Music Is His Gift. Rodney “Keys” Shelton is the quiet storm in the music industry. Rodney began his career at the tender age of 13. Deriving from humble beginnings as a native of Martinsville Virginia, Rodney started his own band and while performing at schools and local clubs, he landed his first gig opening for artists “Betty Wright and King Floyd”.

While pursuing a degree at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina, Rodney continues to develop his gift of music. Unwearingly in his work ethic, the young Rodney Shelton started touring the east coast with the show band “Time Square” and only after a few years of touring, Rodney moved into his calling as a songwriter/producer creating hundreds of songs for signed artist.

In the early 90’s after meeting with the Legendary Music promoter/manager “Howard Rosen”, that Rosen encounter lead to another encounter with the Legendary producer Stewart Levine and Jolie Jones (daughter of Quincy Jones) in king a production deal.

With the legends at work, shopping “the demo” to top record labels, the band “Curio” signed a deal with Motown records. During the recording of their album, the band unique sound, the band performed in the HIT movie “Another 48 hours” featuring Eddie Murphy, doing three songs on the movie soundtrack.

While signed to Motown, Rodney met R&B singer “Keith Washington” and along with Marsha Jenkins wrote the NOW platinum record “Kissing You”, which after 20 years is still rocking the airwaves!

Meadows was born in West Virginia and grew up in Stamford, Connecticut. He began playing the clarinet and studying classical music at the age of nine.

He started playing tenor sax in high school, and then migrated to soprano sax. His passion for various types of music led him down an eclectic musical path. He was intrigued by the styles of jazz musicians, like Stanley Turrentine, Sidney Bichet, Johnny Hodges, John Coltrane, Sonny Stitt, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Dexter Gordon, Cannonball Adderley, Coleman Hawkins, Sonny Fortune, Joe Henderson, Grover Washington and many others. After studying jazz at Rippowam High School in Stamford, CT with Anthony Truglia, Meadows attended Berklee College of Music. There he majored in arranging and composition. He later went to the SUNY Purchase School for the Arts. During his college years he played in a number of bands including disco, R&B and various jazz ensmbles. I got a lot of sideman jobs in college, and I have always said I got my real graduate degree playing clubs, says Meadows, who perfected his craft studying with Sonny Fortune, Joe Henderson, Dave Liebman and Eddie Daniels. “Not long after I finished school, (drummer) Norman Connors recorded one of my songs, “Invitation” and then asked me to join his band. I later produced his Passion album with my colleague Jacques Burvick (Aquarium Dream) . Things just fell into place. Meadows first hit the airwaves in 1991 with “For Lovers Only”, but his career really began one day in the late ‘80s at New York’s Grand Central Station. He had been a sideman with Connors for three years, with only vague notions of eventually going solo. One day, while waiting for a train, he pulled out his horn and began playing under the huge dome. His sweet sound caught the attention of fellow traveler, producer and TV composer Jay Chattaway, who happened to be passing by on his way to the train. Chattaway was so impressed with Meadows’ sound that he hooked Meadows up with legendary keyboardist Bob James. Meadows and James collaborated on a recording which unfortunately went unreleased. The experience put him on the road to his eventual success. Meadows hooked up with numerous artists and musicians and became a well known sideman in his own right, recording or performing over the years with Brook Benton, Eartha Kitt, Phyllis Hyman, Jean Carne, The Temptations, Michael Bolton, Angela Bofill, Will Downing , Bob Baldwin, Chuck Loeb, John Lee, among many others. In the late ‘80s, Meadows stretched his boundaries by becoming a member of a New York avant-garde band called the Aboriginal Music Society. In 1990 Meadows submitted a solo project to Steve Backer at Novus/RCA and was signed to a recording contract, thus marking the beginning of his solo career. Meadows’ first RCA release “For Lover’s Only” was a huge success and was followed by his ground breaking “Keep it Right There” album. He became a staple of the contemporary jazz format with his subsequent recordings, which include Body Rhythm (1994) and Forbidden Fruit (1996), Passion (1997), Another Side Of Midnight (1999), Next To You (2000), In Deep (2002), Players Club (2004), Dressed To Chill (2006), Secrets (2009) Whisper (2013) and most recently Soul Traveler, the first installment of his Soul Trilogy which now showcases his current release, Soul City" on the New York based Shanachie Label. Meadows is a semi-pro cyclist, graphic artist and designer. Marion received a doctorate from Wilberforce Universty in 2016.

