The Mountain Goats

There is always water.

In flowing rivers, in falling raindrops, in waves that will tear us to pieces, in ice cold glasses toasting the living and the dead. Water can carve away at mountainsides over eons, or come crashing over the city in an instant. Animals, fugitives, loners, and crumbling signs of life swim through the depths of the Mountain Goats’ Getting Into Knives, due October 23 via Merge. Like an eight-foot swell of blades, John Darnielle, Matt Douglas, Peter Hughes, and Jon Wurster ground the songs in the impermanence of permanence and the certainty of uncertainty, the casual and subtle threat that everything will come to an end.

“There are a number of ways that you can find yourself underwater,” Darnielle explains.

The Mississippi River slithers alongside the sprawl of Memphis, separating Tennessee from Arkansas. That constant churn fuels the city’s energy, marking it as a hub long before it became a beating heart of soul, blues, and country. The Mountain Goats tapped into that devotion by decamping from North Carolina to Sam Phillips Studio, a spot that played home to sessions for The Cramps and was designed to be a post-show hangout for Elvis Presley. The quartet packed into the studio to bask in its past, alongside guests including Charles Hodges, who played organon Al Green’s genre-defining hits.

The camaraderie didn’t end at the studio. “We would work until midnight and then return to the house where all four of us were staying, directly across the street from the studio, and hang out for hours on the patio,” Darnielle says. Cohabitation radiates throughout Getting Into Knives, many tracks featuring seven or more musicians playing at once. The skittering warm-up intro and barn-burning density of heavy metal drums on “As Many Candles As Possible” and the giddy shuffle of “Corsican Mastiff Stride” revel in full-band layering and experimentation. “A bunch of people playing together is inherently joyous,” Darnielle says. But as may be expected from Darnielle, even the most joyous-sounding songs can be full of emotional complexity.

Reckless Kelly

Understanding the virtuosity of Reckless Kelly requires the perspective of where the band has been. Cody and Willy Braun grew up in the White Cloud Mountains of Idaho. They moved to Bend, Oregon, and then migrated to that great musical fountainhead, Austin, Texas.

The band’s co-founders and frontmen toured the country as part of their father’s band, Muzzie Braun and the Boys, as children. They performed on The Tonight Show twice. Their father taught his four sons a professional ethic – integrity, persistence, hard work and professionalism – honed over three generations. They overcame hardships, struggled for recognition, and learned the lessons of the trial and error that defined them.

In one sense, it’s remarkable in the way of any musician, athlete, or businessperson who bucks the odds. In another, though, it’s utterly natural that Reckless Kelly, born in the dreams of the two Braun brothers and their heritage but nurtured in the bumpy road of maturity, became the very essence of Americana music in all its far-flung glory.

“We came along in that second wave of the movement,” Cody Braun says. “Son Volt’s album Trace had a major effect on us. People like Joe Ely, Ray Kennedy and Robert Earl Keen were always big supporters. Our goal was to make music that had a country vibe but a solid rock edge.”

In the end, all the recipe required was to just add water. Water facilitates life. It enriches the soul. As Music Row magazine proclaimed, “In my perfect world, this is what country radio would sound like.”

“This” is Reckless Kelly.

The High Kings

The High Kings are Finbarr Clancy, Darren Holden, Brian Dunphy and newest member Paul O’ Brien. The High Kings formed in June 2007 when Brian, Darren, Finbarr and former member Martin Furey were asked to join a brand new Irish ballad group by David Kavanagh after he had noticed a gap in the market for a band specialising in traditional Irish music.

It didn’t take long during there first studio rehearsal for them to realise that the way their individual voices blended together, that they were onto something special. The High Kings play 13 instruments between them creating the unique sound and atmosphere that they still showcase to this day. This was confirmed when their self-titled debut album reached number 2 on the world Billboard Music chart. In March 2009 The High Kings played 5 consecutive sold out shows to a packed audience in Dublin’s Olympia Theatre.

Yonder Mountain String Band

Yonder Mountain String Band is one of the most influential acts on the acoustic music scene. Pioneers of the Jamgrass movement, Yonder Mountain is known for their ability to channel a wide variety of musical styles. The acoustic lineup just happens to be the vehicle they’ve chosen to haul their many influences ranging from punk rock to the Grateful Dead. With a willingness to try new things and do what the music demands, Yonder Mountain continues to expand the traditional genre beyond all established boundaries and into the realms of rock n roll and improvisation.

