Bartlett Woods Retirement Community presents legendary Maine humorist Tim Sample!

Tim Sample is a Maine native whose unique New England style of humor has gained him a national following. When introducing Tim on ABC’s Good Morning America Charles Gibson referred to him as, “The man who wrote the book-literally, on Maine humor!” Legendary newsman Charles Kuralt has called Sample “Maine’s Humorist Laureate.”

Describing Tim Sample’s work as “humor” rather than “comedy” is, according to fellow Mainer and bestselling novelist Stephen King an important distinction:

“He’s a funny guy, you’ll get no argument from me on that score, but no more a comedian than Mark Twain or Artemis Ward. Like, them, Timmy (that’s what I always call him the way folks from up our way are apt to call their friends “dearie”) isn’t acting; he’s just talking in a kind of heightened and gifted way, as folks do when they’re passing on valuable tales about the human condition.”

In addition to TV, radio and a dozen popular albums of “down east” humor (five of them released on the legendary Bert and I label), Tim spent eleven years (1993 -2004) as a regular correspondent for the Emmy award winning network television show CBS News Sunday Morning, hosted by Charles Osgood.

Tim has written and/or illustrated over a dozen books, including regional bestsellers Saturday Night at Moody’s Diner and How to Talk Yankee. Tim’s narration work includes such award-winning films and audiobooks as Robert McCloskey’s children’s classic Burt Dow Deep Water Man, Stephen King’s The Sun Dog and Drunken Fireworks as well as the immensely popular film documentary From Stump to Ship.

Join us for a night of comedy to benefit Bartlett Woods Retirement Community!

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Bluegrass band Mile Twelve (Boston) teams up with Roots band Low Lily (Vermont) for a double bill that will knock your socks off!

Both bands formed in 2014 and grew out of the thriving Boston acoustic music scene. Both have toured extensively for the past four years, captivating audiences at festivals and halls throughout the US and around the world. Between Mile Twelve’s updated bluegrass aesthetic and Low Lily's modern approach to roots music, the sounds of the evening will vary from the high-energy festival vibe to more lyrical moments, and there may be a few surprises in store as well!

Mile Twelve is a fresh, hard driving young band beautifully walking the line between original and traditional bluegrass. Since their formation in the fall of 2014, Mile Twelve has quickly been on the rise. They’ve performed extensively throughout the U.S., Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia and Japan, including sets at major festivals such as Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, FreshGrass Festival, Thomas Point Beach Bluegrass Festival, and Joe Val Bluegrass Festival. Their music is in rotation on the Bluegrass Junction Sirius XM channel, and their rendition of the Stanley Brothers classic “Our Last Goodbye” was featured on a Spotify "Fresh Bluegrass” playlist. The band was the winner of the 2017 Momentum Award by the International Bluegrass Music Association, and in October 2017 released their debut full-length record “Onwards”, produced by Stephen Mougin.

With a vocal blend that has been dubbed “outstanding” and “meticulous,” Low Lily’s cohesive sound comes naturally for musicians whose lives have been entwined on the road and onstage for almost two decades. Setting down roots in Brattleboro, Vermont, the band has crafted a signature sound which they have shared with enthusiastic audiences throughout North America and the UK, garnering two #1 songs on international folk radio and two New England Music Award nominations. Chosen as Falcon Ridge Folk Festival’s “Most Wanted Band” of 2016, Low Lily~ Liz Simmons (vocals and guitar), Flynn Cohen (vocals, guitar, and mandolin), and Lissa Schneckenburger (vocals and fiddle) with Corey DiMario (double bass)~ play acoustic music that is deeply rooted in tradition yet sounds refreshingly contemporary.

Micromassé is a trio of accomplished musicians offering a fresh new sound that is nostalgically analog, worldly and explosively modern. Combining the classic sound of the Hammond Organ with dynamic electric guitar and infectious drums; Micromassé strives to bring instrumental music to new frontiers while maintaining a positive groove and a fun vibe.

Micromassé has garnered superlative reviews to their recordings and concerts. They have shared the stage with Charlie Hunter, Bombino, Marco Benevento, Consider the Source, Dynamo, The Fogcutters, and Moon Hootch, among others!

Joining Micromassé for this MaineMadeMusic double bill is their frequent collaborator; Portland based singer/songwriter, Sara Hallie Richardson. With influences such as Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, and Bjork, Richardson's songs are known for dense vocal harmonies and soaring melodies as well as combining synthetic and acoustic orchestral sounds. Recently, Sara has come together with the Amaratos Quartet, a Portland-based string quartet. Amaratos Quartet is a powerhouse in their own right, having performed at The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon twice, on Sofar Sounds Maine on their own as a quartet, and again as guests of artist Sara Hallie Richardson; at the TEDxDirigo Mavericks and Misfits; on The Cold River Radio Show; at The Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center; and also regularly throughout Maine and the greater Portland area.
