!mindparade is the brainchild of Alex Arnold. Grunge guitar licks, orchestration, synth pop, and experimental rock meld together with avant-garde sound.

The band grew out of Arnold's solo recording projects. After spending his teen years digging through his dad's vinyl collection of vintage prog greats and self-recording in his parent's basement, Arnold went on to study music theory and earn a B.A. in Music Composition, focusing on 20th-century composition techniques, electronic music, and orchestral writing.

At his home studio, Arnold collaborates with friends to flesh out !mindparade's recordings and live iterations. Their output is as kaleidoscopic as their influences, resulting in albums that balance varied stylistic tendencies- from rock to pop to experimental noise- and live shows that feature a revolving lineup of players and often a live string section.

!mindparade self-released it’s debut record Everything Is Happening in 2012, described by NUVO magazine as “an ambitious low-fi bedroom symphony marked by flourishing psychedelic arrangements and dreamy tunes that recall everything from Deerhunter to T. Rex to the Elephant 6 Collective”. The band went on to release Hero EP (2013) and Dead Mystics (2015) on tape cassette and vinyl via micro label Tree Machine Records, followed by Aleatoric Phase (2017), which featured ambient avant-garde synth explorations. In 2020 the group founded their own label, Neon Underground Archives, in Portland, OR, in order to self-release their experimental rock album entitled Hypertonic.

w/ Hayley Lynn

They say it takes nearly a decade for a wine to mature. The same could be said for The RT’s (formerly The Rad Trads). If you caught their brand of raucous, beer-soaked trad jazz and blues in the early days, you‘ll see the same ingredients (boisterous horns, impassioned vocals, and a driving groove) but a new flavor, and the kind of maturity and subtlety that only comes with time.

That’s why it felt like the right moment to change the band’s name, Patrick Sargent (vocals, saxophone, keys) explains: “We made this album that felt more authentic and honest than anything we’d ever done, but it didn’t sound like a record by a band called The Rad Trads. So it only felt right to take ownership of this next step in our evolution and abbreviate the name.”

Their forthcoming self-titled album – out Oct 22 – celebrates these changes. While the world was going through difficult times in 2020, the band – Sargent, Michael Harlen (bass, vocals); Alden Harris-McCoy (guitar, vocals); Michael Fatum (trumpet, vocals) and Jamie Eblen (drums) – took the opportunity of downtime to produce new material. They were able to find solace in a greater collaborative energy and discovered a new creative process.

“This record was different from our previous records in that the arrangements were made for the studio,” Harlen explains. “In the past, our tunes would reveal themselves on the road; learning and tweaking them as we played in different rooms each night. Then, when we got into the studio, we would record a version pretty faithful to what we would have played the night before in a bar. But this time around our producer Chris Peck encouraged us to really focus on preproduction and to approach the arrangements through a studio lens. The result is less about raw energy and more about finesse.”

Charged with a new enthusiasm, the members of The RT’s are ecstatic to be back in front of crowds, playing all new music from their 2020 record See You Again and the upcoming release, The RT’s.

Peck describes a phone call with the band on the road for the first time since the pandemic began: “The positive energy and camaraderie was spilling out over the phone. They described paying attention to their set in new ways; responding to the crowds in ways they hadn’t before. They are hitting a stride, clearly confident and following their instincts. This makes me so happy. It seems as though they have figured out something about themselves that has reawakened in them new reasons to do what they do. They are excited and proud of their music like never before. I am in awe of them. I believe their best work is ahead of them and I cannot wait to see what happens next.”

“There is nothing like playing our music together on stage,” Eblen says. “Audiences all over missed it just as much as we did and it feels damn good to be exchanging that energy again.”

w/ Sitcom

Jerry Paper is Lucas Nathan. Jerry Paper is instant coffee, bullshit jobs, weekly therapy sessions, crises of conscience, corporate mascots, 5meo-DMT trips, jokers down on their luck, surveillance, a jacked dad high on meth at a child’s party, apologies, trash cans, cacti, and the magic of words. From its initial days as a DIY solo synth project in the early 2010s to its current incarnation as a five-piece band, Jerry Paper has always been the earthly conduit for the wild and uncanny imagination of its creative mastermind.

In 2019, back from traveling the world for the I Am Begging You To Come To These Shows tour, Jerry Paper hung up their flowing dress and sandals, glided into the studio, and began giving material form to their new musical manifestation: Abracadabra.

