Living Legend -- few within hip hop ever earn such a moniker, but with nearly 40 solo and collaborative releases, Los Angeles' MURS has truly run the gamut of independent success.

Early work with 3 Melancholy Gypsys and the iconic Living Legends paved the way for MURS' celebrated journey in the music industry. The West Coast representative would use this unparalleled crash-course in indie hip hop to establish his critically-acclaimed catalog of work, including MURS 3:16 The 9th Wonder Edition.

2008's release of Murs For President on Warner Bros. provided a new national spotlight. As the founder of the pivotal Paid Dues festival, MURS would continue to elevate his presence in the genre by amassing a list of collaborations that included Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, will.i.am, DJ Quik, E-40, and many others.

His signing with Tech N9ne's independent Strange Music label in 2014 yielded three full-length albums as well as several national tours. He further raised the stakes by breaking a Guinness World Record with a 24-hour live rap marathon on Twitch in 2016.

2019 saw MURS return to his roots, teaming with 9th Wonder for the highly-anticipated release of The Iliad Is Dead And The Odyssey Is Over.

Meanwhile, the summer of 2020 gave way to the triumphant return of Felt -- the duo comprised of Murs and Slug of Atmosphere, with the surprise release of their fourth album, Felt4U.

Murs closed out 2020 as only he could, partnering with DJ.Fresh for the release of Love & Rockets Vol 2: The Declaration. The full-length solo album stands as a personal testament to Murs' influence and legacy on West Coast music.

Operating independently of labels once again, MURS stands as a beacon of self-made success and unbridled respect for the craft in a new era.

Some seriously funky groups come in Five’s The Jackson 5, The MC 5, Jurassic 5… and of course Fort Knox Five. While Fort Knox Five compose music like a band in the studio with live instrumentation blended into electronic music, they are renowned for their exciting and eclectic DJ performances. Founding members Steve Raskin and Jon Horvath established a unique live DJ set using mashedup acapellas and effects woven into original tracks, exclusive mixes and dance floor destroyers. These sets have proven to be irresistible to club goers worldwide, rocking parties with infectious grooves that effortlessly move from funk, reggae & glitchhop to prime time 4/4 beats & breaks. With the untimely passing of Jon H, Steve Raskin has taken over as the principle DJ for the group and now leads the charge of the Fort Knox brigade on the road into the funky future. Fort Knox Five has toured and performed for nearly two decades.

Posh Josh Bio: Originally hailing from New York City coming up out of the Disco and Funk age, with Jazz musician parents and then seeing the advent of electronic music and Hip Hop … It is no wonder why Josh gravitated towards HOUSE!
Playing shows with DJ Dan, Rob Garza, Fort Knox5, Diva Danielle to name a few. But most notable building a steady fan base though CONNECT, Posh’s regular event at the Animas City Theatre and shows at Burning Man. The doors have opened to now playing: The Light House S.F., DTLA, The Pink Bunny and Pariah Express art cars, Main Stage at Ashram Galatica, Decadent Oasis, LoveLand, ZaZen, The Pink Spot and many more.  Infusing, cooking and mixing up all of these influences laid in with a Dirty House beat …  Posh Josh will take you on a journey, diving in DEEP, allowing you to find and CONNECT with yourself and others … Be prepared to MOVE and SWEAT !!!

Codestar Bio: Wielding a style that blends organic instrumentation and vocals with deep bassy dance beats, expansive effects, loops, samples, and turntablism, CodeStar’s sets and productions are inspired by an invigorating Love for Life! He brings a live and unique mix to every occasion, maintaining continuity, while refusing to be stylistically confined. CodeStar is truly a reflection of our modern era’s rainbow of diversity, with a wide range of influences including world, electronic, reggae, funk, house, tribal, bass music, and more, combining it all into a style he has coined as “World Tribe Vibez”. In addition to being a seasoned Ecstatic Dance DJ, event producer, and MC, he has shared the stage with many talented artists, including Mose, Swahé, DÅR, Beat Kitty, Bass Temple, Mixwell, Yemanjo, J.Pool, Nahko Bear, Tubby Love, Amber Lily, Tina Malia, Kabaka Pyramid, David Starfire, and more. Blessed to live in Durango Colorado, immersed in an amazing community, he brings positive vibes to every event he is part of. Cycles epitomize the power-trio format with ripping guitar, fat bass grooves played out through furious slapping, and viciously dynamic drum beats flowing over intricate tempo changes. Each member wields a unique take on their instrument that when played together, forms a truly fresh and cohesive sound. Patrick Harvey commands the guitar with speed and precision reminiscent of Jimmy Herring while using his loop pedal virtually as its own instrument, a skill unique only to him. At the heart of the band lies Tucker McClung’s dominant slap-bass chops that captivates audiences and pumps the musical blood through the band. The recent addition of drummer, Luke Stone has brought new fire and life into the band. With swift chops, fierce fills and decisive tempo, Luke has only further intensified the already explosive sound that is Cycles.

