Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro reinvents Carlo Collodi's classic tale of the wooden marionette who is magically brought to life in order to mend the heart of a grieving woodcarver named Geppetto. This whimsical (though much darker than the animated Disney Pinocchio you may remember) stop-motion musical follows the mischievous and disobedient adventures of Pinocchio in his pursuit of a place in the world. Set during the rise of Fascism in Mussolini’s Italy, del Toro’s Pinocchio is a story of love, rebellion and self-discovery as Pinocchio struggles to live up to his father’s expectations.

A “Film Tampa Bay Presents” Screening

*****

Film Tampa Bay Presents is a quarterly series designed to showcase Tampa Bay-area films, filmmakers, actors and locations through FREE community screenings at Tampa Theatre. Just in time for the holiday season, Bouncy Boxer Media brings us a story that resonates with many: while the holidays are a time to be spent together with friends and family, it is oftentimes a moment of grief for those who have lost their loved ones. On Wednesday, Nov. 30, Tampa Theatre shares that holiday story of hope on the big screen at 7:00pm.

For the first big holiday since Tom passed, Martha has to keep it together for her family. With an ever-changing guest list, menu, and secrets starting to unfold, the Winthrop family is thrown in several directions. As Martha tries to keep the family Thanksgiving dinner under control, the emotional temperatures start to spiral into an all-out food fight.

Written and directed by local filmmaker Stefanie Davis, Home for Thanksgiving is her third feature film, following Hot Mess in a Wedding Dress (2019) and The Christmas Ride (2020). Her company, Bouncy Boxer Media, is a women-owned production company that is a champion for women’s stories.

The feature was filmed in Tampa and Lakeland and stars local actors Sallie Glaner, Chelsea Wolf, Rebecca Goldman and Nicole Acosta. Supporting actors include locals Joshua Trevilcock, Matt Winter, Krishna Ward, Jana Henry, Lucy Hammond, Fletcher Hammond, John Reidy and Lexi Balestrieri.

***

Donations of non-perishable food items will be collected at the screening for distribution through Feeding Tampa Bay. Those who donate will be entered into a drawing for FREE tickets to a future Tampa Theatre screening and a VIP swag basket from Film Tampa Bay.

The first 150 patrons to enter will also receive FREE popcorn and soda. Then, be sure to stick around after the film for a Q&A with the director and cast, moderated by Tampa Bay Film Commissioner Tyler Martinolich.

Admission is FREE, but reservations are required by selecting your ticket below.

Tampa Theatre, Ruth Eckerd On The Road and AEG Presents are proud to bring GRAMMY® nominated singer, songwriter and guitarist Tab Benoit back to Tampa Theatre’s historic stage on Thursday, Dec. 1, this time with The Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

Tab Benoit has built a remarkable 30-plus year career on the foundation of his gritty and soulful Delta swamp blues, acquiring a devoted legion of fans along the way, as well as five Blues Music Awards, including BB King Entertainer of the Year (twice) and an induction into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. He has recorded and/or performed with Junior Wells, George Porter Jr, Dr. John, Willie Nelson, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, Billy Joe Shaver, Maria Muldaur, James Cotton, Cyril Neville, Kenny Aronoff, Allen Toussaint, Kim Wilson, Jimmy Thackery, Charlie Musslewhite, Kenny Neal, Chris Layton, Ivan Neville, Jimmy Hall, Jim Lauderdale, Anders Osborne, and Alvin Youngblood Hart, to name a few. Tab's accomplishments as a musician are matched only by his devotion to the environmental health of his native Louisiana wetlands. Benoit is the founder and driving force behind Voice of the Wetlands, an organization working to preserve the coastal waters of his home state.

Formed in 1977, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band are the pioneers of the modern New Orleans brass band movement, recognized worldwide as an unstoppable musical machine whose name is synonymous with genre bending romps and high-octane performances. They have been featured guests both in the studio and on stage with artists including Elvis Costello, Dr. John, Widespread Panic, Modest Mouse, Dave Matthews Band, The Black Crowes, and many others.

Tickets range from $34.50-69.50 plus applicable taxes and fees ($42-$79.50 total at the Box Office and $45.75-$84.75 total online) and will go on sale to the public at 10:00am Friday, June 24.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

1h 54m / R / Comedy, Drama / 2022

In 1923, on the small fictional Irish isle of Inisherin in the midst of the Irish Civil War, Pádraic Súilleabháin and Colm Doherty (Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, respectively, tapping back into their brilliant In Bruges energy) are lifelong friends and drinking buddies. That is, until the day Colm says he simply doesn’t like Pádraic anymore. That’s it, friendship over. Baffled by the proclamation, Pádraic persists in trying to make amends, meeting intense resistance from Colm at every turn. The fight escalates under the watchful eyes of the entire village, including Pádraic’s sister Siobhán (Kerry Condon) and her erstwhile suitor, the troubled Dominic (Barry Keoghan), as Colm makes good on a gruesome promise. With a prophecy that death will come to the island hanging in the air, how far will these two mates take their feud?

Written and directed by Martin McDonagh, the playwright of The Lieutenant of Inishmore and The Pillowman as well as writer-director of films like Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and the above-mentioned In Bruges, The Banshees of Inisherin is a study of male loneliness and swallowed anger that’s as startlingly violent as it is often very funny. McDonagh is an old hand at examining the most visceral, vengeful extremes of human behavior, and this may be his most compelling and heartbreaking probing of that fascination yet.

