Robyn Hitchcock

Robyn's show is moving two blocks to the Calvin Theatre at 19 King Street in Northampton. Doors at 6PM. Show at 7PM. Due to the move we will not be serving dinner so grab a bite at one of Northampton's many restaurants before the show. We will have a full bar as always. Seating is first come first seated. Email iheg.help@gmail with any questions.

Robyn Hitchcock is one of England’s most enduring contemporary singer/songwriters and live performers. A surrealist poet, talented guitarist, cult artist and musician’s musician, Hitchcock is among alternative rock’s father figures and is the closest thing the genre has to a Bob Dylan (not coincidentally his biggest musical inspiration).

Since founding the art-rock band The Soft Boys in 1976, Robyn has recorded more than 20 albums as well as starred in ‘Storefront Hitchcock’ an in concert film recorded in New York and directed by Jonathan Demme.

Blending folk and psychedelia with a wry British nihilism, Robyn describes his songs as ‘paintings you can listen to’. His most recent album is self-titled and marks his 21st release as a solo artist. Out on April 21 2017, the album is produced by Brendan Benson (The Raconteurs). Hitchcock describes it as a “ecstatic work of negativity with nary a dreary groove.”

It has received rave reviews from UNCUT, Rolling Stone, Paste, Tidal and more.

“A gifted melodist, Hitchcock nests engaging lyrics in some of the most bracing, rainbow-hued pop this side of Revolver. He wrests inspiration not from ordinary life but from extraordinary imaginings…” – Rolling Stone

“These 10 gems slither, rock, roll, glide and shapeshift, coalescing around Hitchcock’s typically anxious, strained but striking and immediately identifiable vocals.” – American Songwriter

“Beloved of everyone from Led Zeppelin to REM, Hitchcock has only enhanced his status with this wonderful outing.” – Hot Press

“Witty, moving and seriously catchy, Robyn Hitchcock is a glorious return for a man who wasn’t really gone in the first place.” – Paste Magazine

Named by RollingStone.com as an "Artist You Need To Know", and dubbed a "Must Watch Artist" by The Huffington Post, one might say the future of Jamie Kent looks quite promising. Drawing on influences from modern americana artists like Jason Isbell and Will Hoge, as well as paying tribute to classic greats like John Prine and Tom Petty, Kent is a "an important young voice with something to say" (Music City Roots). His songs have been heard across major network television, from VH1 to NBC's The Today Show and World Of Dance. His latest album "All American Mutt",  debuted at #16 on the Billboard Top Country Albums Chart and #3 on the Heatseeker Charts. American Songwriter describes Eilen Jewell as “one of America's most intriguing, creative and idiosyncratic voices”. The Boise, Idaho songwriter is truly one of a kind. Since 2006, Jewell has performed on festival stages from Byron Bay Bluesfest in Australia to California’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. Her music has earned accolades from NPR, BBC, Rolling Stone and MOJO as well as from heads of state (Former British Prime Minister David Cameron ) and Hollywood actors (Tom Hanks).

Accompanying her all over the world for the last 15 years has been Jerry “Cold-Blooded” Miller. Miller’s solos are legendary. But it’s the textures, soundscapes and magic that he weaves throughout Jewell’s songs that have been a signature sound to her music.

Jerry Glenn Miller has been playing and studying guitar since his childhood in Nashville, TN, later earning a degree in guitar performance at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. Miller has played blues, country, rockabilly, folk, jazz, and surf, touring and recording with artists such as Freddy Fender, Sonny Burgess and Billy Lee Riley. He also toured for 10 years with Bluestime, fronted by Magic Dick and Jay Geils, and has performed several times as part of B.B. King's BluesFest.

Jewell and Miller share a passion for music of the past: classic country, raw blues and gospel as well as folk and singer-songwriters from the 1960s. They also share a love of space between the notes in the music they create. Miller has often said he has enjoyed playing Jewell’s songs more than anyone else’s material. Indeed, the colors and tones that he creates are a major part of this music.

While the band will continue to tour (dates are booked through summer, 2022), the idea of Jewell and Miller touring as a duo has been percolating for some years now. They are excited to present this intimate performance of their well-loved music to stages for the first time.

