PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

The Power of the Dog (2021)

2h 5m / R / Western, Drama

Charismatic, cruel cattle rancher Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch) inspires fear and loyalty in all those who know him. But when his long-suffering brother George (Jesse Plemons) finds love with his new wife (Kirsten Dunst) and brings her and her son into their home, the siblings' memories of their past and their relationships with each other need to be renegotiated.

The Power of the Dog is of a piece with much of director and festival darling Jane Campion's body of work — films like The Piano, Bright Star and An Angel at My Table. It keeps tight focus on a handful of characters with intimate, incisive character portraits while taking in its period backdrop with languid, complex single shots and uncomfortable, organic set pieces. But unlike most of her previous movies, The Power of the Dog doesn't deny the comfort of revelation. It settles accounts with a powerful conclusion, a startling hinge on which the whole film rotates, and which will recontextualize every performance and bring back audiences again and again.

tick, tick... BOOM! (2021)

1h 55m / PG-13 / Musical, Drama

Lin-Manuel Miranda has three Tonys, three Grammys, a Pulitzer, two primetime Emmys, two Olivier awards, a MacArthur Genius grant and honors from the Kennedy Center. What worlds are there left to conquer besides winning Olympic gold and directing a movie? And since the pandemic has pushed the price of used rowing machines through the roof, presumably he decided to take a seat in the director's chair first.

Tick, Tick... Boom!, Miranda's directorial debut, is a semi-biographical take on Jonathan Larson (the composer of Rent, the cultural cross-over Broadway musical that really paved the way for Hamilton to take over the planet). Andrew Garfield stars as Jon, a young theater composer who's waiting tables at a diner in 1990 while writing what he hopes will be the next great American musical. Days before he's due to showcase his work in a make-or-break performance, Jon is feeling the pressure from everywhere — his girlfriend Susan dreams of an artistic life beyond New York City, his friend Michael has opted out of art for the stability of the rat-race, and the AIDS epidemic is ravaging his creative community. The clock is ticking; what are we meant to do with the time we have?

In the fall of 1968, teenage running back Leonard George led his high school football team to the state championship in Florida, winning the hearts of a community and becoming the first Black football player signed by the University of Florida. Three decades later, without warning, Leonard disappeared. Now, 50 years since that state championship triumph, his teammates search for their lost friend, reflecting on his life and the bonds of brotherhood that have carried them through the years.

Join Tampa Theatre and Jesuit High School for a special screening of the new documentary, Leonard George and the Tigers. The film examines the extraordinary story of the young man who led his team to Hillsborough County’s first football state championship, who became the first Black football player at the University of Florida, and who still inspires young players today.

Following the screening, stick around for a film talk and audience Q&A with the film’s director, Drew Marquardt; Jesuit High School’s Director of Development, Nick Suszynski; and Leonard George himself.

LIVE ON STAGE!

The Florida Orchestra is bringing back its popular Masterworks Soundwaves concerts with a series of intimate performances throughout Tampa Bay, and Tampa Theatre is proud to be hosting The Florida Orchestra: Bach & Beyond on February 10.

TFO goes Baroque with Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos No. 3 and No. 6 and his Concerto for Oboe and Violin, along with newer works from Arvo Part and Alfred Schnittke. The performance features Jeffrey Multer on violin and Mitchell Kuhn on oboe.

Part of the Tampa Bay Times Masterworks series, Soundwaves concerts originated last season as a creative way to offer great music with fewer musicians onstage due to COVID safety measures. However, the concerts quickly became a favorite with patrons drawn to the wide range of music and composers the orchestra doesn’t often get the chance to perform.

Tickets are $25.00 at the Box Office and $27.00 (with fees) online.

2h / R / Comedy, Drama
Spanish w. English subtitles

Two women meet in a hospital room where they are both soon to give birth. Both are single and became pregnant by accident. Janis (Penélope Cruz), in her middle age, doesn't regret it and is exultant. Ana (Milena Smit), an adolescent, is scared, repentant and traumatized. The few words they exchange in these private hours create a profound link between the two, which by chance develops and grows complicated, and will come to change both of their lives forever.

Writer/director Pedro Almodóvar (All About My Mother, Volver) reunites with his muse Cruz in this twisting, convoluted-in-a-good-way family drama. This time, they tell a story that’s simultaneously personal and political, with all of Almodóvar's characteristic tugging of heartstrings but none of his distancing irony or over-the-top humor. Parallel Mothers is an intimate tale of two women and their intertwined lives, but it’s also about Spain’s troubled history, and the way strong women are linked for generations through the past, even as they help each other forge a happier future.

Citizen Cope – aka Clarence Greenwood – is an American songwriter / producer. He has released seven studio LP's that have garnered him a loyal following despite never being fully embraced by mainstream media and commercial radio.

Describing his music is difficult, he's been inspired by artists such as John Lennon and Stevie Wonder to Bob Marley and Outkast. Citizen Cope's compositions have been recorded by Carlos Santana, Dido and Richie Havens. In 20 years of touring, he has built a devout following, performing at sold out theaters and ballrooms across the country. Over time, Cope's music has become the soundtrack to the lives of those who have embraced it and he continues to inspire audiences through what can only be described as deep personal connection

Tickets range from $37.50-$59.50 plus applicable fees ($42.50-$64.50 total at the Box Office & $46.25-$69.25 total online).