Notorious for their wild live shows, choice cover tunes, and lengthy onstage experimentations, Yonder Mountain String Band earned an especially loyal audience on the jam band circuit. With a large following of fans known as “Kinfolk” traversing the country with them, taping their shows and trading their music, the band gained momentum and found themselves playing to sold out crowds in iconic venues such as Red Rocks, The Fillmore San Francisco, The Warfield Auditorium, and esteemed festivals such as The Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Bonarroo, High Sierra, Fuji Rock Festival, Summer Camp and Delfest, to name a few. Yonder Mountain also partnered with promoters to curate their own festivals: Northwest String Summit (Oregon), Kinfolk Celebration (Colorado), Yonder Mountain Harvest Festival (Arkansas) and Strings and Sol (Mexico)

Yonder Mountain has shared the stage with well-known bluegrass musicians like Del McCoury, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush and Bela Fleck, as well as with members of jam band icons Phish, Widespread Panic and The Grateful Dead. In 2008 they even shared a stage with Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention. The band has released 7 studio Albums and 6 live albums on their own Frog Pad Records Label. This past September, 2019 marked the 20th Anniversary of Yonder Mountain’s critically acclaimed debut album, Elevation. Out of print for years and considered by decades-long fans to be the band’s career defining album, the band celebrated this milestone with a 20th anniversary 180g double vinyl re-release. YMSB’s Elevation broke past traditional bluegrass music boundaries, opening the door for acceptance of the next generation’s take on a new style that audiences would fully embrace.

Founding Members Adam Aijala, Ben Kaufmann, David Johnston and Allie Kral, who became an official member in 2015 are now joined by multi-instrumentalist Nick Piccinni. The live show will undoubtedly be in line with what you’d expect from Yonder Mountain String Band: heart-felt, edgy and genre-defying music.

Los Lobos

“We’re a Mexican American band, and no word describes America like immigrant. Most of us are children of immigrants, so it’s perhaps natural that the songs we create celebrate America in this way.” So says Louie Perez, the “poet laureate” and primary wordsmith of Los Lobos, when describing the songs on the band’s new album, Gates of Gold.

The stories on Gates of Gold are snapshots of experiences that Perez and his band mates have had, based on where they are emotionally and how they respond to evolving life circumstances. “We live out loud most of the time and share our life this way, but then there are more intrinsic things that happen, and our songs are part of the way we react to them. We sit down and basically tell people what has happened. We certainly didn’t start this project with aspirations to create the musical equivalent to great American literary works.”

After celebrating their 40th anniversary with the cleverly titled 2013 live album Disconnected In New York City, the hard working, constantly touring band – David Hidalgo, Louie Perez, Cesar Rosas, Conrad Lozano and Steve Berlin – leaps headfirst into their fifth decade with an invitation to join them as they open fresh and exciting new Gates of Gold, their first full length studio album since 2010’s Tin Can Trust (a Grammy nominee for Best Americana Album) and second with Savoy/429 Records.

The dynamic songwriting, deeply poetic lyrics, thoughtful romantic and spiritual themes and eclectic blend of styles on the 11 track collection has resulted in an American saga in the rich literary tradition of legendary authors John Steinbeck and William Faulkner. Yet true to form, these typically humble musical wolves started in on the project without any grand vision or musical roadmap. Over 30 years after Los Lobos’ major label breakthrough How Will The Wolf Survive? - their 1984 album that ranks #30 on Rolling Stones list of the 100 greatest albums of the 1980s – their main challenge when they get off the road and head back into the studio is, as Berlin says, “trying not to do stuff we’ve already done. To a certain extent, we are always drawing from the same multi-faceted paint box, and we sound like what we sound like. We’re proud of what we feel is an honest body of work. We just want to keep finding new ways to say things.”

In the band’s early recording days - those years just before and after “La Bamba,” their worldwide crossover hit from the 1987 film which reached #1 on the U.S. and UK singles chart - they prepared for album recording sessions with top producers like T-Bone Burnett with pre- production that included multiple rehearsals and “outlining” what the project was going to be.

The Tallest Man on Earth

On April 19th, 2019, The Tallest Man On Earth released his first album in 4 years. I Love You. It’s A Fever Dream. was written, produced and engineered by Kristian Matsson and was recorded almost entirely in his apartment in Brooklyn, NY.