Bad Bad Hats are an indie rock trio from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Known for bringing a joyful, exuberant presence to their live shows, touring with The Beths, Margaret Glaspy, The Front Bottoms, Hippo Campus, and Third Eye Blind, the group took specific care to bring their fun-loving spirit to their third LP, Walkman

Kerry (guitar/vocals), Chris (bass), and Con (drums) let their collective hair down on Walkman, bringing raucous and explosive riffs alongside witty lyrics. Though you might not notice from their indie rock exterior, Bad Bad Hats draws a heavy influence from classic pop songwriting that shines through in their hooky choruses and strong melodic sensibilities.

For this release the band set out to push their capabilities as a trio. Subtle changes in process helped the band achieve this goal, such as shifting Chris from a wider multi-instrumental role to allow him to prioritize his bass playing, having Kerry record the bulk of the guitars instead. “You can hear all of our musical voices a lot better on this record.”

A carefully crafted studio sound brings the record to life, injecting it with an energetic voice that is unique to Bad Bad Hats. Walkman is the group’s fourth time working with producer Brett Bullion, including their previous two LPs, Psychic Reader and Lightning Round, and the Wide Right EP.  Bullion and the band use the studio as an instrument, resulting in their most polished work to date.

THE AIRPLANE FAMILY reunites Jefferson Starship, Grateful Dead, Hot Tuna, Bob Weir’s Rat Dog, David Crosby Band, New Riders & JGB alumni to perform the 50th Anniversary of Paul Kantner’s Jefferson Starship masterpiece of science fiction & Rock & Roll…“Blows Against the Empire.” Originally planned for Fall 2020, worldwide passionate fans of this music and recording have had their wishes granted as we all look forward to ‘normalization’ following a year and a half of pandemic mitigation and shutdowns.

“Blows Against the Empire” marked the debut of the Jefferson Starship moniker, though not of the band of that name itself, since it predates the actual formation of the band Jefferson Starship by four years. The album was recorded at Pacific High Recording Studios and Wally Heider Recording Studios in San Francisco. The result derives from a period of cross-collaboration during late 1969 through 1971 by a collection of musicians from various San Francisco bands including Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young recording at the same time in the city. These musicians included Paul Kantner, Grace Slick, Peter Kaukonen, Jack Casady, Joey Covington, David Crosby, Jerry Garcia, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Graham Nash & others.
THE AIRPLANE FAMILY will perform the 50th Anniversary of “Blows” as a 2 ‘act’ (set) theatrical extravaganza, reprising the album in its entirety, with ‘other music’ and ‘accompanied by multi-media associated with the collaborative efforts explored by Airplane, Dead, CSNY back in 1970. Long time Paul Kantner (from KBC through 2016 Jefferson Starship) lead guitarist Slick Aguilar (who also played withCrosby in the 1980s), Mike Falzarano (Hot Tuna & NewRiders), Grateful Dead’s Tom Constanten and his band Live Dead 69 with Rat Dog & Phil Lesh member Mark Karan and drummer Pete Lavazzoli who currently performs with Oteil Burbidge and with JGB for 12 years, shall also appear. Acclaimed female vocalist, songwriter and guitarist Clare Maloney will add the Grace Slick vocals. As much of the support musicians comprise LIVE DEAD ’69, acclaimed for brilliant 1969 pivoted improvisations of the halcyon Grateful Dead repertoire, fans are in store for an extra treat as the band performs their own, separate set.

Pop Pom Squad: Brooklyn based Quiet Grrrl Punk. Mia Berrin first played under the moniker Pom Pom Squad in 2015 after moving to New York to study acting at NYU—though she soon transferred to the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music—and it was at those early gigs that she linked up with Shelby Keller (drums), Mari Alé Figeman (bass), and Alex Mercuri (guitar). The group cut their teeth playing packed Brooklyn apartments, but they quickly graduated to packed Brooklyn venues alongside artists like Soccer Mommy, Adult Mom, and Pronoun. Following the release of their sophomore EP Ow, Pom Pom Squad was looking at a packed 2020, with shows at SXSW and opening for The Front Bottoms—but of course, plans changed.

The 2013 Best Documentary Oscar winning film “Twenty Feet from Stardom” altered the course of Lisa’s musical journey, telling her story, with clips of her legendary duets with Sting or with Mick Jagger on “Gimme Shelter”, left audiences eager to see and hear more, so Lisa took the chance to set out on her own reinventing classic songs with her co-conspirators JC Maillard and Grand Baton. Their organic fusion of Caribbean psychedelic soul and jazzy progressive rock ignited Lisa’s flexibility and freedom of expression, awakening her lifelong desire to make music that heals but still rocks the house.

