w/ Hannah Glavor & Rain EzraAmy Evans

Amy sings to you from her hometown of Portland, Oregon, combining her classical vocal training with her gospel music roots in her low, smooth sound. Drawing her influence from artists like Norah Jones, Jazmine Sullivan, and Adele, Amy writes from her personal heartbreaks and those around her, always contemplating what it means to stay gracious (and keep your humor) in a grey, rainy world.

Her current project, an EP entitled Babybird. is releasing August 2022, and laughs you through a story of getting hurt, getting angry, and getting strong while staying soft. It's a soulful funk fusion album that falls somewhere between Adele and Lizzo, sometimes dancey and sometimes sugar sweet, with influences from Lake Street Drive, Yebba, and a little bit of church.

Hannah GlavorHannah Glavor is a Portland based singer-songwriter with a cinematic range of indie rock revelry and raw folk spirit, clutched together by catching pop elements. She has been on the West Coast scene for the past decade sharing the stage and touring with a broad range of sound like Liz Vice, Joseph, and Y La Bamba. With “So Far, So Long” (2020) Hannah beckons a new chapter of sound in her partnership with the analog masters at Mason Jar Music in Brooklyn, New York (Feist, Fleet Foxes, Andrew Bird). Her evocative lyricism, intimate vocal delivery, and enthralling arrangements conjure a compelling and eclectic blend of comparisons from Faye Webster to Fleet Foxes to Feist to Metric. Her songs and mantra have not ceased to strive to give language to hope; having weathered losses, difficult transitions, and surviving brain surgery in 2017. Her cry for peace and hope, even in the worst of life's storms, is an invitation for all to fight to see and love others around them.

It's hard to believe that 20 years have passed since Interpol's Turn On The Bright Lights turned on a new generation to the more melancholic spectrum of late 70s and early 80s post punk and shoegaze, launching a tidal wave of indie rock bands mining the sounds of an earlier era.

Featuring members of Portland bands Neuma & Soft Cheese, New York Kids is bringing a heartfelt, pitch-perfect, note-for-note tribute to the seminal album and band.

Portland's favorite Beach House tribute, Victoria, are opening this must-see event for fans of music of the sounds coming from both coasts in the early 21st century.

