Folk Legends may seem to be a pretentious name, but it may be the only name appropriate for the collective talents of George Grove, Rick Dougherty and Jerry Siggins. These three men have been involved with music from the great Folk Era since the actual days of the great Folk Era.

Along the way, all three gentlemen became close friends with and performed on the same stages with the best known names of the folk and the folk-rock eras: Peter Paul & Mary, Tom Paxton, Judy Collins, Barry MacGuire, The New Christy Minstrels, The Brothers Four, The Chad Mitchell Trio, The Mamas & The Papas, The Association, John Sebastian, Josh White Jr, The Limeliters, Glenn Yarbrough, The Kingston Trio, Pete Seeger... Yes, this is a list of musical icons, but it is also a list of people with whom they've performed, traveled, written songs and shared meals. These are the friends and memories Folk Legends brings to life with the memorable and exciting music of the Great American Folksong Book™.

SHAWN MULLINS
https://shawnmullins.com/

Shawn Mullins (born March 8, 1968) is an American singer-songwriter who specializes in folk rock, instrumental rock, adult alternative, and Americana music. He is best known for the 1998 single “Lullaby”, which hit number one on the Adult Top 40 and was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Mullins was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He cultivated an interest in music beginning in his days at Clarkston High School in Clarkston, Georgia (where he made the acquaintance of friend and mentor Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls). Later, he honed his craft in his college days at North Georgia College and State University as a solo acoustic musician and bandmaster of the military marching band (Golden Eagle Band). He attended North Georgia College and State University on an Army ROTC scholarship with an intention of possibly pursuing a military career. Although he quickly abandoned this notion in favor of songwriting, the contract nonetheless obliged him after graduation to serve a short term as an inactive Infantry officer in the Individual Ready Reserve component of the U.S. Army Reserve. He served in an inactive status, reaching the rank of 1st lieutenant before fulfilling his service obligation and resigning honorably.

His critical breakthrough came when his song “Lullaby”, from the album Soul’s Core, became a radio and video hit. In the video for “Lullaby”, directed by Roger Pistole, actress Dominique Swain appeared. One of his more famous songs, “All in My Head”, was featured on the hit television sitcom “Scrubs”. This song was written after an e-mail was sent out by the producers of the new show searching for a theme song. Mullins wrote a demo version and sent it in within 24 hours. It wasn’t selected as the theme song, but the demo version was used in a season one episode of the series.

Another single, “Shimmer”, was included on the soundtrack for the TV show Dawson’s Creek and was a minor hit. “Shimmer” was also used in Australia as part of its promotional campaign during the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics and is still considered in Australia as the unofficial anthem of the games. To date he has yet to match the overwhelming commercial success of “Lullaby”, which was also released as a live performance on the charity album Live in the X Lounge II in 1999. In early 2002, he formed the supergroup The Thorns with Matthew Sweet and Pete Droge.

For its 20th anniversary, Shawn is revisiting the music of Soul’s Core by recording two new versions of the album. He is calling this Soul’s Core Revival. This is not a remix or a remaster of the original, but rather brand new recordings with new arrangements of the songs – one album will be new stripped down solo performances, some on guitar, some on piano and maybe one a cappella and the second will be a new studio recording with his full band, Soul Carnival.

At the budding age of just 15 years old, Noah Teal is proof that age is nothing but a number when it comes to the ability to shred a guitar. Noah, who first picked up a guitar at just five years old, has now been perfecting his craft for an entire decade.

He first began by picking through the riffs of Alex Lifeson of Rush, the solos of Eddie Van Halen, and many other rock players such as Slash of Guns N’ Roses, Angus Young from ACDC, Joe Walsh and Don Felder of the Eagles, and David Gilmour from Pink Floyd. At the time though, his most notable feat was multiple performances of Jimi Hendrix’s version of “The Star Spangled Banner” at school and many other places across Georgia.

Before starting his solo adventure, Noah played as lead guitar in the Jackson, Georgia-based band “The Olde Soles” around the age of 10 with friends from school and his sister. The Soles played ‘70s and ‘80s classic rock hits such as “Back In Black,” “Hotel California” and “Sweet Child O’ Mine” to name a few. But something just wasn’t clicking for him. Then it happened in May of 2018 at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre; guitar god and Noah’s soon-to-be idol came to town - none other than Joe Bonamassa…

In November of 2019, Noah Teal would hit the stage for the first time along with a backing band for nearly an hour's worth of blues and blues-rock, cementing the beginning of Noah’s only plan in life. Noah, along with his backing band The Express, now has a multitude of highly successful

shows in the Southeast under his belt, including most recently opening for award-winning and national touring blues guitarist & singer, Samantha Fish.

