PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

1h 41m / Rated R / Sci-fi, Musical

Does The Rocky Horror Picture Show need any introduction? It’s a cultural artifact with unlimited lifespan — it creates new audiences for itself each screening, and will most likely continue to be shown in theatres until the end of linear time. The plot almost doesn’t matter (but here it is in brief anyway: an engaged couple get lost and wander to a nearby castle where they are captured, kind of, by a Transylvanian doctor in lingerie and his entourage who are attempting to create a life form but are actually in some cases space aliens – it’s complicated); all that matters is the experience of seeing it and the thrill of seeing a bunch of performers totally off the leash. Of course the people on screen aren’t the only performers anymore, either. The audience owns the movie now. They sing along, dress in costume, go through lines, and act alongside the film as it plays. And if you’re a “virgin”, as first-timers are known, this is a perfect opportunity to learn what you’ve been missing all these years.

So to return to that original question: Does The Rocky Horror Picture Show need any introduction? Clearly not. But the shadow cast is going to give it one anyway, beginning half an hour before show time!

Guests are encouraged to bring their own toilet paper, cards, newspapers, toast and other props – but please, no hot dogs, rice or water guns. New to the Rocky Horror experience? For a great audience-participation guide, visit www.badmovies.org/movies/rockyhorror/audience/ (NSFW! Contains adult language and content.)

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

1h 33m / PG / Comedy

Consider this timeline: director Tim Burton makes Pee-wee’s Big Adventure in 1985 with huge financial success. As a result, Warner Bros. is willing to pay for him to develop a script for the next movie he wants to make but not quite ready to green-light its production, so he takes a job directing Beetlejuice. In the process he gets Michael Keaton to play the titular haunter, who he would eventually also put in the famous Batman cape and cowl. So from 1985 to 1990, Tim Burton makes Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, Batman and Edward Scissorhands. That’s maybe the weirdest run of four enormously successful movies in a row ever. And Beetlejuice is the first time we see Tim Burton fully being himself – full of his insectile, spindly horror designs, perfectly cast and dripping with his particular sense of humor, Beetlejuice immediately found its way into audiences’ hearts. There’s everything to love about this dark, hilarious comedy.

2h / R / Horror Anthology

Want to get scared but have a short attention span? We've got just the thing. It’s Stephen King's Creepshow, a horror anthology movie directed by the famed George Romero and starting Hal Holbrook, Adrienne Barbeau and Leslie Nielsen, among others. The frame story of the movie is of a kid reading a classic horror comic book of the 1950s, something like Vault of Horror or Tales from the Crypt, and the movie plays homage to those comics in both tone and effects.

The horror anthology has had a long history in movies, but had mostly died off until its revival in 2012 with the V/H/S series. Something about horror is particularly suited to anthology, though; short pieces can develop a scary idea quickly without requiring a lot of development of character relationships, and with disconnected stories the audience never gets the feeling that they’re missing anything. Creepshow pulls it off in delightfully irreverent fashion. Come for the Stephen King tie-in, stay for the miniature yeti murder.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

1h 49m / R / Suspense

Psycho is based on a book of the same name by Robert Bloch. During its writing, Bloch was living 35 miles away from the real-life murders of Ed Gein, a serial killer who flayed his victims in what psychiatrists believed was an attempt to make a skin suit so he could pretend to be his dead, domineering, puritanical mother. It’s often claimed that Psycho was inspired by Ed Gein. Not so; he wasn’t caught until just before the book was finished. It’s just a horrific coincidence. Sleep well!

Psycho the movie is, of course, a master-class in suspense. Alfred Hitchcock reinvented how to scare people with movies, and he did so with such precision and effectiveness that the films he made are still used as models 50 years later. Psycho puts you, the viewer, in such tight contact with its actors that you almost can’t breathe; it’s like you’re physically in the room with Anthony Perkins and Janet Leigh. And the cold nonchalance with which it documents the aftermath of its violence is almost more shocking than the violence itself. It was made in 1960 and it will still scare the pants off you today.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

1993 / PG / 1h 16m / Family

Tim Burton’s entire artistic output, his oeuvre, is about presenting outcasts as heroic figures. Telling audiences that just because you feel different from everyone else, doesn’t mean you aren’t exactly who you’re supposed to be. Pee-Wee, Edward Scissorhands, Lydia from Beetlejuice, and Jack Skellington all have that in common. They’re outsiders in their own world, they’re loners and rebels, and they have to learn to love themselves for it.