w/ Austin Leonard Jones Like many of his favorite songwriters (John Hartford, Lucinda Williams, Jeff Tweedy), Izaak Opatz is an ungulate in life’s winter pasture, chewing on and metabolizing disappointment, heartbreak, and the other tough stuff into enjoyable musical carbohydrates. A compulsive metaphorager (and inveterate wordplayboy), Opatz breaks it all down with enzymes of wry humor, thoughtful simile and close observation - a therapeutic process of narrativizing his own life that, almost as a byproduct, turns out savory nuggets of literate, confessional pop.Where 2018’s Mariachi Static drew from Opatz’s fragmented love life as a seasonal Park Service employee and resonated especially with the sensitive dirtbag set, Extra Medium, his latest release, splits time between romantic Hindenburgs across his native Montana, up the East Coast, and in faraway Los Angeles. Montana and LA especially decorate the album, supplying wells of metaphor and scene-making, and as characters in their own right - LA’s alternately charming (“In the Light of a Love Affair”) and discomfiting (“East of Barstow”), and, in “Big Sandy”, Montana evolves from setting to subject as the girl’s feelings he traverses it to see prove less than his own feelings for the state. In LA, Opatz learned from and worked alongside Jonny Fritz at Dad Country Leather, and met bandmates and Extra Medium collaborators Malachi DeLorenzo (drums, producer, engineer) and Dylan Rodrigue (multi-instrumentalist, producer). He now lives in Missoula, Montana, where he runs his own custom leather shop, is writing the next album, and getting ready to pursue a Journalism degree at the U of M.THIS EVENT IS 21+ AND GENERAL ADMISSION. w/ Hey, King! & Little Monk Panda ScoutTomo Nakayama"When music journalists say things like 'this artist is a fixture in Seattle music,' there’s probably no one right now who fits that title better than Nakayama." - KEXPBorn in Japan and raised in Seattle, Washington, Tomo Nakayama is an  artist whose melodic, complex and emotionally compelling music has been  praised by NPR, New York Times, and The Stranger. After two critically acclaimed indie-folk albums “Fog on the Lens” and “Pieces of Sky” (named "Best Folk Act" by Seattle Weekly), he surprised his fans by releasing the synthpop album  "Melonday" (on Seattle label Porchlight Records). Co-produced by Yuuki Matthews (The Shins, Teardrops, Sufjan Stevens) and mastered by Dave Cooley (M83, Paramore, Tame Impala), “Melonday” was named one of the Top Albums of 2020 by Seattle Times, KEXP, and Seattle Met Magazine, and debuted at #1 on the NW Charts.  He has toured across the US and Japan, sharing the stage with Cornelius, Wye Oak, Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, Ben Gibbard, Damien Jurado, and Shugo Tokumaru. He has collaborated with Dave Matthews, Sera Cahoone, Jherek Bischoff, and Jeremy Enigk (Sunny Day Real Estate). An active, longtime member of the Seattle music and arts community, Tomo has also curated and produced events for Forterra (Ampersand Live) and Town Hall, where he also served as Artist in Residence. He also composed music and appeared as an actor in the Lynn Shelton film “Touchy Feely” with Elliot Page and Rosemarie DeWitt. Hey, King! When you first hear indie rock act Hey, King! it immediately becomes clear that each musical moment is rendered with precision, care, and a whole lot of heart. These are powerful and humanity affirming songs from songwriter, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Natalie London and her partner, vocalist and percussionist Taylor Plecity. A formidable and boisterous live force that often results in an eight piece orchestral band, they've previously toured extensively with Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals. Their debut songs, which are being released this summer via ANTI-, show their love for each other and their craft is tangible. They evoke the exuberance of Arcade Fire, the freewheeling simplicity of Tom Petty, and the wit-filled resonance of Fiona Apple. Little Monk Panda ScoutLittle Monk Panda Scout is the joy-focused, super-secret side project of No-No Boy songwriter Julian Saporiti and his partner Emilia Halvorsen. Unable to tour behind their critically acclaimed 2021 Smithsonian Folkways album, the duo passed the pandemic in their Portland, OR studio apartment writing harmony-laden love songs on acoustic guitars, tabletop synthesizers, and pocket-sized drum machines. A catalog of endearing electro-pop folk songs emerged from their quarantine experience, music celebrating love, fun, and the natural world. Little Monk Panda Scout mostly performs in forests and parks around the PNW but occasionally, the duo ventures into the city to share their music with human audiences.

Southern California alt/rock artist Private Island inspires with their whimsical flair to songwriting, lyrical ingenuity inspired by ‘in-jokes’ and tales of good and bad times with friends. Organically forming in the summer of 2013, they united to form an alt/rock realm of tunes with current front-man Christian Lum, Tommy Nickerson, and Cameron Anderson.  Their forthcoming Valleyheart EP gives a sense of that playful spirit; reverberating with boisterous percussion, energetic guitar riffs and hazy vocals that listeners have come to adore. Showcasing the band's true vision and identity, the release covers a wide spectrum of emotions and experimentation, with the end sound evolving into something unexpected. Speaking on the EP, they reveal, “The first sounds you hear on the EP are pretty ethereal.” With tracks that lend themselves to a selection of scenarios, they continue, “I think there’s a couple that are hypey tunes for on the way to a party, and other tunes for leaving the party.” Valleyheart was entirely self-written, produced and engineered in band member Lum’s home studio in Sherman Oaks. Their focus track “Natural” was originally written in 2017 during a trip to Big Bear, CA with producer Bob Curtin, with the band sharing, “Unlike many others, the demo stood the test of time and made it to the writing room for the new EP, Valleyheart. We initially struggled to write the lyrics, so to remedy that, we brought on our Ex-Tour Manager/Buddy, Andrew Sedo as a co-writer. After many renditions, the song was ultimately written about dead weight and the relief felt once shed." Furthering their euphonious energy with lyrical bliss, Private Island didn’t just stop there. Their latest EP offers seven tunes of authentic and rather unapologetic alt/rock. Displaying their unique creative narrative with “Your Call”, a tune about the unavoidable helplessness of losing a job, and “Trippin”, describing the rather hilarious tale of a carefree roommate, Private Island’s diverse and quite unique musical capability creates contagious chemistry like no other.

