    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

NATIONAL GUITAR is a Paul Simon tribute band featuring Pacific Northwest all stars musicians from Polecat, Petty or Not, Skillethead, and the Jenner Fox Band. The ensemble was formed on a fateful election night when they found themselves listening to “American Tune” and discovered a mutual reverence for Paul Simon. National Guitar  performs a range of Simon’s music from Garfunkel to Graceland and everywhere in between. Come prepared to sing along, groove, and celebrate some of the finest music from a true American original.

The  five piece band features piano, organ, electric guitar, bass, dobro, percussion, acoustic guitar, and layered vocal harmony. With decades of arranging and touring under their belts, National Guitar brings new life to Simon’s beloved catalog.

JENNER FOX is a multi-faceted, uber-talented individual who makes people feel better when they're around him. I've witnessed the unique twinkle in Jenner's eye in 2 separate arenas. One was when his hands are on the oars of a raft, smiling in the calm, blue-green pool below a powerful Class V section of the famous Futaleufú River in Patagonia. The other is in a dimly lit lodge, sitting on sheepskins under the Southern Cross in the sky above while he pours his soul into filling the space with his powerful music. In either venue, Jenner is inspiring, encouraging, and up-lifting.

On the river and on the road, Jenner is a folk singer with music that ranges from a soft mandolin melody to full-blown guitar strumming that has strings on the edge of breaking. He draws his influence from river canyons, urban communities, John Prine, Josh Ritter, and the people, roads, and stories in between.

JENNER FOX BAND features Oregon’s tuba state champion Aaron Moore on electric bass, and former members of the beloved Northwest outfit Polecat – Jeremy Elliott on electric guitar and Aaron Guest on keys, this band is not one to be missed.

“Jenner combines the lyricism of Joni Mitchell and the commentary of Neil Young to represent the next generation of singer songwriters.” - Grammy nominated producer, Cookie Marenco

Evolution Under the Influence: Alcohol and the Coevolution of Humans and Yeast

Have you ever sat down at a bar, ordered a beer, and thought to yourself, “Why do humans even have so many specific genes for breaking down alcohol?” This is what happens when a guy with a PhD in Molecular and Medical Genetics from OHSU starts making booze professionally. The answer, as it turns out, takes you a long way back in human history; our relationship with yeast (the organism that makes alcohol), predates human evolution.

At this Science on Tap, Dr. Kevin McCabe, Winemaker, Enologist, and Beekeeper at Double Strand Wine, will take you through the history of primate alcohol consumption, the importance of yeast and alcoholic fermentation to human history, and how early microbiology turned the tables on yeast and gave humans control over our boozy destiny.

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

Some folks are lucky to find what they love to do at an early age and quietly settle in for the long haul expanding and developing their work over the arc of a lifetime. Willy Porter is one of those artists. He has followed his own path to explore the sacred language that music truly is. 30 years after his solo recording debut, he continues to reach further into his guitar & pen while stretching the form of what his own music can be.

Willy Porter continues on a musical and personal odyssey spanning over two decades, 11 albums, and multiple continents. His journey has been defined by an inquisitive love for humanity and the language that describes what we all hold to be true. Porter’s songs weave a universal perspective about the questions, struggles, and triumphs of human existence. His live shows are guitar-driven grit, soul, silence and muscle– at times electrifying, dynamic, and unique in the way that Porter’s voice blends and fuses with his fret work.

A largely self-taught musician, Porter began treating audiences to his brand of guitar playing and wry storytelling in the late ‘80’s while living in Madison, Wisconsin. In 1990, he released his first full-length independent album, The Trees Have Soul, and the touring life has flowed steadily ever since. Porter has literally logged millions of miles across America, Canada, the UK, and Europe, touring solo, as well as with various incarnations of the Willy Porter Band and in support of artists like Tori Amos, Paul Simon, Jethro Tull, Sting, and Jeff Beck.

Portland singer songwriter Clara Baker opens the show.

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
During his years as lead singer and main songwriter of Toad the Wet Sprocket, Glen Phillips helped to create the band’s elegant folk/pop sound with honest, introspective lyrics that forged a close bond with their fans. When Toad went on hiatus, Glen launched a solo career with his album Abulum, and stayed busy collaborating with other artists on various projects including Mutual Admiration Society, with members of Nickel Creek and Remote Tree Children, an experimental outing with John Morgan Askew.

