The House You Grew Up In
The House You Grew Up In, abbreviated THYGUI, is a 5 piece psychedelic pop-rock band from Washington DC. THYGUI blends the sound and feel of late-60s-era psychedelic rock with the abstract lyricism and flippancy of indie bands of the 90s and 2000s like Pavement and The Unicorns. In recent years, THYGUI's sound has begun to include more churning basslines and dreamy melodies reminiscent of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Beck, and The B-52s.
Formed in 2010 as the solo project of Jordan Brown, the band's songwriter, lead singer and guitarist, THYGUI changed size and composition several times before settling into its current line up. Drummer Raymond O'Mara and guitarist Damon Effingham joined Brown in 2014 and were joined shortly after in 2015 by their childhood friend and bass player, James Howard. Cait Hone joined THYGUI as an additional vocalist in early 2019.

Touch The Buffalo
Touch the Buffalo is a 4 piece rock band, born in Arlington VA in January 2017.

Horse Feathers feels like a secret you don't really want to share. Over twelve years and five albums, a passionate fan base has experienced this band as a precious commodity that they want to keep close to their hearts. One reason for this can be found in lead singer Justin Ringle's distinctive voice, at once vulnerable and piercing, and in the quality of the music: gorgeous, lush string arrangements surrounding stark, visceral lyrics whose bite makes a piquant juxtaposition to the surrounding beauty.

Now, however, Horse Feathers has created an album that differs enough from its predecessors to suggest that the cat might get out of the bag. On Appreciation, their sixth full-length and the fifth on venerable independent label Kill Rock Stars, the signifiers of the band are there: Ringle's warm tenor and lyrics that speak of work, love, and other struggles. But on this album less of the song dynamics are achieved with strings and more with an exciting new rhythm section steeped in Northern Soul. Longtime violinist Nathan Crockett and keyboardist Dustin Dybvig provide continuity, but much of Appreciation feels like the best of Ringle's previous musical ideas just took a giant step into a larger arena.

Recorded primarily in Kentucky (at La-La Land Studios in Louisville and Shangri-La Studios in Lexington), the new album features instrumentalists J. Tom Hnatow, Robby Cosenza and R&B vocalist Joslyn Hampton, who helped make Appreciation a mixture of strutting '70s-style country-pop ("Without Applause," "Don't Mean To Pry") and supple soul ("Best To Leave," "Evictions"). But Horse Feathers hasn't gained accessibility at the expense of quality, nor at the expense of their signature instrumentation ("The Hex" might be the only R&B/soul song where the rhythmic lead is played on banjo). For those who crave what NPR called "the densely pretty seethe of Horse Feathers' earlier ballads", the album delivers "Born in Love" and "On the Rise", accentuating the string surge with Hammond organ, piano, tambourine, and finger snaps.

Legendary Shack Shakers
The Legendary Shack Shakers' hell-for-leather roadshow has earned quite a name for itself with its unique brand of Southern Gothic that is all-at-once irreverent, revisionist, dangerous, and fun. Led by their charismatic, rail-thin frontman and blues-harpist JD Wilkes, the Shack Shakers are a four-man wrecking crew from the South whose explosive interpretations of the blues, punk, rock and country have made fans, critics and legions of potential converts into true believers.

After taking more than a year off to work on other projects (including JD Wilkes's book "Barn Dances & Jamborees Across Kentucky"), the band is re-mobilizing in the fall of 2014 much to the excitement of many a Shack Shaker fanatic. Despite the group's time off, their reputation for intensity has stuck with them. On stage, JD has been compared to the likes of Iggy Pop, David Byrne, and Jerry Lee Lewis. The Nashville Scene named Wilkes "the best frontman in Nashville" in 2002, while former Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra has called JD "the last great Rock and Roll frontman." Having joined the band in early 2012, garage blues guitar player Rod Hamdallah--who also lends his prowess to Wilkes's side project 'JD Wilkes and the Dirt Daubers'--is back in the Shack Shakers' lineup. The rhythm section is rounded out with Brett Whitacre on drums and Mark Robertson thumping out the upright bass.