When asked for some insight into the album, Matsson says “Here’s what I can tell you: Of course there are some love songs and then there are some other songs. Making the album I was thinking a lot about the lenses we view our lives through and that, for some reason, our worst tendencies seem to be carried out so loudly, while our best can go unnoticed. I’ve come to realize that some of the most powerful, most inspiring moments in my life have been the most subtle and that so often the thing that deserves my attention, is trying the least to get it.”

In recent years Matsson has undertaken single oriented projects that incorporate writing, producing and self releasing songs and videos in regular intervals, often with purposefully intense deadlines. He’s described finding inspiration in the entire process, and in particular in the satisfaction of making something and having it out quickly. For listeners and viewers the fascination has been in watching an artist work through his life, in problems and celebrations large and small, putting his thoughts out into the world while he’s still processing them himself and watching them evolve over time.

Southern Culture on the Skids

Southern Culture On The Skids has been consistently recording and touring around the world since its inception in 1983, when Rick Miller was a grad student at UNC-Chapel Hill. The current lineup (Dave Hartman – drums; Mary Huff – bass and vocals; Rick Miller – guitar and vocals) has been playing together for over 30 years. The band’s musical journey has taken them from all-night NC house parties to late night network talk shows, and from performing at the base of Mt. Fuji in Japan to rockin’ out for the inmates at NC Correctional Facilities. Their music has been featured in movies and TV, and used to sell everything from diamonds to pork sausage, and their legendary live shows are a testament to the therapeutic powers of foot-stomping, butt-shaking rock and roll.

SCOTS’ DIY roots go all the way back to the days of making cassette demos in the dirt floor basement of the original band house. “It was a beat down house we found in the woods, covered in kudzu vines”, Rick recalls. “We hunkered down there and came up with the sound and ideas we’ve been refining and tweaking ever since; a blue plate special of musical genres, all mixed together to give up new flavors and combinations.”

Opening Act: Dressy Bessy

"This album comes out 20 years after our first one," guitarist John Hill says of Dressy Bessy's second Yep Roc Records release, Fast Faster Disaster. "20 years in and we're better than ever.  Tammy's songwriting and performance are as vital as ever.  She's the genuine article and one of the strongest, most talented women I know."

"This is the most selfless record I've ever written," asserts frontwoman Tammy Ealom. "In the past, the bulk of my songwriting was inspired by something or someone who'd pissed me off. Writing a song about it made me feel like I was getting the last word, case closed in my mind. With this album, each song was written for someone or something I love."

Fast Faster Disaster makes it clear that, two decades from the band's seminal D.I.Y. beginnings, Tammy Ealom's distinctive songcraft remains as sharp as ever. The Denver combo's second Yep Roc release, and their second since the seven-year recording hiatus that preceded 2016's KINGSIZED, Fast Faster Disaster's new songs affirm Tammy Ealom's career-long commitment to barbed lyrical insight and effortlessly catchy melodies.

In honor of the album that made them an international act, They Might Be Giants is celebrating Flood's 30th anniversary in 2022 by performing the album, in its entirety, on stages in select cities across the US. The show is "an evening with" and TMBG will play two full sets with their barnstorming live band featuring the show-stopping Curt Ramm on trumpet. How will it be presented? In sequence, in reverse sequence, alphabetical, or mixed into additional repertoire? It could be different on any given night. But, in addition to Flood, the song selection in the “evening with” show will span the band's entire career from early favorites to brand new tracks, as well as the live improvisations that have become a highlight of TMBG shows.

ABOUT FLOOD

Before Alternative Rock, when rock dinosaurs still roamed the earth, They Might Be Giants crawled out of the primordial performance art scene of the Lower East Side and on to the college rock scene with a series of breakthrough songs and best-selling albums. Vaulted into the national scene by a series of highly creative videos, the band ultimately garnered the attention of the powerhouse major-label Elektra Entertainment. Collaborating with British hit-makers Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley, as well as emerging indie engineers Roger Moutenot and Patrick Dillett, the band embarked on an album that would leave their lo-fi roots behind in exchange for a sonic adventure to be called Flood. Embraced by critics and audiences alike, the 19-song album would go on to go platinum and garner a clutch of timeless favorites for the band including "Birdhouse in Your Soul," "Your Racist Friend," "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)," "Particle Man," "Dead," and many others.
