It’s no coincidence two of the titles on pianist, bandleader and composer Joey Alexander’s inspirational debut on Mack Avenue Records, Origin, contain the words “rise” and “rising.”

“The Latin root of the word ‘origin’ is orire, which means to rise,” explains the restlessly searching musician, who has performed everywhere from the Obama White House to the Grand Ole Opry and has been nominated for three GRAMMY® awards. “During this pandemic, I think the first thing we should do is to start with being hopeful, which is the main theme of Origin. Instead of making it a source of frustration, I made it the source of inspiration to express myself in music.”

Good plan. On his sixth album as a leader, his first featuring all his own material, Alexander has stretched his imagination into new territory, challenging himself to write rich melodic and harmonic interplay without ever abandoning the emotional candor and transparency that have captivated crowds and catapulted his albums to the top of the jazz charts.

Pianist and provocateur Connie Han has created an edgy blend of modern and traditional jazz with her incendiary Mack Avenue Records debut CRIME ZONE. At 26, this young lioness is on a fast-climbing trajectory to jazz stardom with rave reviews from The New York Times, Jazziz Magazine, Downbeat Magazine, and more. According to Downbeat Magazine, Han has “already absorbed the post-bop piano masters” with “all the technical mastery she’ll ever need.” The New York Times describes her as “the rare musician with fearsome technical chops, a breadth of historical knowledge and enough originality to write tunes that absorb your ear easily.” Weaving in and out of the tradition, Han pays tribute to McCoy Tyner, Mulgrew Miller, and Kenny Kirkland with her own unique edge and fire at the piano.

Her connection to jazz began at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. After graduation, Han accepted a full-tuition scholarship to UCLA but chose to leave school after three weeks to pursue her professional career. It was at this time she sought out drummer/producer Bill Wysaske to begin work on what would eventually culminate her signing with Mack Avenue Records.

“This record is meant to be a statement about being rebellious… but within the tradition,” Han explains. “It’s provocative and fresh in its own way while still honoring the rich legacy of jazz.” The title, CRIME ZONE, reinforces how I brand myself as an artist: a provocateur of creative music.” “With this album she’s booking a place as a star in the jazz firmament of tomorrow,” says All About Jazz.” Watch out for Connie Han, the face (and shape) of jazz to come.”

Rodney “Keys” Shelton is the quiet storm in the music industry. Rodney began his career at the tender age of 13. In the early 90’s after meeting with the Legendary Music promoter/manager “Howard Rosen”, that Rosen encounter lead to another encounter with the Legendary producer Stewart Levine and Jolie Jones (daughter of Quincy Jones) in king a production deal.

With the legends at work, shopping “the demo” to top record labels, the band “Curio” signed a deal with Motown records. During the recording of their album, the band unique sound, the band performed in the HIT movie “Another 48 hours” featuring Eddie Murphy, doing three songs on the movie soundtrack.

While signed to Motown, Rodney met R&B singer “Keith Washington” and along with Marsha Jenkins wrote the NOW platinum record “Kissing You”, which after 20 years is still rocking the airwaves!

Jones gives honor to the Most High for his accomplishments and makes no excuses for anyone. “It is this solid foundation/rock on which I stand that has elevated me to the highest places and I’m still climbing.” His genre of Jazzy Inspirational Soul or HeartSoul is sweeping the nation as he invites people of all races, cultures, and creeds to an experience beyond such barriers to hear what he considers just plain old GOOD MUSIC!!!"

Some words to describe Kirk Whalum’s music are soulful, passionate, stirring. Forged from his Memphis, (TN) gospel roots and his 1980’s initiation into the thriving Houston, TX nightclub scene, Kirk’s big, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his. The 80’s were highlighted by kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene—especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “ discovered” him and brought him on tour, which led to five successful albums with Columbia records, including cache, Kirk’s first #1 album. As well, Kirk and Bob received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album, Joined at the Hip. After moving to LA, Kirk became an in demand session player for top artists like Barbara Streisand, Al Jarreau, Luther Vandross, Larry Carlton, Quincy Jones and most notably, Whitney Houston, amongst others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit, “I Will Always Love You”.

Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on warner bro. Records, for you perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date; others include his eclectic, and much lauded, Gospel according to jazz series, (chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4). In addition to his many solo projects, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/ jazz group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar).

Kirk is the recipient of numerous award and acknowledgements for his musical excellence including three dove award nominations, NAACP image award nomination and has won two stellar awards- gospel music’s highest honor. A twelve time Grammy award nominee, Kirk won his first Grammy award for best gospel song (“it’s what I do—featuring Lalah Hathaway”) alongside life-long friend and gifted songwriter, Jerry Peters. Kirk has also been honored with a brass note on the Memphis walk of fame and a star on the Nashville walk of fame.