The current incarnation of the ever-developing sound of Cycles reveals itself today as a speeding freight train of sound and rhythm. Screaming peaks and balanced grooves find their way out of the chaos of a jam while samples ripped from the likes of Madonna, Lil Nas X and many more ring out and grab the unsuspecting audience by surprise, adding to the multicolored blend of sound filling a room and often standing out as comedic elements of the show. Drawing influence from artists such as Rage Against the Machine, J. Dilla, Primus, Weather Report, and many more, Cycles fuse an eclectic blend of genres to produce an original sound that has become harder and harder to find. Although only a few years old, Cycles have over 350 shows under their belt with tours extending across the entire U.S. A heavy touring schedule keeps them on their toes while providing the inspiration to continue to write and always strive to play better. Look out for their name soon on a festival schedule in your hands or a club marquee playing with your favorite bands.

Dirtwire stands poised between ancient Mother Earth and modern technology, a blend of ethnomusicology and the psychedelic trance state, gut-bucket delta blues and what the band variously dubs “back-porch space cowboy blues, swamptronica, and electro-twang.” It’s a sound informed by Dirtwire’s travels and performances around the globe, where East meets West and North joins South. From the favelas in Brazil, Femi Kuti’s Shrine in Lagos, Tokyo’s bluegrass clubs, Ayahuasca ceremonies in Central America, Gamelan performances in Bali, desert festivals in the Australian Outback, and the 20th anniversary of Kazakhstan’s modernized new capital Astana, the band spreads its message by building bridges across musical cultures in their own unique way. Dirtwire plays an array of instruments both ancient and modern, including West African kamale ngonis, jaw harps, space fiddles, whamola basses, Rickenbacher electric 12 string guitars, bowed Banjos and mouth harps from around the globe, all interwoven into modern laptop beat creation. Hailing from the underground west coast electronic bass music scene Dirtwire finds itself at the forefront of experimental electronic music production mixing in their wide array of world instruments with sampled beats and 808’s. Dirtwire’s live shows are a communal psychedelic journey, which have been channeled into their latest full-length effort, Electric River.

Animas City Theatre Presents
Passafire with Dubbest
Proof of vaccination (Physical card or picture of card on phone is accepted) or a negative PCR test with 72 hour time stamp needed to enter venue

Passafire’s latest single, Keepin’ On,  serves as a mission statement for the veteran rock-reggae outfit as they continue to forge ahead through their second decade of reimagining the boundaries of the current rock-reggae landscape.

Unflinchingly optimistic, Keepin’ On shows off what Passafire does best: expertly blending the macro/political and the micro/personal. The rock-steady anthem weaves together Passafire’s take on global warming, economic uncertainty, and technology’s threat to personal privacy with the band’s dedication to survival, intent on thriving by any means necessary.

“We are very grateful to be where we’re at with awesome fans that sustain and support us,” said Passafire’s bassist Will Kubley. “But every band wants to get to the next level” quickly pointed out lead guitarist/lead singer Ted Bowne. “We keep reaching new milestones and having new meaningful events, but we still have many ambitions we want to achieve. So we’ve got to keep going until we do.”

Passafire is set to embark on their Keepin’ On Tour in spring of 2020, and will play both coasts and the Midwest, as well as several festival dates.