Sean Higgins

Pianist and composer is an international touring and recording artist acting as a musical ambassador to audiences worldwide. While classically trained; his own group offers a modern take on the jazz trio configuration.  Higgins enjoys exploring many musical genres and has played keyboards in many commercial settings such as R&B, pop, and fusion.

Higgins completed a B.M. in Jazz Performance at UNC-Wilmington, and an M.M. at Northern Illinois University, where he received a full scholarship to lead and compose for the NIU Liberace Sextet.

Higgins has opened for Dave Holland, Fourplay, Joe Lovano, Talib Kweli, Ryan Cohen, and Stefon Harris and Blackout.

During his 10 years based in Shanghai, he toured China extensively as well as internationally with Karen Mok, Shunza, and Ronghao Li.

Greg Lilley
When your first record was the soundtrack to “American Graffiti”, your Dad played/listened to Dixieland Jazz and your Mom was a Dylan & Beatles fan, it goes without saying that Greg Lilley brings a unique diversity to the stage.  By way of Canada and with a University layover in Georgia and Alabama, Greg has called Charlotte home for over 25 years.  During this time, he has gradually transitioned from back of the stage as a classically-trained drummer in rock-solid band and theater rhythm sections, to the front of the stage as a vocalist, guitarist and songwriter.  “Greg Lilley & Co.” is his current project with long-time friends and Jazz/Roots veterans Dave Vergato, Kerry Brooks and Brian Patterson.

Having always been ‘the baby’ in every band, Greg absorbed these older & wiser stylistic philosophies, making himself into somewhat of an ‘old soul’.  His keen sense of rhythmic responsibility has shaped every aspect of his music while remaining ‘genre-neutral’ (please read that carefully).  Greg admits “because my own musical tastes are so broad, I have to be certain every song I choose speaks to me and not simply sing everyone’s favorite.  If the song lets me ‘get inside it’, then I know I can do it well and it’s going to make someone sway their head, smile, cry, remember… and that’s just really beautiful.”  His influences range from Duke Ellington to Damien Rice and is often stylistically/vocally compared to Peter Gabriel or Paul Simon on a gig with Jack Johnson or Fleetwood Mac.

Greg has performed on stages locally (Blumenthal Performing Arts Center/”Charlotte Squalks”, “Wildwood Flowers- The June Carter Cash Story”, Spirit Square/”Tosco Music Party for Kids”), nationally (The Bluebird Café, Nashville TN) and internationally (Holland America Cruise Lines).  He’s kept good company, sharing stages with the likes of David Marks (The Beach Boys), Nelson Bragg (Brian Wilson), Johnny Thunder (The Drifters), The Georgia Satellites,  Marshall Crenshaw, Reuben Studdard (American Idol), Doyle Grisham (Jimmy Buffett) and the late Duane Jarvis (Nashville Songwriter).

Gena Chambers
A true Southern girl Gena Chambers hails from Columbia SC, where the Baptist Church was the catalyst for her humble beginnings. Because her family is rooted in music she flourished and her love of it was carefully cultivated. While Gena favors RnB her musical palate includes tastes for Jazz, Pop, Country and Hip Hop as well.

Gena’s singer/songwriter/ performer talents provided the opportunity for her to travel all over the country however, she settled in the burgeoning city of Charlotte NC. While there Gena was able to assemble a band with which she regularly performs at various venues and events around the city. Some of her more notable acts include performing with or opening for jazz legends such as Gerald Albright, Mike Phillips, Marion Meadows, Magdalena Chovoncova, Kirk Whalum, Will Downing, Jonathan Butler, Oli Silk, Bob Baldwin and Johnathan Fritzen; RnB giants like Raheem DaVaughn, Sheila E, and Shelea.

Aside from celebrating with and for her fellow musicians Gena was also bestowed the prestigious honor of performing for President Barack Obama and the Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in 2016 at the Democratic National Convention.

Gena’s passion for music is evident in her life’s work as she has painstakingly crafted a multifaceted repertoire. She is the quintessential artist, a true showpiece of the Charlotte music scene.