Walter Trout has been nothing short of prolific over the course of his seven decades on this Earth.  He’s set to release his 29th solo album over a career that has spanned the globe, and delivered notoriety as one of the great purveyors of the blues and blues rock.  Trout’s history is equal parts thriller, romance, suspense and horror. There are musical fireworks, critical acclaim and fists-aloft triumph, offset by wilderness years, brushes with the jaws of narcotic oblivion, and the survival of an organ transplant few come back from.  From 1973, when he left his New Jersey home headed to Los Angeles, he has followed a road that afforded him an opportunity to just play, sharing the stage as a sideman with Jesse Ed Davis, Big Mama Thornton, John Lee Hooker, Lowell Fulson, Joe Tex, and of course the great John Mayall (following a three year tenure in Canned Heat).

When Trout walked away from the Bluesbreakers, he embarked on a solo career that has yielded a catalogue that has established a deep legacy in the world of Blues, Americana, and the realm of revered singer-songwriters. While many would slow down as they approach their 70th birthday, Trout continues to deliver inspired recordings, performances, and a voice that articulates relevant ideology and insights in to The World that inspires his deep perspective. There’s no autopilot emanating from Walter Trout, but a true a sense of growing momentum, elements of surprise, and repertoire that continues to be more compelling with each new creation.

Midge Ure OBE (born James Ure on October 10, 1953 in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire, Scotland) is a pop and rock and roll musician from Scotland, known for his particular success as a guitarist and singer-songwriter in the 70s and 80s. His stage name, "Midge", is a phonetic reversal of his real name, "Jim". Beginning his career in the pop rock band Slik, he would go on to play for power poppers Rich Kids and temporarily for Thin Lizzy.

Things kicked into high gear when he replaced John Foxx as the singer of the famous electronic music group Ultravox in 1979. Shortly afterwards, the New Wave band had a huge U.K. hit with "Vienna", and it became one of Britain's most popular groups for several years. As well, later that year, Ure also formed the band Visage. In 1980, Ure and Thin Lizzy leader Phil Lynott co-wrote Lynott's biggest solo hit, titled "Yellow Pearl". A re-recording of the song done in 1981 was used as the theme for 'Top of the Pops', a music-centered television series.

In 1984, Ure co-wrote, with Bob Geldof, the Band Aid hit, "Do They Know It's Christmas?". He was one of the few featured stars who did not sing solo on the recording. The following year, Ure scored his one and only solo U.K. number one single with "If I Was", a wistful track that's since been considered his 'signature song'. This was followed by an album titled 'The Gift'. With Ure's mind clearly on other matters, Ultravox took second place and soon dissolved.

Ure's solo career continued into the 90s with sporadic success. However, "Breathe" was an international hit single, helped by its inclusion in a TV advertising campaign for Swatch watches. Ultravox songs with his work remained popular among many electronic music fans.

Ure more recently organized the Live 8 concerts with Bob Geldof with the aim of pressuring G8 leaders into following his recipe for ending world poverty. In 2005 he was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to music and charity.

David Ryan Harris
You’ve either got soul or you don’t. David Ryan Harris most definitely does. The singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist has built an impressive catalog of soulful stories that instantly captivate. “Soulfulness comes from telling stories in in the most honest and direct way that you can,” he says. “People relate to what you’re saying when you sing from the heart.” That’s exactly what Harris has done throughout his three-decade career.

Whether it be in early bands such as Follow For Now, Brand New Immortals or over the course of six full-length solo albums, he tells stories that resonate. He’s carried this same spirit while producing, writing and/or performing with the likes of John Mayer, Dave Matthews, India.Arie, Cassandra Wilson and Guy Sebastian—with whom he co-wrote the RIAA platinum-certified “Battle Scars”. Most recently, it drove Harris’ album Lightyears, which boasted guest spots from John Mayer, India.Arie, and Nikka Costa.

Along the way, he received acclaim from All Music Guide, Glide Magazine, Elmore Magazine, Performer Magazine, AXS, Relix Magazine, and many others in addition to performing on Fox, CBS, and The CW in between packed tours.

