Forever(with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Lenny White), the celebrated acoustic Guitar Trio featuring fellow virtuosos John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia, and the Rite of Strings trio with bassist Clarke and violinist Jean-Luc Ponty. And while his dazzling technique on both acoustic and electric guitars has afforded him regal status among the hordes of fretboard fanatics who regularly flock to his concerts, the depth of Di Meola’s writing along with the soulfulness and the inherent lyricism of his guitaristic expression have won him legions of fans worldwide beyond the guitar aficionado set.

A pioneer of blending world music and jazz, going back to early Latin-tinged fusion outings like1976’s Land of the Midnight Sun, 1977’s Elegant Gypsy and 1978’s Casino, the guitar great continues to explore the rich influence of flamenco, tango, Middle Eastern, Brazilian and African music with his World Sinfonia, an ambitious pan-global group that he formed in 1991. Their exhilarating world music fusion has been documented on such releases as 2000’s The Grande Passion (featuring the Toronto Symphony Orchestra), 2007’s Live in London, 2011’s Pursuit of Radical Rhapsody and the stunning 2012 DVD, Morocco Fantasia (recorded at the Mawazine Festival in Rabat, Morocco and featuring special guests Said Chraibi on oud, Abdellah Meri onviolin and Tari Ben Ali on percussion).

Growing up in Bergenfield, NJ with the music of The Ventures and The Beatles, Di Meola naturally gravitated to guitar as a youngster and by his early teens was already anaccomplished player. Attaining such impressive skills at such a young age didn’t come easy for Al, but rather was the result of focused dedication and intensive periods of woodsheddingbetween his junior and senior years in high school. “I used to practice the guitar all night after school and once in college, 6 – 8 hours per day” he told Down Beat. “And I was trying to find myself, or find the kind of music that suited where I was going with the guitar.”

Eric Gales is a blues firebrand. Over 30 years and 18 albums, his passion for the music and his boundless desire to keep it vital has never waned, even when his own light dimmed due to his substance struggles. Throughout it all, he continued to reinvigorate the art form with personal revelation in his lyrics and bold stylistic twists in his guitar playing and songwriting.

Five years sober, creatively rejuvenated, and sagely insightful, Eric is ready for the fight of his career. Aptly, he calls his masterful new album, out January 2022 on Provogue/Mascot label Group, Crown. Here, Eric opens like never before, sharing his struggles with substance abuse, his hopes about a new era of sobriety and unbridled creativity, and his personal reflections on racism. The songs are delivered with clarity and feature Eric's personal experiences and hope for positive change. In addition, the 16-track collection boasts his finest singing, songwriting, and his signature guitar playing that burns throughout. Produced by Joe Bonamassa and Josh Smith, this is Eric at his most boldly vulnerable, uncompromisingly political, and unflinchingly confident.

“There was always a brotherhood with us. When we reconnected, Joe said to me, ‘You’re a badass guitarist; it’s your turn to get your seat at the table to wear your crown’,” Eric recalls. Shortly after their iconic face-melting jam, Eric approached Joe to produce him. Eric reveals: “We cried when we talked about it, he said ‘you have no idea how long I waited for you, now I am going to do my part to lift you where you’re supposed to be.’” Crown finds Eric stepping up to receive his due.

An undisputed expert in the fine art of making hit music, Jim Messina’s legacy of musical genius spans five decades, three super groups, a vibrant solo career and scores of producing and engineering credits.

While acting as producer/audio engineer for Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Buffalo Springfield, Messina ultimately joined the band as its bass player. When “the Springfield” disbanded in 1968, Jim and fellow bandmate Richie Furay formed Poco. With Jim on lead guitar, Poco defined a new musical genre, Country Rock.

After three successful albums, Jim was ready for a change and left to return to his passion for producing music. He signed as an independent producer with Columbia Records.

In November 1970, Columbia asked Jim to work with an unknown Kenny Loggins. While helping Kenny get ready for a record and touring, the two discovered that they worked well together and Jim agreed to sit in on Kenny’s first album. Kenny Loggins with Jim Messina Sittin’ In was released in November of 1971 and an accidental duo was formed.

Over the next seven years, Loggins & Messina released eight hit albums, had scores of hit songs and sold over 16 million albums. They had become one of rock’s most successful recording duos ever, but it was time for the duo to go their separate ways.

After a series of celebrated solo acoustic tours, Jim formed a band made of acclaimed musicians who have played with him at various points in his career. His latest release, In the Groove, includes selected hits from all three of Jim’s previous bands, as well as several of his solo works.

Touring the country and playing sold-out shows, Jim says that he’s enjoying discovering who he is, where he’s been and, most significantly, where he’s going.
