The Gold Souls

The Gold Souls are bringing the driving grooves of funk, the rich textures of soul, and the compelling storytelling of the blues to the Northern California scene and beyond. Drawing from a variety of influences and experiences, they deliver captivating lyrics and fresh arrangements over a vintage sound. The Gold Souls have rocked audiences in Austin, Houston, San Antonio, New Orleans, Santa Fe, Tucson, Los Angeles, San Diego, and more; and have shared stages with the likes of The California Honey Drops, The Soul Rebels, Five Alarm Funk, Matador! Soul Sounds, The Nth Power, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, North Mississippi All Stars, Soul Scratch, Nikki Hill, and Aubrey Logan. Their music has previously been featured on Apple Music Blues' Hot Tracks, Pandora's Adult R&B playlist, Fox 40, Good Day Sacramento (CBS), Great Day San Antonio (CBS), New Orleans WWL (ABC), Capital Public Radio (NPR), The Women's International Music Network, Submerge Magazine, and more.

Love, Dean

Musicians, singer-songwriters, and husband and wife, Rachael and Luke Price, are bringing back the feel-good vibes of classic Americana. On Love, DEAN’s self-titled debut, they’ve handcrafted a musical mosaic from vintage soul, Motown, old-time music, gospel, folk, and neo-soul. The self-titled album is themed around love and community, and coming of age milestones. It’s vibrant, personal, and it’s for everyone.

“This album is a love letter from us to anyone who listens. We're hoping the listener feels let into our lives; that they can see value in music; value in people; and that they feel inspired to grow in their own lives and relationships. We leave space for grief, hardship and honesty but our target is encouragement and positivity in the midst of struggles,” Rachael says.

Love, DEAN is the result of an arduous 6-year journey of sleepless nights, delayed studio dates, re-recording sessions, and pilgrimages around the country. Each hardship and road block brought the duo closer to its dream destination. Love, DEAN was tracked in studios in Portland, Brooklyn, and Los Angeles. The 11-song album was co-produced by Luke Price and Dave Kitay, features an intriguing lineup of all-star musicians including Sebastian Steinberg on bass (John Legend, Blake Mills, Fiona Apple, Sean and Sara Watkins), Brian MacLeod on drums (Sheryl Crow), Daniel Clarke (Natalie Prass, KD Lang) on keys, Margaret Glaspy on backing vocals, and Vishal Nayak on drums (Nick Hakim, Empress Of).

Vonnie Kyle

Vonnie Kyle is a singer-songwriter based in Portland, Oregon. Her music has been described as “A masterful blend of indie rock and folk-tinged storytelling.” Kyle’s songs are upbeat and poignant, exuding a 90s pop-rock sensibility. In the studio and on stage, Kyle is an energetic and fearless performer. In 2022, having already released four different EPs since 2013, Kyle released Imperfect Parts, her first full-length album. Its traditional rock band lineup is complemented by lush strings, punchy horns, and intricate vocal harmonies. Thematically, Imperfect Parts explores existential loneliness, longing, and loss, but it’s ultimately a story of self-acceptance.

The Gwythaints

When you’re a sheltered prairie kid, nothing is cooler than your best friend’s biker dad’s pagan girlfriend reading aloud to you from epic fantasy books based on Welsh mythology over extended camping trips under the stars on the rocky shores of Puget Sound. That’s where Adam Sweeney first heard about the Gwythaints—fearsome birds that served as the all-seeing eyes of the dark lord in Lloyd Alexander’s Chronicles of Prydain. When he found his band emerging from the ashes of the pandemic with a new record and a cinematic alt rock sound, the name just fit.

Leading into 2020 Sweeney’s old band The Breaking had been at the height of its powers. They were sharing stages with bands like Rubblebucket, The Sherlocks, Avi Buffalo, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Floater, Lemolo and The Stone Foxes. They had just made a record with a production team of Grammy award winners and nominees—including producer Patrick Tetrault (Laura Gibson, The Features) mix engineer Craig Alvin (Kacey Musgraves, Kathleen Edwards) and mastering engineer Pete Lyman (Weezer, Brandi Carlile)—that launched them into new sonic territory. But then Covid-19 happened, tours were canceled and their record never saw the light of day.

