The Slackers, Soularites and The Upstarters at Ottobar May 29th

For more than 28 years, the NYC-based and critically acclaimed Slackers have been touring the world with their blend of Ska, Reggae, and Soul. The Slackers are a sextet based out of New York City. They mix together ska, reggae, soul, and rock n roll. Balancing strong rhythms with classic songwriting and poignant contemporary lyrics. Since 1991, the Slackers have released fifteen albums and countless singles, while their 1000s of live performances feed their fans with energetic sets of ecstatic music. The press agrees: Modern Vinyl says “For some bands, hitting 25 years together seems light years away. For The Slackers, it’s a cause for celebration. The band is deeply rooted within the ska movement, while their 'Jamaican Rock n’ Roll' sound sets them apart from many bands today."

Yachtley Crew is a Los Angeles area based band of talented and tenured musicians with a common set of goals: to entertain music lovers with some of the greatest songs ever written back in the late 70's and early 80's, and to have as much fun as possible while performing those hits. Some fans may know it as "soft rock", others may identify it as "yacht rock", a more recently coined phrase. One thing is for sure, Yachtley Crew takes their sound very seriously. "They pay tribute to the songs by nailing the performances, but also blow the crowds away with their live presence, group banter and on-stage antics", said one scribe... Be sure not to miss this first-class tribute coming soon to a club, ship or yacht near you!

Constantly defying classification, THE RESIDENTS have been regarded as icons in the world of experimental music for almost fifty years. In addition to their groundbreaking work in the areas of trance, world fusion, electronica, punk, industrial and lounge music, the group has also been credited with being among the originators of performance art and music video, with their videos included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Their lengthy career has also taken them into the world of film and television music, having scored numerous films and TV series as well as several projects for MTV. In addition, the group is also thriving in the world of digital media having released ten DVDs, and two internet series.

Currently, in collaboration with noted video artist, John Sanborn, The Residents are creating a major multimedia event to be performed at the Museum of Modern Art on Jan 24 & 25, 2020. In addition, based on the recently discovered recordings of Alvin Snow, aka Dyin' Dog, the group is completing their 49th studio album, METAL, MEAT & BONE. Then, in the spring, The Residents will embark on another world tour, again featuring the music of Alvin Snow while also revisiting Duck Stab, one of the band's most popular albums.

For Sophie Allison, aka Soccer Mommy, color theory is a distillation of hard-won catharsis. The album confronts the ongoing mental health and familial trials that have plagued the 22-year-old artist since pre-pubescence, presenting listeners with an uncompromisingly honest self-portrait, and reminding us exactly why her critically-acclaimed debut, 2018’s Clean, made her a hero to many. Wise beyond her years, Allison is a songwriter capable of capturing the fleeting moments of bliss that make an embattled existence temporarily beautiful. With color theory, Allison’s fraught past becomes a lens through which we might begin to understand what it means to be resilient.

In a way, the trop-pop duo – singer/guitarist Matthew Terry and drummer Eugene Chung – have been building to their brand-new album, SEQUOIA MOON, ever since jettisoning their Dallas, Texas, hometown for the arts-and-culture oasis of Austin after graduating high school in the early 2010s. The band quickly rose through the ranks of the local Austin scene with their 2014 debut Driving To Hawaii, teeming with both the escapism and recklessness of youth and the composure and charm of ‘60s-era pop, doo wop and bossa nova.

2018’s Happy Camper, 2019’s Honeyweed and 2020’s Avenue G further cemented the band’s place as one of the indie genre’s brightest stars. Summer Salt soared past 1 million monthly Spotify listeners and toured the world, all as Live Nation’s Ones To Watch and American Songwriter hailed them for their breezy, synesthetic soundscapes.

“There’s a lot of running away on this album,” Terry says, noting SEQUOIA MOON is, at its core, a record about transitions: intrapersonally, interpersonally, and in the scope of the world at large. The songs are culled from diverse periods throughout the band’s history – standout “Colors Of Your Love,” among others, dates all the way back to 2013 – but their themes are timeless and indelible, detailing life at its most basic: the push toward a bright, bold future while looking back fondly on what’s led you there.

That juxtaposition is well represented musically, too. The hallmarks of Summer Salt are alive and well – the jazzy dynamism of “Hocus Pocus” and first single “Monday’s Facil,” the peaceful solemnity of “Trouble In Paradise” – while newer elements like synths and additional percussion push the band’s sound forward with a newfound moodiness and tension.

Terry hails Chung as a grounding presence to his own eccentric, blue-sky extravagance, and when the principals meet in the middle on SEQUOIA MOON, listeners are left with the edge and emotion of the band’s early work filtered through a more mature lens. As such, the album stands as another hallmark in a career of era-defying art that spans genres and generations – offering audiences the perfect blend between substance and sunniness.

With each new release, Elias Bender Rønnenfelt, Jakob Tvilling Pless, Johan Surrballe Wieth and Dan Kjær Nielsen
refigure the contours of a typical Iceage song. This is especially true of Seek Shelter, their fifth LP and first for
Mexican Summer. Enrolling Sonic Boom (Pete Kember of Spacemen 3) to produce the record and an additional
guitarist in the form of Casper Morilla Fernandez, Seek Shelter sees Iceage’s propulsive momentum pushing them
in new, expansive, ecstatic directions. A decade on from their first record, Iceage continue to harness their lives
together through music. This journey, in music and life, has never progressed in a linear fashion.
Seek Shelter is the sound of a tight emotional core unwound. Rain dripped through cracks in the ceiling of
Namouche, the dilapidated wood-paneled vintage studio in Lisbon where the band set up for 12 days. The band
had to arrange their equipment around puddles. Pieces of cloth covered slowly filling buckets so that the sound of
raindrops wouldn’t reach the microphones. Kember arranged garden lamps from a nearby party store for mood
lighting in the high-ceiling space. It was the longest time Iceage have ever spent making an album. When the rain
had stopped, Seek Shelter revealed itself as a collection of songs radiating warmth and a profound desire for
salvation in a world that’s spinning further and further out of control.

FUZZ

Ty Segall, Charles Moothart and Chad Ubovich

Abandoning expectation. Abandoning reservation, consummation, resignation, and trite dictation. Instinct is all there is when it comes to the divination of harsh salvation. Segall, Moothart, and Ubovich are exploring all the blank-ations of what will be, or has always been, Fuzz II. Tried and true methods mixed with tongue twisting, teeth shattering, seizure-inducing stabs at the norm. Who knows … maybe that’s wrong. Maybe it’s all done. Played out. Maybe it’s not for want of new but for lack of old. But probably not. Bathe in the heat wave that is Fuzz, and regret nothing in the time freeze. Necessity is the mother of invention creation; and devolution stakes its claim in the past as it continues to bind itself to the future.

San Francisco, Los Angeles, heaven, hell, lunar fields, subterranean hallucinations, traffic jams, sleepless days, hazy nights, recollection or blind reflection. It is all there and so should be you. 2015 will bring a new surge of slime, fuzz, and otherwise bittersweet concoctions of earthly lettering. It will be heavy, chaotically controlled, softly serpentine, and blindingly barbaric. To translate the auditory from ethereal to saliva soaked semantics is to shatter a promise as it’s made.

In the meantime, Ty, Charles, and Chad walk on. It is what it is. Just like everything else. And if you don’t know, now you know.

This message brought to you by In the Red Educational Services … as it was before and is it will be again.