Over thirteen songs, they serve up a blend of jazzy instrumentation with soft-rock stylings and some seriously catchy earworms, forging a style that hints at the avant-pop of Scott Walker, the sweet enchantment of Paul McCartney, and the cryptic, smooth grooves of Steely Dan.

Like all good stories, Abracadabra boasts unforgettable characters: someone with a victim complex (“Cholla”); an alien captive surveilled by a mysterious presence (“Puppeteer”), and a buff man whose life is thrown into shambles when he is caught smoking methamphetamine at his child’s birthday party (“Body Builder on the Shore”). Nathan’s interest in talk therapy led to “Spit It Out”, a song about the health-inducing qualities of improvised speech; “Memorial Highway” is about existence after death in other people’s memories, and “Apologist” and “All I Need” affirm the value — and occasional futility — of recognizing one’s wrongs. Building new realities out of words and sounds is no easy task, and on “Trash Can”, Nathan mourns the frustrations of the creative process.

Abracadabra is many things at once: arch and sincere, bizarre and all too real, funny and melancholic — the work of an artist living in a world when despair so often tips over into ridiculousness, sometimes the only thing left to do is laugh.

Nathan worked with longtime visual collaborator Steve Smith and avant-comedian Alan Resnick to create the album art, which depicts an alien outsider spotting someone he recognizes. Who could it be? Don’t worry. Sit back, relax, and let Abracadabra cast its spell.

It is easy to find the Devil in The Star and The Devil, the searing solo debut from Portland rock staple Gabby Holt. Holt explores her past connections in six bristling parts, each of which she wrote while immersed in connections that were, at times, driven by addiction, fear, or insecurity. These emotions come to light in the heavy, yet deliciously catchy sound that Holt has crafted, brimming with her guitar prowess and melodic finesse. As for the Star, Holt’s symbol of healing and rejuvenation, it carries a more nuanced presence on the record, emerging not within the content of the songs but in the process of creation and reflection that the record itself has allowed.

Holt says, “It’s giving voice to that part of me that was in it. It’s okay to be human…it’s a really human thing to feel that way.”

Gabby Holt was inexplicably drawn to the guitar from a very young age, finding in the instrument a home that she carried with her throughout her childhood and adolescence. She began sneaking into Portland Open Mic nights in high school, and soon immersed herself in the Portland music scene. She played in various bands before meeting Daniel Riddle and joining King Black Acid in 2012, a project which she began co-fronting in 2017.

The Star And The Devil was produced by Gabby Holt and Jeff Stuart Saltzman (Typhoon, Deertick), Mastered by Dave McNair (David Bowie, Bob Dylan) and features Joe Mengis (Eels) and Charley McGowan on drums, Sean Tichenor on bass, and Bryan Owens on additional guitar. Before 2020, Gabby Holt and her band played regularly, selling out their most recent Portland shows and opening for Oregon indie veterans Floater. The band is already working on their follow-up to The Star and the Devil.

Jeffry Martin

Jeffrey Martin of Portland, Oregon has released three albums, two of which on the independent label Fluff and Gravy Records. His latest, One Go Around, debuted in October 2017. In its review of the album, No Depression declared, “Portland singer-songwriter Jeffrey Martin has proven with his last few albums and his many shows that he truly possesses a gift for marrying Americana music and expertly penned words in an expressive way that paints a vivid picture of people, places, and events that are at once relatable and highly interesting.“

Martin has shared shows with Sean Hayes, Gregory Alan Isakov, Courtney Marie Andrews, Jeffrey Foucault, Joe Pug, Peter Mulvey, Sean Rowe, and others.

Sam Doores

“Recording in a foreign environment like Berlin, I was inspired to experiment with more cinematic, psychedelic sounds,” says Sam Doores, “but I also wanted to combine that with my love for old school New Orleans R&B and folk music. Recording this album was an opportunity to explore the space between those worlds.”

Written on-and-off over the course of several years, Doores’ captivating self-titled debut is classic and contemporary all at once, blending traditional southern roots with adventurous sonic landscapes as it reckons with heartache and loss, love and gratitude, fresh starts and, ultimately, a whole lotta change. Doores’ timeless ear for songcraft and easygoing delivery combine here to yield a sound that feels instantly familiar, full of comfort and warmth even as it breaks bold new ground. The performances are infectious in their ease, simple on the surface but built on foundations of deep emotional and harmonic complexity that belie their amiable exteriors. It’s a dynamic that Doores is quick to credit to producer Anders ‘Ormen’ Christopherson, whose chance email sparked the entire project.