That band has evolved. They are now Gwythaints! Wall-of-guitar alt-rock power meets cinematic pop production lyrically charged with poetic angst.

Ghost Feet

After releasing their debut record, Together Alone (Dropping Gems, 2015), Ghost Feet decided to shelve the project to focus on their respective solo projects.

The duo later reconvened at a Portland studio during the pandemic to build on a sound The FADER once called “...the audio equivalent of dappled sunlight, winking and blinking through the shade”. During those initial studio sessions of live instrumentation, Ghost Feet added lead vocalist Jess Branch, who records and produces as Erina. The trio leapt into the creative unknown by embracing the experimental sonic textures of 4AD Records over programmed electronics. They have since added bass player Ryan Scott and drummer Benjamin Tyler to their lineup.

Ghost Feet is Nuri Erdal, Rachel Dubuc, Jess Branch, Ryan Scott, and Benjamin Tyler, and is based in Portland, Oregon by way of Olympia, Washington. They have released a series of EPs and the full-length Together Alone on Dropping Gems. Their music has been featured in VICE, Impose Magazine, The FADER, Earmilk, XLR8R, and other music publications.

Though much has been made of AHI’s years spent backpacking everywhere from the hills of Ethiopia to the jungles of Trinidad, Prospect, the globetrotting singer/songwriter’s extraordinary new album, is the story of an even more profound journey: an internal quest for understanding and self-discovery. Recorded in Nashville with GRAMMY-winning producer Paul Mabury, the collection is bold and expansive, delivering on the promise of AHI’s first two records with a captivating, immersive sound that showcases the raw power of his gravel-on-silk vocals like never before. The songs here are deeply introspective, looking inward with piercing insight and honesty, and the performances are similarly fearless, blurring the lines between roots, folk, pop, and soul as they grapple with pain and healing, faith and resilience, connection and identity.

Born in Ontario, AHI (pronounced “eye”) grew up in a traditional West Indian family that considered music diversionary entertainment, but after dropping out of school to hike, meditate, and fast his way across the world, he set his mind to pursuing songwriting professionally. His debut album, We Made It Through The Wreckage, was a breakout hit, with lead single “Ol’ Sweet Day” racking up more than 15M streams and earning AHI an NPR Tiny Desk Concert. The attention helped score a deal with Thirty Tigers for his next LP, 2018’s In Our Time, which garnered a JUNO nomination and led to dates with Patty Griffin, Michael Franti, and Lauren Daigle.

Jake Blount

A powerfully gifted musician and a scholar of Black American music, Jake Blount speaks ardently about the African roots of the banjo and the subtle, yet profound ways African Americans have shaped and defined the amorphous categories of roots music and Americana. His 2020 album Spider Tales (named one of the year’s best albums by NPR and The New Yorker, earned a perfect 5-star review from The Guardian) highlighted the Black and Indigenous histories of popular American folk tunes, as well as revived songs unjustly forgotten in the whitewashing of the canon. Jake Blount’s new album, The New Faith, is a towering achievement of dystopian Afrofuturism and his first album for Smithsonian Folkways (coming September 23, 2022). The New Faith is spiritual music, filled with hope for salvation and righteous anger in equal measure. The album manifests our worst fears on the shores of an island in Maine, where Blount enacts an imagined religious ceremony performed by Black refugees after the collapse of global civilization due to catastrophic climate change. Jake Blount’s music is rooted in care and confrontation. On stage, each song he and his band play is chosen for a reason - because it highlights important elements about the stories we tell ourselves of our shared history and our endlessly complicated present moment. The more we learn about where we’ve been, the better equipped we are to face the future.