Talk to any Adam Ezra Group fan around the country and they’ll tell you that each AEG performance is a one-of-a-kind, community-driven experience, propelled by the spirit of the people in front of the stage. For both fans and band members alike, an AEG concert is a rally to live life with intensity and soak in the moments we share with one another.

Hailing from Boston, AEG’s unconventional approach to the music world has allowed them to surge beyond their beloved hometown and emerge as one of the most uniquely powerful, underground live music experiences in the country. While Ezra has played with an array of musicians over the years, his current line-up featuring Corinna Smith on fiddle, Alex Martin on drums, and Poche Ponce on bass has been creating a new buzz around the country, as evidenced by their mind numbing tour schedule, ballooning tickets sales, and opening features with The Wallflowers, Galactic, John Oates, The Wailers, Southside Johnny, Graham Parker, and America.

Award-winning singer, songwriter, and guitarist Erin Harpe has been called “Bonnie Raitt on modern performance enhancing drugs”. Already lauded for her work with her electric blues band, Erin Harpe & the Delta Swingers, Erin has recently been gaining attention as an esteemed acoustic fingerstyle blues guitarist, a style she learned from her dad. She gets back to her roots for her new group, Erin Harpe Country Blues Duo (or “CBD”), featuring her husband and longtime musical partner, Jim Countryman. Appropriately dubbed “shit-kicking blues” on a recent UK tour, the pair creates a very full sound with their down-home duo – Erin on acoustic guitars, vocals, kazoo & foot percussion, and Jim on ukulele bass and backing vocals. The duo celebrates the release of their critically acclaimed new album “MEET ME IN THE MIDDLE” (VizzTone/Juicy Juju), called “today’s country blues at its very best” by Living Blues, who crowned Erin “one of the finest fingerpicking acoustic blues singers in the land”!

Vapors of Morphine is a Boston-based alternative band with a unique sound and unusual instrumentation, touring the US, South America, and Europe. They were formed by former members of the Low Rock band Morphine.

Morphine veterans Dana Colley (baritone sax) and Jerome Deupree (drums) recruited New Orleans blues guitarist/singer Jeremy Lyons to pick up their late-leader Mark Sandman’s 2string slide bass in 2009. This was for a concert tribute to Mark, who invented the instrument in 1989, and died of a heartache onstage in 1999.

That tribute concert turned out to be just the beginning of more than a decade of music. Alongside Morphine songs Vapors of Morphine play their own dreamy originals and interpret American and African blues traditions. In addition to the 2string bass, Lyons plays guitar, electric bouzouki and the traditional 4-string bass guitar. Dana Colley has in a sense invented an instrument of his own: he plays an electric baritone saxophone processed through guitar effects pedals into Fender Twin amp. The sound is otherworldly.

The band has released two albums, “Ever Expanding Elastic Waste Band” in 2010 and “A New Low” in 2015, with a third album “Fear and Fantasy” coming out on the UK’s Schnitzel Records in 2021.

Boston area drummer Tom Arey (Peter Wolf, J. Geils Band, Ghosts of Jupiter) took the rhythm reins in 2019 following Jerome Deupree’s departure. Tom brings a fresh approach that is featured on the upcoming album, alongside Deupree’s.

Grace, Sophia, and Hulda Quebe front an innovative Progressive Western Swing band of archtop guitar, upright bass, fiddles and sibling harmony. The Dallas-based five-piece presents a unique Americana blend of Western Swing, Jazz-influenced Swing, Country, Texas-Style Fiddling, and Western music.

“We differentiate our music as ‘Progressive Western Swing’ from simply ‘Western Swing’ because we aren’t trying to sound just like Bob Wills,” Grace Quebe explains. “Instead, we continue his vision, playing the style he pioneered in an authentic way by incorporating new genres and songs, interpreting them using our own unique voice through Country instrumentation.”

The band’s stripped-down acoustic instrumentation breathes new life into seasoned sounds once found in Texas dance halls and honky-tonks. Grace continues, “To us, preserving the tradition of Western Swing isn’t about keeping something alive like a relic. Western Swing has always been about innovation.”

Innovation has led the sisters to channel the musical connection between danceability and emotiveness, combining old sounds with new feelings and old feelings with new sounds. It’s not nostalgia that drives the band as purveyors of Western Swing, but the aspiration to take the music back to its roots and sustain the spirit of Swing.
