    1h 32m / Not Rated / Biography, Documentary

Born Jerome Silberman, Gene Wilder’s life was one marked by public success and personal heartbreak. His breakout role as Bloom the accountant in Mel Brooks' The Producers introduced audiences to Wilder’s uncanny ability to portray characters that were at once gentle and relatable, but also zany and completely unhinged (see also: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Young Frankenstein, and Blazing Saddles.)

But behind the scenes, Wilder’s life was, in many ways, more tragedy than comedy. He lost his mother to ovarian cancer when he was 23, and his wife, Gilda Radner, to the same disease in 1989. Ten years later, he battled non-Hodgkin's lymphoma into remission with chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant, but later died of complications from Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 83.

The new documentary Remembering Gene Wilder covers all of this and more through interviews with colleagues like Mel Brooks and Carol Kane, friends like Alan Alda, and fans like Harry Connick, Jr. and Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz. Parts of the story are even narrated by Wilder himself, thanks to tracks lifted from the audiobook recording of his autobiography, Kiss Me Like a Stranger.

Some critics have noted that the film glosses over (or ignores completely) some of the more… complicated… portions of Wilder’s life: his four marriages and less successful film endeavors, for example. It is not a comprehensive cataloging of his entire biography. But fans will appreciate the opportunity to remember some of their favorite moments and characters and celebrate his remarkable life and career.

    2h 22m / PG / Adventure

When his young children are abducted by his old nemesis, Capt. Hook (Dustin Hoffman), middle-aged lawyer Peter Banning (Robin Williams) returns to his magical origins as Peter Pan. Peter must revisit a foggy past in which he abandoned Neverland for family life, leaving Tinkerbell (Julia Roberts) and the Lost Boys to fend for themselves. Given their bitterness toward Peter for growing up — and their allegiance to their new leader, Rufio — the old gang may not be happy to see him.

It's shocking in hindsight that it took this long for somebody to make Peter Pan 2. And while Hook can’t surpass the classic original tale (what sequel can?), director Steven Spielberg certainly found a compelling way to follow it. It’s still a bizarre, chaotic, marvelous fantasia, packed with surprising performances about what we leave behind when we grow up, and how to stay in touch with the magic of childhood.

    1h 48m / PG-13 / Sports Drama

Based on the true story of Ridge View Academy’s cycling team, Hard Miles tells the story of Greg Townsend (Matthew Modine), a coach at a medium-security correctional school as he prepares a group of incarcerated students for a seemingly impossible bike ride from Denver to the Grand Canyon. As the beginner bicyclists battle heatstroke, speed wobbles, and the greatest enemy of all cyclists – chaffing – they must learn to stop fighting and ride together as a peloton. The bicycles serve not just as a means of transportation, but as a test for these struggling young men to see what they are truly capable of: physically, mentally, and emotionally.

As caring social worker Haddie (Cynthia Kaye McWilliams) attempts to be the voice of reason, Coach Townsend pushes the boys to their limit. His own words will ring hollow unless he can apply his coaching advice to his own life and make amends with his estranged father.

Also starring Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings, The Goonies), Hard Miles is an uplifting coming-of-age story about the hard choice between the path of least resistance and the road to forgiveness and redemption.

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

In 2018, Dusty Slay’s show stealing showcase at the prestigious Just For Laughs Comedy Festival caught the attention of Hollywood tastemakers, but Slay’s irreverent sense of humor developed before he even stepped on stage, through over a decade of working thankless blue collar jobs.

Long before anyone had ever even heard of Tik Tok, Slay dropped out of community college at eighteen years old. At 19, his plans to join the army were foiled by an arrest. By 21, he moved from his hometown of Opelika AL to Charleston SC. On the coast, Slay worked as a waiter and pesticide salesman for over a decade while moonlighting as an obscure, often drunk, open mic comedian.

It wasn’t until he quit drinking in 2012 that he started to take comedy and his unique talent for telling jokes seriously. His smooth baritone voice and relatable stories about growing up poor in a trailer park quickly made him a local Charleston favorite. After being voted “Best Local Comedian” and winning the Charleston Stand Up Comedy Competition, both two years in a row, his well-intentioned friends and colleagues encouraged Slay to move to LA and take a shot at the big time.

While this may have been sound advice for the average aspiring artist, Dusty wanted to try to make it in comedy on his own terms: by living the South, without getting too far away from the home that grounded him.

Today, Slay has close to half a million Tik Tok followers, four Late Night appearances, a Comedy Central set and a Netflix half-hour special under his belt. He enjoys selling out comedy clubs across America on weekends, then chills out at home in Nashville, Tennessee with his wife Hannah and daughter Daisy. He’s even a regular at the legendary Grand Ole Opry, sharing the stage with the musicians he grew up loving.

Tickets range from $35.75-$55.75 plus applicable taxes and fees ($43.25-$64.75 total at the Box Office & $47-$69.50 total online).

Emmet (Chris Pratt), an ordinary LEGO figurine who always follows the rules, is mistakenly identified as the Special — an extraordinary being and the key to saving the world. He finds himself drafted into a fellowship of strangers who are on a mission to stop the evil tyrant President Business (Will Ferrell), who plans to conquer the world. Unfortunately for Emmet, he is hopelessly unprepared for such a task, but with his new friends and some creative stud placement, he’ll give it his all nonetheless.