While much of the album works to make sense of hard times (the eerie “Solid Road,” for instance, meditates on bad luck, and the ethereal “Red Leaf Rag” grapples with violence), the collection ultimately emerges stronger and more self-assured for the journey. The slow-burning “Push On” is an ode to community and resilience in the face of adversity, while the stripped-down “Windmills” reflects on fatherhood, alcoholism, and self-worth, and surreal album closer “Nothing Like A Suburb,” originally written for Doores’ sister’s wedding, celebrates the decision to love and commit.

“In the beginning, I thought this project was just going to be a fun way to record some songs that didn’t have a home,” Doores reflects, “but in the end, it became a really important creative outlet for me during a turbulent time in my life.”

The result is an album written as much for himself as for his audience. It’s the sound of heartbreak, of self-discovery, of rebirth. It’s the sound of Sam Doores.

w/ Arch Cape

Corrina Repp

Critically acclaimed guitarist and singer/songwriter Corrina Repp is now based in LA, but she came up in Portland, Oregon in the late ‘90s, carving out a space as she developed her sound. (A sometime actress too, she’s also known for a recurring role on Portlandia.) Her first two solo works, now out of print, came out at the tail end of that decade, with four more released in the 2000s: I Take On Your Days (2001) and It's Only the Future (2004) on Hush Records, The Absent and the Distant (2006) and The Pattern of Electricity (2015) on Caldo Verde Records. In between those, Corrina focused on the experimental indie rock band Tu Fawning, exploring and honing her skills in a quartet setting. The latter half of the 2010s brought Corrina back into the solo world with her 2015 album. She followed that up in 2018 with How A Fantasy Will Kill Us All on Jealous Butcher Records, also home to Island.

From the earliest, unknowing days of the pandemic sprang Corrina Repp’s seventh solo album Island. Resonant and resolute, the album is suffused with peaceful energy, touching on universal themes while existing as a document of Corrina’s inner life during that time. Contemplating solitude amidst isolation with openness and radiant assurance, Island seems to make the claim that to be alone is not always to be lonely. In fact, it can be empowering. For as much as these songs are marked with a melancholic touch, they are also infused with the patient optimism that can only come from years spent pursuing one’s artistic passions, devoted to a life lived on one’s own terms.

Island marks Corrina’s first time writing and recording an entire album by herself, in her own home, without an engineer or the spoils of a studio at hand. Hyper-focused due to these limits, she drew on her natural strengths of voice and guitar, resulting in songs even more markedly intimate than her previous work. The music of Island spans everything from haunting folk to exploratory guitar to cinematic pop, with Corrina’s voice and instrument taking turns sharing center stage. In Corrina’s sparse yet emotive way, Island calmly presents a score for our everyday lives that is as elegant as it is frank in both form and substance.

Arch Cape

Arch Cape is the pop song oriented experimental soundscape musical project of Portland, Oregon based visual artist and musician Rachel Blumberg, drummer/ vocalist/etc. for bands both previously and currently, such as Califone, Michael Hurley, Mirah, Tara Jane O'Neil, Norfolk & Western, Death Vessel, Laura Gibson, The Decemberists, M.Ward, and Bright Eyes. Arch Cape often performs live to Rachel's stop motion animated and film collages using drum set, found percussion, keyboards, vocals, guitars, contact mics, pedals, and other instruments.

Slow Corpse
Bite Your Tongue is the second full-length release from Slow Corpse; the indie-rock power couple, Mitchell Winters & Brenton Clarke. The album leaps effortlessly from R&B, to punk, bedroom pop, and hip-hop; showcasing a whole new sonic direction for the duo. Recorded in marathon, late-night sessions in cramped basements throughout the state of Oregon, Bite Your Tongue is a patchwork of ambivalence, hedonism, self-deprecation, confidence, heartbreak, and ultimately acceptance.

In 2019, the Slow Corpse live band went separate ways, opening up a whole new horizon for Winters & Clarke. No longer bound to writing songs for a standard, 5-piece band, they found themselves free to experiment outside of any one genre or style. While still paying homage to their roots in the Pacific Northwest indie scene, the sound is far more ambitious than their earlier work. Bite Your Tongue, finds Winter’s and Clarke at their most vulnerable; teetering between heartbreak and bravado, in and out of relationships, and longing for understanding in the mire.