Although not legendary upon being named, the band has grown into its reputation the last several years due to their heavy tour schedule, six critically acclaimed studio albums, and songs that have been featured on television shows such as HBO's True Blood. Past tour mates and fans include Reverend Horton Heat, Rancid, The Black Keys, Slim Cessna's Auto Club, and Hank Williams III. Robert Plant is also a noted Legendary Shack Shakers fan, and picked the band to open for him on his 2005 tour of Europe. Plant named the band's third album Believe as one of his favorite records of 2005. The list of esteemed admirers goes on to include horror novelist Stephen King, who listed "CB Song" as among his iPod's Top Five in a 2008 Entertainment Weekly article. Such a wealth of devoted fans over the years has only added to the mystique that the Legendary Shack Shakers possess, carrying them down the road toward new creative pursuits and barn-shaking tunes.

Dylan LeBlanc is engaging and soft-spoken in person, yet his striking new album Renegade reflects the power of his live show - one that he simply describes as rock 'n' roll. While the album was recorded in just 10 days and tracked in three, the intensity of the project marks the culmination of more than a decade on the road.
"I like the idea of a renegade - branching off from society or from the structure of the way our world is designed," he says of Renegade, his first album for ATO Records. "It felt right to call it that. I wanted to write about the crueler, nasty aspects of the world and life."
LeBlanc's observations are woven through Renegade, though he's more interested in telling the story than judging the characters for their decisions. The title track, he says, is "about troubled cocky young men charming young women who were intrigued by that way of life, only for it to end in tragedy. I saw this countless times growing up." Later he writes about his personal efforts to become a stronger person in "Born Again," after a childhood of being bullied for his long hair and an adolescence marked by insecurity, fear, and anger.
LeBlanc considers the new album a departure from his past work, but only because there's more of an edge to these sessions, recorded with Grammy-winning producer Dave Cobb in Nashville's Studio A. This time around, LeBlanc primarily stayed plugged in for the sessions, giving Renegade a Tom Petty feel, charged with a streak of '80s rock. "I never really played electric guitar live in the studio like that," he says. "I'm so used to the rhythmic, acoustic thing. It was just like playing in a show."

The Lagoons
The L.A.-raised brother duo have carved out a fresh genre of indie-pop that breathes life into today's music scene. The Lagoons, comprised of Ryan and Joey Selan, found music at a young age. Their love for music evolved to writing, producing, and recording all of their own music in their home studio and have become multi-instrumentalists along the way.
The production duo's unique blend of genres was first heard on their debut single "California" and was followed up by "Gems EP" & "Escape EP". "California" has roughly 40 million streams on Spotify alone. Chances are you've heard this beachy, swoon-worthy track - that was also synced in Netflix's series "Easy," placed in a BMW ad with Kate Upton, and played across Bose stores worldwide.
Their most recent singles "Milagro", "Give It Up For Love" and "Love To Love You have received rave reviews from tastemakers and fans. In addition to being added to numerous Spotify playlists including "New Music Friday", NPR has included The Lagoons in their Heavy Roation for '10 Songs Public Radio Can't Stop Playing' and NPR's radio station KUTX featured the latter two tracks as "Song of The Day". The duo will be releasing their upcoming album Spring 2020.
The Lagoons have headlined two national tours to date alongside Tim Atlas and Future Generations. They will be showcasing their never-seen-before 2-man intimate acoustic set featuring acoustic guitar, keyboard, saxophone, and vocals.

In music, there's often a tendency to focus on personal pain. It's a useful shorthand for understanding how an artist got to where they are now, but sometimes that heaviness doesn't leave enough room for nuance and change. In his solo work, the Indiana musician Kevin Krauter doesn't flinch when staring down his past, but he doesn't get too obsessed with the dark stuff either.

In 2018, Krauter released Toss Up, a quiet album that was built on intricate guitar riffs that looped back on themselves to create a feeling of sunlit calm. Krauter's sophomore follow up, Full Hand, dives further into the world he's created - one where songs are evocative of late afternoon light, or dust settling on a creaky floorboard, but with lyrics that probe Krauter's personal life, grappling with sexuality and religion, while exploring what it means to grow up, grow more critical, and, in turn, more self-confident.

Across 12 tracks, Krauter tackles these emotional states and ideas through elliptical songwriting that is at once poetic and truthful. "A lot of the lyrics touch on how I was raised religiously, touch on me understanding my sexuality more and more in recent years," Krauter says, "just growing up and becoming more confident in myself...that process of looking inward and taking stock of myself." It's not especially uncommon for artists to probe deep into their own psyche to uncover what makes them tic, but Krauter's light touch feels like something all his own. On Full Hand's first single, "Pretty Boy," he sings, "Look ahead, say I see me now / Smiling at what used to stress me out / Cause it won't be too long, but I'll take my time with it / It won't be too long till I come back home." There's a palpable sense of joy in Krauter's acceptance of dire, stressful moments, and a liberation that comes from hearing him realize that the present will eventually be the past, and he'll be able to look back and find peace.