White Christmas
is most famous for its namesake song “White Christmas,” which was written for the movie … Holiday Inn. But in the twelve years since that movie came out, it had already become an enormous hit, so setting a new movie around it seemed obvious -- and sure enough, White Christmas is a loose thematic remake of Holiday Inn. When you have Irving Berlin ready to write another movie musical for you, you just say yes. Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen are captivating as matched pairs of entertainers caught up in cute misunderstandings as they strive for stardom and travel the road to love. And for the first time, Tampa Theatre is showing the sing-along version, so now you can add your own voices to standards like “Sisters,” “Count Your Blessings,” “Snow” and “White Christmas” itself.

FIRST-LOOK SCREENING

115 Grains is the inspired-by-true-events story of a police officer named Matthew Sanders (Evan Gamble, Fear the Walking Dead) who suffers from PTSD and suicidal ideation after horrific experiences he’s both seen on the job and personally experienced as a child. Forced to seek council from an unorthodox therapist (Eugenie Bondurant, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It), Sanders must attempt to resolve his inner turmoil through experimental hypnosis that sends him back in time to face his past.

Written and directed by Florida-based filmmaker Andrew Kiaroscuro, whose own father Benjamin passed from suicide when Andrew was 19 years old, 115 Grains is a personal and provocative exploration of the morality of being a police officer — an examination of not just what it means to the individual who puts on the badge, but to the community of people they serve.

Immediately after this FREE community screening, Kiaroscuro will be joined onstage by members of his cast for a post-film discussion and audience Q&A.

2h 16m / R / Comedy, Drama, Horror / 2022

Based on the famously unfilmable 1985 novel by Don Delillo (and not to be confused with the unrelated 2003 Michael Keaton thriller), White Noise is set in a cozy, leafy fictional college town, which has grown up around a small liberal-arts school called The-College-on-the-Hill. Jack Gladney (Adam Driver) and his wife Babbette (Greta Gerwig) are a complacent, privileged upper-middle class couple — he’s a professor of Hitler studies, she’s a stay-at-home mom of four with a reliance on a certain pill. They socialize with Jack’s colleague Murray (Don Cheadle), they bumble about with meaningless little pseudointellectual games, and they seem to have a happy (if broadly satirical) life. That is, until the airborne toxic event. When a truck full of toxic chemicals crashes into a train and produces a massive, black chemical cloud that slowly creeps towards the town, no one knows what to do. Will it poison everyone? Should the family evacuate? In the end, does it even really matter?

Director Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale, Frances Ha, Marriage Story) is very comfortable with the tweeded-up East-Coast yuppie lampoon that’s half of this movie’s DNA. But he’s never adapted someone else’s work before, and there’s a streak of deep, nihilistic melancholy and an ear for the lyrical in Delillo that Baumbach has never fully mined. White Noise is mannered, funny and poignant right up until it isn’t, until it becomes a portentous, dread-soaked disaster movie about conspiracy, trust, and the deadly outcomes of consumerism.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

1h 19m / R / Horror, Thriller

With its now-iconic poster of an arm in a Santa suit gripping a shining ax as its owner disappears down a chimney, Silent Night, Deadly Night sent shockwaves through American cinemas in 1984, opening to a firestorm of critical backlash and audience disgust at its tasteless treatment of beloved mythological character Kris Kringle. It was a more innocent time. In grand old slasher-flick fashion, it’s the story of a traumatized kid who becomes a murderer himself, theming his own kills after the memory of his parents’ brutal slaying. Directed by Charles Sellier, Jr., a writer, producer and director best known for bringing The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams to television in the 1970s, Silent Night, Deadly Night sticks out like a lump of coal in his filmography of mostly Christian-themed and family-friendly titles.

Though vilified upon its release, the film has picked up steam over the years among fans of cheaply made, bonkers horror and is now a seasonal cult darling, spawning a series (the subsequent films having also achieved an underground following — if you’re thinking “garbage day”, that’s from the sequel) and seeing a remaster in recent years. The film checks the boxes of typical slasher fare, including a wealth of random sex, nudity and inventive, over-the-top murders. But viewers expecting a simple story featuring a maniac Santa Claus might be taken off guard by this disturbing character study of a man wrestling with his trauma. Silent Night, Deadly Night is more than a horror movie set at Christmastime. It’s a tragedy about succumbing to one’s demons.

Comedian Will Ferrell is at his best in fish-out-of-water comedies, and Elf might be his best. At least it’s his most widely appealing. A good-natured and charming comedy about Buddy the Elf’s search for his biological family and the rejuvenating power of the Christmas spirit, Elf is poignant and family-friendly besides showcasing a hilarious and completely unrestrained performance from Ferrell. A great cast around him — Zooey Deschanel as his sweet love interest, Bob Newhart as his adoptive father, and dozens more — turns it into a classic for all ages. And if you haven’t seen it in a while, you’ll be surprised how many jokes you still remember.

Where does the organ go when the movie starts? Why is there a stuffed peacock perched near the proscenium? (And, for that matter, what is a “proscenium” anyway?)

Learn the Theatre’s secrets, stories, art and architecture and witness its historic restoration efforts with a “balcony to backstage” tour of Tampa’s majestic movie palace. The 90-minute tours will kick off in the lobby at 11:30am and include a demonstration of the Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ.

These tours do sell out, so please consider buying your tickets in advance, either online by clicking your preferred date and time at right, or in person at the historic Franklin Street Box Office.

Tour tickets are $10 for general admission / FREE for Tampa Theatre Members.