Among his most notable accomplishments, Noah is now a featured artist of the Gibson Authorized Guitar Builder Banker Custom Guitars out of North Georgia, in which he is in good company alongside such artists as Brent Hinds of Mastodon, Blackberry Smoke’s Charlie Starr, Benji Shanks and Paul Jackson, and Coy Bowles of The Zac Brown Band, the latter of which is co-writing and producing Noah’s debut record set to be released fall of 2021.

There’s no doubt that the future of this 15-year-old guitar slinger from Jackson Lake, Georgia is a bright one. With the help and generosity of such people like Norman’s Rare Guitars featuring him in a video, Songbirds Guitar Museum and Foundation bringing him up to play the museum’s most expensive and prized instruments, sponsorship by Banker Custom Guitars, Grammy Award-winning Coy Bowles’ co-writing and producing guidance on the first record, and the support of many, many others, there is a high probability you will be hearing the name Teal again.

You don’t want to miss out on following the budding career of this up-and-coming guitar player, singer and songwriter.

Chi-Town Transit Authority is a rocking seven piece band created in the image of the original configuration of the rock group Chicago.

"We don't carry any back-up singers or front of house singers so often used in other tribute bands because of the challenging vocals. We also play a wide variety of Chicago's catalogue, including the big hits, the fan favorites, and the soulful and rocking deeper cuts found on their first few albums." (CTA)

“…like the headlights on the hearse.” - Uncut

Folk stalwart Shannon McNally’s warm, worn-in vocals amplify the sadness at the center of “All These Blues Go Walkin’ By” and “All That’s Left Is Fare-Thee-Well.” - Pitchfork

"She has the voice: bruised, smoky and ornery, right at home where country and soul meet. She has the melodies and the timing - she’s irresistible.” - Jon Pareles, The New York Times

Thom Jurek at All Music said it best, "Only Gram Parsons' term "Cosmic American Music" begins to touch her mercurial, changeling roots aesthetic, ... McNally is a Zen-like, post-Beat song poet”. For those who have followed McNally’s nearly twenty year career the thing that most sticks with the listener about her, is the timeless effortlessness that she brings to all she does. With a long catalog and longer list of peers with whom she has written, recorded and toured, McNally continues to turn out great music that defies blatant genre-fication.

At home across the American (Americana) music spectrum, the Grammy nominee who’s live music career began on the jam band circuit of the 1990’s with bands like Robert Randolph and Derek Trucks, writes as well as she interprets the songs of others, has a top tier musicality to her craft, a soul stirring voice that immediately grabs one by the heart strings and a troubadour’s wanderlust, not to mention as it turns out, she is also an excellent electric guitar player.

Like her anti-hero heros J.J. Cale, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan. Dr. John, and Jim Dickinson, McNally knows who she serves. She serves the song. Her quiet but steady plodding through the many layers of the business of music, hasn’t ever been rewarded with massive fame and fortune but in time that slow burn has become the treasure in and of itself.

The part of McNally’s narrative that is often missed is that not only has she self-managed herself for nearly all of her career but that she has also been a stout warrior-like-artist who often went toe-to-toe with label heads and A&R to defend and fight for her visions. She left the major label world after ten years at Capital/EMI to fend for herself on various smaller labels and self-release paradigms. Perhaps the business of music is finally catching up with her independent spirit. We shall see.

Ears are gonna ring, amps are gonna blow, clubs will run outta beer, and then ...in the end, when it's all said and done... you will believe!

Sylvia Rose Novak

Growing up in Alabama as a “first generation” Southerner, Sylvia Rose Novak frequently bucked against the conventions of the region in her formative years. She took to music at an early age, studying jazz bass since the age of 12. In her teenage years, she fell in love with grunge and the first wave of emo and pop-punk.
Though her career blossomed in the folk-Americana scene, Novak’s youth beckoned when it came time to write songs for her most recent album, “Bad Luck” (2020). Matching the youthful energy of the songs is her steadfast band-collectively titled ‘“Parts Unknown”.

The inability to tour in 2020 led Novak to record what will be her fifth studio album. As it began shaping up, it was clear that all traces of her folky past had been laid to rest under a mountain of thunderous bass and drums, heavy guitars and powerful vocals. The recordings soon split into two fronts: A follow up to “Bad Luck”: heavy rock with powerful lyrics that Foo Fighters fans will latch onto and Novak’s final arrival at her band’s true sound: her songwriting set to angsty singalong festival anthems that will remind elder emo kids of Paramore’s live shows from 2006.

MOVERS

A few years back, guitarist Collin Ferguson, drummer Drew Serrero, and bassist Brian Anthony Wilson took it upon themselves to inject a modern, yet familiar Rock’n’Roll sound into the Southeast. Embracing a modern take on the classic sounds of bands such as Rush, Pink Floyd, and The Police, Movers yields a unique mix of psychedelic, progressive, new wave, and hard rock. Out of Athens, GA, January 2021 saw the release of the band’s self-titled debut album, a 5-song thrill ride highlighted by the upbeat, popular single, “Take Me Off of the Road.” Shortly thereafter, keyboardist Jack Johnston joined the bands’ lineup, adding an extra dimension of creative, rockin’ sounds.