Since forming in 2003, Passafire has released a total of six studio albums and boasts credits like producing with Paul Leary (Sublime, Pepper, U2, Slightly Stoopid), #1 albums on both the Billboard  and iTunes Reggae charts, and sharing stages with rock-reggae OGs 311 and Pepper, and legends Toots & the Maytals, the Wailers, and John Brown’s Body, who in the band’s early years, inspired them to explore reggae with a gritty edge.

“We like to mix tight, clean reggae grooves with distorted guitar riffs” insisted Ted, “We’re ‘90s kids,” added Will, “we love rock, hip-hop and metal equally. It was always natural for us to straddle the line between genres.”

Passafire’s name is a take-off on The Wailers’ classic Catch a Fire album and the band’s hypervigilance towards honoring the culture without appropriating it combined with their unwavering dedication to the expansion of their skills as musicians, producers and songwriters, has led the band to create a sound that stands out from their peers.

Experiencing an unexpected tragedy or loss often provokes a period of self-reflection, a time to contemplate one’s own place and purpose in the world. That was true for El Ten Eleven’s Kristian Dunn. When a beloved family member passed, Dunn found his own reflections on life emerging in the music he composed. Those expressions led to the creation of Tautology — a sonic meditation on the arc of human life, composed in three parts.

Over the course of three discs, Tautology is, in Dunn’s words, “a representation of life from the teenage years, through middle-age, until the end of life.” The sounds on the album echo Dunn’s own experiences, veering from aggressive metallic riffs to blissful ambient soundscapes. And while there are shared melodies and harmonies through all three records, each one has its own distinct qualities: Tautology I, which represents adolescence, is angsty, aggressive and occasionally depressive; Tautology II is head-noddy and mid-tempo, and represents middle age; while Tautology III, quiet and ambient, represents one’s golden years.

The music on the first disc, Tautology I, has a heavier sound that might surprise longtime El Ten Eleven fans. “I wanted to represent what my teenage years were like, when I was full of testosterone and depression,” says Dunn. “When you're a teenager everything feels so grandiose and dramatic.” The album’s second movement, Tautology II, reflects Dunn’s current state. “I'm middle-aged now, and this is the happiest I've ever been. I think that comes across in the music. This record is the one that sounds the most like the El Ten Eleven people are used to.” For the final chapter, Tautology III, Dunn composed a transcendent set of ethereal music inspired partly by the loss of a dear family member. “I don't know what it's like to be elderly. But my grandmother-in-law Frances McMaster was a very inspiring person. She died recently, and I was thinking about her a lot. She was really smart. She lived into her early nineties and she wrote her fourth book when she was eighty-eight. I'd like to be like her if I make it to that age.”

Tautology is not a typical rock album, and El Ten Eleven are not a typical rock band. For seventeen years the instrumental duo of Dunn (bass/guitar) and Tim Fogarty (drums) have flourished outside the accepted norms of rock orthodoxy, releasing eight full length albums and four EPs, and performing over 750 live shows. Utilizing inventive arrangements and a masterful use of looping, El Ten Eleven create a sound much bigger than the sum of its parts. Most first-timers to an El Ten Eleven show are stunned that the band is a duo. It’s a refreshing sight and a palette whose boundaries the band have explored for unexpected additions to their sound. Tautology finds Dunn and Fogarty pushing this sound

Sego
Sego’s 2nd long player Sego Sucks is woven with the changes of becoming a four-piece band. Originally Spencer Petersen and Thomas Carroll, the band added members Alyssa Davey on bass and Brandon McBride on guitars and keys in 2018. The sound became more focused, but the raucous spirit that has kept people sweating since the beginning is just as tangible and, dare I say, primal as ever.

The Lil Smokies

Drawing on the energy of a rock band and the Laurel Canyon songwriting of the ‘70s, The Lil Smokies are reimagining their approach to roots music on Tornillo, named for the remote Texas town where the album was recorded. Produced by Bill Reynolds (The Avett Brothers, Band of Horses), Tornillo is the band’s third studio album. Formed in Missoula, Montana, The Lil Smokies have built a national following through constant touring, performing at Red Rocks, LOCKN’, High Sierra, Telluride, Bourbon & Beyond and more.
