Known as Hawai‘i’s “Renaissance Man,” George Kahumoku Jr., is a master slack key guitarist, a four-time Grammy Award winner, and an accomplished songwriter. Using his very personal melodic style, inventiveness, and versatility, Kahumoku conveys the genuine spirit of Hawai‘i’ to all his listeners.

Daniel Ho is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, and performer, with talent and versatility on ukulele, slack key guitar, piano, and vocals. He's a six-time Grammy winner, with four of his Grammy credits as producer of George Kahumoku’s four Grammy-winning recordings. His two other Grammy wins were for performances with his close friend, Tia Carrere.

International star and two-time Grammy winner, Tia Carrere first came to fame by showcasing her considerable singing and acting chops in the film Wayne’s World. She went on to star in many featured roles in film and television, before returning to her Hawaiian roots and creating two of her Grammy-winning albums with Daniel Ho.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
One of the most enduring songwriters of the last 40 years celebrates the release of his new album Lifetime Achievement," at the Alberta Rose.  Loudon Wainwright III is one of our favorites. Don't miss this show!

“I had a very romantic idea when I began that I would be dead by the time I was 25,” he admits with a smile. “Just because that sounded so cool and groovy and dangerous. I'm happy it didn't work out that way. When I think about the fact that I've been doing this for half a century, it's kind of incredible. The place I played at last night, I played fifty years ago. It's encouraging in a funny kind of way - that it's gone on this long and it's still a lot of fun. The performing part of it, and the mysterious thing of getting to write a new song. After the doldrums of the past two years, I had a creative burst in the last year, and that felt good. It was something to build a record on.”

With a full tour itinerary for 2022 already in place, Loudon is looking forward to taking the new songs onto the stage. Looking back on a legacy the New York Times calls “rich, complicated and often surprisingly dark,” he says, “I remember when I made my first record for Atlantic in 1969. I was always saying, 'I want to make a voice and guitar record, and I want it to be a record – not only a recording, but a document that captures a moment.' I was 21 and very serious, and I thought I'd be dead in four years (laughs). So I wanted to make something that would last. A testament. Now, fifty years later, I guess I still want to make a testament. I want to write a group of songs and get them down in the best possible way. And I like to think they might last a while.”

Portland-based Americana treasure Tony Furtado opens the show.  Tony is an evocative and soulful singer, a wide-ranging songwriter and a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist who mixes and matches sounds and styles with the flair of a master chef.  All of the music of America is in Tony’s music.

Nabil Ayers has written about race and music for The New York Times, NPR, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and GQ. His upcoming memoir My Life in the Sunshine will be published from Penguin/Viking in June 2022, and documents the complex task of building an identity around an absent father. Alongside his literary pursuits, Ayers has run musical campaigns for The National, Big Thief, Grimes, and at the age of twenty-five, opened Seattle's Sonic Boom Records store. Unable to stay off the stage, Ayers has performed as a drummer in several bands, and began his own record label, The Control Group/Valley of Search, which has released music by Cate Le Bon, The Killers, PJ Harvey, his uncle—the jazz musician Alan Braufman—and others. Alongside his festival performances, he was a Semi-Finalist in the Seattle International Comedy Competition. With over fifteen years of touring to date, The Quebe Sisters have delivered their authentic triple fiddle and three-part harmony sound to the concert halls and festivals of North America and Europe.

Grace, Sophia, and Hulda Quebe front an innovative Progressive Western Swing band of archtop guitar, upright bass, fiddles and sibling harmony. The Dallas-based five-piece presents a unique Americana blend of Western Swing, Jazz-influenced Swing, Country, Texas-Style Fiddling, and Western music.

“We differentiate our music as ‘Progressive Western Swing’ from simply ‘Western Swing’ because we aren’t trying to sound just like Bob Wills,” Grace Quebe explains. “Instead, we continue his vision, playing the style he pioneered in an authentic way by incorporating new genres and songs, interpreting them using our own unique voice through Country instrumentation.”