What began as Celtic Thunder's Neil Byrne and Ryan Kelly performing a series of shows together called 'Acoustic By Candlelight' back in 2012 has turned into what is now known as Byrne and Kelly.

Driven by dynamic vocal harmonies, the duo seamlessly combines genres like traditional Irish and Americana to create a fresh, Celtic folk sound that has garnered comparisons to iconic folk-rock duos like Simon & Garfunkel and The Everly Brothers.

Raised in Tupelo, Mississippi, among the same spirits (and some of the actual people) who nurtured the young Elvis generations before, Paul Thorn has rambled down back roads, battled four-time world champion boxer Roberto Duran on national television, signed with and been dropped by a major label, performed on stages with Bonnie Raitt, Mark Knopfler, Sting, and John Prine among many others, and made some of the most emotionally restless yet relatable music of our time.

With 20 years of writing, touring, and entertaining under his belt, he shows no sign of slowing down with his new record, Don't Let the Devil Ride, breaking genre barriers and topping charts, putting a new twist on his already-entertaining live show.

Grace is the winner of many of the nation’s most prestigious songwriting contests, including NPR’s Mountain Stage New Song Contest, and has received grants from the Buddy Holly Educational Foundation. Grace’s songs have been recorded by other esteemed artists, including Sara Hickman and Ruthie Foster. Her highly acclaimed independently released records, Grace Pettis (2009), Two Birds (2012), and the acoustic EP, Blue Star in a Red Sky (2018), have garnered praise from top-notch magazines, newspapers, and radio. She also holds down duties as a member (along with Rebecca Loebe and BettySoo) of the Americana/folk-pop trio Nobody’s Girl.

From an early age, Grace was encouraged to speak her mind and to express herself musically. Words and music were the family heirlooms she inherited from her parents, a traveling songwriter (Pierce Pettis) and poetry scholar (Dr. Margaret Mills Harper), who were divorced by the time she was a small child. As a result of that separation, she was raised in two very different parts of the "Deep South": the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia, and the backwoods of Mentone, Alabama. Grace's musical influences run the gamut of Southern sounds: from mountain music and gospel to country and folk to R&B and hip hop. Pierce was on the road a lot, and the albums he left for her to listen to while he was touring the country and sending paychecks home were both a way to be closer to him and a driving influence in her writing from an early age. She was writing songs as soon as she could talk and enlisting help from her mom to get them down on paper by the time she was five.

An award-winning singer-songwriter from Austin via Alabama, this isn't Pettis' first rodeo. For Grace, who has been characterized as “a little bit folk, a little bit country/Americana, and a whole lot of soul,” 2020 had many silver linings. She signed with MPress Records, released three critically acclaimed singles – “Landon”, White Noise”, and “Drop Another Pin” (with “Landon” landing at #10 on The Bluegrass Situation’s year-end “The Women Who Wrote Our 2020 Soundtrack”), and recorded a new record in Nashville (forthcoming on MPress Records, May 2021).

Matthew Kahler plays the music of James Taylor

Streaming tickets available: https://www.stellartickets.com/o/eddie-owen-presents

As an accomplished Singer/Songwriter in his own right, Matthew Kahler has now ventured further into the musical world of James Taylor. Matthew has always admired the works of JT, one of the most notable musicians of our time, and has put together a collection of songs to perform for Taylor's fans who share this mutual admiration. Matthew will be accompanied by an all star group of musicians who will make this presentation even more complete, Gerry Hansen (percussion), Martin Kearns (piano and keyboard) and Michael C. Steele (bass). In this special tribute concert, which will showcase so many memorable songs, you will experience the very essence of James Taylor himself, in a way that will cause you to forget who is actually doing the serenading. Matthew’s connection with Eddie Owen goes back to the 1990’s. He is part of an elite group of singer-songwriters who helped form the now legendary community of Indie Music in Atlanta. His genuine talent comes through in every performance.

Multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Darrell Scott mines and cultivates the everyday moment, taking the rote, menial, mundane, and allowing it to be surreal, ever poignant, and candidly honest, lilting, blooming, and resonating.

The words he fosters allow us to make sense of the world, what is at stake here, and our place in it. And ultimately, Darrell knows the sole truth of life is that love is all that matters, that we don't always get it right, but that's the instinctive and requisite circuitous allure of things, why we forever chase it, and why it is held sacred.

