The Ladies of...featuring James Hall
Birmingham Stages called The Ladies Of... a "Southern Supergroup," and it's true: when Jim Troglen (previously the guitarist for Birmingham outfit The Autumn Lords) founded this band in 2011, he assembled an impressive lineup of musicians who will be well-familiar to anyone who's followed the region's rock scene during the past 30 years. The core members are based out of Atlanta or Birmingham: vocalist/guitarist James Hall (Mary My Hope; Pleasure Club), bassist James Wahl (Promise the Ghost; Stone Cobra), and former Storm Orphans guitarist Mark Patrick and drummer Jack Massey, along with Brooklyn-based vocalist Jaz Jillette, while guitarist Sam Smithwick (Spunkadilly; Smithwick Machine) and bassist Roman Glick (Jackyl; Brother Cain) have also contributed songwriting or performing duties.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Andy Cabic's musical being is, like many curious 21st century musicians, shaped and sustained by divergent tangents. If he's not crafting a melancholy folk rock diamond in his Northern California studio, he's moving a dance floor with bossa nova and house DJ sets, or helping curate a compilation of Japanese City Pop.

What's magic about this new Vetiver LP Up On High is the way these tangents color the ten songs without undermining a distinct move to more elemental, spacious and natural arrangements. At the heart of each of these ten songs is Cabic's voice: sweet, tender and weathered - a welcome and soothing old friend if ever there was one. There are other familiar friends: the album also features longtime engineer and collaborator Thom Monahan and the same resourceful and versatile band that helped Cabic make the more dense and layered Complete Strangers from 2015.

Up On High was written on acoustic guitar. Having moved twice since Complete Strangers, increasingly accustomed to a life in and out of boxes, it was the easiest
instrument to reach for in moments of inspiration. The basic tracking of the album took place over a few Spring days at a friend's house in the high desert of California. This simple set - up captured the organic immediacy of a roomful of friends playing together on the floor. It's alive and ever so subtly crackling with the intensity of a band working together, teasing out the melody and rhythms of songs with warmth and intimacy. Cabic and Monahan took the fruits of this session to Los Angeles and finished the album at Monahan's studio over the summer as other friends popped by to lend their talents.

This album reflects the world that Cabic created and lives in: Jorge Ben phrasings peek out from behind Tom Petty's Wildflowers outtakes, a gentle jangle lifts whispers of REM's Murmur on a breeze up from Compass Point Studios. But Up On High is most clearly Cabic and his band inhabiting the realm the band was born in - sleek, economical, soulful, and sometimes sadness - tinged melodies riding on the gentle choogle and sway of an ensemble moving in beautiful unison. This is an album that breathes with you in real, lived in, natural time.

Jon Latham

Growing up in the shadow of Atlanta, Jon Latham took in all the elements of his suburban existence while being raised i a home with a broad, eclectic musical pallet. Years of cutting teeth in bars, coffee shops, and open mics opened the door for his relocation to Nashville in 2013, where he began crafting the experience of his past into songs. His first album, Real Bad News, was met with surprising critical acclaim, even making the Bitter Southerners Year-end list of best albums of 2015. His sophomore release, Lifers, followed in 2017, released on local label Cafe Rooster Records. Jon's live performances have cemented his reputation as a promising new face in the flourishing East Nashville music community, and Rolling Stone even featured him as a "New country artist you need to know".
Wild Ponies

Wild Ponies offer dead right, honest songwriting delivered in a hauntingly beautiful yet gritty, neo-traditional Americana wrapper. Their newest release Galax salutes Wild Ponies' traditional roots while exploring new, progressive territory. It's an album about the pieces of our past that stick with us, informing our present while pushing us toward a future. An album that redefines Wild Ponies' sound, while highlighting influences that have always rested just beneath the surface.

"We'll always be the pinball that bounces between folk, rock & roll and country," says Telisha, "and this Old-Time style will always weave its way through everything we do. It's been there from the start, even on the loudest songs we've made. It only took us a couple of days to record it, but this is the album we've been making our whole lives. We just needed the right people and the right songs to finish it."

The WorkPlay Theatre was built to make the audience leave saying WOW! WorkPlay has been bringing the most incredible shows to Birmingham for over 15 years. Simply put, it has superb sounding acoustics. Much thought went into everything from the construction of the room, to the dimples in the walls, to the metal railings making the acoustics sound amazing! There is not a bad seat in this listening mecca! The room seats a total of 325 people with a capacity of 450 standing and seated. The theater is primarily a General Admission room, but does offer limited seating and tables. Due to the demand for seating, we have a table reservation program for those who wish to guarantee they have a seat at a show. Sometimes, when you arrive there may be some tables available at a first come, first serve basis, but they go VERY quickly, be sure to guarantee that you have your seat and table in advance of the show. Please contact Bryan for more information - bryan@workplay.com.