No-No Boy

Julian Saporiti is a Vietnamese and Italian American songwriter and scholar. His multi-media work “No-No Boy” has transformed his Ivy League PhD research on Asian American history into concerts, albums and films which have reached a broad and diverse public audience. His latest album 1975 released through Smithsonian Folkways has been hailed by NPR as “an act of revisionist subversion” and American Songwriter called it “insanely listenable and gorgeous.” By using art to dive into highly divisive issues such as race, refugees and immigration, Saporiti aims to allow audience members to sit with complication as music and visuals open doorways to difficult histories. Saporiti holds degrees from Berklee College of Music, University of Wyoming and Brown University and has worked with cultural institutions such as Lincoln Center, the LA Philharmonic, the National Parks and Carnegie Hall.

"one of the most insurgent pieces of music you'll ever hear... re-examines americana with devastating effect..." - NPR

"Amazing storytelling in the finest folk tradition." - San Francisco Chronicle

One of the most valuable aspects of country music is its versatility and diversity in sound. w/ Party Witch

The first releases from Filthy Friends, the scorchingly melodic rock group whose membership consists of some of the most original musical voices of the past three decades, came as a small, delightful shock to the system. Not only because of the names associated with the project, including Sleater-Kinney co-founder Corin Tucker, R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck and indie stalwarts Scott McCaughey and Kurt Bloch, but also because of how ably they were able to mesh their individual sounds into a crackling melodic whole on debut album Invitation.

Now, with their follow-up—Emerald Valley, out on Kill Rock Stars on May 3rd—the Friends have proven their collective mettle, crafting a thematic suite of songs that finds the quintet digging deeper into their bag of musical tricks and giving Tucker room to rage about and mourn the fate of our planet and the people who inhabit it.

The core idea came from a demo Buck shared with Tucker for a grinding blues song that eventually turned into this new album’s title track. The minute she heard it, Tucker says, it sparked something within her: “I had this long poem growing in my brain,” she says. “It turned into a sort of manifesto about the kind of place we are at as a country but also as a region. Just taking stock of where we’re at and feeling like I can’t believe we let things get this bad.”

While Emerald Valley s tarts off with idyllic imagery (“Rolling fields, they speak your name/vibrant green is here again”), the album and its title track slowly reveal the ugly underneath, with human arrogance and hubris hurting the Earth and the people who take on “backbreaking work for little pay.”

From there, the Friends address growing concerns over oil production and distribution (“Pipeline”), gentrification and income inequality within the band’s hometown of Portland, Oregon (“One Flew East”), and taking on the voice of the desperate souls that are getting crushed under the wheels of capitalism (“Last Chance County”). The band paints these themes with many different shades of the rock palette, nestling a snapping punk tune between a bit of jangly pop and an almost-shoegaze ballad, with stops along the way for songs that burn as hot and move as slow as lava and tunes that stay steady and fast as a rocket launch.

Emerald Valley is also a testament the indefatigable spirit of the Filthy Friends themselves. Scott McCaughey bounced back from a stroke he suffered in late 2017, which curtailed the band’s tour plans and is playing with more fire than ever. As well, Corin Tucker and Peter Buck were able to devise some amazing work even as their creative energies were being pulled toward other projects like Arthur Buck and Sleater-Kinney. Too, the band was able to bring a new member into the fold with drummer Linda Pitmon coming on board to replace Bill Rieflin without losing an ounce of their power.

We could all take a lesson from Filthy Friends. As proven by Emerald Valley, when a group of like-minded people gather their individual strengths together and point them toward a singular goal, there’s no telling how powerful they can become and what an impact they can make on the world at large.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

You show up at a bar or music venue. You grab a drink and within minutes you’re singing the hell out of your favorite rock song with a hundred other folks and - wait for it - a live band of nationally known musicians. In three-part harmony, no less!

Wait, what just happened?

Welcome to the Low Bar Chorale and what we all not-so-secretly wish singing could be.

We’re drop-in only: no auditions, rehearsals or commitments ever. We sing rock, alt-indie and pop music like Bowie, Lady Gaga, Yacht Rock, or Michael Kiwanuka. We’ve got an incredible band, and we’ve performed with some amazing acts - Built To Spill, Portugal. The Man, Storm Large, and others.

The best thing is that ANYONE CAN DO THIS. No prior musical experience required. Just show up with your love of music and an open mind, and we guarantee you’ll sound great.

So if this sounds like something you’d love, what are you waiting for?
