PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

2h 16m / R / Comedy, Drama, Horror / 2022

Based on the famously unfilmable 1985 novel by Don Delillo (and not to be confused with the unrelated 2003 Michael Keaton thriller), White Noise is set in a cozy, leafy fictional college town, which has grown up around a small liberal-arts school called The-College-on-the-Hill. Jack Gladney (Adam Driver) and his wife Babbette (Greta Gerwig) are a complacent, privileged upper-middle class couple — he’s a professor of Hitler studies, she’s a stay-at-home mom of four with a reliance on a certain pill. They socialize with Jack’s colleague Murray (Don Cheadle), they bumble about with meaningless little pseudointellectual games, and they seem to have a happy (if broadly satirical) life. That is, until the airborne toxic event. When a truck full of toxic chemicals crashes into a train and produces a massive, black chemical cloud that slowly creeps towards the town, no one knows what to do. Will it poison everyone? Should the family evacuate? In the end, does it even really matter?

Director Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale, Frances Ha, Marriage Story) is very comfortable with the tweeded-up East-Coast yuppie lampoon that’s half of this movie’s DNA. But he’s never adapted someone else’s work before, and there’s a streak of deep, nihilistic melancholy and an ear for the lyrical in Delillo that Baumbach has never fully mined. White Noise is mannered, funny and poignant right up until it isn’t, until it becomes a portentous, dread-soaked disaster movie about conspiracy, trust, and the deadly outcomes of consumerism.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

1h 19m / R / Horror, Thriller

With its now-iconic poster of an arm in a Santa suit gripping a shining ax as its owner disappears down a chimney, Silent Night, Deadly Night sent shockwaves through American cinemas in 1984, opening to a firestorm of critical backlash and audience disgust at its tasteless treatment of beloved mythological character Kris Kringle. It was a more innocent time. In grand old slasher-flick fashion, it’s the story of a traumatized kid who becomes a murderer himself, theming his own kills after the memory of his parents’ brutal slaying. Directed by Charles Sellier, Jr., a writer, producer and director best known for bringing The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams to television in the 1970s, Silent Night, Deadly Night sticks out like a lump of coal in his filmography of mostly Christian-themed and family-friendly titles.

Though vilified upon its release, the film has picked up steam over the years among fans of cheaply made, bonkers horror and is now a seasonal cult darling, spawning a series (the subsequent films having also achieved an underground following — if you’re thinking “garbage day”, that’s from the sequel) and seeing a remaster in recent years. The film checks the boxes of typical slasher fare, including a wealth of random sex, nudity and inventive, over-the-top murders. But viewers expecting a simple story featuring a maniac Santa Claus might be taken off guard by this disturbing character study of a man wrestling with his trauma. Silent Night, Deadly Night is more than a horror movie set at Christmastime. It’s a tragedy about succumbing to one’s demons.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
2003 / 1h 37m / PG / Comedy

Comedian Will Ferrell is at his best in fish-out-of-water comedies, and Elf might be his best. At least it’s his most widely appealing. A good-natured and charming comedy about Buddy the Elf’s search for his biological family and the rejuvenating power of the Christmas spirit, Elf is poignant and family-friendly besides showcasing a hilarious and completely unrestrained performance from Ferrell. A great cast around him — Zooey Deschanel as his sweet love interest, Bob Newhart as his adoptive father, and dozens more — turns it into a classic for all ages. And if you haven’t seen it in a while, you’ll be surprised how many jokes you still remember.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

2h 57m / Not Rated / Musical Fantasy

Paris, Late 19th century. Gifted with musical genius and cursed with a monstrous face, Erik lives in hiding deep in the catacombs beneath the Paris Opera House. When he hears Christine Daaé's angelic voice, he is determined to make her the new diva. Carlotta, the opera house's resident diva, is overcome with jealousy and devises a plan to ruin Christine's debut performance. Erik is enraged and takes his revenge upon her, setting in motion a series of events that leads to the revelation of his past and his tragic demise.

Featuring K-Pop sensation Super Junior’s Kyuhyun, world-renowned soprano Sunhae Im and world class ballerina Joowon Kim, this lavish Korean production of Maury Yeston and Arthur Kopit’s Phantom (not the better-known Andrew Lloyd Webber version Phantom of the Opera, though it’s based on the same 1910 novel by Gaston Leroux with the permission of his estate  — it’s a very interesting Wikipedia page if you find yourself curious!) is an eye-dazzling and ear-pleasing take on a story the bones of which you probably already know. Captured on film by WYS EN SCÈNE from the Charlotte Theater (South Korea).