“Until recently, I’ve seldom stayed in one place for very long,” Phillips says, explaining the genesis of his new album, THERE IS SO MUCH HERE. “I was lucky during the COVID lockdown to move in with my girlfriend, now wife, and to be home for the longest stretch I’ve had since the birth of my daughter, 20 years ago. I began noticing the little things. After a life of travel and seeking out peak experiences, I began to appreciate sitting still, watching the paint dry and loving it.

“I’ve been playing a songwriting game with Texas folk singer Matt The Electrician, for about ten years. Every Friday, he sends out a title. We have a week to write a song that includes it. The process allows me to write songs I wouldn’t write on my own. I’m always surprised at what comes out.”

“When my friend John [Morgan Askew] invited me to come up to his studio and make music, I said, ‘Yes’, as I collected a bunch of the new songs and headed up to Bocce Studios, in Vancouver, WA. John invited drummer Ji Tanzer and bass player/multi-instrumentalist Dave Depper along. When we started playing, I wasn’t sure we were aiming for, but as the process unfolded, the songs began to make sense together.”

Phillips’ previous solo record, SWALLOWED BY THE NEW, was about grief, a post-divorce outing while THERE IS SO MUCH HERE finds Phillips writing love songs again focusing on gratitude, beauty and staying present. “With this batch of songs, I noticed I was writing hopeful music again. I’d turned the corner and was more interested in curiosity and play than I was in gazing at my navel. I was finally in a state of being that wasn’t about grief and loss. Things felt doable and even exciting again.”

Employing a 6-piece horn section, tuned percussion and 4 vocalists, this ensemble pulls no punches - delivering the intricacies and eccentricities of Frank's music with power, authenticity and musical prowess. That said, no Zappa concert would be complete without a healthy dose of Frank's sardonic wit - and the Stinkfoot Orchestra does not skimp on this vital ingredient. Incorporating props, costumes, stage vignettes and audience participation, the band goes the extra mile with every performance to create a complete entertainment experience that leaves even the pickiest Zappa fan pining for more.

If you were able to catch one of their previous performances in Portland, you know to expect a different show each time (and you also know what an amazing show to expect).

“The Stinkfoot Orchestra... admirably delivered all the musical virtuosity, compositional non-conformity, and satire of American culture that Frank Zappa distilled within his extensive oeuvre. The impression left upon driving home from this experience was one of deep appreciation mixed with laughter and amazement.” - Ted Silverman, Jambase

    Legendary Burlesque returns!

Bergamot Burlesque is excited to bring back our beloved annual event, Legendary Burlesque, which features a living burlesque legend as the headliner. The relaunch of Legendary Burlesque is coming May 11, 2024 and will feature the Grand Beaver of Canadian Burlesque, Judith Stein. Tickets are on sale now to see this incredible performer.

Judith Stein was a cash-strapped student in Eugene, Oregon in the 1970s until she finally joined the ranks of the strip tease. Starting out as a topless go-go girl, it was suggested she should become a stripper. The lure of more money, international travel and fabulous costumes was all the inducement Judith needed to fulfill her dreams.

From 1973-1990 two suitcases were her home. She performed throughout Micronesia, USA, Canada, and New Zealand until finally retiring and trading the bright lights of burlesque for the Northern Lights of British Columbia, Canada.

But, alas, there was no rest for the wicket as the saying goes. In 2012 Judith was rediscovered by the Burlesque Hall of Fame as the first Canadian Legend and with delight she began performing again. Judith was honored to be a subject in the film “League of Exotic Dancers” along with various podcasts, press and performances all with a side of saltiness and joy. She has also been mentoring performers with a side of truthful burlesque history.

She continues to revel and reveal as the Grand Beaver of Canadian Burlesque with great delight.

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

Join us for a magical evening at Alberta Rose Theatre as we welcome the incredibly gifted psychic medium, Daniel Monroe. Daniel has a special gift of connecting with the other side and bringing forward messages filled with love, healing, and laughter. This highly anticipated Gallery reading event will be an unforgettable experience as Daniel bridges the gap between this world and the spirit realm.

Daniel, a highly sought-after psychic medium from the Portland area, has honed his abilities through training with some of the best celebrity mediums around the world. Now, he is bringing his live show, "Hello From Heaven," to Portland, for an evening of connecting with departed loved ones.

What sets Daniel apart is not just his ability to communicate with spirits, but his compassionate and caring heart. He delivers messages with grace, class, and humor, even when the messages may be heavy or emotional. Daniel's goal is to bring comfort, closure, and healing to those who attend his events, and he does so with a warmth and kindness that is truly special.

As we celebrate this special Mother's Day event, there is no better way to honor the moms in our lives than by connecting with the love and guidance of our departed loved ones.