Winters and Clarke wrote and produced this album in their bedrooms during the Fall & Winter of 2019 and 2020. While continuing to remain fearlessly DIY, Slow Corpse enlisted outside help in the form of Cameron Spies (Radiation City, Night Heron) to assist in the tracking, production, and mixing. The album was mixed at Trash Treasury recording studio in Portland, OR and mastered by Nuri Hobbess (The Shivas, Night Heron).

Night Heron
The record is called 'Instructions for Night.' And by the end of the first track on Night Heron’s debut, the listener knows who these instructions are for. They’re for those of us awake against our will: tossing in bed after a terrible fight, pacing the hallways of new parenthood, stricken with fear of unemployment or a bad test result. These instructions are for a person (or in the case of 2020, perhaps an entire population), so dislocated by circumstance they no longer make a meaningful distinction between night and day.

But what, exactly, are the instructions? “Stop crying / Go back to sleep” they tell us. (Sleeping Boy). They remind us that “martyrdom's been done before” (Dreamz). And lest we be tempted to seek solace in a device: we gaze into “1000 mirrors” but there is only “one reflection.” And then, with soft insistence: “No one is looking at you / No one is looking at you. / No one is looking at you.”

“Writing about music” Martin Mull observed, “is like dancing about architecture.” And so the writer tends to default to biography or anecdote. Most artists I know feel that biographical trivia cheapens their work. As for Cam Spies, he’d prefer to minimize the fact that Coronavirus affected the way these songs were recorded. And though he’s tentatively okay with my telling you about the personal events that shaped the record--the birth of a child, the unraveling of a relationship, quarantine—he can’t imagine that anyone would care. What does any of it have to do with the music?

When asked to describe himself, Whitmer Thomas—comic, musician, skateboarder, infamous Blink182 stan—will tell you, “I’m always gonna be the one whose mom called him ‘the Golden One,’ right before she died.” This is where his debut HBO comedy special, The Golden One, finds Whitmer: age thirty, investigating this sense (curse?) of destiny-as-identity. It’s been thirteen years since he left Alabama for LA, becoming a linchpin for LA’s young, independent comedy scene with Power Violence, the monthly show he hosted with friends. But he became haunted by the question: had he already peaked, just like his mom, singer in a local band with big ambitions that never made it out of the Flora-Bama Lounge in Gulf Shores? Rather than shy away from all that messy self-mythology, Whitmer tapped the source of it all through writing this one-man show featuring his own original music. Songs from The Golden One, a companion album of songs from the special, features Whitmer’s darkwave bangers, synthesizing relatable-content: millennial anxieties, therapy-speak jokes, and the annals of his own childhood tragedies.

Songs from The Golden One feature ten cuts of borderline-John Maus cosplay with spasms of pop-punk absurdity. Thomas uses the gothy, nasal vocal drone as a tool of comic detachment to cover thr funny-’cause-its-true territory of awkward sex, crippling insecurity, the shame of ambition, and the long tail of abandonment traumas. When you see it all for what it is, it looks like some sick, clever joke from the universe, driving you desperate to revise the comedy so that if you have to be reality’s punchline, at least you can write the jokes.

Original tracks from the special include the shimmering, synthy euphoria of “Eat You Out,” a glorious admission to performance anxiety and the ol’ magician’s cloak of cunnilingus move. There’s “The Codependent Enabler,” a whole jungle gym of toxic relationship rationale where “I can only get it up if you are down,” and the sadboy sobriety anthem “Partied to Death,” about when you’re young in LA and you have to tell people that you’re not *Cali sober for wellness*, but because your mom actually died from addiction, so.

At first pass, Whitmer’s special and album make a relevant, hilarious articulation of one tragic childhood, of the messiness of masculinity, of the timeless qualms of being broke with a dream in Los Angeles, and the humiliation inherent in having “a dream” at all. But in flashes of unexpected weirdo wisdom, Whitmer weaves a deeper story of a person finding reconciliation and forgiveness alongside finding his own self and voice. He faces his darkness with darkwave, writing the story of his objectively insane youth through a Venn diagram of cool guy music, goofy dude jokes, and sensitive boy reflections that hit in a way that feels bigger than the sum of its parts. Whitmer will say that he made The Golden One out of desperation, but there’s something about the show feels a lot more, instead, like destiny.