This year is the 10th anniversary of The Lego Movie, a film that “manages to be a smartly subversive satire about the drawbacks of conformity and following the rules while celebrating the power of imagination and individuality.” Join us to find out whether everything is still awesome! (Spoiler: it is.)

We at Tampa Theatre had been trying to get permission to screen Star Wars (now known as Star Wars: A New Hope) since Grand Admiral Thrawn was still just a twinkle in Timothy Zahn’s typewriter ribbon. For about two decades, our president and CEO has had a business card in his Rolodex with a phone number for Skywalker Ranch. But the rat-king of mergers and acquisitions in the film industry finally paid dividends in 2022, and we lifted our curtain on that famous golden text crawl for the very first time.

Since then, we’ve expanded our own universe to include the rest of the original trilogy of films, and that means an encore of the one that started it all — almost literally.

Construction is complete on the Death Star, a massive space weapon capable of destroying an entire planet. After Princess Leia Organa, a leader in the nascent rebellion opposing the terrifying Galactic Empire, is kidnapped in possession of the Death Star’s plans, she must hide them away in her droid, R2-D2, and hope he and his compatriot C-3PO can find their way to safety. Meanwhile, a young moisture farmer on the isolated desert planet of Tatooine, Luke Skywalker, dreams of growing up and being a starship pilot. He comes to own the droids, but the search conducted by the Empire leads directly to the home of his uncle Owen and aunt Beru. Luke must find the reclusive Obi-Wan Kenobi, entrust his fate to the smuggler Han Solo and his copilot Chewbacca, and learn the ways of the mysterious Force that moves and motivates the entire universe if he is to have any hope of rescuing Leia from the clutches of the dread Darth Vader.

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back was the second Star Wars movie ever made, which makes it the first Star Wars movie that was made by people who knew what “a Star Wars movie” meant. And it meant everything. Expectations for the sequel were higher than showbiz had ever seen, and production was not un-troubled. Leigh Bracket, George Lucas’s original choice for screenwriter, unfortunately passed away from cancer after submitting a first draft. Lawrence Kasdan, brought on to replace her, had put together a couple well-regarded scripts (The Bodyguard, Raiders of the Lost Ark) but none of them had yet been filmed. Director Irvin Kershner had mainly done quirky independent dramas and TV movies. The production went disastrously over-budget and over-schedule. The first critical reactions were lukewarm and bewildered. And yet? It’s a masterpiece. It’s one of two films with a credible claim to the title of best Star Wars movie. Sometimes lightning strikes twice.

The year is 3 BBY (IYKYK) and the Rebel Alliance is on the run after their victory at Yavin. The Sith Lord Darth Vader, smarting from his defeat at the hands of the Millennium Falcon and a surprising starfighter pilot with a strong Force connection, scours the galaxy for the rebel scum. Luke, Han, Leia and the rest of the crew find themselves under assault on the ice planet of Hoth, and have to split up to escape. Leia and Han, their romantic tension sparking, grab Chewie and C-3PO and head to Cloud City to hide on a colony run by Han’s old “friend” Lando Calrissian. Meanwhile Luke and R2-D2 flee towards the swamp planet of Dagobah to meet Yoda, an ancient Jedi master, after the spirit of Obi-Wan Kenobi gave Luke a strong personal reference. But Vader is as resourceful as he is determined. The bounty hunter Boba Fett, planning to take Han Solo back to Jabba the Hutt and collect his reward, leads Vader to Cloud City while Luke’s connection to the force warns him his friends are in trouble. What secrets will be revealed, and what price will be paid, when the forces of light and dark finally meet face-to-face?

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
    2h 11m / PG / Sci-Fi, Adventure

One year after Han Solo’s capture, C-3PO and R2-D2 are sent to Jabba the Hutt’s palace on Tatooine in a bogus hostage-trade scheme made by Luke Skywalker. The plan is, unfortunately, too complicated for its own good, and while Lando (disguised as a guard) tries to set up the rescue, Leia (disguised as a bounty hunter) is discovered and captured. Luke has to show up in person — clothed in black and wielding a new lightsaber, he helps the whole crew to get out by the skins of their collective teeth. Elsewhere, the Galactic Empire is constructing a second, even more powerful Death Star to exterminate the Rebel Alliance. The rebels regroup on the forest moon of Endor in an effort to open a hole for their starship fleet to attack, but Luke, convinced he must change the heart of Darth Vader, allows himself to be captured and taken before the Emperor. Will good triumph? Can Vader be redeemed?

A New Hope changed everything, and The Empire Strikes Back surprised everyone. But by 1983, audiences thought they knew what to expect from a Star Wars movie. Critics loved it (four stars from both Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel!) and audiences made it the highest-grossing film of the year. And yet nobody — not even George, despite what he may tell you — fully understood what was coming. The original Star Wars trilogy changed the film business, revolutionized special effects, basically invented merchandizing, originated the contemporary attitudes of fandom and pointed out the new path of popular culture for decades to come. By 1997, the trilogy was released to home media in special editions and set things up for the prequel trilogy to kick off in 1999. The world belonged to Star Wars. And with all its ups and downs, the highs and lows, the endless expansion and the bombardment of branding, it still does. The stories of the Skywalker line in this galaxy far, far away still move and thrill audiences of all ages. Whether you’re seeing Return of the Jedi for the first time or the five hundredth, we at Tampa Theatre celebrate Star Wars in all its messy, manic, fascinating glory right alongside you.
