Since 1976, the Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival, a flagship program of Banff Centre, has been an industry leader
in the celebration of Mountain Culture. We promote understanding and appreciation of the world’s mountain places by
creating opportunities for people to share and find inspiration in mountain experiences, ideas, and visions. . The Festival
showcases a selection of outstanding adventure, exploration and mountain culture speakers, films, books, and photographs
from around the world during a nine-day period each autumn in Banff, Canada. The Festival is an international, competitive
event that awards over $50,000 in prizes, both in cash and services. The festival also hosts annual workshops in adventure
filmmaking and mountain writing.
Following the nine day festival in Banff, Alberta each fall, our annual World Tour reaches more than 40 countries on 7
continents, making us the largest adventure film tour on the planet.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
In this quirky and humor-infused program, we highlight our Young Artist Winners, James Johnston and Sarah Harris.  We also welcome our area youth orchestras on stage to join us for Franz Schubert’s Overture “In the Italian Style”, a Rossini-inspired work that captures the effervescence of the lively Italian opera overture with beautiful operatic melodies and blazing finale.  The evening begins with the whimsical Little Suite from Comedy on the Bridge, an opera where all the main characters get stranded on a bridge.  The program takes a twist in Telemann’s Don Quichotte, a sort of musical novel where the over-hyped image of Cervantes’ Don Quixote has a unique take on reality.  The first sounds of Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 103 will reveal instantly why it received the nickname, “Drumroll”.  What follows is a symphony full of imagination and wit that exemplifies a grandmaster of symphonic writing over sixty years in the making.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
YAMATO is a Japanese Taiko drumming group based in Asuka-mura Nara Prefecture which is well known by Japanese people as the hometown of Japan. They call themselves “YAMATO, the Taiko drumming group that travels all over the world”. They have given more than 4,000 shows across 54 countries around the world since their formation in 1993.
 
YAMATO’s Taiko work cannot be fully described by the word “performance”.
They have performed in theaters, schools, all types of events, and even held workshops and Taiko lessons. They are spending a half year on a Japan tour and a half year for the world tour. Their motto is “We go everywhere when somebody needs YAMATO! And bringing energy to the people living in the world!”. They bring joy to the world.
 
On stage, they are standing with more than 40 Taiko drums and all of them are having different characters. For example, their largest drum called “Odaiko”, produced from a huge tree over 400 years old, is approximately two meters in diameter and weighs 500 kg. All other Taiko drums are different sizes and have different sounds. The members of the group have trained their bodies to the limit to beat these massive Taiko drums.

A part of the World Ballet Series, Cinderella is performed live by a multinational cast of 40 professional ballet dancers gathered to bring the most celebrated fairy tale to life.  

A visually stunning production accompanied by Sergei Prokofiev’s passionate celebrated score, over 150 hand-sewn radiant costumes, richly detailed hand-crafted sets and sparkling choreography by Marina Kessler.

Opening Act: The Ballroom Thieves is Calin Peters and Martin Earley. For the last decade the band has focused on an energetic and dynamic live show that features a powerful quartet of searing vocals, drums, bass, electric guitars, and more recently synths. But this winter they’re scaling things back to expose the bones of some of their most well-loved songs on an intimate duo tour.


Portland, OR-based singer, songwriter, and producer John Craigie adapts moments of solitude into stories perfectly suited for old Americana fiction anthologies. Instead of leaving them on dog-eared pages, he projects them widescreen in flashes of simmering soul and folk eloquence. On his 2022 full-length album, Mermaid Salt, we witness revenge unfurled in flames, watch a landlocked mermaid’s escape, and fall asleep under a meteor shower.

Gary Mullen & The Works (featuring Gary Mullen on vocals, David Brockett on guitar, Billy Moffat on bass, Malcolm Gentles on keyboards and Jon Halliwell on drums) will have you dancing in the aisles during their 2-hour show, while the band pays tribute to the stage theatrics, showmanship, and music of Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductees: Queen.

In 2000, Gary Mullen won the Granada TV programme “Stars in Their Eyes” with his performance as Queen’s lead singer: Freddie Mercury. Mullen’s embodiment of Freddie Mercury resulted in him gaining 864,838 votes in the show’s Live Grand Final. The number of fans who voted for Mullen was more than double that of the runner-up, thus setting an all-time record for votes in the history of the programme.

For over two decades, Gary Mullen & The Works have performed to sold-out audiences around the world, playing more than 2,500 live shows to audiences in over 20 countries around the globe.

Drawing inspiration from music from all over the world – crossing genres of classical, jazz and old-fashioned pop – and hoping to appeal to conservatives and liberals alike, he founded the “little orchestra” Pink Martini in 1994 to provide more beautiful and inclusive musical soundtracks for political fundraisers for causes such as civil rights, affordable housing, the environment, libraries, public broadcasting, education and parks.

Featuring a dozen musicians, with songs in 25 languages, Pink Martini performs its multilingual repertoire on concert stages on six continents. After making it’s European debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997 and its orchestral debut with the Oregon Symphony in 1998, the band has gone on to play with more than 50 orchestras around the world, including multiple engagements with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, the Boston Pops, the National Symphony at the Kennedy Center, the San Francisco Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, and the BBC Concert Orchestra at Royal Albert Hall in London. In 2014, Pink Martini was inducted into both the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame and the Oregon Music Hall of Fame. 

Pink Martini has released 11 studio albums on its own independent label Heinz Records (named after Lauderdale’s dog), selling over 3 million albums worldwide. In 2019, the band released two EPs featuring the vocals of Pink Martini’s newest members Jimmie Herrod and Edna Vazquez. Both vocalist have toured with the band for the past year and are officially part of the group with the release of Herrod’s EP Tomorrow and Vaquez’s Besame Mucho, both of which were co-produced by Thomas Lauderdale and China Forbes.

To capture in sound some of the iconic natural beauty of Northern California, composer Marko Bajzer was awarded Artist in Residence by Lassen Volcanic National Park and awarded a co-commision by the North State Symphony to bring his work, “Lassen Awakes!”, to life.  Acclaimed pianist Charlie Albright has been praised by the New York Times for his “jaw-dropping technique” and “virtuosity with a distinctive musicality.”  Charlie returns to the North State Symphony to be featured on Rachmaninoff’s prodigious Second Piano Concerto.  Combining luxurious melody and swelling orchestration, you will quickly learn why it is considered one of the best piano concertos ever written.  Concluding the season is Antonin Dvořák’s cheerful and life-affirming Symphony No. 8, inspired by Bohemian folk music and offering lyricism that showcases nature’s endless charms.
