A tribute to the late songwriter Chuck McDowell, featuring some of his favorite performers.

Wyatt Edmondson

Born in Montgomery, Alabama 25 years ago, Edmondson ultimately moved to Nashville to pursue his dual songwriter/performer dream, albeit in the midst of facing one particular obstacle along the way. Despite being diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa as a teenager, Edmondson decided not to let his degenerative eye condition slow him down in the least. "I remember so clearly being 15 and finding out I was losing my vision. But something in me was like, 'This is your chance to use what's been brewing and stirring up inside you to help prove that people can do anything they want to in spite of the cards they're dealt.' For me, that was music. It's really been the thing that gets me up in the morning. It keeps me going, and I'm really thankful for that. I hope it can inspire others as well."

Russell Brown, of MAGNOLIA EXPRESS

Featuring former members of Atlanta based HoneyWood Music, Magnolia Express plays high energy acoustic Americana/Roots music......Guitar, Fiddle, Banjo, Bass and Drums. Look for an album of original music soon !!!

Corey Harris is a guitarist, vocalist, songwriter and band leader who has carved out his own niche in blues. A powerful singer and accomplished guitarist, he has appeared at venues throughout the North America, Europe, Brazil, The Caribbean, West Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

He began his career as a New Orleans street singer, traveling throughout the southern U.S. In his early twenties he lived in Cameroon, West Africa for a year, which had a profound effect on his later work. He has recorded many old songs of the blues tradition while also creating an original vision of the blues by adding influences from reggae, soul, rock and West African music. His 1995 recording, Between Midnight and Day, is a tribute to the tradition of acoustic blues. Subsequent recordings, such as Greens From the Garden (1999), Mississippi to Mali (2003), and Daily Bread (2005) show Harris' maturation from interpreter to songwriter. Some of his imaginative compositions are marked by a deliberate eclecticism; other works stay true to the traditional blues formula of compelling vocals and down-home guitar. With one foot in tradition and the other in contemporary experimentation, Harris is a truly unique voice in contemporary music.
He has performed, recorded, and toured with many of the top names in music such as BB King, Taj Mahal, Buddy Guy, R.L.Burnside, Ali Farka Toure, Dave Matthews Band, Tracy Chapman, Olu Dara, Wilco, and others. His additional recordings include Fish Ain't Bitin' (1996), Vu-Du Menz (with Henry Butler, 2000), Downhome Sophisticate (2002), Zion Crossroads (2007), and blu black (2010).

In 2003 Harris was a featured artist and narrator of the Martin Scorcese film, "Feel Like Going Home," which traced the evolution of blues from West Africa to the southern U.S. In 2007, he was awarded a $500,000 MacArthur Fellowship - commonly referred to as a "genius award" - from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The annual grant, which recognizes individuals from a wide range of disciplines who show creativity, originality and commitment to continued innovative work, described Harris as an artist who "forges an adventurous path marked by deliberate eclecticism." That same year, he was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Bates College, in Lewiston, Maine.

Levi Lowrey

Levi Lowrey is a Georgia-born songwriter and former opening act for the Zac Brown Band and co-writer of the ZBB hits, "Colder Weather," "The Wind" and "Day for the Dead."

Nicholas Jamerson

"With his dreamy acoustic picking and a voice that runs molasses-thick, old-soul Nicholas Jamerson writes earnest songs that are filled with heart. His songs spin tales of southern gothic drama woven with an intricate emotional framework, underscored with delicate Americana instrumentation and country-folk melodies.

The singer-songwriter began his career as half of the duo Sundy Best. Since announcing the band's split in March 2018, Jamerson has embarked on a solo career that remains true to Sundy Best's captivating sound (2014 album Bring Up the Sun reached #11 on the Billboard Top Country Albums Chart) and showcases both his remarkable vocal and instrumental skill and his outstanding abilities as a songwriter."

Charles Wesley's sound is shaped by the time weathered hills and hollers of his home. Charles is a singer-songwriter born and raised in West Virginia. Nowadays, if you want to find him, you'd look in any dive bar, café, or live music venue in Appalachia.Charles didn't find music at an early age like many other artists. It wasn't until he was nineteen that he picked up a guitar and began singing songs.

He did however, grow up trout fishing in Upshur County streams, hunting on the Allegheny ridges, tagging along with his grandfather on the farm, and listening to old-timer's talk about their days in his grandparent's general store. Charles Wesley's father was a coal miner until his birth and his mother was a schoolteacher. Little did he know, this background would come to play a major role in the songs and stories that captivate rooms full of listeners today.

He's grateful to have shared the stage with artists such as Shooter Jennings, David Allan Coe, Luke Combs, Tyler Childers, Sundy Best, Waymore's Outlaws, Aaron Watson, Colter Wall, and many more.