MAE.SUN, alternately known as Hailey Niswanger, is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and composer. In 2016, Niswanger started branching out from her jazz roots, and through meditation, began to channel music that was inspired by a multitude of influences and sounds. “My music started to come from a place that felt so much more than just ‘me’. I wanted to depart from my birth given name, and put music out under a new moniker. MAE is my middle name, and SUN, was chosen from inspiring words by Vietnamese Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh, who said, “The sun is our second heart…[the] great heart outside of our body.” Essentially, our universal, collective heart.” MAE.SUN’s music is mindful and eclectic, pushing boundaries and defying genres. Her music taps into the collective consciousness, serving as an engaging mediation for all. Though she can be primarily heard playing her saxophones and flute, MAE.SUN also plays clarinet, piano, and guitar. MAE.SUN’s cosmic debut album ‘Vol. 1: Inter-be’ was released in 2017, followed by ‘Vol. 2: Into The Flow’ in 2019.

Before 2016, MAE.SUN recorded 3 albums under ‘Hailey Niswanger’, and received many accolades in the jazz community; including winning first place at the Mary Lou Williams saxophone competition at age 19, charting on Billboard, plaudits from esteemed writer Nat Hentoff in the Wall Street Journal, rave reviews in JazzTimes, Jazziz, NPR, and DownBeat, as well as being listed on their critics poll for rising star on alto and soprano saxophone for the past 8 consecutive years. She has toured and performed with a number of notable artists including, Esperanza Spalding, Kenny Barron, Harvey Mason, Wolff & Clark Expedition, Mulatu Astatke, Ralph Peterson, and Terri Lyne Carrington. She also recorded flute on Carrington’s GRAMMY award winning album, The Mosaic Project. In the pop realm, she has performed with Demi Lovato, Sleigh Bells, and most recently her flute playing can be heard on Beyoncé’s ‘Black Parade’. MAE.SUN has performed at notable venues in NYC, including Music Hall of Williamsburg, National Sawdust, and Bowery Electric. MAE.SUN has also performed at the BRIC Jazz Fest, San Jose Jazz Summer Fest, and New York’s Winter Jazz Fest. She performed a live set on WBGO’s The Checkout, and most recently was the featured demo performer for Roland’s new Aerophone Pro.

A cross-pollination of numerous influences, including cabaret, spaghetti Westerns, norteño, punk, and the immigrant dance music of Eastern Europe, Colorado-based quartet DeVotchKa, formed in Denver by multi-instrumentalists Nick Urata (vocals, guitar, trumpet),

Tom Hagerman (violin, accordion), Jeanie Schroder (sousaphone, bass) and percussionist Shawn King, emerged as unlikely indie heroes in the mid-2000s infusing modern indie music with a global flavor.

They found widespread success in 2006 with their Grammy-nominated soundtrack to the hit indie film Little Miss Sunshine. Signing with revered indie, Anti-, the band delivered A Mad and Faithful Telling in early 2008, reaching the number nine slot on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. A lengthy world tour followed, including stops at major festivals like Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and Bumbershoot. After doing more soundtrack work, this time for the 2009 comedy I Love You Phillip Morris, the group returned to the studio for 2011’s moody and triumphant 100 Lovers. Embarking on another world tour, they collaborated with the Colorado Symphony on the 2012 concert album Live with the Colorado Symphony. Over the next several years, Urata became increasingly involved in his own film composition career, scoring movies like Crazy Stupid Love, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, Paddington, and the Netflix series A Series of Unfortunate Events. Meanwhile, the band regrouped for a lengthy recording session, eventually returning in 2018 with their sixth album, This Night Falls Forever, this time via Concord Records.

Ural Thomas is, and forever will be Portland's pillar of soul.

He started singing beneath his mother’s knee in church at the age of 3. By high school he led the doo-wop group the Mono Rays, breaking hearts and taking names at Jefferson High and Irvington Park along the way. Ural's voice and songwriting soon gained national attention and he found himself sharing the stage with the likes of James Brown, Otis Redding, Johnny Guitar Watson and "Little" Stevie Wonder. He played the Apollo 44 times. He backed the Northwest's biggest soul and garage outfits of the1960s (The Kingsmen, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Cavaliers Unlimited) and he never for a moment stopped teaching, singing and loving soul music..

Now Ural is poised to represent Portland on equal ground with contemporaries like Lee Fields, Sharon Jones and Charles Bradley, all of whom ultimately gained their dues in their golden years. To ensure the legacy he's backed by a 9 piece band comprised of the some of the most recognizable session and solo players in town. Band leader/drummer Scott Magee (aka DJ Cooky Parker) has arranged a setlist compiled from the gilded age of soul and R&B and Ural originals, all with a sharp focus on moving the dance floor. The foot stomping days of Jump Town, USA have returned and Ural Thomas & the Pain are here to stay