Jack lives in a land that’s entirely made up of the trappings of Halloween, and what he longs for most of all is Christmas. But he will have to struggle with the other denizens of Halloween Town to help them understand what makes Santa Claus and Christmas so special. Will he be able to explain his obsession and find his place? Bring the kids and come

Tickets for this special “Mummy & Me” screening are $10 for adults ($7 for Tampa Theatre Members) and FREE for kids ages 12 and younger.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

2h 26m / R / Horror

A few years ago a documentary was released called Room 237, about a group of obsessive people who believe that Stanley Kubrick was trying to send the world a message through The Shining. That message varies: to some it’s the truth behind the faking of the moon landing; to others it’s about the genocide of Native Americans. They see what they want to see; the movie has caught them inside itself, like the Overlook catches Jack Torrance.

Most directors make movies to look (and sound, and feel) like the real world. It’s the fundamental trick that makes movies work; they supplant, for two hours at a time, your own internal voice. You experience them much like you do your own, normally-lived life. Kubrick made movies to seem like dreams. Scenes flow into each other; the camera pans and lingers awkwardly; events aren’t necessarily strung together logically. The viewer is constantly conscious of seeing, not having the film’s images just appear in their mind’s eye. The Shining is perhaps his best match of style and subject matter. The story of a psychically charged hotel, the supernatural evil that dwells within it, the deeply damaged winter caretaker it preys upon (Jack Nicholson in one of this best roles), and his gifted son whose thoughts can be made real, it meshes perfectly with Kubrick’s rich, floating style. Everyone sees what they find scariest in The Shining, and all of them are right.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

1h 54m / R / Horror

A few years ago, the text we wrote to introduce the Korean film The Host to the “A Nightmare on Franklin Street” series decried the travesty of Western audiences' blind spot for Korean horror. While they still don't call up the kind of beloved attention that giallo or Japanese ghost stories or Eastern European torture porn does, movies like Train to Busan, The Housemaid and I Saw the Devil have certainly made a place for themselves.

A Tale of Two Sisters, remade in English as The Uninvited (unrelated, confusingly, to the also-outstanding Korean thriller The Uninvited), is the story of Su-mi and her sister Su-yeon, as they are reunited upon Su-mi's release from a mental hospital. They return to live at their country home where the girls' widower father has remarried, and the siblings are immediately resentful of his new wife, Eun-joo. As Su-mi and Su-yeon try to resume their regular lives, strange events plague the house, and the conclusion the family finds themselves in will stick in your mind forever.

There is a particular needle that must be threaded here. Of course you need to know enough about Get Out, our pick for the best horror movie that came out in 2017, to want to see it. At the same time, how much you will enjoy Get Out is directly related to how little you know about it — and how much you leave the movie being forced to examine your own expectations. Well, nobody ever said marketing was easy.

Get Out deeply understands what makes genre movies work: you can tell much more powerful stories about the real world by setting them in unreal circumstances. The truth is cast in relief by telling lies. A straight story about a boyfriend meeting his girlfriend’s parents for the first time will never make the viewer really feel the fear they should. They never forget they’re just sitting in a movie seat. But if you link that stomach-turning relationship anxiety to something else, to the fear of being captured, controlled, manipulated, devoured, enslaved … you can tell the real story. Get Out uses that emotional resonance on every level, speaks to many different audiences. It might be genius.

2h 1m / R / Horror

Director Jordan Peele has spent the past few years developing into one of the most original, creative minds in genre film of his generation. And even with stratospheric expectations for his sophomore effort, Us is still surprising. Where Get Out was an unpredictable and deeply personal allegory pretty much from the first scene, Us presents as a horror movie’s horror movie. Aesthetically on point, full of references (be on the lookout for Jaws, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street) it’s at heart a movie where scary people do scary things — a classic home-invasion thriller in the vein of The Strangers or Funny Games. At first. By the end, it’s much, much more than that.

Us will take you as deep as you’re willing to go. Want to get jump-scared, and comic-relieved, and toss your popcorn in the air? Us delivers. Want to interrogate American history and the violence of class division? Us is here for that too. It’s full to bursting with hooks for fan theories and explainer YouTube videos. It’s subtler, but still just as willing as Get Out to get right up in the audience’s face: to what are you tethered? What wicked, hateful shadows do you call into being, merely by living the way you do? And what will you do when one day they crawl up out of the sewers to introduce themselves to you?