Whether he's performing solo for a room full of patrons who've quieted to a barely audible murmur or a music hall full concert goers breaking in their boots to the rhythm of a Union Sound Treaty tune, Charles Wesley turns heads and opens ears everywhere he plays. His stories strike a chord in all of us and his voice gets the point across with a genuine authority.

Alash are masters of traditional Tuvan instruments as well as the ancient art of throat singing, a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. Believing that traditional music must constantly evolve, the musicians subtly infuse their songs with western elements, creating their own unique style that is fresh and new, yet true to their Tuvan musical heritage.

ALASH are masters of Tuvan throat singing (xöömei), a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. What distinguishes this gifted trio from earlier generations of Tuvan throat singers is the subtle infusion of modern influences into their traditional music. One can find complex harmonies, western instruments, and contemporary song forms in Alash's music, but its overall sound and spirit is decidedly Tuvan.

Alash first toured the U.S. under the sponsorship of the Open World Leadership program of the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Arts. Since then they have returned many times, to the delight of American audiences. The Washington Post described their music as "utterly stunning," quipping that after the performance "audience members picked their jaws up off the floor."

Alash enjoys collaborating with musicians of all stripes. Since their early partnership with the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra, they have joined forces with musicians across the spectrum-from country to classical to jazz to beatboxing. When they toured with Béla Fleck & the Flecktones, the Denver Post remarked, "As electrifying as the Flecktones' performance was, the band were nearly upstaged by Alash Ensemble." Alash appeared as guest artists on the Flecktones' holiday CD Jingle All the Way (2008), which won a Grammy. More recently, Alash joined Chicago's innovative Fifth House Ensemble in a groundbreaking concert series called Sonic Meditations.

Beyond performing, Alash has a passion for teaching and promoting understanding between cultures. Their tours often include workshops where they introduce Tuvan music to students from primary, middle and high schools, colleges, universities, and music conservatories. Children as young as 8 and 9 have learned to throat-sing. As one student exclaimed, "Alash opened my eyes to a whole new world!"

Alash has released four CDs of its own: Alash Live at the Enchanted Garden (2006), Alash (2007), Buura (2011), and Achai (2015, re-released on Smithsonian Folkways in 2017).

"The simple fact is that James McMurtry may be the truest, fiercest songwriter of his generation..."

Stephen King (Entertainment Weekly)

New Album from James McMurtry Due Out 2020!

James McMurtry has been working with legendary Los Angeles-based producer Ross Hogarth at Santa Monica's GrooveMasters for his forthcoming album. Liner notes enthusiasts know multiple-Grammy-winning producer/engineer/mixer Hogarth from his work with Gov't Mule, Roger Waters, The Black Crowes, Shawn Colvin, John Mellencamp, R.E.M.and Jewel, among many others. Hogarth's wide and varied experience and taste opened up all creative doors and usual and unusual possibilities for all their classics. And no need to explain the incredible GrooveMasters Studio.

Hogarth has never allowed himself to be pigeonholed or trapped in any one musical genre as his studio work runs the gamut from the heavy metal icons Mötley Crüe to the Grammy-winning Americana favorite Keb' Mo' to recent releases by Van Halen, Ziggy Marley and the Sick Puppies. Exclusive and particular in its clientele, the semi-private Santa Monica recording studio where McMurtry will be recording has recently opened its doors to Laurel Canyon legends such as David Crosby, Bob Dylan, Warren Zevon, David Bromberg and more. The spiritual vibe and feel of this studio, along with the cast of characters, will most definitely bring out the best in the upcoming McMurtry record.

Other notable players on the album (in addition to his stellar band) include David Grissom (John Mellencamp) and Harmoni Kelley (Kenny Chesney). McMurtry will unleash this latest collection of poignant and timely songs on New West Records this fall! "I first became aware of James McMurtry's formidable songwriting prowess while working at Bug Music Publishing in the '90s," says New West President John Allen. "He's a true talent. All of us at New West are excited at the prospect of championing the next phase of James' already successful and respected career." McMurtry joins New West's singular roster of top-tier roots music all-stars including Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, John Hiatt, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Buddy Miller, Nikki Lane and dozens more.

What began as Celtic Thunder's Neil Byrne and Ryan Kelly performing a series of shows together called 'Acoustic By Candlelight' back in 2012 has turned into what is now known as Byrne and Kelly.

Driven by dynamic vocal harmonies, the duo seamlessly combines genres like traditional Irish and Americana to create a fresh, Celtic folk sound that has garnered comparisons to iconic folk-rock duos like Simon & Garfunkel and The Everly Brothers.