Darrell Scott comes from a musical family with a father who had him smitten with guitars by the age of 4, alongside a brother who played Jerry Reed style as well. From there, things only ramped up with literature and poetry endeavors while a student at Tufts University, along with playing his way through life. This would never change.
After recently touring with Robert Plant and the Zac Brown Band (2 years with each), and producing albums for Malcolm Holcomb and Guy Clark and being named "songwriter of the year" for both ASCAP and NSAI, these days find him roaming his Tennessee wilderness acreage hiking along the small river, creating delicious meals with food raised on his property and playing music.
He often leads songwriting workshops to help people tell their own truths with their stories, and is as busy as always writing, producing, performing, and just plain fully immersing himself in life.

Aaron Burdett Trio Bio

Aaron Burdett’s songs have a ring of truth.. He’s a singer-songwriter working broadly in Americana, but with his recent acoustic-trio performances, he’s found a new home in the bluegrass circuit.

The Aaron Burdett Trio consists of: Aaron Burdett on vocals and guitar, Kim France on upright bass and backing vocals, and Daniel Ullom on mandolin.

Kim got her musical start on Ocracoke Island in the late 90’s playing bluegrass guitar, and later discovered that upright bass was a natural fit. She’s been exploring new musical styles ever since. In her 14 years as a bassist, Kim has lent the "low end" and her vocal soundings to many of her friends’ and colleagues’ recordings. She also stays busy playing double bass for the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra and various chamber groups

Daniel Ullom grew up in the Yakima Valley of Washington state and has played the mandolin for as long as he can remember. He has had the privilege of performing all across the United States, playing at festivals, clubs, farms, living rooms and the occasional street corner.

Aaron Burdett is from Western North Carolina. His musical style is a seamless blend of Americana, Country, Blues, Bluegrass, and Folk-rock. Burdett has been recently listed as one of the most important regional musicians by WNC Magazine. He's won awards in multiple songwriting competitions hosted by the likes of Merlefest, Mountain Stage, the NC Songwriter’s Co-op, and Our State Magazine.

Raised in North Carolina, Brooklyn-based Americana crooner Kevin Daniel is set on making NYC a destination for Nashville sounds. The songwriter and multi-instrumentalist brings southern rock, gospel, and blues to barrooms of Brooklyn and beyond. But Daniel wasn’t always chasing his dreams.

In the winter of 2013, during a dinner party in Bushwick, Brooklyn, Kevin received a phone call from his sister that would change everything. His mother and stepfather, adventure-seekers and amateur pilots, had been flying back from their mountain house in western North Carolina when their plane had crashed, killing both of them. Daniel’s life was turned upside down, his family torn apart and the world forever changed. During his return to North Carolina to help with family business, and while reliving his parent’s lives through photos, essays, and family stories, Kevin wrote over a dozen songs, all fueled by the grief of losing his parents as well as the celebration of the large lives they were known for. From those songs six were chosen to record, including one written specifically for Kevin’s parent’s memorial service.

The result of those recordings was FLY, Kevin Daniel’s inaugural EP. The six-song project was recorded in 2014 in Brooklyn and embodies the depth of Daniel’s emotions during a time of supreme distress. Southern sounds of banjo and country-loving three-part harmonies were backed by rock riffs and pop lyrics, which spoke true to life and the celebration of living. “I always knew I wanted to record my own music, and a life spent being in other people’s bands had prepared me to lead my own, both in the studio and on the stage. It was losing my parents that gave me the kick in the ass to finally do it”, says Daniel. The EP is available on all digital outlets as well as on 12-inch opaque blue vinyl.

In 2018 Kevin Daniel finished his second EP, Myself Through You, recorded at Degraw Sound in Brooklyn, NY, and produced, engineered, and mixed by Ben Rice. Kevin gathered together a host of talented, professional musicians from all backgrounds for the project, which resulted in a richly recorded blend of genres and instruments. “When I started thinking about this EP, I knew I wanted to get some of the best musicians I know in the studio. With Ben’s help we created a space where people could come in, lay down their own version of the parts, and create something unique to them as well as the record,” says Kevin.

Kevin followed up his sophomore release with his first full length LP, ‘Things I Don’t See’. The 11-song album brings together some of New York state’s most talented musicians and producers, including Anthony Krizan (Spin Doctors), The Restless Age, John LeDeau (The National Reserve), and Kenny Siegel (Old Soul Studios). The album has taken Kevin all over the US and UK, touring both solo and with a full band, gaining global radio spins through tunes like “Used To Be”, “Pour Me A Drink”, and “Time To Rise”. Americana Highways Magazine says “Things I Don’t See showcases Daniel’s fluid ability as a songwriter to seamlessly incorporate bits of rock, soul, country, blues, roots, and Appalachia into his thoughtful examination of pain and awakenings, visceral and spiritual.” With three albums under his belt Kevin Daniel is set to release his 4th album in summer 2021, and continues to tour, obtaining official selections from Mountain Jam, SXSW, Celebrate Fairfax, The ListeningRoom Festival, and more.