Combine the musical stylings of The Mills Brothers, Ray Price, Count Basie, Willie Nelson, and you have none other than The Quebe Sisters.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

The San Francisco Bay Area bluegrass veteran Laurie Lewis is often described as a triple threat: she is a powerful vocalist in the high-lonesome mold, a songwriter who has bridged the gap between contemporary ideas and traditional song styles, and a championship-level fiddler. Forging a solo career with a series of album releases under her own name beginning in the mid-1980s, Lewis has also been noted for her ongoing collaborations with other musicians. She has been especially influential among women in bluegrass, an underrepresented group on bluegrass stages before she came along.

KRISTEN GRAINGER & TRUE NORTH is a bluegrass-infused Americana powerhouse of terrific songwriting, lush vocals and crazy-good instrumentalists.  Fronted by singer-songwriter Kristen Grainger, the band is comprised of multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Dan Wetzel and Pacific Northwest bluegrass superstars Martin Stevens (mandolin, octave mandolin, fiddle, vocals) and Josh Adkins (upright bass, vocals), both formerly of the Bluegrass Regulators.

Backed by an all-star house band, The Not-Ready-for-Prine-Time Players, featured vocalists from the region will perform their favorite John Prine songs.

To his fans, the stories that Prine told about the origins of his songs are every bit as interesting as the songs themselves.  Each song will be accompanied by a story that relates to the song and perhaps to the artist’s personal experience with the musings of John Prine.

Led by Jeff Haigerty, (emcee, acoustic guitar & harmonica) The Not-Ready-For-Prine-Time Players are an eight-piece band of working musicians in the Portland scene.  It includes Jesse Withers (bass), Fred Stephenson (lead guitar),  Colin Hogan (piano & organ), David Owen (drums), Mike Moore (mandolin),  Kate O’Brien (violin), and Steely Pete Burak (pedal steel guitar).

Featured artists include Amanda Richards, Kris Deelane, Stephanie Anne Johnson, and Colin Hogan [subject to change]

Technology often distracts us from nature, but what if it could reconnect us instead? In The Sounds of Life political ecologist Karen Bakker shares fascinating and surprising stories of nonhuman sound, interweaving insights from technological innovation and traditional knowledge.

We meet scientists using sound to protect and regenerate endangered species from the Great Barrier Reef to the Arctic and the Amazon. We discover the shocking impacts of noise pollution on both animals and plants. We learn how artificial intelligence can decode nonhuman sounds, and meet the researchers building dictionaries in East African Elephant and Sperm Whalish.

Karen Bakker is a Professor at the University of British Columbia and, in 2022/23, Martina S. Horner Distinguished Visiting Professor and Fellow of the Harvard Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies. Her Smart Earth project explores the relationship between digital innovation and environmental sustainability, including research at the frontier of digital bioacoustics, featured in her new book The Sounds of Life.

"ALL TOGETHER, THAT AND THIS, WITH ALL OUR TRICKS, WE'RE MAKING CHRISTMAS TIME!"

We're back with The Saloon Ensemble's epic production of "The Nitemare B4 Xmas!!!!"

Portland's legendary performance troupe The Saloon Ensemble will once again bring to the stage a live performance of the brilliant Danny Elfman score complete with interactive SING-A-LONGS, a COSTUME CONTEST, everyone's favorite SCREAMING CONTEST and many other 'horrible' surprises!

Celebrate the Halloween season with our annual production that's been packing houses and delivering joyous fun for all spirits, young and old.

"Saloon’s Nitemare is many kinds of show–a kid’s show, a variety show, a retelling of a seasonal myth, a big-band dance show, an enthusiastic singspiel–and there’s something timeless about that sort of despecialization; the production’s smattering of amateurish elements only added to that feeling. But that’s not to say that any of it was poorly performed–the show was grand, simply grand, and the band kicked ass...I hope this show runs for a century."

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

Located in the heart of the eclectic Alberta Arts District, the Alberta Rose originally opened as a motion picture house in 1927 and showed films until it closed in 1978. The theatre has 300 fixed seats and radiates the serene feeling of a Spanish-Colonial courtyard. The Alberta Rose is a mid-size, seated listening room where the audience can enjoy excellent lines of sight, outstanding acoustics and where every seat feels close to the stage and the artist.
