Pale Blue Dot:

A band with a purpose, Pale Blue Dot writes songs about the things that truly matter. The group does not concern themselves with ego and heartache, focusing instead on the state of the world. Their songs encapsulate a sense of empathy that is both comforting and infectious, causing all who encounter them to work harder at leading more compassionate lives. The band wants to make you think as much as they make you feel, and it’s their dedication to influencing positive change that sets them apart from their peers.

Anyone who listens to Pale Blue Dot should consider themselves an explorer. The band’s catalog is an audio odyssey propelling the audience toward a deeper understanding of themselves and their place in the universe. Their creativity reflects Henry David Thoreau’s theory that music is a tether to the earliest of times and the latest, which grants us the unique gift of perspective. Being alive is about much more than the things we want, and Pale Blue Dot brings that understanding to listeners with catchy melodies backed by razor-sharp lyricism.

Jonathan Facka is a songwriter from Richmond, Virginia who has dedicated his life to creating music that tells his story . A dark story full of pain and loss. He takes inspiration from real life tragedy and other experiences he’s had. On a hunt that never ceases, as life continues on no matter how difficult things may seem at the time. He is devoted to being honest in his writing and is never afraid to spill his true feelings onto the page. The vibe of his music varies between Folk, Americana and Indie Rock. Some of his main influences include Paul Simon, Passenger, The Paper Kites, and The Tallest Man on Earth. He strives to take you on a musical journey with each song he writes, providing those who listen with their daily dose of melancholy.

Jonathan has been on many bills with Sofar Sounds and played many sold out shows on the east coast of the US. From NYC, Boston, and DC to his own hometown of Richmond Virginia. He has branched out as far as Denver Colorado with his act.

In 2017 he quit his job to pursue music, though he has been writing songs since he was very young. At age 12 he took up the clarinet in middle school. He later began learning guitar when he was a freshman in highschool.  “The time was right to venture off into a new world” he says. In 2017 he began writing for his debut album “Streetlight in the Woods”. The album was released in 2018. And now in 2020 moving into 2021 he is all set to release his second studio album “The Tarmac” on January 29th.

Since his debut album in 2018 Jonathan has been featured in many publications from his own hometown favorite RVA Magazine all the way to the national stage with his recent nod from Billboard.

The future for Jonathan is bright. With a new year approaching and new hope on the rise he plans to tour this next record. Maybe someday soon you can come see him in your own hometown.

Papa Joe - Guitar/Vocals - Other than a few odd idiosyncrasies here and there, Papa Joe is your normal every day guy. From the moment he was birthed out by Momma Slack in that creaky old cabin back in the holler, he was singing before he could even talk! His first guitar was made by his pappy and consisted of a broken broom stick glued to a shoe box and strung with binding twine. To say that music was in him from the beginning is a vast understatement!

Andy (Third Degree) Burns - Mandolin/Vocals - Andy is one of those guys you take a shine to from the moment you meet him and he grows on you the more you get to know him. Andy is not the type of friend who will bail you out of jail. No, he is the type who will be sitting next to you in the cell laughing about how great the night was and how he can't wait to do it all again the next time!

Nick (Smiley) Harlow - Banjo/Vocals - Rumor has it that Nick was born as a twin. His other half was a banjo and they have been inseparable ever since. Nick's dad used to drive him around town as a youngin' looking for jams that Nick could sit in on so he could learn those tasty chops he has refined over the years. He was playing onstage with Uncle Leroy at the age of 14 and has been playing with the Slacks for 20+ years. He is in high demand and you may see him sitting in with other local and regional bands on occasion. Somehow his facial smiling muscles got transferred to his fingers and now he does all his smiling on the banjo fretboard. It sure is something to see.

Greg (Slick) Harrup - Upright Bass/Vocals - Greg is a recovering rockabilly bassist. He has been pounding that doghouse with bands for 30 years in Richmond and throughout the East Coast. He has been with Chrome Daddy Disco and the MagBats to name just a couple. Through some intense therapy and brainwashing, we now have him in the bluegrass/Americana world and he has been playing with the Slacks now for pert near ten years. He is a song writer and singer in the band.

Lance Koehler - Drums - Every once in a while you will see the Big Slacks, which includes the Slack Family with Lance on the drums. Not only is Lance an accomplished drummer playing with one of Richmond's and the nation's favorite bands, No BS Brass Band, he is also the owner, operator, and janitor of Minimum Wage Studios in Richmond. Lance recorded the Slack Family's fourth CD, "Graceful Drifters".

Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, Woody Woodworth & The Piners are part of the newest revival of Virginia music. Established in 2016, the Piners are named for the bygone expression to Pine – a deep longing for something or someone.

Influenced by Virginia’s deep musical history and Appalachian culture, Woody Woodworth & The Piners fuse storytelling with country, bluegrass, and rock and roll to create a sound that can be described as Appalachian Alt-country with a steady shot of southern rock and roll.

like Hank Williams driving down an open highway in a ‘69 Chevelle blasting “Tuesday’s Gone…”

Woodworth’s down-home stage presence and honest vocals are backed by a no holds bar honky-tonk twang, lonesome harmonica, sawing fiddle, and driving rhythm section that draws you in and leaves you longing for a time not forgotten.