w/ Braly Sangster CASEY NEILLwww.caseyneill.comCasey Neill is a songwriter from Portland, Oregon performing high energy indie folk, infused with haunting melodies and weather beaten narratives. Neill performs as a solo act as well as with his band, The Norway Rats. He tours throughout the USA, Japan, and Europe, performing at venues such as Town Hall in New York, San Francisco's Great American Music Hall, and the Newport Folk Festival. The new Casey Neill & The Norway Rats album 'Subterrene' is a major leap forward that No Depression calls "a milestone in Neill and company’s trajectory thus far" while Rolling Stone says "(Neill's) songs mask their complexities beneath a simple, singalong-worthy surface... these swimming waters have serious depth." Casey is a frequent member of power pop band The Minus 5 along with Scott McCaughey and Peter Buck of R.E.M. (who both guest on 'Subterrene').Critic Marco Rivera described it best for music blog Splendid: “Be it through raucous rockers, fragile acoustic ballads, passionate bursts of punk fury or soulful touches of Irish folk, Neill's narrative talent and concern for real people's struggles stand out. (Neill) evokes an epic feel that fits perfectly with the implicit grandiosity of this emotional material, delivered with a raspy, affectionate voice that recalls Life's Rich Pageant-era Michael Stipe. The results are so evocative, you'll be tempted to steep further in these memories, the better to share Casey Neill's particular blend of personal and historical experience.”Braly SangsterIn the greatest duos, the dynamic between individuals generates a sound all its own. Voices and visions co-mingle completely, alchemising into a union that transcends “complementary” or “contrasting.” While musician, producer and engineer Johnny Sangster, and musician/ songwriter Leslie Braly are both established artists in their own right, the music they make as Braly Sangster owes everything to their chemistry. The twelve songs of Permanent Wave touch on many styles (“Tease It Out” evokes ’80’s college radio faves like the Replacements’ “Kiss Me On the Bus;” and “I Belong With You” reminiscent of the Everly Brothers’ “Let It Be Me”) yet Braly Sangster always sound - and feel - simpatico throughout this set of original duets. —Kurt B. Reighley Permanent Wave is the first full length recording from Braly Sangster; a collaboration between Seattle Musicians Johnny Sangster (Neko Case, Mudhoney, Tripwires) and Leslie Braly (Pineola.) Playful, reflective lyrics; layered harmonies; articulate guitar.

Jake Blount A powerfully gifted musician and a scholar of Black American music, Jake Blount speaks ardently about the African roots of the banjo and the subtle, yet profound ways African Americans have shaped and defined the amorphous categories of roots music and Americana. His 2020 album Spider Tales (named one of the year’s best albums by NPR and The New Yorker, earned a perfect 5-star review from The Guardian) highlighted the Black and Indigenous histories of popular American folk tunes, as well as revived songs unjustly forgotten in the whitewashing of the canon. Jake Blount’s new album, The New Faith, is a towering achievement of dystopian Afrofuturism and his first album for Smithsonian Folkways (coming September 23, 2022). The New Faith is spiritual music, filled with hope for salvation and righteous anger in equal measure. The album manifests our worst fears on the shores of an island in Maine, where Blount enacts an imagined religious ceremony performed by Black refugees after the collapse of global civilization due to catastrophic climate change. Jake Blount’s music is rooted in care and confrontation. On stage, each song he and his band play is chosen for a reason - because it highlights important elements about the stories we tell ourselves of our shared history and our endlessly complicated present moment. The more we learn about where we’ve been, the better equipped we are to face the future. No-No BoyJulian Saporiti is a Vietnamese and Italian American songwriter and scholar. His multi-media work “No-No Boy” has transformed his Ivy League PhD research on Asian American history into concerts, albums and films which have reached a broad and diverse public audience. His latest album 1975 released through Smithsonian Folkways has been hailed by NPR as “an act of revisionist subversion” and American Songwriter called it “insanely listenable and gorgeous.” By using art to dive into highly divisive issues such as race, refugees and immigration, Saporiti aims to allow audience members to sit with complication as music and visuals open doorways to difficult histories. Saporiti holds degrees from Berklee College of Music, University of Wyoming and Brown University and has worked with cultural institutions such as Lincoln Center, the LA Philharmonic, the National Parks and Carnegie Hall. "one of the most insurgent pieces of music you'll ever hear... re-examines americana with devastating effect..." - NPR"Amazing storytelling in the finest folk tradition." - San Francisco Chronicle