This sense of acceptance is the backbone of Full Hand, both musically and lyrically. Krauter took stock of the different phases of his life - what he was listening to, how he felt when he was a teenager - and welcomed all of it into his music. This meant that nothing was off-limits. All influences were fair game - from early-'00s emo to late '90s radio rock - and his entire history, instead of becoming something to be ignored or pushed aside, became part of the patchwork of his music. "It's nice to recognize that the instinct is there in me and all I have to do is say yes or no."

Around the release of Toss Up, Krauter shed light on his dominant artistic impulse toward overwhelmingly nice sounds that weave throughout lyrical meditations on personal growth. His vocal lilt on "Opportunity" is so warm, so effortlessly pretty, that you'll almost miss moments of harsh truth like "Wake up to a morning so listless / come to, sun is looming in." By the end of the song, Krauter is alone, left behind, looking at his life and wondering what he's supposed to do next. "It's an easy fallback to be self-deprecating or defeatist in whatever I was I writing," he says. "It was a challenge to myself to see how I could flip it the other way but also be real about it. I don't want to make some sugary, feelgood, all payoff thing because that's not what my life is like."

Over the last few years, THE SCHIZOPHONICS have built up a formidable reputation around the world as an explosive live act. Tapping into the same unstoppable combination of rock 'n' roll energy and showmanship that fueled THE MC5 in the heyday of the Grande Ballroom, their wild live show is heavily influenced by artists like JAMES BROWN, IGGY POP, JIMI HENDRIX, LITTLE RICHARD, and THE SONICS. Singer/guitarist Pat Beers and drummer Lety Beers formed the band in San Diego in 2009 and have worked tirelessly since then, playing hundreds of shows around the globe and winning 7 San Diego music awards. In 2013 they were recruited as the backing/opening band for EL VEZ, which helped the band make a name for itself in Europe. Since then, they've played in fourteen countries, and supported tours by like-minded acts like ROCKET FROM THE CRYPT, LITTLE BARRIE, and THE WOGGLES and have opened for the DAMNED, HIVES and CAGE THE ELEPHANT. Shindig magazine described their live show "Like watching some insane hybrid of WAYNE KRAMER, JAMES BROWN, and the Tazmanian Devil". "One of my favorite live bands ever!" proclaims Tim Mays, who has run the Casbah in San Diego for 30 years and has seen literally thousands of live bands come through his doors. "The Schizophonics bring the goods every time they play," he enthuses.

The band is more than just an outstanding live act, they're also committed to writing great, memorable songs. After releasing 2 singles and an EP over the last few years on Munster, Ugly Things, and Pig Baby Records, they put out their first full-length album in July 2017 titled Land Of The Living on the label Sympathy For The Record Industry with famed record man Long Gone John. In January of 2019 they started work on their 2nd LP recruiting Dave Gardner (Hot Snakes, RFTC) mixing engineer Stephen Kaye ( JD McPherson, Mike Krol) and Pierre De Reeder (Rilo Kiley) to put their live, raw sound to tape. The album titled People in the Sky will be released on October 31st, 2019 on Pig Baby Records.

Pop on Floor It!!!, the new and second full-length effort from the Texas Gentlemen, and prepare your eardrums to be hit with everything from woozy, brass-fueled Dixieland-style jazz ("Veal Cutlass"), to slinky, chicken-scratch country funk ("Bare Maximum") to lushly orchestrated pop-soul balladry ("Ain't Nothin' New")-and that's all in just the first 10 minutes of play time.

While the Gentlemen's sound is clearly steeped in the classic roots, rock and pop music of the '60s and '70s, there's a dreamy (the lilting "Sing Me to Sleep"), spacey ("Skyway Streetcar") and occasionally progressive ("Dark at the End of the Tunnel") element to what they do that seems to detach the music from belonging to any particular place and time. Add in elements of funk, soul, country, r&b, southern rock, gospel and essentially any other style that catches their musically omnivorous ears; an expansive and detailed approach to arrangement that sees the songs adorned with all manner of horns, strings and heavenly background vocals ("Hard Road") and you have a collection of tunes that is more than just a mere album. Rather, Floor It!!! is a rich and righteous ride.
