There is only one Sam Bush. The Americana Music Association awarded Bush the Lifetime Achievement Award as an Instrumentalist. Punch Brothers, Steep Canyon Rangers, and Greensky Bluegrass are just a few present-day bluegrass vanguards among so many musicians he has influenced. His performances are annual highlights of the festival circuit, with Bush's joyous perennial appearances at the town's famed bluegrass fest earning him the title, "King of Telluride."

The Gathering is as lively and eclectic as any good family Christmas gathering! The holiday concert features Laurelyn Dossett, April Verch, Joe Newberry and Mike Compton. With inspiring vocal harmonies and virtuoso instrumentals, The Gathering breathes new life into traditional Christmas music and introduces fresh new songs of the season.

"It's what the holidays were before shopping and Irving Berlin." Wall Street Journal

About the band:

Known around the world for his clawhammer banjo playing, Joe Newberry is also a powerful guitarist, singer and songwriter. A longtime and frequent guest on A Prairie Home Companion, he sang with the 2016 Transatlantic Sessions, and at the Transatlantic Session's debut at Merlefest in 2017. The Gibson Brothers' version of his song "Singing As We Rise" won the 2012 IBMA "Gospel Recorded Performance" Award, and he shared the 2013 IBMA "Song of the Year" Award for "They Called It Music" with Eric Gibson.

While April Verch is perhaps best known for playing fiddle styles from her native Ottawa Valley, Canada, her performances extend into old-time American, classic country, Scandinavian styles and beyond, for a well-rounded tour-de-force of traditional sounds. While her fiddle playing is of the "astounding" variety, it's her multiple artistic talents that allow her to come at her audiences from so many different directions and points of inspiration. Combine that instrumental prowess with soulful singing and stunning stepdancing, and the result is an artist who is basically a force of nature.

Grammy and IBMA award-winning mandolinist, singer, and recording artist Mike Compton has earned "a worldwide reputation as one of the modern masters of bluegrass mandolin...one of the most recognizable and respected mandolin voices anywhere" (Mandolin Magazine). He toured with John Hartford, Nashville Bluegrass Band, and was featured in the soundtracks for, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" and "Cold Mountain". Wearing his signature pressed blue overalls and rocking and weaving with fluid body motion, Compton stuns not by tricks, but through singing, crowd engagement, and a technique which was honed over decades into a mandolin sound unique to him.

Singer/songwriter Laurelyn Dossett lives and writes in the piedmont of North Carolina, and her songs tend to reflect the stories of the region, both traditional and contemporary. Her work has appeared in film and television, and has been recorded by Grammy-winning artists such as Levon Helm and Rhiannon Giddens of the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Dossett has partnered with Triad Stage's Preston Lane on six plays, which feature regional folklore and original music. Her song cycle, The Gathering: A Winter's Tale in Six Songs, was commissioned by and premiered with the North Carolina Symphony in November 2011.

Joe Shannon's Mountain Home Music presents

Celtic Christmas

with John Doyle, Mick McAuley and Duncan Wickel

John Doyle and Mick McAuley's nearly telepathic musical connection began in the truly groundbreaking Irish-American band, Solas. Now, both have flourishing high profile solo careers and periodically come together to brush off some Solas standards and lots of their individual material, played together, for these magical musical offerings. Both natives of Ireland and each from musical families, John Doyle and Mick McAuley are true powerhouses in traditional Irish music. Joining them is the amazing Irish fiddler and Jazz violinist, Duncan Wickel. He and John have also toured together over the years and this threesome has all the ingredients for a spectacular night of Irish music.