Black Opry is a home for Black artists and Black fans of country, blues, folk, and Americana music. Country music has been made by and loved by Black people since it’s conception. For just as long, we have been overlooked and disregarded in the genre by fans and executives. Black Opry wants to change that. We invite you to discover, support and enjoy Black artists with us. One of the most valuable aspects of country music is its versatility and diversity in sound. Country, blues, folk, and Americana music often overlap or weave together- our artists explore all of those sounds and intersections. Offered in two formats, writers rounds and festival sets, the Black Opry Revue showcases the diversity in sound and stories that Black artists offer to these genres.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
The first releases from Filthy Friends, the scorchingly melodic rock group whose membership consists of some of the most original musical voices of the past three decades, came as a small, delightful shock to the system. Not only because of the names associated with the project, including Sleater-Kinney co-founder Corin Tucker, R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck and indie stalwarts Scott McCaughey and Kurt Bloch, but also because of how ably they were able to mesh their individual sounds into a crackling melodic whole on debut album Invitation. Now, with their follow-up—Emerald Valley, out on Kill Rock Stars on May 3rd—the Friends have proven their collective mettle, crafting a thematic suite of songs that finds the quintet digging deeper into their bag of musical tricks and giving Tucker room to rage about and mourn the fate of our planet and the people who inhabit it.The core idea came from a demo Buck shared with Tucker for a grinding blues song that eventually turned into this new album’s title track. The minute she heard it, Tucker says, it sparked something within her: “I had this long poem growing in my brain,” she says. “It turned into a sort of manifesto about the kind of place we are at as a country but also as a region. Just taking stock of where we’re at and feeling like I can’t believe we let things get this bad.”While Emerald Valley s tarts off with idyllic imagery (“Rolling fields, they speak your name/vibrant green is here again”), the album and its title track slowly reveal the ugly underneath, with human arrogance and hubris hurting the Earth and the people who take on “backbreaking work for little pay.”From there, the Friends address growing concerns over oil production and distribution (“Pipeline”), gentrification and income inequality within the band’s hometown of Portland, Oregon (“One Flew East”), and taking on the voice of the desperate souls that are getting crushed under the wheels of capitalism (“Last Chance County”). The band paints these themes with many different shades of the rock palette, nestling a snapping punk tune between a bit of jangly pop and an almost-shoegaze ballad, with stops along the way for songs that burn as hot and move as slow as lava and tunes that stay steady and fast as a rocket launch.Emerald Valley is also a testament the indefatigable spirit of the Filthy Friends themselves. Scott McCaughey bounced back from a stroke he suffered in late 2017, which curtailed the band’s tour plans and is playing with more fire than ever. As well, Corin Tucker and Peter Buck were able to devise some amazing work even as their creative energies were being pulled toward other projects like Arthur Buck and Sleater-Kinney. Too, the band was able to bring a new member into the fold with drummer Linda Pitmon coming on board to replace Bill Rieflin without losing an ounce of their power. We could all take a lesson from Filthy Friends. As proven by Emerald Valley, when a group of like-minded people gather their individual strengths together and point them toward a singular goal, there’s no telling how powerful they can become and what an impact they can make on the world at large.
