PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Synergy ProDuXions presents:

Queer Eye for the Magi, a Holiday Cabaret with Dru and Friends.

A show many have called their “favorite queer holiday tradition,” Queer Eye for the Magi returns on December 29th!

This year Dru invites some of Portland’s best queer entertainers to join the show. Jimmy Wilcox comes back from Los Angeles and we’re thrilled to share the stage with America’s Got Talent finalist, the incredible Jimmie Herrod of Pink Martini.

They’ll be joined by the sensational drag pianist Saint Syndrome, the lowest bass with the smallest waist and comedian Arlo, voted Portland’s Funniest Person. Plus special guest Nana Tuckit is back for more fun!

Bringing a touch of class and a dose of crass, they will delight you with their amazing voices and ridiculous spin on the holiday season! This show has something for everyone, especially if you think the holidays are a drag. From sublime standards and delicious duets, to very uncensored surprises – you’ve never heard the holidays like this before. Our naughty carols put the X in Xmas!

Queer Eye for the Magi is the perfect way to be merry and gay on the last week of the year!

This is a show for adults, but minors can attend if accompanied by parent or guardian.

The Alberta Rose is handicap accessible.

Deb Talan has been writing songs since she was 14 years old. Granted, her style has changed a bit since writing the forever-unknown smash-hit “Through the Window” about feeling numb, like life was going on somewhere out there but not accessible to her (at 14. so jaded.) She played clarinet, wrote songs on piano, later taught herself to play guitar in college, got obsessed with Shawn Colvin, was a vegetarian for 4 years, ended that with a hotdog and a swim in lake Michigan, started a band in Portland, OR with her friend Mark, named it Hummingfish, wrote a lot of fun songs that people danced to ‘til they were all sweaty in that hipster/grungy/geeky Northwest kind of way, moved back to the east coast 6 years and a divorce later and began playing solo in Boston coffee houses (read: 4 different Starbucks that she also poured espresso at) opened shows for Catie Curtis (a songwriter hero of hers) met up with Steve Tannen and formed The Weepies, played shows all over the country and the world, toured in a real tour bus! moved to LA, got married to Steve, made 5 records and 3 amazing boy-children together with him, had songs placed in loads of movies and tv shows, moved to Iowa, got breast cancer, got chemotherapy and relied heavily on marijuana for pain and nausea relief (Legalize, for gods’ sakes, can we grow up as a country, please?) recovered from breast cancer, made a solo album, struggled with mental health issues (Childhood Incest Survivor, lucky to be alive, music has helped, and so have many blessed healers) and relationship issues for 6 years, got divorced from Steve. She has a lot she could say these days. She prefers to listen. But playing songs for people is a close second. Music heals. Songs can be prayers.

Deb Talan is some lovely damn proof of that.

~More About Red Bird~

Red Bird is a wildly soulful band that communicates through powerhouse vocals and mind-bending guitar features. Their sound has been described as “unabashedly soulful with elements of blues and roots” by Vortex Magazine, and Good Day Oregon compares them to an impressive list of artists including Bonnie Raitt and Joss Stone.

Bre Gregg (vocals) and guitarist, Dan Gildea have written songs and performed together for many years, which has melded them together musically and allowed them to share the lead on-stage in a way that is both powerful and organic. Backed by groove masters Jeff Langston on bass and Edwin Coleman III on drums, Red Bird has a sound you can’t help but feel.

Their new album, Live It All, is their first full-length album, which they made with the help of engineer Justin Phelps (Cake, The Mars Volta) and The Hallowed Halls in Portland, Oregon. The album features the keys work of Steve Swatkins (Allen Stone, Excellent Gentleman and Steve Swatkins and the Positive Agenda) and Sydney Nash (TK & The Holy Know-Nothings) giving the band’s sound a fresh new life they are excited to release into the world.

~More About The Colin Trio~

Less of a trio and more of a triple-headed hydra roving through an alluring array of genre-blending styles, The Colin Trio is anything but typical. Named after lead singer, guitarist, pianist, Colin Hogan, listeners would be hard-pressed to name any specific member of the trio as lead.

Whether it’s Colin’s knack for slipping in and out of musical eras, or bassist Brian Link’s adeptness with any groove, or drummer Cheo Larcombe’s ability to start at the flick of a match. Watching The Colin Trio perform live is akin to three improvisational masters besting one another at every turn between a cavalcade of rock, soul, jazz, funk and the blues.

Working with producer Tim Karplus, their upcoming single, Breakable explores new sounds and a different approach to building a song.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

When Matt Andersen steps on stage, he brings a lifetime of music to every note he plays. His presence is informed by decades of cutting his teeth in dusty clubs, dim-lit bars, and grand theatres all over the world, delivering soulful performances that run the gamut from intimate to wall-shaking. In the studio, he’s always brought the same attention to detail and commitment to craft as he has to his live show, and the result - a multi-faceted and poignant body of work - has led him to amass over 18 million streams on Spotify and 18 million views on YouTube.

In addition to headlining major festivals, clubs and theatres throughout North
America, Europe and Australia, he has shared the stage and toured with Marcus King, Beth Hart, Marty Stuart, Greg Allman, Tedeschi Trucks Band,  Randy Bachman, Jonny Lang, Serena Ryder, and more.

