    5TH & YORK
    WEBSITE
    WATCH

5th & York have emerged as one of the premier smooth jazz bands to come out of the Southeast. With influences ranging from the Yellow Jackets and Fourplay to the great funk bands of the 70s and 80s, 5th and York look to offer its audience a valuable experience they won’t soon forget.

The band has opened for national recording artists such as Earth Wind and Fire, Chicago, Anthony Hamilton, and Gerald Levert. When asked what makes this band different from other bands, Saxophonist D. Friday replied “We understand what working professionals want to hear because we are ourselves working professionals.” Their love for music has forged a musical experience with a high IQ and tons of energy that can be enjoyed by the smooth jazz listener as well as those who enjoy classic R&B.

With a setlist that covers the music of artists Grover Washington Jr, Kirk Whalum, Anita Baker, and more 5th and York promise to offer every audience member something they will enjoy.

The members of 5th and York are, Mike Baker on Keyboards, Derwin Friday on Saxophone, Dewarren Tate on Bass, Johnny Gilliard on Drums, Derrick Friday on Lead guitar, and Vocalist Tra Sauls-Mason. Individually these musicians have traveled the country to share their talents with music lovers everywhere and now they come together to form the distinctive sound of 5th and York.

    BRANDON STEVENS

    WATCH
    Brandon
Stevens is the rare vocalist with the ability to glide from classic Soul, to Funk, to modern R&B and Pop, with ease and conviction. For the past seventeen years, he’s thrilled audiences across the Southeast and abroad with his smooth tenor voice. As a member of legendary Detroit Soul group Chairmen of the Board, Brandon completed two critically-acclaimed UK tours. The Chairmen’s 2017 album “Words Left Unsaid” featured songs written by Melvin and Mervin Steals, the twin songwriting brothers who penned The Spinners’ classic “Could It Be I’m Falling In Love.” Brandon shines on the lead vocals for “All I Need Is You Tonight” and “Each Morning I Wake Up,” a remake of Major Harris’ 1975 hit. In 2019, Brandon’s R&B/Soul/Hip-Hop band Mellogroove was honored by the City of Rock Hill, SC as a Historic Musical Group. They have become fan favorites at York County’s annual Blues and Jazz Festival. Brandon is currently preparing his debut solo release, expected in 2023.

    SHELLEY RUFFIN

    WATCH
    WEBSITE

Music runs through Shelley Ruffin’s life with all the depth and breadth of the mighty Mississippi coursing past her hometown. A southern girl steeped in delta soul, she’s carried a melody in her heart since her formative years, advancing an almost genetic predisposition to the art form.

Born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Shelley is the granddaughter of a ‘30s-era big band leader, guitar/banjo player and songwriter who regularly opened for Guy Lombardo. The rich musical landscape of Memphis immersed her in a variety of sounds and styles. Shelley’s early years were influenced by musical greats like Al Green, Patsy Cline, Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Nicks, Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, Michael McDonald, Linda Ronstadt, Ann Peebles, and Elvis.

Shelley gravitates toward music with a common thread, a distinct soulful flavor. There’s no doubt she has been influenced by soul, southern gospel, blues, rock, country and jazz. She loves blending styles and adding her own interpretation of the singers that have influenced her love for music.

Shelley has had the privilege of working with many award winning artists, Hall of Fame musicians, and hit song writers, including: The Memphis Horns (played on over 300 #1 hits), Barry Beckett (Muscle Shoals Rhythm SecBon & producer of Etta James), Alex Harvey (writer of “Delta Dawn” & “Ruben James”), Mike Chapman (studio bass player for Garth Brooks & renowned Nashville producer & Country Music Hall of Fame Musician), Audley Freed (lead guitarist of the Black Crowes), Kirk “Jelly Roll” Johnson (renowned blues harmonica player), Judy Rodman (singer, Academy of County Music’s Top New Female Vocalist in 1985, writer of “One Way Ticket” made famous by LeAnn Rimes, vocal instructor to many including Shelley Ruffin), Ricky Ray Rector (guitarist and writer of #1 Country hit “Darlene” & “Stand Up”), Brent Mason (Nashville studio guitarist, Guitar World Magazine “Top Ten Session Guitarist of All Time”, 12 time guitarist of the year by CMA), Gordon Mote (Nashville session pianist and songwriter), Jimmy Mattingly (Grand Master Fiddle Champion / tours with Garth Brooks), Erik Halbig (Nashville guitarist, songwriter, and touring musician), and Jim Brock (Charlotte’s own award winning studio and touring drummer/ percussionist), to name a few.

    WEBSITE
Gerald Albright, born and raised in Los Angeles, was an accomplished saxophonist well before he enrolled into Redlands University. Months after graduation he joined jazz pianist/ R&B singer Patrice Rushen and took the place of the bass player and finished up the tour with her playing both the saxophone and bass. He then became the consummate session and touring musician in the 1980’s, working alongside artists from Anita Baker, Ray Parker JR., The Temptations and Maurice White to Les McCann, and Whitney Houston.

Albright then launched his solo career in the infancy of what became the smooth jazz format. He has become a core part of the genre with chart-topping albums, countless radio hits and as a member of many all-star tours. In the later 1990’s he fronted a big band and toured with Phil Collins. Between his last two Grammy nominations for his solo albums, he enjoyed his collaboration on two huge hits, 24/7 with guitarist Norman Brown and Summer Horns by Dave Koz and Friends, which were also nominated for Grammy’s in the category of Best Pop Instrumental Albums.

“Whether in concert, listening to my music over the radio or CD player, I always want my listeners to be taken on a musical journey with different textures, rhythms, chord progressions and moods. I want people to know where I’ve been and where I’m going, and to let them hear that I’m in a really good place in my life.” – Gerald Albright