Woodworth, a Virginia native, was born and raised in working-class family where music was an integral part of daily life. At an early age, he was introduced to the sounds of Dolly Parton, George Jones, Merle Haggard, Wayland Jennings, and Johnny Cash through his beloved grandparent’s obsession with the Grand Ole Opry and country music.

Woodworth became intrigued by regional tales woven into the music, and started writing his own songs at the age of twelve. His mother, a self-proclaimed “southern-rock-hippie," educated him on sounds from the late 60’s and early 70’s and introduced him to the best of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Charlie Daniels, The Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker Band, and Lynyrd Skynyrd among many others.

As a songwriter, Woodworth embodies the heart of Appalachia with his haunting melodies and tales of love, loss, and the American spirit. Woodworth writes songs of the blue-collar working class that are easy on the ears and heavy on the heart.

Woody Woodworth & The Piners released two singles in 2020, Cherokee Maggie and Long Way Down, and a full-length live album titled Live at Richmond Music Hall. The band is set to release its second studio album in 2021.

Giles McConkey is a funk and alternative rock jam band from Blacksburg, VA. After meeting freshman year of college in 2012, living in the same dorm, they quickly discovered their musical interests coincided and they began casually playing together. Over the two years that followed, the group got serious and began gigging at the local bars in Blacksburg. Stunning their fan base with funky jams and uplifting melodies, the band quickly gathered a local following.

During the summer of 2015, Giles McConkey recorded and released their first EP titled “The Inner Ear Sessions” which featured 5 originally written tracks. The band also played at the Untitled Music Festival in New Castle, VA that summer. That fall, the band expanded their range to Richmond, VA when it played a set at The National. For the future, the band hopes to expand their influence to other cities throughout the east coast, record their first full-length album and expand their sound and song repertoire.

Live Video: “Crossing County Lines”

The Dirty Grass Players, a four-piece new-grass band from Baltimore, is known for having one toe-tappin’ foot in traditional bluegrass while pushing boundaries with their blazing musicianship. Composed of Connor Murray on bass, Alex Berman on vocals & banjo, Ben Kolakowski with the guitar & vocals, and Ryan Rogers on mandolin, they have been bringing their growing fanbase a down and dirty performance for over five years.

Their ability to seamlessly transition from down-home bluegrass to spirited improvisation makes each performance unique. Mix in some Allman Brothers, Pink Floyd or a dash of southern rock and you’ll quickly understand what they mean by “Dirty Grass”.

Entering into their seventh year together, The Dirty Grass Players just released their 2nd studio album, “Beneath the Woodpile”. Put together with alluring harmonies, lyrics, and melodies, the band presents a sound precisely at the crossroads of traditional and progressive bluegrass. This isn’t just another run-of-the-mill bluegrass album or band; it’s cathartic and dirty grass.

For the past several years, Netflix subscribers have been raving about Satan & Adam (2018), an award-winning documentary that tracks the unlikely, decades-long partnership between Sterling “Mr. Satan” Magee, a Mississippi-born bluesman and prophet, and Adam Gussow, a younger white harmonica ace.  Joining forces on the streets of Harlem in the 1980s, riding out the racial turmoil of that era—murders in Howard Beach and Bensonhurst, Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing--Gussow and Magee end up becoming a national touring act and Living Blues cover story.  The duo falls apart after Magee’s 1998 breakdown, then reunites in a late-life comeback story that leaves viewers profoundly moved.

Magee’s nephew Rod Patterson, aka “Sir Rod,” was one of those viewers.  An Atlanta-area singer, dancer, and motivational speaker, he contacted Gussow in December 2019 with a proposition:  Why don’t we team up and keep my uncle’s music—and your music, the Satan & Adam songbook—alive?  (Magee, it turned out, had lived with Patterson’s family down in Florida only a couple of years before Gussow hooked up with him in Harlem; the two younger men had both been mentored into the blues by the same master musician.)

The result of that conversation was a debut album, an exciting new act, and an explosion of creativity and brotherhood that can’t be denied.

Featuring Patterson up front, Gussow on amplified harmonica and drums, and Alan Gross on electric guitar, Sir Rod & The Blues Doctors offer a powerful mix of down-home blues, old-school soul, and uptown funk.  Come Together, released in the summer of 2020, highlights Satan & Adam favorites, including "I Want You," "Sanctified Blues," and "Seventh Avenue," stirred together with "What'd I Say," "I Feel Good," "Little Red Rooster," plus the catchy jam-band single, “Come Together,” a Gussow-Patterson original that speaks prophetically to the COVID-19 crisis and the virus of racism.

Come Together also features a remake of “Freedom For My People,” the powerful anthem that was excerpted on U2’s multi-platinum album Rattle & Hum (1988). A composition of Magee's that preaches hope and yearns for justice, it’s a showcase for Sir Rod's soulful vocals.  "So Mean," another Patterson original, is an aching slow blues--just the singer and his keyboard, crying out to the woman he loves, with Gussow seconding the feeling on acoustic harp.