Presented in Korean with English subtitles

1946 / 2h 15m / PG / Drama

Watch It’s a Wonderful Life every year, and you’ll see a different message in it every time. On its face, it’s a heartwarmer about treating your fellow man with fairness and love, knowing that they will stand behind you when you need them. But it’s also a political movie about the destructive influence of consolidated wealth (Lionel Barrymore’s Mr. Potter is one of cinema’s great villains); it’s nearly a tragic portrait of a talented dreamer who sacrifices himself completely for others and is almost destroyed by his own frustration; and in the tradition of Dickens’s three Christmas ghosts, it’s a look at the chilling consequences of all the paths not taken in a life. Solemn and sweet but uncompromising, the movie refuses to let George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart) off easy. And the key is the title — it may not be the life he wanted, it may not be the life he deserved, it may not always be easy to admit, but it is, truly, a wonderful life.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
2002 / 1h 16m / PG-13 / Animated Comedy

Davey Stone (Adam Sandler), a 33-year old party animal, finds himself in trouble with the law after dining and dashing on four scorpion bowls. In keeping with the holiday spirit, the judge gives Davey one last chance at redemption: he can either spend the holiday performing community service as the assistant referee for the youth basketball league, or go to jail. Davey thinks he's gotten off easy until he meets Whitey Duvall (also Sandler), the eccentric, elfin head referee. And while dodging Whitey (and adult responsibility) at every turn, he falls in love again with his childhood girlfriend Jennifer (Jackie Sandler, née Titone) who remembers the rocky way they parted. Nostalgia is a powerful force. Eight Crazy Nights, seen with fresh eyes and 2022 attitudes, would charitably be described as problematic. It’s full of upsetting portrayals of people with disabilities, Rob Schneider unfortunately voices a Chinese restaurant manager, and there’s enough scatological humor to fill a couple king-sized stockings. But it’s a seasonal favorite for a ton of people who grew up with it — and it’s not like White Christmas doesn’t have its own baggage. Hanukkah movies are thin on the ground. If Eight Crazy Nights reminds you of youthful innocent fun, come and have a good time. If you’ve never seen it, don’t expect to take it very seriously. Either way, all are welcome at Tampa Theatre.

And the key is the title — it may not be the life he wanted, it may not be the life he deserved, it may not always be easy to admit, but it is, truly, a wonderful life.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

1h 32m / PG-13 / Animation, Adventure, Comedy

One Christmas Eve after watching a children's performance of the nativity scene, three homeless people – a middle-aged alcoholic man named Gin, a trans woman named Hana, and a dependent teenage runaway girl named Miyuki – discover an abandoned newborn while searching through the garbage for presents. Deposited with the unnamed baby is a note asking the unknown finder to take good care of her and a key, leading to a bag containing clues to the parents' identity. They decide to name the baby Kiyoko, meaning “pure child” but also a kind of pun on the Japanese transliteration of “Silent Night.”

Loosely based on the 1948 John Wayne western 3 Godfathers (which was itself loosely based on the Three Wise Men Christmas story), Tokyo Godfathers follows the journey of the trio as they stick together through thick and thin, hoping to deliver Kiyoko to her true home, and find their very own Christmas miracle. It’s an outside-the-box project for anime genius Satoshi Kon, better known for psychedelic-fantasy examinations of psychological states like Perfect Blue and Paprika. But it’s also a profound and humane take on a story that’s been sanded down into porcelain-figurine irrelevance.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

2013 / PG / 1h 42min / Animated Musical

Our audience has told us one thing with resounding clarity in recent years, and that’s that you really, really like singing along to movies. And listen, we are committed to making that happen for you as frequently as we possibly can. But besides that: it's Frozen. Disney animated features are always a big deal, but Frozen was legitimately a cultural phenomenon. It's the second-highest grossing animated film of all time (eclipsed only by its own sequel in 2019), it remains the best-selling Blu-Ray of all time, and you are already singing “Let It Go” in your head right now, aren't you? Luckily it deserves that acclaim. The story of the reconciliation and re-connection of Princess Elsa and her sister Ana is a different kind of love story than the usual princess movie — and it's one that everyone can connect with. So run through those vocal exercises, dress as your favorite princess, reindeer or snowman, leave your self-doubt at home and come belt one out with a thousand of your closest friends at Sing-Along Frozen.