Mariel Buckley spent most of her youth playing hockey, getting into trouble and writing it all down. After dabbling in guitar for near a decade, she took up some bar gigs, playing mostly traditional country music. Buckley began writing original music in her early twenties and found a natural comfort in speaking her mind through song. After several years of honing her craft on and off the stage, she began seeing larger support slots –k.d. Lang notably saying: “this kid has a big future.”

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

Everything in Jon McLaughlin’s life makes its way into his music, whether he’s conscious of it or not. The artist, raised in Indiana and based in Nashville, brings all of his experiences and beliefs into each song he creates, something that is especially true now that he’s the father of two young girls.

Jon released his debut album, Indiana, in 2007 on Island Def Jam, attracting fans with his heartfelt, hook-laden songwriting and impassioned delivery. He’s released six full-lengths in the years since and revealed a true evolution in both his piano playing and singing. He’s played shows with Billy Joel, Kelly Clarkson and Adele, collaborated with longtime friend Sara Bareilles, co-written with Demi Lovato and even performed at the Academy Awards in 2008.

Jon’s album, Like Us, dropped in October of 2015 via Razor & Tie, and he spent the past few years touring extensively before heading back into his Nashville studio to work on new music. Jon released a Christmas EP in 2017 titled Red & Green with two originals and his take on a few holiday classics. In November of 2018 Jon released his album Angst & Grace which features “Still My Girl” written for his youngest daughter.

Another project started in 2018 is his Dueling Pianos video series. Every episode features a new guest artist and they perform mashups of never been heard arrangements.

Named for an ancient Celtic harvest festival in honor of the Irish god Lugh, patron of the arts, Lúnasa is indeed a gathering of some of the top musical talents in Ireland. Its members have helped form the backbone of some of the greatest Irish groups of the decade.

Bassist Trevor Hutchinson was a key member of The Waterboys, and later he, with guitarist Donogh Hennessy, would form the dynamic rhythm section of The Sharon Shannon Band; Ed Boyd (Flook, Michael McGoldrick Band) has recently replaced Hennessy; Fiddler Sean Smyth is an All-Ireland champion who has played with Donal Lunny’s Coolfin; Kevin Crawford, considered to be among the finest flutists in Ireland played with the acclaimed traditional group Moving Cloud; and, piper Cillian Vallely of the famous Vallely artistic clan has performed with Riverdance and recently recorded with Bruce Springsteen. Folk Roots magazine has rightly termed them an “Irish music dream team.”

Cruise the city in a night ship, dressed to kill in the Seville. Float down waterfalls and fountains, reclined on some pimp shit. The time zone ghost returns to paint a picture that echoes through infinity. The sun is put to rest, the soliloquy is killer bee. A diamond purpose lying beneath the surface. Nothing is ever what it seems, but forever is the theme. It’s time. Shabazz Palaces are back with yet another classic of divine mathematics design. More dazzling Afrofuturist sutras to illuminate distant constellations with sacred abstractions. Enter The Don of Diamond Dreams, raw and uncut, but glowing with 10,000 karat shine.

If you adhere to the corporeal limitations of space and chronology, it’s been roughly a decade since Shabazz Palaces first shook the ramparts with their debut stylistic revolution, Black Up – which Pitchfork named as one of the Best of the 2010s, hailing it as an “album of impossible vision.” But the project masterminded by vocalist and producer Ishmael Butler has never conformed to gravitational consideration or terrestrial measurement. They are heirs to the astral imagination of Sun Ra and George Clinton, Octavia Butler and Alice Coltrane. If they technically claim residence in Seattle, their sound emanates much closer to Alpha Centauri than Alki Beach.

About Our Guest

Kiese Laymon is the author of the award-winning memoir Heavy, the groundbreaking essay collection How to Slowly Kill Yourself and Others in America, and the genre-defying novel Long Division.

Laymon’s IndieBound bestselling memoir, Heavy: An American Memoir, won the 2019 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction, the 2018 Christopher Isherwood Prize for Autobiographical Prose, the Austen Riggs Erikson Prize for Excellence in Mental Health Media, and was named one of the 50 Best Memoirs of the Past 50 Years by The New York Times.  A personal narrative that illuminates national failures, Heavy is defiant yet vulnerable—an insightful, often comical exploration of weight, identity, art, friendship, and family.

When Laymon was a contributing editor at Gawker, he wrote an essay called “How to Slowly Kill Yourself and Others in America.” This harrowing piece, which describes four incidents in which Laymon was threatened with a gun, evolved into a collection of lacerating essays on race, violence, celebrity, family, and creativity.

In Laymon’s novel, the NAACP Image Award-winning Long Division, 14-year-old City, a newly minted YouTube star, is sent to stay with family in rural Melahatchie, Mississippi. What happens next transgresses the boundaries of fiction and reality, present and past, as City travels through time.

Laymon founded the Catherine Coleman Initiative for the Arts and Social Justice, a program aimed at getting Mississippi kids and their parents more comfortable reading, writing, revising and sharing. He is the Libby Shearn Moody Professor of English and Creative Writing at Rice University.

Located in the heart of the eclectic Alberta Arts District, the Alberta Rose originally opened as a motion picture house in 1927 and showed films until it closed in 1978. The theatre has 300 fixed seats and radiates the serene feeling of a Spanish-Colonial courtyard. The Alberta Rose is a mid-size, seated listening room where the audience can enjoy excellent lines of sight, outstanding acoustics and where every seat feels close to the stage and the artist.
